Caitlin Schippers, I suspect Derren used a few techniques. - First he forces the number of cards by simply sliding either the 15th or 16th card out slightly then feeling down to the card and plucking up the 15. - 2nd is probably using a counting force to his guessed number, and giving a sell of evens. Note the camera cuts away mid count...
4th the deck cut was telling, and kept the 9 clubs under control. How did Derren get the participant to chose the 9 clubs? Nice addition of the 9 spades pretend fluff for extra effect!
My knowledge allows me to say that even in front of an insider audience. It is difficult to imagine how Derren Bronw proceeds to execute this demonstration. All appears suggestive. To actually nail it is what's impressive, but raises plenty of questions. Yeah, every number was odd. She has to opt for Clubs. He reinforces Clubs when he purposely mistakes her choice of Spades, so she has to correct him. Also, "Lucky Charm," only having 4 cards and needing "to complete this hand" would leads to the 5 as the seemingly obvious choice. No guarantee though. Did he have pockets full of other cards as back-up? "How could you possibly know?" Probably comes into play as mental gaming also.

Also it sounds like story conversation in between tricks but there is something in the details of what he’s talking about combined with we can’t see in the room. Idk. I love watching Derren Brown. But I'm also a table games specialist. And if that is an experienced dealer, or croupier, she would have noticed immediately how bent and crimped the other club cards were. In a professional setting like that, there is no normal reason for those cards to be so bent and crimped. It is a major giveaway to his techniques. It is a lot easier to figure out how things are done when you know what to look for. In this case, it really stands out. Have to say, though, that it doesn't make Darren any less awesome!
