    NOTE: I have a preproduction unit and there will be some minor improvements in the final product!

    I do want to see a wind up draft stress test. Product specs say up to 25mph. On their Kickstarter video demo they show a guy using a blower blasting two dudes under the awning at them but not vertically facing up towards the awning. The newer style 270 Awnings are Leg free, but have the option to deploy legs to secure the Awning to the ground. I'll wait for Kammock version 2 to include that feature.
    Update: Kammock are working on a tie down option to add to Version 1.

    The awning set up is a quick and easy set up I would assume you would have to account for the the direction of the sun to use it but I think that would be best to do in any case with or without the awning. You said it’s a prototype, is it for sale for the public yet?
    I am a new subscriber to your channel and I like the roof rack that you have and I read through the instructions for install, it says it’s a non drill install just checking if that’s an issue on your end. Well thanks for posting.

    The problem with this type of awning design is when it rains.. the water puddle will build up as we cannot slope out the angle for water to flow...

  • @fpartidafpartida
    @fpartidafpartida 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Great engineering and design for this setup. The poles are a pain and ugly. If there’s so much wind that you need them, might be time to head inside the vehicle or move direction/sites. I was looking someone for sun shade and this seems perfect for that. Great point on aero, this looks like it would cut through the wind quite nicely without adding a lot of drag and making your MPG worse.

  • @johndej
    @johndej 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This looks quite interesting. I have an aluminum camper shell much like a contractor's shell on my truck. I've wanted to get an awning for it but the height is 9 feet. I've recently ordered something but I'm not sure if it's going to come or not. Do you think a traditional awning hook pole used on big RV's would work for this?

    • @OverlandEngineer
      @OverlandEngineer  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hmm...That's a good question. I think a lot of RV awnings kind of pull downward. But in your case you don't need to reach too high with the pole. Maybe ask Kammok to double check? I kind of feel like it would work or you could rig up something.

      No Issues yet, they are serviceable. The end has a removable cap you twist with a 3/8" extension if I remember correctly for manipulating the "garage spring" essentially. If the spring broke it might allow for winding the fabric manually.

    A big drawback is that it is stationary at the straight out position. Let’s be honest, the sun moves and shade is hardly ever directly underneath the awning. You have to lower the legs on either side to angle towards the sun. I love your channel but don’t turn into a salesman for your sponsors like some others have done. If you hardly used your previous awning you’ll most likely not use that one.

    • @OverlandEngineer
      @OverlandEngineer  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah that is a valid concern and I see what you mean with basically being a sell out. I took the project really liking the awning design because I never used my old one. I even mentioned in the Napa awning video that I did not really enjoy setting it up with one person. Personally, I don't sit much so I think the awning will provide plenty of shade from sunlight. That is an interesting point you make though. They could pretty easily add some sort of quick release on the angling function of the awning. This is a prototype and I think you could just adjust the angle if you needed it for certain shade.
      I also don't know too many people that heavily lower their awning and have to crawl or duck under to sit in the shade. I suppose some do but I just have not seen that too much.

    • @MUHLMEDIA

    • @OverlandEngineer
      @OverlandEngineer  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Let me answer your question with a non-answer haha. I would not necessarily put an awning purchase at the front of my list of modifications but it really makes the camping experience more enjoyable. So, do you use your vehicle more for camping or offroading? If you really enjoy the trails aspect of overlanding then spending a lot on an awning is probably not the best use of money but if you enjoy camping and forest roads then don't bother lifting your vehicle etc, use the money to make camping more enjoyable. I much prefer this design to a 270 degree awning. I like things that set up really quick otherwise I find I don't use them enough. This is why I redesigned my platform system. If I was in my shoes with that kind of money, I would maybe try to build something like this. However, vehicle camping stuff like tents and awnings require a lot of engineering to not turn out sub par and low quality DIY. To build something like this myself would probably not save me too much money would be much more worth it to just purchase it. The build quality is really impressive on this. They aren't trying to pretend that this awning is super affordable, it is not supposed to be the cheapest awning out there. The question I think is will the higher build quality and convenience be worth the money to the customer. I personally think the less barriers to get out there and use your gear to enjoy the outdoors without it being a huge burden is a positive thing and thats why roof top tents are so popular now. People have realized they like paying more for that convenience. Hopefully that kind of answers your question haha!

      For the engineering , positive features, and convience, I would buy once cry once! Sure it's almost the same price for some of the 270/180 Awning but there are times I only needed one side for shade. My only concern is the sudden up wind gus drafts. It's capable up to 25mph. At least with the traditional stake Awnings, you can secure them to the ground. Maybe Kammock will address it on the version 2 crosswing Awning.
