our 4240 has 10 000 h on it. it jumped out of gear on a,b,c,d lever and the 2 speed was a little iffy. when we purchased tractor a few years ago. dad fixed the linkages 2 speed and a,b,c,d shifts good and no longer jumps out of gear. But now Sometimes it can pop out of third gear if you engine brake when going down hill. Sometimes it feels a little funny when shifting from N to 2nd to 3rd. It shifts best if you go from 1st straight to 3rd. I worked on these tractor engines but never the back end. Sounds like synchronizers are worn. Can you change synchronizers without completely disassembling top shaft. Do you need to split tractor or can you just remove cab and cover.

Check the detents before you get too nervous they're on the right side of the transmission case where you see your shift linkage coming in. You can shim them up to be a little more positive engaging.
If you have to go into the rear end we pull the cab and then roll the rear end away pull the three-point housing off and the transmission cover and there's your top shaft comma yep you have to disassemble it to do anything on the top shaft.
I have heard of guys complaining about the tractors jumping out of gear and they put new cab mounts in and claimed it helped

I know you are busy but when you get a chance check out a channel called Young red Angus. Do alot with regenerative ag treating seed with compost and different field trials. Thinks outside the box

Saw a couple of his videos.
I have my own experiments to question common practice of fertilizer. Should be good.

Would you go straight to john deere to get those manuals or is there a better place to go?

I'm not going to go into the whole hydraulic issues with my 4230 here in the comments but I may need expert advice someday. I have the books for it now so I need to go through and understand what does what and go from there.

Thankfully John deere exists. You would be out of business if you had fix New Hollands. They don't break....😂😂

Put some camera glasses on with the yellow shooting lenses in so ya can still see and just talk to yourself while ya do the combine inspections, I bet a lot of cheap bastards like me will watch so we can do it ourselves 🤣🤣

I was wondering if you knew why Deere never put the powershift in their 4 wheel drive. Always enjoy when you are in the shop

If they would have think how awsome that would have been!

They put the powershift in their skidders, which is really nice, but I never realized they didn't put them in the 4wd tractors. Kind of weird by my thinking.

I wonder if we don't look at the competition when the 30 series articulated came out. You had a 16 speed partial power shift in the John Deere and any competitor at the time was using a 12-speed crash box from a semi. A lot of them had a very slow Road speed and a lot of them PTO and 3-point were kind of an afterthought. An 8630 in its day was pretty state-of-the-art

I kind of remember Deere had a 2 year waiting period to get a 30 series that was an incredible tractor at the time we went and looked at one the dealer had got in there was a large crowd there
