Your video was detailed, warned about the hazards, but not condescending, so it gave me the courage to try this.

    I basically have the same microwave. I followed these instructions and it was the fuse that blew. I didn’t have a magnetic screwdriver so I took a magnet and magnetized it. Worked like a charm. Got an original fuse for seven dollars. This process probably saved me $150.00 repair bill.

    I have the same model of microwave. I tested all three of the door switches and they test fine. I installed new door switches just to make sure. What happens now is that after I replace the fuse and put everything back together I plug in the power cord and get the beep. I set the clock. I place a cup of water in the microwave and press the "1" button and the microwave runs for one minute and it does heat up the water. I then try to run the microwave again for one minute by pressing the "1" button. The unit goes dead and the clock no longer displays the time. The microwave is dead and the fuse is blown again. I've tested the high voltage capacitor (after safely discharging it) and it test fine. The diode also test fine. The magnitron test fine. After watching several youtube videos on testing the magnitron, I have come to the conclusion that testing for continuity and for resistance (ohms) the magnitron can still be bad. Visually inspecting the magnitron does not indicate there is anything wrong with the magnitron. Do you have any further suggestions?

    This helped me once. But now I have made the mistake of opening the microwave again while it was running. This time the breaker tripped, but when I reset it, it trips again as soon as I start the microwave, or the fuse blows. I have repeated the breaker tripping severally, and fuse blow up once. What could have gone wrong because of opening the door with the machine running?

    • @BruceAlanR
      @BruceAlanR  หลายเดือนก่อน

      I’ve had other microwaves over the years and they would just shut off when the door was opened. This microwave seems to blow the fuse if stop isn’t pressed before opening the door. I understand that the fuse blows to protect the user from microwaves, but I don’t understand why it only happens with these frigidaires. The door switches are also fickle in them. As far as the circuit breaker, the circuit breaker trips when the amperage of the circuit is exceeded. Could be the microwave causing the issue; however, check that there are no other high-drawing appliances (refrigerator, oven, even a toaster) running at the same time on the circuit. In newer kitchens there are usually designated circuits for each major appliance (microwave, electric oven). Our kitchen is a bit older and someone added an outlet to accommodate the microwave. The circuit is 20A and correctly wired with 12 AWG romex. The circuit was originally wired for outlets and lights which is common in older homes. Not a big deal to add an outlet except that they installed a 15A GFCI outlet upstream from the microwave outlet, which I eventually discovered and replaced; however, if I plugged in and ran a toaster or blender or vacuum at the same time the microwave was running, it would immediately flip the breaker. To test whether it’s the microwave or the circuit, I’d run a 12AWG extension cord to a nearby outlet and see if the microwave trips that breaker. That way I’d know if it’s the microwave or not.

Saw the video in its entirety, muted the beeping and decided to adjust the door so it opened easier. Door was warped and tough to open due to downward pulling. No longer shorts out! If fuse blows again, I know the cause and solution. Thanks!!!

      I wouldn’t say it’s completely safe. You don’t want to make contact between too many things at a time. Changing the fuse in this model isn’t as dangerous as changing out the door switches, which would require discharging the high voltage capacitor. That’s a bigger and more dangerous to do.

    • @BruceAlanR
      @BruceAlanR  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Did you put a cup of water or something to cook in the microwave when you tested it? You need to do that. If you did that then the issue could be any number of other things. In your case it doesn’t sound like faulty door switches, which I mentioned in the video. For example, other things that cause the fuse to blow immediately include wrong fuse rating or type or a defective part (magnetron or capacitor). I don’t recommend replacing parts other than the fuse since it is dangerous and requires discharging the high voltage capacitor. Recently I was replacing a GFCI outlet, which is on the same circuit as our microwave and upstream from it. I discovered that whoever installed the original GFCI outlet incorrectly used a GFCI outlet rated for 15 Amps. The circuit is rated for 20 Amps and appropriately wired with 12 AWG Romex, which is code. That may have been contributing to my issue, but I’m not certain about that.

      When you test after a fuse change be sure to put a cup of water in the microwave. After that, may be the door switches, but to replace them you’d need to discharge the high voltage capacitor.

    Is the fuse slow acting or fast acting? It’s not specified on the product page or on the broken fuse

    • @BruceAlanR
      @BruceAlanR  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are correct that the part gives no indication of whether it’s a slow blow (time-blow) or fast blow fuse. Looking at the filament, some folks are mislead by the thickness of the filament. The thicker filament wire would indicate that it’s a slow blow as well as the “326” on the
      original OEM fuse; however that’s not always the case. Sometimes fuses are marked with an F for fast or TD for time delay, but there are no markings. So the short answer is I have no idea.

      @BruceAlanR  13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      With our Frigidaire model I did a search of “replacement fuse for Frigidaire microwave [model number]” in order to find the OEM part number. Once I had the part number I searched “Frigidaire [part number],” which provided purchasing options the least expensive being a non-OEM part on Amazon. I read the reviews to make sure folks said it worked for them since manufacturer’s don’t typically share the fuse specifications (for example, slow blow, fast blow, amps, volts, etc.) in order to prevent folks from installing it themselves given it can be dangerous if you’re not careful. It also allows them to price gouge consumers for the part. Hope that helps.

    I got to say microwave replaced the fuse three times already it keeps busting. Can you tell me what else it could be please

    • @BruceAlanR
      @BruceAlanR  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If the fuse keeps blowing the most common culprit is the door switches. The switches are garbage in this microwave, which is why you should never open the door while the microwave is cooking without pressing STOP first. Unfortunately, changing out the switches requires removing the microwave from the cabinet and most importantly discharging the capacitor before going inside. That’s the only way to do it safely.
      I cringe every time I see a family member yank the door open at a downward angle or slam the door shut, which contributes to premature switch failure. Not everyone is 6’ tall though so I get it. If possible, the best way to open the microwave door to prevent the switches from blowing the fuse is to grab the handle and use a thumb to push off the side of the panel. That way the door opens straight without putting pressure on the switches.

    • @BruceAlanR

      BTW- I talk about why the fuse blows and how to open the door correctly at 7m:47s. I should have placed it sooner in the video.

      The video is for information purposes only so please proceed with caution and at your own risk. While technically it is possible to use a fuse rated for higher voltage as long as the amperage is correct, I would still advise against it. Additionally, the fuse in our microwave didn’t have any markers indicating whether it is fast or slow blow (again, this relates to current/amperage and not voltage) so I’d want to be sure to find a suitable replacement to be safe.

    • @miketyler7616
      @miketyler7616 ปีที่แล้ว

      No problem using a higher voltage fuse. It's best to use a coated fuse like the OEM. It keeps glass from exploding on a standard fuse. Amperage on the fuse, however is a must match. Most microwaves have problems because of door switches. Don't allow anyone to slam the door, and it's best to press stop before opening if you are in mid cook. The switches for years are just too small for the amps run through them. Door Switches again are the main cause of microwave failures

    • @BruceAlanR

      Yikes. I hope you figured it out. May have had a power surge. Sometimes our microwave trips the circuit breaker (some ‘genius’ put the microwave on a switched outlet… and while it’s a 20A circuit, the switch they used is only rated for 15A). In our case the fuse doesn’t blow so simply flipping the breaker back on solves the issue. Good luck!

      Sounds like the microwave is plugged into an outlet that’s on the same circuit as another kitchen appliance. Most kitchen circuits are 20 amps, so if a refrigerator and dishwasher are sharing the circuit and running at the same time, the breaker will trip. Usually refrigerators, ovens, electric ranges, each have their own designated 20 Amp circuit.

    • @hddrummer29

      @@BruceAlanR I am by no means a small appliance expert, but with this symptom there may still be something more at play inside the microwave. Mine does the same thing, but didn't start out like this - the first symptom was a tripped breaker only when the door was opened prematurely before cooking ends (and only sometimes). Like you suggested, we retrained our muscle memory to hit the stop button before opening the door which worked for a few months, but now it trips the breaker as soon as the cooking starts - every single time. I went as far as plugging it into three separate circuits, one of which a dedicated outlet...same thing happens on all. My microwave has effectively turned into a 'breaker finder 3000'. Could be a faulty switch, could be something worse - but either way, we have too many leftovers to reheat and not enough energy to properly diagnose and fix our issue...so I ended up just buying new. Cheers!
