New sub. Great video. I only played the first one. Haven't played it for years. I can't remember if i had it, borrowed it or rented it. All my mates had gameboys in 1990 (Europe release date) and we borrowed each others games all the time, and we had a van that came round who did rentals twice a week. That was awesome.
@AuthorativeMrM yeah. He used to round on Wednesday night and Sunday, night. He rented, all sorts of stuff. And did requests too. £2 a go I think early 90s.
Awesome video. And I followed the same flow you did. fotfc was my first ever GB game, hated BftS and loved TMNT rr but didn't discover it until I was in my 30s! FotFC is still my favorite and I best it every year since its release.
I have been waiting on this review. A classic lesson in good graphics do not necessarily make a good game. Fall of the Foot Clan is definitely my favorite and the only one I own. I toyed with spending more money then I should for the third game, but you confirmed I was right to pass on that. Well done sir, another great retrospective. Cheers.
I didn't get a Game Boy until... probably 1997-ish. A Game Boy Pocket that mostly played, I believe, a borrowed copy of Tetris. I did get the Game Boy version of Tamagotchi, though. But it wasn't until Game Boy Color and the European release of Pokémon in 1999 that I really got into handheld games. Within a few years, though, I did pick up a used copy of Fall of the Foot Clan, as I was buying a lot of pre-owned games from my childhood favorite franchises that I either didn't know of pre-Internet or just couldn't afford as a child. Pretty sure it remained my one and only handheld TMNT game until I got Shredder's Revenge and Cowabunga Collection for the Switch.
My cousin had Fall of the Footclan as a kid that I played a lot. some good memories there. Finally as an adult I found it and the memories did not disappoint. I’ve still yet to play any other gameboy TMNT game, but it WILL happen
Radical Rescue was great. I remember i was disappointed at first that we didn't get a fighting game for the gb as it was around the time of tournament fighters. I remember the map could have been more helpful. Still a step up from metroid 2 for having no map. The bosses were to me the best part. They adapted to your movement as i remember. The bossrush at the end was brutal and you could only stand a chance against shredder if you could master all the bosses. Michelangelo was the most useful of the "toitels".
Yeah, I think the boss battles in Radical Rescue are probably the best of all the TMNT games. You actually had to learn their patterns and get good at them instead of just mashing the attack button and/or spamming jump kicks.
Love it, even though my opinions are polar opposites to yours. TMNT 1 feels to me like a crude prototype of a game. The scenery is bare, and there's not really any variety or difficulty to speak of. TMNT 2 is brutal and I agree that the sprites are too tall/stiff, but the levels are so diverse and offer unique challenges of increasing difficulty. TMNT 3 confused the hell out of me as a kid, and I never even beat Scratch. But finally defeating that boss rush on my original game cartridge was one of my proudest moments of last year.
I agree with everything you said about TMNT 1 vs TMNT 2, but the simpler, cleaner look (not to mention the character designs) are more appealing to me with Fall of the Foot Clan.
Played a lot of Fall of the Foot Clan. I didn't particularly love it but it was one of like three games a friend of mind had so we would swap games short term a lot. It's a great pick up and play title for sure, always at least some fun to be had. The follow ups I have only dabbled with in the recent Turtle collection but can see myself one day sitting down and powering through them, Radical Rescue being a really great concept for sure.
Yeah, Radical Rescue is definitely the best concept of the three games, I wish Konami had made more TMNT in this style so they could really get it right
Another banger as the hip kidZ like to say! Personally, and quite accurately, I prefer to say this video is totally radical and bodacious dude! This was a really great one! Cowabunga!
Great video as always Mr.M! If, only IF, Radical Rescue got a little more time in the oven, balancing the game and ironing the wrinkles, would have been the best of the GB trilogy, but, as it is, the original Fall of the Foot Clan is the best one, simple but does its job.
@@AuthorativeMrM It´s really impressive that Ultra Games could put a lot of content in a little GB game. Konami had the golden touch in that generation.

There were definitely a lot of developers who made some great-looking GameBoy games, but I love the art design that Konami had in their early days in particular. What were some of the developers/games you were thinking of?
As much as I love the original GameBoy, there are so many better systems to play the games on, even if you're just sticking to physical cartridges. It still looks great on a shelf, though!
@AuthorativeMrM yup. I have many games and original hardware that I own physically that are on my shelf too. Its nice having to collect these things over the years.

TMNT Back from the Sewers is my choice. It has a better look and the enemies pop out. The challenge is also good. The “Cowabunga!” And “Pizza Time” voices are a nice touch along with April’s “Thank you Turtles” line. Yeah you keep moving and attack left and right, just like in the first game. The first is great but it’s too easy in my opinion.
I love this series of Game Boy games! Yeah, I just recently was able to purchase the TMNT 3. The only thing with my game is that it won’t work of my super game boy. Not sure if it’s broken or fake 😮. Anyways, it works fine on my original Game Boy.
Oh heck yeah, more Gameboy content! I didn't grow up with TMNT other than the 2003 show, but never was a fan, but I do like a good bunch of the TMNT games. Good video MrMatthews!
Yeah, I think Konami's TMNT games (on all consoles) are good enough to be enjoyed even if you don't particularly love the franchise. I've never played the GBA game Konami made based on the 2003 series, so I'm not sure if they kept that quality going past the 90s
Fall of the footclan is hard to play today because Jump is backwards from every other platformer ever made, lol. I am always attacking instead of jumping. You can re-arrange controls in emulation, at least. 🍻
You're 100% correct, I hate that. I'm pretty sure the game gives you the option to reverse that in the options, though (I usually just switch them in the Super GameBoy menu, though)
I respect your respectful disagreement 🤝 I prefer Fall of the Foot Clan's soundtrack, but the Back From the Sewers music absolutely sounds more on-brand for the TMNT series (and there are more tracks, too)
Yeah, RR came very close to being near-perfect. I made my peace with the bosses (they were difficult but not unmanageable once you got their patterns down), but that awkward map system was what I struggled the most with.
Admittedly, the spirte designs of the characters in Fall Of The Foot clan are top notch, considering it's a original Gameboy game. Plus the soundtrack is legit too. Thanks for giving it the appropriate shout out! I've seen people (kids who haven't even had their balls drop) shit on this game, and it made me sad. Found 2 the best. Great music too. 3 is fun but terrible map and Very hard boss rush
Yeah, looking through the comments here, it seems like that boss rush at the end of TMNT 3 was pretty unpopular with just about everyone. Boss rushes are just never very fun.
Radical Rescue is a lot like the first NES game for me. I was too young to understand them when I first played them, and would get frustrated. Now, I'm able to figure out what I'm supposed to do in them, but still get too frustrated to want to actually slog through them.
Radical Rescue is the worst of the 3
I like that thumbnail, any chance you can email it to me.
