      I mean he does have a valid point that a film or TV adaptation doesn't need to 100% follow the book or the novel. Even in iconic literature such Frankenstein or Narnia there are major differences in narrative or detail between the books and the movies yet the movies are still great. You don't have to be a slave to canon. But ROP suffers from stiff acting, bad writing and screenplay which makes the viewing experience worse.

He saw what his father strived for, and what his father achieved out of it. So he had great respect for the world. Simon, on the other hand, only lived through the good parts, with an elder grandfather that probably only worried about spoiling him, as every grandfather is fond to do. Simon didn't appreciate the world, because he only experienced the glory. And now just as his great grandfather once spoiled him, Simon spoils the world for all fans.

Simon thought they should try and make money off them somehow no matter the quality of the films. Christopher denied that this was the reason for their estrangement, though he was against adaptations and thought they could never be faithful and thought Jackson was making basic action films (J. R. R. was forced to sell the rights in the 60s due to financial trouble and there were some horrendous adaptation attempts before Jackson came along). When talking about an adaptation of a work, I think there's some truth in the idea that one can be too faithful to the original. Books and films are very different media and we consume them in very different ways so things that work in a book can be difficult if not impossible to translate into film and still be interesting and entertaining. Stuff like the level of detail and complexity of ideas - with a book you can stop to think about it for as long as you want and you can go back and re-read a section if you need a reminder or clarification, but it doesn't work in a film. Internal monologs are another thing that works well in print and is used a lot by some authors, but they're hard to translate into something that works on screen and even then it only works well in small amounts.

      I'm not sure to whom they were catering tbh. I can't speak for those who have not read the books. I don't really know how they see or feel about it. But it seems to me the series is very bad regardless of the Lore. Especially the writing, for both plot and characters' depiction.
      Take Halbrand, for example. Those of us that know the Lore, already know that "Annatar" in the books is Sauron, because it isn't a mystery for the reader. The Elves don't know that, but the readers do, because both the F.A and S.A, and the appendices in the LOTR, are written in some sort of a historical chronicle of the world of Middle-earth and its peoples. If they followed Tolkien, it would've been much more satisfying for both audiences (book readers and non), because it would've still been a surprise for the casual viewers. They would've been watching the whole thing from the POV of the Elves, so to speak, and the book readers would've been happy to see them following the Lore. But by twisting Sauron's story and trying hard to conceal his identity even from the book readers, they made a big mess out of it. That whole story didn't make any sense and it affected the Elves story, their nature, character and motivations in a very negative way, especially Galadriel.
      To make a comparison with GOT, it's like twisting Ned's death, the Red Wedding, or Joffrey's death, just so they could "surprise" the book readers too. That's not how a good story work. Say you want to adapt Iliad or Aeneid, or Shakespeare. Are you going to change the most important characters and events just because people are familiar with those stories? That's the worse approach a writer could take when making an adaptation.

She was literally an idiot that ran around swinging a sword and didn’t know where the Fortress of Angbad was (despite it being very well-known). All the elves knew Sauron had escaped and was still lurking around, they just weren’t sure what his capabilities were or who he was trying to influence. I think the worst thing the writers did was screw up the storyline so bad there is no way to work in the deceit of Anatar, the forging of the other rings, the destruction of Numenor, the building of Gondor, the fall of Eregion, etc. I still can’t believe they did this to Tolkien.

  • @Fardawg
    @Fardawg 2 ปีที่แล้ว +46

    Two things I think add to this: Christopher Tolkien basically disinherited his son Simon during the making of the Jackson films, kicking him out of the Estate, though in later years they reconciled and Simon obviously became the head of the Estate. According to Simon himself this was over Simon initially shilling for the Jackson films despite orders from Christopher that he didn't want any Estate members involved directly in the films. Christopher didn't want LOTR adapted (he thought it was impossible to adapt faithfully) and thought Jackson was turning them into basic action films (there is also the fact that his father was basically forced to sell the rights in the 60s due to financial problems and there was likely resentment in the way attempted adaptations were handled after that). Simon thought the family should try and make money off the Jackson films by attaching themselves to the films in some way and he disobeyed his father's orders. Christopher himself denied that this was the reason for the estrangement and Simon later admitted that there were other unstated reasons on top of the Jackson stuff. I believe, with not much hard evidence, that Simon allowed Amazon to make a mess of ROP for the "consultant" title he had and possibly more money.
    All that ties into the second thing: In that Shippey article he gave what I thought was very positive news at the time. He essentially said that the production was supposed to use what Tolkien wrote on the Second Age as canon material for their show, enforced through the Estate (with Simon being the head of that, remember) but were allowed to fill in the blanks to get from point to point along the timeline as long as the "facts" remained intact. He also mentioned that in the production teaser that had just come out that a name was missing. I believe he said the guy that was missing was a writer or director for the whole project and that something must have changed. I don't know if that was one of the names Gary mentioned or not. But given what we got with the actual show, what he said about having to stick to Tolkien as canon clearly changed and that missing name was likely a casualty of the change. Unbeknownst to him, Shippey would be another casualty. As I said, I think Simon changed the initial stipulation to be faithful to Tolkien and likely got something in return. Shippey messed things up for the production by repeating the initial plan which was now out, and Simon got what I believe was the sole "consultant" credit on the show.

    Truly, RoP is an historic event. A balance-shifting one.
    I have the advantage of not being a LotR fan (I do like it very much and I see all its merits, don't get me wrong), so I'm being optimistic about this: it's a good thing, a great thing even, that RoP is so objectively bad, because it makes a very clear line between those who will just eat whatever garbage is offered, and those who have self-respect and respect for the IP's and its authors.
    There's just no way to defend RoP. In a few years everyone who defended it will pretend they hated it as much as we do. And all fandoms will have gained a sense of their importance; of the authority (and the duty) they have. So, thanks RoP, thank you for being so histerically, bafflingly abysmal.
    edit: fans of LotR (true fans), I am sorry RoP happened. I can imagine how frustrating its existence is. But consider it a sacrifice required in order to save the very art of storytelling. We the casual, but still actual fans of LotR, thank you. Stand proud against the abomination.

    • @NathanCassidy721
      @NathanCassidy721 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      It wasn’t a sacrifice.
      RoP is so disconnected from what it tried to rip off that it barely did anything except, once again, humiliated morons who thought they could make this Star Wars.

    • @HerculesBallsInc
      @HerculesBallsInc 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I like your optimism, but I gotta say: this is not the first terrible adaptation of Tolkien's work... and it may not even be the worst. Seriously. There's some garbage-tier stuff out there. It's terrible, sure. But I think if the past teaches us anything, it's both that Tolkien's legacy will be almost completely unaffected by this and that fandom and Hollywood will learn almost nothing from this. Things just keep rolling on. Props to Tolkien for being so bulletproof, though! It's no wonder that everyone wants to be him.

    • @Harbinger359
      @Harbinger359 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Funnily enough, I'm not particularly put out by its existence; but that requires some elaboration. For starters it is not Tolkien or even Tolkien inspired so I just chucked it in the bin. Once Star Wars happened I knew they would eventually come for Tolkien, and seek to either corrupt or destroy it because so many of them actively hate what it stands for, and I couldn't be more proud that the people soundly rejected Rings of Prime. I do believe it marks the turning of the tide.
      What is far more irksome are the sycophants amongst the Tolkien fandom who are serving the role of Grima Wormtongue. It is one thing to enjoy something that you know is objectively bad; it is another to point out the positives or the potential in something that you dislike and is otherwise poorly made; and it is quite another to claim that you are a diehard fan of something and just mindlessly consume whatever shit has a legally sanctioned label slapped on it that says this thing is the thing you love and the actual contents be damned. And then go on to attack those who dare to point out those things you think are chocolates are, in fact, shit.
      But worst of all are those who should know better, but for whatever reason have decided to make themselves the enemy of their fellow fans because, again, they dared say 'no, we do not accept this, we have standards'.
      Long story short, there is a reason Dante assigned the lowest circle of Hell to traitors.

      I still can't get over how they missed the actual elvish style (horribly written) allegories: "A ship made from wood carries the spirit of the trees, and harness the light, wind, and support all that crawl across her roots. A stone, cut from the body of the earth, provides the foundations for all living things. Water flows over such a solid base, making cradles of life in lakes, rivers, oceans." Then lead that into Elves being light and air like boats, and Dwarves the foundations of mountains. Then you're set up for an overarching metaphor in Elrond's story arch.
