To the people who made this work of art possible i just say thank You. I cant describe with words what i feel when i listen to this piece but i can assure that this beautiful work makes me believe there is still greatness in the human being.
Nearly all the performance clips on youtube are lacking in the dramatic element to make these songs effecive. They are spirituals and as such need some serious rhythm and movement. I performed this with Cleveland/Maazel and believe me, the spirituals rocked when appropriate and all these tempos are too slow. Tippett was in attendance, a command performance for Prince Charles, and he heartily approve our performance.
David Whipple however, this version (arranged by Tippet is extremely moving, and majestic - I have never heard such a powerful performance as this - most wonderful
Not as good as I think it could be, however it is definitely the best rendition I have heard so far. It annoys me that such a great work has such little representation.
“Ellen and Nimdok were returned to us later that night, which abruptly became a day, as the heavenly legion bore them to us with a celestial chorus singing, ‘Go Down Moses.’ The archangels circled several times and then dropped the hideously mangled bodies. We kept walking, and a while later Ellen and Nimdok fell in behind us. They were no worse for wear.” Haha, I had to know what that sounded like!

I don't think we should expect the true soul of it to be shown tbh - for a start, almost all of the singers are not black/African-American/p.o.c. and this setting was written by a white British composer. If anything though that makes this all the more interesting and intruiging to listen to - there are so many more layers to it. The power and majesty of this rendition, for me, is utterly thrilling!
Why.so.slow????? You have removed every shred of emotion in this normally powerful piece by taking it at a funeral dirge pace. Coming from a philharmonic, I expected a big, rich, but stuffy rendition. I got all of the stuffy and a little of the rich. I got NONE of the power of the song, because you removed it from its natural setting of desperation, pleading, expectation, self-righteousness and triumph.
Tippett's advice written in the score: "The spirituals should not be thought of as congregational hymns, but as integral part of the Oratorio; nor should they be sentimentalised but sung with a strong underlying pulse and slightly "swung". The consonants should not be over-distinct (an' rather than and, etc.)." In later records of his own work, Tippett made sure those spirituals did not display any sign of swing, for the topic, probably, being to serious.
Can I just say, slow tempi don't as a rule remove anything from the piece, except maybe excitement. And that excitement can be replaced with other stuff - will be replaced by other stuff if the performer (as they are here) is any good.

Szuper!!!

I think the main problem is the sound balance between the singing and the instruments - the orchestra is far too loud imo
Needs a bit more rehearsal.
Great sung

The Chinese premiere of the five spirituals was just done yesterday

The true soul of this gospel is unfortunately not shown here. Sir Simon Rattle is a genius - but this Nigro Music is interpreted too white.

" interpreted too white "
bs
I'm surprised Sir John had to use a score. It is a well known spiritual and his performance lacks conviction.
It was all for effect, you philistine

Brad Doty removed the emotion?? are you sure??
Rattle is following the composer's suggested tempo, which seems sensible to me...

Yeah, let's enjoy every shred of emotion by blazing through it(!!)
I don't like it I can't here the back so and loads of other reasons
I'm sorry but how is it appropriate for an all-white choir to sing a song like this?
Yes
it is .
