I'm a Speed Coach, I coach some baseball athletes and this is my preferred mode of teaching. As you stated Coach, the Jab step allows the body to get into the correct alignment which we call in the track world the Drive Phase. Excellent breakdown sir.

You are so right on the front leg/foot action! I have preached this for 30 years and call it a directional step/repositioning step. The knee cap must clear out toward the direction of travel- this clearing of the front leg/femur creates a pathway for the rear leg to pass through. Byron is so gifted he can get away with, in my opinion is a poor starting position due to laws of movement and biomechanics, having his lead arm open and behind him and his front leg slightly open at the start. The more symmetrical a players is the more action reaction forces help the movement. The key is to get the center of mass moving towards second base asap and get into the sprint acceleration position. The action of the lead arm and lead leg clearing gives an important reaction back to the rear leg to push harder. Like I said though- genetically gifted athlete can get by with less than optimal mechanics. Thanks for this vid!

I'm late to the party but this is spot on- Lee Taft, renowned Speed & Agility coach, calls what many folks [erroneously] call a 'false step', a PLYO step- to create a stretch -shortening reflex in the most direct line to the bag, while getting the lead leg aligned to drive back- arm action critical to all of it.

Great video man. And you're exactly right. I'm a long time speed coach, and to accelerate best, you need a shin angle going as horizontally as possible. So, that lead leg absolutely has to pivot backwards to get the best shin angle. Landing your foot forward of your center of mass will pop you up at any point. This runner could actually improve a little by bending over slightly more like Vince Coleman. This would help the lead foot come back a couple more inches and get his head down slightly more. Best to train athletes to get their eyes on the ground. I even tell them to look at their feet as soon as they move, then the ground after that, at least during drills. Here's the thing...people have a natural reflex to not fall. You have to train them to fall forward for best acceleration. You have to train them to get low enough to almost trip (during training.) This will beat their reflex to stay upright while training their hip flexors to pull up with enough power and range.

Hey Matt 2 quick questions. Did you play varsity all 4 years in high school? And we’re you known as one of the best on your team throughout your childhood teams?

He said he was for the most part, always on the good little league teams and an average player playing second and short.

Hey Matt I ask awhile back about how players like Sierra,Julio Franco, even Jeff Bagwell. etc. how the mechanics of their styles being how are they able to time are get the bat around in time to see the pitch and hit if that makes sense you did say u were going to try and put some film together just wondering how that was coming? THANKS

I respectfully disagree. The movement is actually a false step. However if you’re extremely fast there’s a good to great chance you still can make it to the bag safely. My question to you would be can the average MLB base runner get away with picking up his front foot first while heading towards the next base?

It’s about getting the shin angle In position to be able to drive hard. This is this correct way

You seriously have coaches telling kids to keep their lead foot in place and NOT take it back? I'll never cease to be amazed at what some people teach. You really HAVE to get into that sprinters starting set-up and then power forward. I don't think I ever saw a runner of mine not pull the lead foot back into positions. Leaving it and crossing over would SO slow you down. It just seems obvious. If your knee isn't in front of your foot (that angle this runner gets) then you will not accelerate well enough.

It’s basically the most intuitive/athletic way to start running. Tell Usain Bolt to start running from this position and he’s gonna do exactly that
