Sometimes I worry I glorify the 90s by only remembering the good and denying there ever was an bad, but no. The 90s were the best and I’m happy I was there for all but 10 months of it.
As a kid I remember the push for Escape from Camp Deadly to be pretty strong when it came to gaming magazines. Remember getting incredibly sick near the end of that year, actually getting picked up from school, and my mom getting me a random issue of something or other which covered that and the atrocious NES Home Alone game. Made both look like solid games but even at 6 or 7 years old could read between the lines that they didn't talk about it the same way they would first party titles. My cousin had Rad & Bad and yeah all I remember was it being difficult. Titus the Fox got a very small section in Nintendo Power, which at that time the Gameboy wasn't a very hot commodity but being the most well supported system I had kind of wanted it. Did a ton of chores for a month and begged my parents to get it only to be met with silence. In retrospect it's nice to know I wasn't missing out on much.
I actually remember Nintendo Power briefly mentioning Titus the Fox (possibly in their 'Coming Attractions' section). I don't think they said anything at all about the game other than that the graphics looked decent, but the screenshots were interesting enough that the game stayed in the back of my mind. I never saw any mention of the game after that, so for the next twenty years or so I wasn't even sure that the game had even been released. It was only after I started collecting GameBoy games as an adult that I learned that I it had actually come out, although it wasn't until recently that I bought a copy of the game. Had I actually played this game back then, I can't imagine I would have been very impressed, especially since the GameBoy had plenty of really good platformers to compare it to.
I’d already learned my lesson about trusting the quality of Simpsons video games by the time Camp Deadly released so I thankfully skipped that one, but that Skate or Die game looks pretty cool. Definitely going to add that to the ol’ “to-play” list now. I really loved this episode of TGTBTGB, maybe even more than your previous “90s” episode. Keep killing it dude!
Thanks, man! Bad N Rad is definitely worth checking out. It'll probably raise your blood pressure a bit, but once you get the hang of it, the first five levels are pretty fun.
Simpsons Camp Deadlys plot is similar to Simpsons episode "Kamp Krusty". The game was released a year before that episode so I wonder if the episode was inspired by this game.
are you crazyyyyy!!! dont talk about bad and rad you will make celestial go crazy lol great video MrM i havent played any of those titles and it was cool to know about them... except the titus fox one XD
I'll admit none of these sound very fun to me but Titus by far seems like the worst which is funny because when you first described it I was like "ok generic mascot platformer not bad...wait...what just....why?" Great video as always man!
I think the worst thing about Titus the Fox is that if you remove the worst aspects of the game (ie: progression by lucking into secret stage elements), the game would so generic and unremarkable that nothing could be said about it. Imagine making a video game specifically to advertise your own VIDEO GAME COMPANY and this is the best that you could come up with, lol
It always surprised me that developers could make the iconic Simpsons Arcade Game, but never seem to get any Simpsons console game right back then. Yet, we all bought or rented the games when they came out almost hoping to will them into being good. I never heard of Skate of Die either, thanks for the heads up on that and great breakdown of Titus, it was like color commentary during a sporting event. Good video as usual. Cheers.
No matter what anyone says about Bad 'N Rad, it remains incredibly unique! Level 6 was very tough to get through without a death. Also soul-crushingly difficult to learn all the turns on 5. Bad 'N Rad really is a game worth considering for a good challenge! As for Camp Deadly, I've always loved The Simpsons. Then again, I don't think the games were well-designed (thinking of Bart vs The Space Mutants and Bart's Nightmare in particular).
Well done Mr. M, another great episode. I was wondering what your thoughts were specifically on CAMP DEADLY and BAD n RAD. CD I feel is one of the few early gen Simpsons games thats actually playable. It's been awhile since I played BART AND THE BEANSTALK but I remembering liking CD I just don't know what happened to my copy. BnR was a game I wanted as a kid and rarely saw in the wild but I got a chance to play it and I actually like it more than SKATE OR DIE on NES just slightly. The difficulty can be cruel, but still a fun experience.
I've always had a love/hate relationship with Bad N Rad; it's frustrating and sometimes excruciatingly difficult, but it's just so damn cool! Imagine if Konami was able to smooth out the game's rough spots with a sequel, like they did with Castlevania Adventure and Belmont's Revenge. As for Escape From Camp Deadly, I actually think it's pretty decent. I wouldn't rate it higher than 7/10, but I still think it's probably the best Simpsons game from the era, at least outside of the arcade game.
@@AuthorativeMrM I'm trying to define this game, but defining it as "A Platformer" while accurate, doesn't really describe it. I'm going with Bad n Rad is more like a space shooter. You have to learn every inch of every level if you want to progress. Instead of shooting enemies the obstacle are the enemies. The precision and discipline required to beat this 7 level game is comparable to some of the NES' toughest platform games.
Camp Deadly looks interesting! Was that voices on GB? Bad & Rad looks fun. No way I'm trying to get to stage 7! Here's to another 30 years of episodes, MrM 🥂- like The Simpsons
I'll be honest, I would probably actually recommend Escape From Camp Deadly to anyone who doesn't mind playing licensed games that are less-than-perfect. It's not a particularly good game, but it's not bad at all, either. And yeah, it even uses a couple voice samples!
I never knew Skate or Die had a GB entry! I thought the two Skate and one Ski games on NES was it. Skate 2 was awesome. This one on FB does look interesting, but I don't think I could play it very long. I hate artificial difficulty that is not linked to experience and skill.
There was even a second Skate or Die game on the GameBoy, but it's more like the skateboarding event from California games and I don't think it was developed by Konami. Bad N Rad would be a perfect game if it weren't so crushingly difficult!
@@AuthorativeMrM Oh yeah, I thought that was interesting that Konami did Bad N Rad. Electronic Arts did Skate or Die 2, and I'm assuming the other NES games. I've never played any besides SOD2.
Hey, thanks for reviewing the entire Game Boy library, so I can skip playing the turds 😆That's cool that Konami made a Skate or Die game on the GB, so I'll have to check that one out. I've never played a Simpsons game that I'd play again on 8 and 16 bit consoles. The 2000's ones were decent though 👍
@@Septer_Sever lol, yes … it’s extremely telling that, as mediocre as Escape From Camp Deadly is, it’s still probably one of the best Simpsons games from the time. Bad N Rad is worth a look, if only for the soundtrack 👍
As always, great video Mr.M! Well, a bundle of mediocre games this time around, The Simpsons Games are just like the TV series has been for a long time, very low effort cash grabs. It says a lot about Skate or Die when the Game Boy version is a lot better than the NES version. And, at last, Titus being Titus, good effort but the cons are bigger than the pros. And now we wait for the next video! :D
Yeah, I've played enough of those early Simpsons games to accept that they aren't worth my time, but I still have to say that Escape From Camp Deadly is the best Simpsons game I've played from that time period (other than the arcade game)
Can't even name a semi decent Simpsons game to be honest except for one. All of them varied from bad to somewhat decent. Games I played : Bart vs the Space Mutants (crap), Virtual Bart (annoying, gimmicky rubbish), Bart's Nightmare (same as Virtual Bart), and finally, Krusty's Super Fun House, which is actually a pretty good puzzle platformer. That skateboard platform game looks ok. Titus' mascot platformer looks rubbish imo. EDIT: I forgot the Itchy & Scratchy game. Man that one sucked too.
@@RetroJackal oh man, the Itchy & Scratchy game sucks, too? I was kind of hoping that would buck the 90s Simpsons Game curse by having a different main character (I liked Krusty’s Funhouse)
Well the SNES/Mega Drive game is, at least from what I remembe. It was a mess of a game. Not played the GB version, that one appears to be something different.
I love The Simpsons but have not ever played any Simpsons game on any console but I have dabbled a little bit on our arcade stick. That's not what stuck with me about this video. I was thinking to myself. I don't think I've ever played a character on a skateboard. I have PTSD from adventure Island........
What is your favorite Simpsons video game?
Bart vs the Space Mutants gets a bad rap. That game is more authentic to the show than many people realize.
