Restoring a Vintage Double Edge Safety Razor - 1960 Gillette Adjustable Fatboy F1
Restoring a Vintage Double Edge Safety Razor - The Gillette 195 Adjustable Double Edge Safety Razor, also known as the "Fatboy" was made for just over 3 years between 1958 D-3 and 1962 H-1. The models from 1958 D-3 through 1960 F-2 are of interest among shaving enthusiasts and collectors because of their high restore-ability.
In this video, we restored a 1960 F-1 version, that had heavy signs of wear, rust, deformations, etc. The razor was disassembled to its 13 pieces, thoroughly cleaned, buffed and polished with fine steel wool before nickel plating it to bring back its original shine. Deep scratches and deformations could not be restored fully, as it would require a great deal of stripping to its brass layer. It's not an impossible task but not worth doing. You may even appreciate it's aged quality.
Though nickel plating (electroplating with nickel) wasn't necessary for the restoration of this safety razor, minor rusts present needed to be covered that could creep deeper into the metal over time. Should you decide to plate your razor, make sure you do it at low amperage, around 200mAh is good and no more than 500mAh. At higher amperage, the plating will be very uneven.
Restoring anything vintage is certainly a love of labor. Taking it all apart helps you to appreciate the original work more. You'll need to decide how much of the original work needs to be untouched beyond simple clean and polish. We are trying to restore, not replace, after all.
Thanks for watching!

DIY Woodworking Shaving Shelf Project - Let's face it when you're sharing a bathroom with another person, especially a female partner, cabinet shelf space is indubitably nonexistent in most cases. And if the sink doesn't have counter space, what do you do? You'd probably just throw everything in a bag or even bolt on a solid piece of wood and call it a day. Why not take it a little further and ...

Vintage Imperial No. 2 Nickel Plated Rolls Razor
มุมมอง 1.7K6 ปีที่แล้ว
Rolls Razors were made between 1930 and 1958. This beautiful vintage safety razor is a hybrid, featuring a handle and head like a safety razor, but with provision (and an integrated art deco nickel plated case/jig/rolling device) for stoning, stropping, and resharpening the blade manually. The engineering, artistry and detail that was put into this device for shaving is amazing. "The razor that...

มุมมอง 127K6 ปีที่แล้ว
If you are just starting out into the wet shaving world, how to lather may seem obvious, but you won't get great bubble-free, creamy lather unless you give it the love it needs. With good lathering techniques, and with some practice, you'll be lathering like a pro in no time. This lathering tutorial is for a hard shaving soap puck. However, the lathering process would be similar for other soaps...
How to Melt Shaving Soap Refill Puck into a Bowl or Mug Using Stovetop and Boiling Water
มุมมอง 26K6 ปีที่แล้ว
Melting any glycerin based soap is easy. You can melt a shaving soap to fit in any bowl or mug you like with these simple steps in the video. Yes, you could melt soap in a microwave faster, but we recommend melting over stovetop and boiling water. Even though this method has more steps, your soap won't be ruined because of unforeseen consequences of leaving it in microwave for too long. Over th...

Looks set up
I thought I was using this wrong because I’ve had the same shave soap for over a year now, the stuff last forever
How about talking and explaining just exactly what you're doing rather than the irritating music and the ridiculous THAT'S GOOD.
Excellent, well done
What horrible music! I'd give you a thumbs up but that music grated on my soul! Excellent job by the way!
In these Inflationary Times. HERE IS AN EASY WAY TO DO IT MY FRIENDs Use any hard Bar Soap, Tallow or Glycerin based Soaps out there? To fit in any Mugs or Cups? Like" (Mitchells' Wool Fat or Arko Sticks. Just to name a few of them?) You can mix and match your old Soaps? Cut up the soap on a paper plate, pour your soap chunks with the shavings from the Paper Plate into a Mug, cover the soap with a small amount of water, and microwave your soap. For about a minute or so? Place a paper plate under your mug in case it bubbles out of your cup? If it foams up, STOP. The water keeps it from burning itself up. (DON'T OVER WATER YOUR SOAP??) Easy, does it? Let cool don't want to Crack the Mugs or Cups you're using? (You just want it to Congeal in your Mug or Cup') it is very hot and watery'''''. let it cool in PLACE'. after it cools, put it in a Sunny Window, until the Soap hardens? When using your soaps, use Dry Brush Less Water. It thickens the soap, making it easier to use on your face. Save your Money, spend it on your wife, don't listen to the shave Mafia. It saves me time and Money. Wheelchair Larry Happy New Year. Your Mileage may vary?
Qual o nome do produto líquido que você usa para limpar ?
That’s a massive shave bowl. Mind dropping a link for that also?
so much effort, you guys do this every morning?
Para usarse o solo coleccion?
good tip about covering soap with hot water let in soften enough!
Thanks! This is very thoroughly and clearly demonstrated -- most helpful!
Really, with the music?
Do people actually have ten minutes to mix up their soap every morning? 😮
Pretty good. Pretty, pretty, pretty... pretty good.
The only time I have ever soaked or bloomed a puck is when it’s a hard puck like Tabac or Mitchels Wool Fat and only the first time and I have never used a separate bowl to develop a lather my whiskers did that. Converted well over 20 years ago.
I would prefer a longer brush handle to avoid all the soap 🧼 that gets on the handle and the hands.
So you platted each part separately?
What was that!? How much water, amount of soap/cream, and lathering. No comment but nice music!? Not very helpful.
That's a sure way to cause a 'bald spot' on the brush if you keep doing that with pressure.
+1 for the restoration video - excellent work. -11 for the bloody irritating music.
wonderful restoration - but how did you fix the correct blade gap while assembling? This Part was too fast...
Send it to Back Roads Gold, he will clean, polish, and adjust it for $30. For an additional $30 he will even replete it.
I have an old Kriss Kross double edge blade honing machine that needs restored. Would you be interested in trying it ?
You added more than 100$ to the value of this wonderful vintage razor and keep it up!
How can i melt the soap in smaller container then the size of soap?
Do you have to prepare your beard before shaving with this method?
great job. I have a question: what are the dimensions of the lower spring? I lost the one of my fatboy 1961
Could have done without the music, didn't bother watching with that noise
Just started on wet shaving, and I bought a shaving set (razor, mug, brush, and stand) that came with a puck of soap. No matter how I search, I can't find anything on what to do with my soap puck. Do I leave it in the mug? Do I find something else to store it in? Do I buy a separate bowl to make lather? Would be nice to find a tutorial on the basics instead of 5 million "How to make lather" videos.
This is exactly what I am looking for too. All the wide bowls for pucks don't come with lids and all the ones with lids are really tiny. I am frustrated. Did you ever come up with a solution on what to do with your soapy mug with the puck in it between shaves?
Oh wow. I haven't been loading my brush nearly enough. No wonder my lather has been crap.
Love how you showed that you can do this with the simplest of tools, but two forstner bits would would have saved you a bunch of file work on those holes. If you hadn't brought in the bandsaw to speed things up, I'd say you did this with less than $30 worth of tools (typed that before the drill came out) and a couple dollars in wood. :)
Thank you very much. Happy new year.
Can you please tell me where the soundtrack you are playing is from? Whom is the artist? I used to have all her music and now I forgot her name. Thanks for any help.
Who have time for this before going to work the morning
Nice and simple. Well done.
All to sell razor blades.
Imagine they made this razor for a $1.95
They sold them for that but it cost more than that to make them. They sold them cheap to make money off of selling the blades in the long run.
What a load of rubbish
Friend please help me Si niquel? I need puto new niquel in one grillete, You can help me todo this (the time and power of electolite)
I would like to replace my vintage razors in rhodium and gold. I’m thinking of buying a replating kit. What would you recommend for the average user? Edit: I just bought what I think (not %100 sure) is a notched t-bar 1947-50 Superspeed in great condition that I would like to replate in rhodium for my collection. Also, turn one of my Gillette Slim adjustable’s to either rhodium or gold. I have a few more on the way as well. I’m just trying to learn technique so I can do it right the first time. I got a place where I think has a starter kit but it’s expensive and I’ve seen cheaper kits than $5k wondering if that would affect the quality of the plating?
Thank God someone is showing how to do this. Am just now at the age of 57 starting to use safety razors and don't know my head from my back side on any of this. Thanks!!
That old grandpa fatboy will last for another 100 years
Very good.
Didn't work for me. I followed the same steps and had it boil for over an hour and a half. It became more pliable but not melted.
It is very sad Gillette don't open up their archives and make more of these razors hey.. there is obviously a strong market for them hey!!
OMG, just push the button on a Barbasol can lol Just kidding of course
Great video, simple, straight to the point, Thanks
Thank you, I wish I had found this video earlier. I tried this way and it worked perfectly! Take care
This is a realy complicated procedure requires hardwork and patience, I have got one Gillette Black Beauty adjustable razor in working condition, and can't even think of doing so moreover in INDIA I don't think anyone would be doing it 🙏🙏🙏
People in the US do it for $60.
I am impressed!!! Where is your business located? What is the average cost for a restoration?
