#sound agriculture #betterwaytofarm Trying to emphasize how big a small gain on this field this year really is. Like I said, take it with a grain of salt, but we really moved the needle on the soil test in the root zone and added an impressive yield bump. Let's do it again at a little higher level of management. Bring in more plant testing and different levels of applied fertilizer trials.

    There is a HUGE sleight of hand on your grazing costs: you are assuming 100% ownership on the dry lot side and using land rent on the grazing side. Folks have to ask themselves if they want to be a land owner or a tenant farmer. Buying grazing land won't pencil, at all right now. Building a dry lot beside owned crop ground definitely will. Grazing 3 acres of owned land at 5k/acre and 7% interest, and your grazing feed costs are over $1,000/yr. And that's only the interest -- does not include fencing, property taxes, etc. Leasing grazing land isn't a long term solution for most cattlemen. For instance: repair a fence, put in a water well, etc; and then the landlord's nephew wants to be a cowboy and the farm gets yanked out from under you. Work years to get a herd where you want it and lose it all on the whim of someone in town. Dry lot also gives you many options for utilizing poor quality grain and hay that otherwise wouldn't be marketable. Gives you the option of harvesting wet crops, minimizing harvest losses and risks. You totally ignore the value of manure from a dry lot, which NDSU reports is $65 for one cow for half a year. Finally, there is a LOT less labor in a dry lot and less machinery costs in a dry lot for this reason: large number of cows in one location on a dry lot vs cattle scattered hither and yon all over the county. In the dry lot, you are running a tractor and feed wagon for maybe 1/2 hour per day to feed 300 cows. In grazing, you are driving a pickup for four hours per day to check water, fences, etc. Enjoy your videos, BTW.

    • @jonstevensmaplegrovefarms3754
      @jonstevensmaplegrovefarms3754 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Great conversation. Everyone's numbers are a little different. The cost of the land would be the same whether you're grazing it row cropping it or using it as a hay field. And that would go for a lot of your fixed costs. All my numbers are out of the book that universities put together. The manure out of the cow is the same whether they're in the feedlot or out grazing. The only difference is that in the feedlot, you lose nutrient value, and then you have the cost to haul it and spread it It takes the same amount of feed per year to feed that pair, whether there in confinement or grazing part of the year. For part of the year to feed them cows, we don't start a tractor daily, that many bales not made, bedding and hauling manure... The value to the soil is also huge in a grazing rotating with a row crop system vs a normal run a hay field dead plow it for row crops. Look at how much fertilizer you have to haul on that hay field Period You could be hauling manure back but you still have that cost involved. And then a typical old Hayfield doesn't have much value to the soil. In a rotational grazing system where your row crop is part of the rotation you have a green manure

    • @NorthForkHayandLivestock
      @NorthForkHayandLivestock 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@jonstevensmaplegrovefarms3754 Do the math again with both row cropland and pasture purchased and the numbers are totally different. Again, your scenario is you own the dry lot and you rent the grazing. Grazing land is too expensive to purchase, by far. All the subsidies for cropland and availability of winter corn stalks has driven up pasture prices and rent. As far as the manure value, if you own cropland, the manure is on your own farm, whereas leased grazing the manure is on someone else's farm. Not the same value. It unequivocally does not take the same feed whether cattle are on pasture or confinement. Confinement cattle take far less feed, as University of Nebraska research shows: th-cam.com/video/YIME6gwQe4g/w-d-xo.html. Per Dr. Karla Jenkins, who feeds her own cattle on dry lots. The cheapest way to raise cattle on planet earth is grazing on the Pampas -- no winter feeding, reliable rainfall, low labor costs. In the US, Gulf Coast pasture would be hard to beat, but there are hurricanes to contend with. In the North Plains, Nebraska Sandhills is probably the best thing going. If you don't have 30M laying around to buy a sandhill ranch or happen to have inherited one, need to be creative if you want to be in livestock. None of them are for lease at those rates, as far as I know. Dry lots also allow you to preserve whatever pasture resources you may have during a drought. I drive around and see pastures grazed into the ground because cattlemen haven't invested in dry lots -- because they don't own, but lease. On a chalkboard, manure on grazing land is this wonderful, wholistic thing......In reality when the ground is leased, it often gets RAPED for short term gain.

    • @jonstevensmaplegrovefarms3754
      @jonstevensmaplegrovefarms3754 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @MrJimsonweed67 My math for my farm shows grazing is by far more profitable than bringing the cows home for the summer. 6 months of the year we are "confinement" because of my region I love feeding cows and hauling manure, if there was money in it I would do that.

    • @jonstevensmaplegrovefarms3754
      @jonstevensmaplegrovefarms3754 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @MrJimsonweed67 I would imagine numbers to be very regional. 300 bushel of corn is going to cash flow a lot different than somebody with a 100 bushel corn for them cows to rent that pasture. Somebody with limited Acres or more cows than their Acres can support cash flow different Like I said all my numbers are directly out of the farm business management book for my region

      @jonstevensmaplegrovefarms3754 Now THAT is hilarious. Jon, I've followed your Mad Cow stuff for years. I had a 2003 800 XCR. Something similar happened once. When we were registering at a 1000ft drag race on a lake in Michigan, I left my XCR and walked around seeing who was in my class. I overheard a guy on a ZRT 800 (My class, obviously, and I saw he was the only other 800 there-small town) saying "I'm running 800 stock......but I've got some clutching and gearing done.......also running chisels. Not supposed to do that in stock, but what the Hell?! He saw me, and asked what class I was in. When I said same one as you, guys face got red in his "Oh shit" moment. He woulda really had a bad day if he'd known that, A: I was running mechanical reverse! B: I had installed electric start! It can be done by mounting a gel battery, elevated near the chaincase. But I had one advantage-I had the 4 suspension mounting holes location altered, moved down about an inch, raising the sled for better weight transfer. Dealer had done this for other guys, with great results. Of course I didn't blabber about it like he did. It was best of 3 runs wins. I won first and last of the 3. I actually was beating him on the second run, but my sled torque steered badly on all 3 runs, and on that run I would've eventually crossed into his lane. I needed a torque strap. Oh well......😅😅😅😅

      @AJ3488 I want to do a test plot with them to see if they have other hybrids. I used a pre-emergent product, and then the goal was at 10 days after the pre-emergent to do a second pass. But then we got into that rainy season, so by the time I was able to do a second pass, we were at 30 almost 40 days. At that point there was a lot of big thistle. So, I ran a mix of Cobra Bassagran Warrant . Then, I cultivated the field three times to try to help clean it up. It works very well. If I was going to do non-GMO beans again, I would definitely have winter Rye ahead of it. Do a pre-emergent program. And then I would rather cultivate and learn how to do in season covers versus several passes of chemicals The row crop cultivating along with a residual herbicide worked really well

      If it is a Synchro range transmission It could be the transmission input shaft seal If it's a late model the PTO operating Pistons can leak oil into the clutch housing If it is a power shift it's also an input shaft seal

    Nice pup! Are you happy with how the timeless fence post went in?

    • @jonstevensmaplegrovefarms3754
      @jonstevensmaplegrovefarms3754 หลายเดือนก่อน

      No. 4 of them have now broke. And to replace them you now clip the wire to the Post because your not going to cut your lines to thread in a new post. Ground has to be soft to put them in without drilling a hole. The one end of the pasture we have to move that wire next spring. Them posts will be returned. Have had much better luck with the Gallagher t post insulators and metal t post.

    Yes, your videos are helpful. do you recommend riveting brake lining on or going with the newer bonded pads?

    Hoping you still check these for comments. Would bad brakes also cause the trans filter to need replacing often?

    • @jonstevensmaplegrovefarms3754
      @jonstevensmaplegrovefarms3754 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes. The brake material usually plugs the suction screen. But many times I have seen where the pad is gone and then you have steel on steel. All that dust gets into the oil and will plug the filter. When I do a brake job I have an air nozzle that can blast parts cleaner, I try to rinse the transmission case the best I can

    In the early 90's we put a 600 bu. box on a 73 L900 477 w/5&4 twin stick. got professional at shifting...would reach thru steering wheel and shift both sticks at once and split shift. sometimes double clutch, sometimes no clutch, became 2nd nature. Pulled the 1480 combine out several times one wet year. Hoist was the 3 stage telescoping cylinders. Hired hand raised box to high when too full at the 15th or so season of use....cylinders popped out , truck did a wheelie, sold it running well on auction needing a hoist!

    I’m currently in our quad range of our 4230 the metal seal on the apply piston was broken everything else seems great. Is there anything else you would recommend checking out while it’s split?

    • @jonstevensmaplegrovefarms3754

      You mean the piston for the clutch? I put bearings and races on it and the pto. If doing clutch work might as well do rear engine seal.

    • @083_mac
      @083_mac หลายเดือนก่อน

      @ tractor has 3k hours our neighbor bought it new and we bought it from him in the 90s it’s mainly just an auger and brush hog tractor. It lost odd gears. So I removed the planetary and little clutch packs. The apply piston for the smaller clutches had a bad seal and bad frictions and steels. Would you worry about getting into the clutch or resetting it? I plan to rebearing the clutch and pto controller and update the lube dump valve and stuff. Just wondering if I should be on the look out for any other common issues.

      @083_mac so you pulled the two-speed out With that few of hours theoretically you shouldn't have to worry about the Perma clutch but since you're there nothing wrong with pulling it apart and inspecting it and then just have your dealer reset it
