  • Haval continues its onslaught of the new car market in South Africa with this, the HEV version of the popular Jolion. Is it worth the extra spend? We find out.
    Join our video journalist Ciro De Siena as he takes us on a thorough tour of the brand new Haval Jolion Hybrid, launching in South Africa on the day this video goes live, 24 January 2023.
    The Haval Jolion is now one of the most popular passenger cars on our roads, and Haval is hoping that rising fuel prices might drive more motorists to consider new energy alternatives, such as this Jolion HEV hybrid.
    But at a significant price premium, is it worth the extra spend? And how does it compare to its key rival, the Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid, which is quite a lot cheaper?
    We'd like to hear your thoughts in the comments below.

    I’m in Australia. Partner bought the H6 Lux HEV. On the highway yesterday, reaching speed of 100km/h the car was still in EV mode. Awesome vehicle. I like the Jolion HEV and would like to drive it myself.

    My view is that if you are looking for a hybrid like this and seriously considering the Jolion then you’r not too budget conscious - and then you may as well spend the extra R100k and get the H6 Hybrid - which is just so much more everything.

    I live in NZ and took the plunge in December 2022 as Haval had a sale and the Hybrid version just came out. Sale was possibly because Haval is nowhere near as popular here compared to SA. You can only buy the Ultra spec here for the Hybrid model but the sale reduced the $43,490 retail price although the "on the road" (registration etc) cost ate significantly into that "saving". Clearly SA is taxing the crap out of new imports, given what I can buy the Ultra version for here vs Super Lux there 🥴 However, it's not all taxes I expect - here in NZ motor or service plans are not included, you have to purchase that on top, if available. NZ government does sweeten the pot a bit given their clean car rebate scheme, again Jolion Hybrid won't get you anywhere near the rebates full EVs get but still a nice little cash back. One common truth is that you can still buy a heck of a lot of fuel for the price difference between the petrol and Hybrid versions.

    Just bought my corolla xs hybrid 4 months back, its been a joy to ride with.I am very sedated driver and get 5.3-5.5/100km. Seeing this review, i see this Haval is a typical suv with the hybrid addon. But i feel the entire mindset of those going for hybrid should be efficiency and not peak power output, pushing these peak torque figures means you are going to lose a lot of efficiency in the long term. The boot is a joke on this car and no spare wheel for that price point of 540k even for the base model is quite high. If you have the money and don't have the patience to wait for the corolla cross go for this,. if you just looking at peak torque figures just buy the normal jollion or H6. Just as Ciro says, i did feel the lack of power when i was in the highways, especially on this recent trip to Drakensburg from Joburg, but the power mode came super handy in the passes where the engine is more responsive.

    Thank you for the wonderful review. I bought a Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid XR. I was looking at the Haval H6 hybrid but at the end of the day I chose reliability and proven technology over some other extras that Haval is offering.
    I have been driving the Toyota now for 5000km and I absolutely love this vehicle. It feels like it will last a very long time.
    It is not fast but with that 1800cc Toyota engine, you get that quality that will last many years.

    A great solution to no spare wheel is fitting tire safety bands. These go between the rim and tire and essentially convert your tires to run flats at a fraction of the cost of replacing all four tires to run flats. Plus when it comes time to replace the tires you can replace it with normal tires and don't have to pay extra for special run flat tires.

    • @garyingle7440
      @garyingle7440 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Those bands serve no purpose except preventing the tyre from slipping off the rim when flat. Suggesting they convert your tyres to runflat is misleading

    • @wmtarr886
      @wmtarr886 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      there is another argument that if your use is mainly urban (i.e. this isn't actually an off-road vehicle) you are always within calling distance of a breakdown service and the beast hardly ever breaks down so why waste space on the tire that never gets used ?

    • @donsicariofx
      @donsicariofx 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Nonsense. Those safety bands are more of a headache as not all tyre shops have the equipment necessary to remove a tyre with the band installed. Rather just carry a small spare or those tyre can inflator things

      Toyota has been doing hybrids for 25 years so they’ve designed the battery to fit under the back row seat, while other manufacturers “retrofit” the battery and place it in the boot, using up valuable space needed for the spare tyre and cooler boxes!

    My only gripe with these Jolions is that they just do not look like their underpinnings are strong enough to support the car's weight!!! The tires look to small and it appears to wallow when driving. I have seen quite a few of them on our roads lately that appear like they are overdue for a wheel-alignment... I hope it's not the suspension rods \ axles that are bending over time; under the weight of the car.

    What scares me about hybrids and evs, is long term ownership. What happens when things start going wrong? These very high tech cars will be very expensive to fix. I guess ev owners will have no choice but to keep extending the warranty indefinitely. Perhaps leasing will predominate? There are going to be a lot of evs a few years from now, that are just not viable to repair.

  • @PhaimM
    @PhaimM ปีที่แล้ว +1

    So I did a quick spreadsheet looking at relative costs of a Jolion S with fuel consumption of 7.5L, and Jolion HEV with fuel consumption of 6L/100km, and their relative retail prices (used top spec models for each car), and even after accounting for savings in fuel, Jolion HEV works out about 80k more expensive after 5 years of paying off the vehicle. So I think they got the HEV pricing wrong. Granted its a premium technology with small numbers currently so you're paying extra for small demand, but there are no monetary savings realised with the HEV. You just feel good because you're saving the earth one accelerator press at a time 😂

    • @andrekok7634
      @andrekok7634 ปีที่แล้ว

      In real life apparently Jolion owners do not get to that claimed 7.5L/100km figure, whereas with this HEV model it is possible to get to 6L/100km or better as Ciro has demonstrated. So the difference would be less - but yes, I get your point you are trying to get across

    • @PhaimM
      @PhaimM ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@andrekok7634 fair point, I also added in a guesstimate adjustment for real world fuel consumption compared to what is reported, but I assumed they both increased by 25% whereas you say that jolion S is more whereas HEV is similar
      Fair. .
      I also checked again and the number of kms travelled per month actually affects the difference: I assumed 1000kms travelled per month, but as your monthly distance travelled increases, HEV savings also become more apparent, becoming cheaper at around 2700kms per month.
      So my earlier comment only holds in certain scenarios, but point is that it is important to do this exercise before assuming you will save money because of lower fuel consumption.
      Thanks for comment!

  • @andrekok7634
    @andrekok7634 ปีที่แล้ว

    Ciro, you provided a lot of confusing (and incorrect) info here. First, you mix up the kW and Nm figures of the engine and battery (and the engine is turbo charged, not naturally aspirated). Secondly, first you say there are two spec levels - S and “non S”. Later on you correctly refer to the high spec as Super Luxury. The two spec levels on the HEV is Luxury and Super Luxury. There is also a new “S” model (non HEV) with slightly higher kW and Nm figures than the rest of the range. Other publications have correctly reported on all of these new models. To err is human but I expected a little bit more from you in this video!

    • @Carscoza
      @Carscoza  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi there Andre, we have confirmed with Haval and the engine is not turbocharged as some outlets are reporting. Additionally, as we had the car early, before the SA press information was available, we had to rely on Australian reviews, which state the kW output as 139kW, not 140kW as Haval SA later stated. We apologise for the confusion around the name of the variants, that was an internal miscommunication. We endeavour to provide the first look at a new vehicle for our audience but sometimes that means we are working off of bare bones information, or information which later changes. We hope you found the rest of the video helpful and we thank you for supporting our channel.

    • @andrekok7634
      @andrekok7634 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Carscoza Thank you for the clarification, it is appreciated. I appreciate that you want the “first look” of a new vehicle out asap, but it wouldn’t hurt to just hold on a little bit longer to confirm specs etc. as it may be frustrating or confusing to watch as in this case. Lastly, as someone else has also commented, please consider testing the 0-100 figures as many other global channels do - especially on vehicles from Haval etc. which do not provide those figures. Thank you for creating all these videos, looking forward to many more interesting ones this year.
