I never got caught stealing in my one year of sanctioned baseball. I used to count around 15 feet from first and draw an imaginary line in my head in case I ever reached base. Every time a pickoff was attempted I’d have to dive back and everyone used to laugh at me. I scored a lotta baseball growing up and have an uncle who’s worked for the dodgers around 27 years now, so I was always at dodger stadium watching and studying. It’s a shame I never got a chance to play at a higher level. But my high school buddy Ricky Nolasco played 12 years in the show. We’d have an extra work out day every Saturday than the rest of the HS team as pitchers. He even started 13 games for the Dodgers where his first 5 outings he killed it. His first bad start was the Saturday Mayweather fought Canelo. But still, he lived out every kids dream. Coolest thing ever man.
I never went back standing up either.

i was taught left right shuffle schuffle because you'd never have your back towards the pitcher. because the second you put your left foot is when most players in my league get picked off

Can you make a video on what you can do to throw farther when playing in the outfield? If you haven't done that already. I know you've done arm strength drills but I want to be able to throw as far as players like Bo Jackson and Yasiel Puig can.

I play 1st base and I see a lot of guys fade back and how I position is I stand on the back corner to receive the pick off and apply the tag and I've picked off more guys that fade back than guys that are on the middle of the bag because they dive into our tags
When your at first if the pitcher throws to first can you run to second instead of going back to first? Or do you have to return to first?

Havnt played HS baseball due to pandemic but when i played in middle school i think my lead was like 5-8 feet cuz with my speed i always stole the base. outa 5 years in baseball only gotten out 5 times due to coaches yelling at me to listen to them or my own fault...but ik HS is harder so once that starts ....hopefully.... I’m going to change some things up...and this vid really helped with that so thank you very much👍😎

What if the pitchers throws a Ball can you still run?
shouldn't you take your first three steps on the front of the bag and when that pitcher throws back, then attack the back side of the bag because if you take your lead off the front of the bag.... the pitcher thinks your lead is small by the angle on where he is at. that would give you an extra 1 more step to steal that bag or no?

Ik I'm really late to this video but the crossover is not very effective when stealing bags. Maybe at the younger levels but if you want to move up and become a better base stealer in highschool and college those catchers arms get stronger and the crossover step is going take away most of your momentum going to second base. Sure you may gain an extra step at the start but in terms of picking up speed that will stop it. I like most of your videos they can be very informative but these moves won't help become a better base stealer at the higher levels

Basically I just had a game and I got a free base. My coach told me to steal 2nd and I did but I thought that when the catcher catches the baseball I have to go back to the base. BUT NO!

having timed dozens of MLBers on youtube. i qualify as an 'expert' too. stealing bases requires absolute speed and acceleration. be able to run with a lead off from 1st to 2nd in under 3.5 seconds - an average person might be able to manage a 4 plus second run...terrible. if able to do second to third in under 3 seconds! - hall of fame ability. if at 3.28 seconds is very fast...Ellsbury, Altuve, Aoki running well...you are a bonifide base stealer. 3.7s...you are at 50:50 chances...approx. 3.8 seconds and above...what are you thinking, DOA, unless the throw is bad!

Always watch your videos, good info. However, I would highly not recommend a 10-12 foot lead. Even the worst pitcher on my team could pick off someone with a 12 foot lead. I would honestly recommend starting at 6 foot, seeing what kind of move the pitcher has, and then increase or decrease from there.
You have to keep in mind how tall you are, if your 5’2 and that’s how far off the bag you are you could lie day and be there. But that’s not what your doing your diving too, so you can add an extra 6-10 inches. But you also want to be far enough to take a step or two, so that adds another foot and a half. It seems like a lot been when you actually are doing it you’ll come to find your capable of a lot more than you think.
This is a generally good video, but the part about watching only the back foot is 100% wrong. A right hander does NOT have to take his foot off the rubber to make a pick-off to 1B in order for it to not be a balk. In fact, MLB Rule 6.02(a) says it's a balk if "(3) The pitcher, while touching his plate, fails to step directly toward a base before throwing to that base;" That specific wording actually indicates that conversely, he IS ALLOWED to make a throw to a base with his back foot touching his plate provided he do it correctly.
What he must do is 1) Not make "a motion not naturally associated with his pitch, "such as lifting the front foot too high, or begin a stride, swinging his free foot past the back edge of the pitching rubber, etc. "motion naturally associated with his pitch" is the phrase used but it is never defined in the rules, so it is umpire's discretion, keeping in mind that by definition a balk is an attempt to deceive a runner (being super quick is not at all an attempt to deceive, it's just being faster than his reaction). 2) His step must be *directly* toward 1B. 3) He must step *before* he throws the ball. All the baserunners my pitcher got out this spring were probably all guys who learned the same myth that you teach in this video. For his pickoff he lifts his front foot just enough to swing it directly to 1B with his toes pointed direct to the bag. He allows his hip to fly open to allow that leg motion that is 90 degrees from the set position, and as the leg is in motion he starts shifting his weight off the back leg to help with opening his hips toward 1B, and once his foot is planted he makes the actual throw and finishes by bringing his back foot around and allowing all his momenteum to take him directly toward 1B. This is a difficult move to learn, but with enough practice to get the muscle memory consistent you can quickly make it so that teams don't even want to take a lead against that pitcher should they get on.

The problem with what you're describing is that many umpires would call that a balk because of an attempt to deceive a runner, plus it also looks like the pitcher is going into his motion when he lifts his front foot up. Ultimate Baseball Training I will make one at practice this Sat as I am teaching it to my new roster of 13-15. Been doing it for years with umps who also do HS, college, and Cal Ripken/ Babe Ruth WS. Not once called a balk. Kid on my 16-20 team perfected it so well during th last game he nailed 2 guys in first and another in 2nd before they stopped taking a lead more than a step off the bag.

I have also uploaded one of the parents also recorded me while I was teaching it to them and running a drill with it. Because I don't have release forms from the parents and the players are under 18 I am keeping the video unlisted but will send you the link info.

It is impossible for a lefty to keep is foot on the rubber and pick to 1st without breaking this rule. This portion of the balk rule is obviously meant for right handed pitchers when we are talking about a runner on first base. A pitcher swinging his free foot past the rubber and having to deliver a pitch is obviously meant for lefty's with runners on first base. Once a right handed pitcher lifts is front foot off the ground he has made a motion that is naturally associated with his pitch so there for he has to deliver his pitch. Because a pitcher can slide step toward home makes the height of the leg kick irrelevant. Admittedly the rule book is not 100% clear on this, so this is my interpretation of the rules. I have heard about this crazy, possibly illegal pick off move before but I have not seen it in my 20 years around the game. I would love to see the video, it doesn't seem like you would be able to get much on the throw without spinning on the rubber. The physical motion of doing this is taxing on the body and could potentially lead to a right knee injury. Plus a good base runner looking at the feet of the pitcher should be able to get back in time anyway. Just another note a base runner should step off with his left foot first so his legs aren't crossed when he is off the bag. Left, Right, Shuffle, Shuffle.
Chuck Mahan, we do this routinely in 3 different leagues in 2 different age groups each year, in games officiated by the same umps who do the Cal Ripken WS, high school, and college games (meaning these aren't teenagers with just 6 hours of training under their belt nor parent volunteers. They arw paid, peofessional umps). It is up to the umpire to decide what is naturally part of his pitch, but most will say that once the leg lift decidedly becomes a leg lift that's it. We are 10 games into our fall season and the only balk that has been called was not because of the move itself but because the pitcher still learning the move was coming set with his front leg too much toward 1st and wasn't taking a step toward 1st--they felt he was just picking up that foot and turning it with no movement toward 1st base. Once my guy adjusted his feet to be more in line with each other he was fine.
Regarding knee stress, it actually stresses the hips because they must fly open. If he doesn't shift his weight properly he risks standing with his feet pointing directly to the left and right.
While my better pitchers do nail runners quite often, all my pitchers know the goal is to keep them close to the bag and not let them get a jump. If he gets the runner out it's a bonus but it's not a failure if he doesn't get a pick off since that isn't his primary reason in the first place.

As soon as you cross ur done...inside bag down toward the cut or all dirt toward mound...right foot then step w right extending your lead...stealing baes is about learning pitchers routines for good jump...coaches time pitchers to plate plus pop time of catcher...a 1.5 to the plate plus a 2.0 pop time = ball to catcher ball to glove at second...add another .75 and that’s ur time to steal the base...leads and steps and motion to “go” are BS...it’s all math don’t listen to this rec league advice
