    And this is the simple reason that I quit playing guitar in worship bands and started playing the piano so I could perform old hymns that satisfy my soul.

      @@SundaySchoolClubNo, when the Almighty wants to be praised, he has Johann Sebastian Bach as his composer. An organ beats even my mother’s grand piano (fortunately, we bought a Hammond Organ for the living room, more reasonable than another member of her wedding party who built a Mighty Wurlitzer (tm) into his house).

    I've always liked the old hymns better. Modern songs focus too much on our feelings or our reactions to what Christ has done, rather than what Christ has actually done.

      Philip Murdoch I think there is room for the ‘This is how I feel about it’, but it needs to be in the context of ‘this is who God is and what Christ has done, is doing, will do’. The modern song form of Verse-Chorus is better than the old hymn form for this, but it has to be used to express this truth-response dynamic.

      The songs about going to the lord in time of trouble are too popular
      It’s excessive
      It has become self serving
      In the end I don’t feel empowered I feel more sad or I focus more on myself
      Hearing one of those songs might help me but it must be followed by many songs about God’s greatness and if it’s theologically sound it turns my mind away from the pain a bit and turns on my analytical mind to understand the meaning of the words
      I mean... what is a bulwark?

      I love old hymns. But I can't say I like them "better." Head-based theology is not "better than" heartfelt response. The Bible says we're to love God with all of our hearts *and* souls *and* minds *and* strength. Not that we're supposed to pick one to prioritize over all the others. In my experience, hymns can be too one-dimensional. They capture the just-saved, everything-is-wonderful, mountaintop experience, but they have less to offer in the moments when we're like Elijah, feeling overwhelmed and completely alone and desperate, and making a conscious declaration that we're choosing to follow and to praise anyway.
      The Psalms recognize a breadth of human situations. They include emotion. They even include (*gasp*!) repetition.
      And, IMO, rightly-understood and rightly-used, some of those "self-centered" songs aren't really all that self-centered.

    "Amazing grace; How sweet the sound
    That saved a wretch like me!
    I once was lost but now am found;
    Was blind, but now I see.
    Twas grace that taught my heart to fear
    And grace my fears relieved;
    How precious did that grace appear
    The hour I first believed!
    The Lord has promised good to me;
    His word my hope secures;
    He will my shield and portion be
    As long as life endures."
    "O Lord my God! When I in awesome wonder
    Consider all the works Thy hands have made,
    I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder:
    Thy power throughout the universe displayed.
    And when I think that God, His Son not sparing
    Sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in:
    That on the cross, my burden gladly bearing,
    He bled and died to take away my sin.
    When Christ shall come with shout of acclamation
    And take me home, what joy shall fill my heart!
    Then I shall bow in humble adoration
    And there proclaim, 'My God, how great Thou art!'
    Then sings my soul, my Savior, God, to Thee,
    How great Thou art! How great thou art!"
    "Great is Thy faithfulness, O God my Father;
    There is no shadow of turning with Thee.
    Thou changest not, Thy compassions, they fail not;
    As Thou hast been, Thou forever wilt be.
    Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth,
    Thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide,
    Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow:
    Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside!
    Great is Thy faithfulness, great is Thy faithfulness,
    Morning by morning new mercies I see!
    All I have needed, Thy hand hath provided,
    Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me!"

      @cmowers9 --- Hello. I would say / add that the "Praise" music from Maranatha Music singers and players of Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa/Santa Ana, in southern California late 1970's to late 1980's was actually good stuff. The words were often taken from sections of the Psalms or a verse of scripture someplace in the Holy Bible and did mention The Lord Jesus / Jesus Christ / God The Father / The Holy Spirit. Album "Praise Five" was very good.
      The video shows / mentions the absolute trash and gunk mentioned in this very good video about other groups that are NOT "Praising God" but are often doing what is termed: 7-11 tunes. 7 words sang 11 times over. NO depth, or meaning and NO mentioning of The Father, Son or Holy Ghost, or the cross or blood or sin or judgement or hell. Gunk from "Hillsong" and other gunk machines made up of wannabe singers and crummy guitar players that could not get a gig in a beer bar in a mining town. 1990's stuff to now is audio and spiritual garbage.

    This is what A.W. Tozer hated about contemporary lyrics. Full of "I's", they are more about what we say we do or will do for God, as opposed to what He has done for us. Very self focused actually.

      O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you;
      my soul thirsts for you;
      my flesh faints for you,
      as in a dry and weary land where there is no water.
      2 So I have looked upon you in the sanctuary,
      beholding your power and glory.
      3 Because your steadfast love is better than life,
      my lips will praise you.
      4 So I will bless you as long as I live;
      in your name I will lift up my hands.
      5 My soul will be satisfied as with fat and rich food,
      and my mouth will praise you with joyful lips,
      6 when I remember you upon my bed,
      and meditate on you in the watches of the night;
      7 for you have been my help,
      and in the shadow of your wings I will sing for joy.
      8 My soul clings to you;
      your right hand upholds me.
      Alot of 1st person, singular pronouns in that sacred song, and it was inspired by God himself and in the first congregational hymnbook of God's people.

      If it is scripture, it is the Word of God singing. If it is simply man (different than Spirit inspired scripture), it is man singing. Generally speaking, contemporary evangelical lyrics are intended to evoke emotion, similar to when people at a Bett Midler concert raise their hands and hold cell phones with lights on as she sings "The Rose", or "From a Distance". Lutherans have a God to us theology; evangelicals have an Us to God ideology. I've done both and there is a difference.

    Almost all of our local churches play this stuff. They play it too long, too loud and in the dark so that the focus is on the performers on the stage (two words that should never be used in describing a worship team). I sometimes don't know if I'm in church or a rock concert.
    I wonder how many praise team members would drop out if told they were going to be placed in a separate room and only the music would be coming through the sound system at an acceptable level?

    I used to play this stuff in church, but i see clearer now about what good theology in music is, and have gone back to the original hymns which actually have good theology. In my escape from jesus culture, and N.A.R music, I summarized from the type of music I used to sing with this little ditty..., ( I'm gonna do this and Im gonna do that.., Im gonna do this and I'm gonna do that sometime soon, I'm gonna lift my hands to praise the lord, i'm gonna read his holy word I'm gonna do this and gonna do that sometime soon. ("this and that" is symbolic to the theological emptiness I used to sing about, Singing like I was reading the instruction manual to my VCR, but never actually using it or pressing any of the buttons. that is how i felt singing these songs, A few songs were heretical, but a good majority where mostly empty praise to me, which begs this question be asked, What is the Gospel? Simply put, it is Jesus Christ himself, his birth, life, death, resurrection, ascension, and etc. I believe these are the things that we should be singing about. "To God be the Glory Great things he has done so loved he the world that he gave us his son."

    Good stuff there, Pastor Fiene! I went through a phase where basically, I only listened to "Christian" music and "clean" secular music. But then, I saw that so many "Christian" bands were either frauds, quitting the faith, or embracing bad doctrines which basically came down to "Jesus is my BFF." This video perfectly shows examples of embracing bad doctrines, or being too vanilla to actually say anything substantial.
    Plus, the vast majority of Christian music just isn't on par with its secular counterparts, usually sounding like a bad or not-near-as-good mimicry of a more popular secular artist or trend.

    Uh-oh. Tipped some sacred cows with this one.... Tradition can take effort to embrace; richness is worth it.
    As I understand it, the oldest known hymn of the Church is "O Gladsome Light", sung at every Orthodox Vespers (early evening service). I think it's from ~ the 400s A.D. (not a typo). Still not my favorite, and hard to learn and sing, even for a musician, but it's growing on me. I have always loved that it stretches back to the earliest generations of Christians openly gathering in large groups for worship.🕯☦

      Yes, I like thar one!
      Old hymns also were once rejected!
      P&W often uses Bible verses for lyrics....shouldn't we all be glad about that?
      I love the music I grew up with. When I had kids, I loved the music they grew up with, and now I've learned new music to love from my grandkids.
      Closing ourselves to new music means we miss out!
      Not only do we miss out on enjoying music, we also miss out on the connections to God and to each other that music provides. Hating certain musical styles is kinda antisocial. It's saying "I refuse to sing with you unless you sing what I want"
      And the Bible does talk about making things new and singing new songs, and God's mercies being new everyday.

    You call me out upon the waters (Matthew 14:28-29)

    And there I find You in the mystery (Colossians 2:2-3)
    In oceans deep my faith will stand (Matthew 14:30-31)

    I will call upon Your Name (Psalm 116:2, 4, 13, 17, Lamentations 3:55-57, Joel 2:32, Matthew 14:30, Romans 10:13)
    And keep my eyes above the waves (Matthew 14:30)
    When oceans rise (Genesis 7, Psalm 46:1-3)
    My soul will rest in Your embrace (Jeremiah 6:16, Matthew 11:29, Luke 15:18-24)

    While I love some contemporary worship music, I agree about the "vague, sappy and repetitious" music. I feel the quality of the music too often grossly outpaces the quality of the lyrics. However, I feel that way about some hymns. And, whereas I don't suggest dumping all the old hymns because some of them are lame/boring/lyrically-junk, I don't suggest putting a nose in the air over modern worship music.
    Those hymns were written in a time and place, by a group of people that we're speaking to their time and generation. Same with modern worship music. As long as the message is good, I'm okay with a variety of styles. (Except rap. I won't say there's no place for it in the faith, but, I will say there's not enough room in most churches for both me and it...I can't get far enough away!)
    Lyricists like Michael W Smith, Chris Tomlin, Rich Mullins, Phil Wickham, Matt Maher (sp?), Matt Redman. They all do quality music, and if one of them does crank out something vague, sappy or repetitive, I'm willing to turn the other cheek. And, many a solid church has benefited from these songs. Mine has a regular diet of contemporary worship, with occassional old hymns, and that's a mix I like.
    After all, there's a word for churches that stick to just the old hymns....
    Empty....
    (okay, that's probably not 100% true....but, if I can't be snarky on this channel, there's just no justice)
    :-)

    I find that critiques of contemporary worship often miss out the fact that these songs are contextualized in the service and sung with genuine joy and thanksgiving.
    They are actually quite beautiful, and you can memorize them in ways that are perhaps harder with more traditional hymns. For example, the song 'The Stand':
    "So I'll stand with arms high and heart abandoned
    In awe of the one who gave it all
    I'll stand, my soul, Lord, to you surrendered
    All I am is Yours."

    I'll concede that this is funny and I agree that some so-called 'worship' songs (old and new!) fall far short of expressing biblical truth, but regarding songs that don't mention the Lord, God or Jesus Christ, the Christians who sing these songs know WHO they're singing to.

    • @RachelRamey
      @RachelRamey 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Right? Can you imagine if we spoke to our family members the way some people seem to think we need to address the Lord in worship? It would sound a lot like those repetitive prayers the same people also tend to mock. (You know, "Dear Lord, we just pray to You. We thank you, Lord, for this day. We thank you, Lord..."
      My husband would probably be wanting to gag me if I were going around saying, "Michael, what would you like for dinner? Would you prefer mac & cheese, Michael, or, Michael, would you rather have pot roast? Because, Michael, the macaroni will take an hour, but the pot roast will take three hours, but, Michael, I know you like the pot roast better..."

I love some old hymns, but not all. They are not all theologically perfect either. Many worship songs today are based on scripture. And if you complain about repetitiveness, then what about the angels around the throne repeating "Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty," over and over and over.....

    he, he, cute, but.... by that logic I guess we should remove most of the Psalms from the Scriptures, forget about even considering the Song of Songs as a possible symbolism for God's relationship with His people and that whole repetitive "Holy, holy, holy" thing the angels do before the throne, that's right out.
    What it comes down to is the whole - mind vs. heart, intellect vs. emotion, rationalism vs. romanticism argument. I get equally annoyed with the people who preach that we should only have new songs and stay away from hymns. It's not either/or; the Christian faith needs songs that express poetically what touches the heart AND songs that reach the head with good doctrine. In fact... I think there is a verse somewhere that says, oh, I don't know, something about "Love God' and goes on to say "with all your heart" and then something about "and with all your mind". *Shrug*

"He Will Hold Me Fast" is one such example. This video makes a good point -- and (full disclosure) I find hymns very meaningful -- but I fear it seizes on the worst of contemporary music to make its point without acknowledging that God is still using present-day composers to create that which is good and true and beautiful.

      It takes a lot of effort for Lutherans to be able to sing, for instance, the Troparion for St Herman of Alaska (written no earlier than 1970), and it has little to do with its "newness". One must jump straight from snatching up what few crumbs of gospel remain in Lutheranism, to an environment where the gospel of Christ is truly taken for granted - it is believed in Orthodoxy, it is everywhere and in everything the Orthodox do, IT IS NON-NEGOTIABLE, and thus our hymns can safely dwell on how the Holy Spirit guided historically documentable people (this one died in 1837) to further His real, well-physically-represented-on-Earth Church. For me it was a chasm that took 20 years for me to cross. I pray that it proves less difficult for others!
      O blessed Father Herman of Alaska,
      North star of Christ's holy Church,
      The light of your holy life and great deeds
      Guides those who follow the Orthodox way.
      Together we lift high the Holy Cross

    Let holy charity mine outward vesture be,
    And lowliness become mine inner clothing.
    True lowliness of heart, which takes the humbler part,
    And o'er its own shortcomings weeps with loathing.
