  • In the South, never judge a town name by the way it's spelled. These town names in North Carolina are no exception.

    North Carolina is three different states in one... Mountains, Piedmont, and Coastal... Three different cultures, cooking styles, and dialects... We are as unique and unpredictable as the weather patterns in our state.

    Some of those names are Cherokee. Some come from the melting pot. Some from the names of famous people. North Carolina is a gorgeous state.

    • @ashleighelizabeth5916
      @ashleighelizabeth5916 3 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      Not just Cherokee but other Native American names as well. North Carolina is just shot through with Native American names. Places like Lumberton, Chocowinity, Mattamuskeet, Manteo and Pantego just litter the eastern part of the state and of course the western counties have tons of them too.
      Famous people abound as well of course and in some cases famous places as well. Look at New Bern (Bern, Switzerland), and Bath (the oldest town in the state named after Bath, England).

My grandma once told me a funny story about a man she knew who was from out of state. He pronounced it "Fuckway Vagina." And yes, he was dead serious. Needless to say, that's become something of a running joke in my family!

Both had a spring. And the real reason it was two separate towns was due to segregation. Unfortunately fv was one of the last of not dead last to desegregate. It wasn’t till then that it became one hyphenated town. And that shit was in the sixties or sevenths.

      It's an Algonquin word that means, "sinking down sand." Some of the most unusual or difficult words to pronounce in North Carolina are often Native American in origin.

      I actually read something about how it was named Topsail after the top-sail on a boat by the locals and they all had heavy accents and were lower class and as such they pronounced it Top-Sull and so it became a thing over the years!
