- The coldest day of the winter season far doesn't stop us from getting outdoors and cutting firewood along with preparing our future garden site. After the cold snap retreats we build sides for our dump trailer and cook up Snowshoe Hare pot pie.
We appreciate you tagging along for our Alaskan adventure 😀

I have watched (and enjoyed) numerous videos the couple has provided. I don’t care what this man has for tools at his disposal, from a leatherman, sawmill or tractor. That woman is his greatest asset.
He's the beef and brawn and they are both the brains of the operation from what I see. Glorious combination. >@^_*@< Between them and The Outdoor Boys I want to live in Alaska too.
It finally got cold enough for you two to admit it is cold! Shocking!!! 🥶🥶🥶
😂😂 What you say is just the reality, cold enough for them, it makes me laugh 🤣🤣 (sorry for my english, I'm from the french part of Belgium)
@@jcma2820 You are doing an excellent job! 🤗🤗🤗
On the coldest day in the duck blind one of my friends who sits on the vestry at church told me it was cold enough to freeze the balls off a pool table. That’s the coldest I can remember it being out in the bay. We came home and drank hot chocolate, we didn’t stay out and cut trees. 😂
You guys grow, preserve, harvest, cook and eat the very best food. I love how you do all these tasks with intention and joy. It makes my heart feel good.
And doing it as such an awesome team. So wonderful how you work together.
It makes me feel good as well.
Yup, first thing I think of when I wake up to - 50 degrees, is that it's great day to start a garden, and kiss some frozen trees. But that's why I love watching you two just chilling out in the bush. Nice trailer! Yummy looking pot pie! Thanks !
😂 thank you for the smiles!!
😂😂😂❤
@@SimpleLivingAlaskawe simply luv you guys 😊❤
You two might be the only people who make chores this enjoyable. Thank you for consistently producing great content for our enjoyment.
Lordy! You know, we would watch you clean the cabin, shower the dogs, bathe the cat, and many indoor projects! I mean, only Alaskan's do yard work when it's criminally cold outside!
🤣
Your eyelashes had the most beautiful frozen snow drops ,it looked magical
Unless that's your eyelashes.
Lol
I think you are the only channel I watch from start to finish these days....
that , by the way , is very much a nod how you both balance each other.....from my point of view at least...
good stuff.
Thank you 🙂
Was just thinking the same. Most others are on fast forward or skipped. Not this channel❤️
One of my faves, “barn building in New Hampshire” I have to fast forward because I’m so bored of measuring, cutting, measuring and cutting, etc etc etc. words, words, WORDS. I want to see more animals, cooking, gardens, and interesting stuff. But I do love Ariel and Eric! Whatabeautiful couple!
I’ve been missing your garden videos. Can’t wait to see them again as you build out the new garden. =)
When we lived in the Northwest Territories our door hinges would freeze on the inside and the clothes closets would have ice on the back wall. Our oldest son 4 at the time got his tongue stuck on the door hinge when he tried to bite the ice off!! He screamed bloody murder. Eric you stayed pretty calm. We heated with wood but had an oil furnace for back up. On the coldest days it only burned like a little candle. Banking snow up on the house foundation helped because snow never goes below freezing. We only used the oil if we were gone for day. I loved splitting frozen firewood because they would just pop and split so easily. Our coldest day was -72. We stayed inside. It was so cold the smoke from the houses went down to the ground.
Snow not being able to be colder than freezing is a common misconception. While water cannot be above it's boiling temperature since the steam carries away the excess heat energy, the same isn't true for ice/snow. There isn't a mechanism that is providing heat to keep the ice/snow from being below freezing. That is why ice/snow has such different characteristics when it is very cold. All that said, snow is good insulator.
Wow! That pie sure looks good. The best thing I found for rabbit pelts is half and half plain old borax and salt. Stretch them out on a board and when dry work in some neats foot oil. I have 3 daughters and made each of them fur on the outside mittens. 40 yrs later they still have them. Great vids!
Thank you, I really want to make ear muffs!
I've barely heard of borax in my life. Last week I was in Death Valley and saw raw borax on the ground and the old refining and transportation equipment still on the land. And now I read your comment.
I personally think the two of you are wonderful. 👍 I Love watching your videos. I remember when I first moved to Alaska, people told me not to touch the doorknobs when it was really cold, because my hands could get stuck. Have Fun and stay young as long as you can. 🙏🕊️🌹🌻🌼☕💜❤️👍 Your Videos always make me miss Alaska.
Funny how my doctor said it's too cold right now for gardening. It's been 60 degrees lately! What a quack that guy is. 😂
My garden is in full swing, but I live in the deep south.
🤣🤣😂😅🤣
Kathleen Davis? My daughter’s maiden name! Haha! 😋
😂
I'm so excited to see what you two have in store for you gardens. I'm always impressed and inspired by all of your endeavors but am always especially excited to see your gardening content.
We are so excited to start the garden this year 😀
@@SimpleLivingAlaskaI also can’t wait to watch y’all. But wait I shall 😊
Yup! Looking forward to watching your garden grow 🪴!!
You two….working soo hard in the toughest temperatures! You know what needs to get done and you go after it…together! Firewood is a never ending, absolutely necessary resource. I’m impressed with your dedication to do whatever needs to be done. Eric’s project to build up all sides and the rear on the trailer turned out so well. Your pot pie crust looked yummy. Always cooking something delicious and/ or filling & nutritious in the kitchen. It’s a joy to watch your videos! Susan
I started watching you two last weekend and went through probably 15-20 videos. Got to know Bo before he passed. Of course made me cry to watch his video. Honestly couldn't watch all because I can't take sadness right now. Your videos bring a lot of peacefulness. I guess that's why I just keep watching them. TV isn't worth watching anymore too much trash on it. So I try to find videos that are serene and peaceful feeling when I need a break from life. Thank you!
In 1957 I worked as a fireman on the railway in northern Ontario. Minus 60 was not unheard of then.
Very difficult to keeping steam engines working in those temps.
You are ready to roar come the melt.
Yeah I remember in the 1960s in Timmins ON (I'm 68yo) being cold too and huge snow falls that my Dad literally tunnel his way out of our house.
I've heard of getting your tongue stuck to a flag pole, but I've never heard of getting your lip stuck to a tree! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Stuck? Stuck! Don’t leave! 🤣🤣
I remember how in elementary school me and every other boy in my class got our tongues frozen stuck on the same damn flagpole _at the same time_ because we had the brilliant idea of starting the _"If you don't dare do it then you're (words youtube censors here)!"-provocations to each other.
Our teacher was not amused having to come get us out of that with hot water.
_He was even less amused when we learned nothing and did it all over again the next day._
I really tried not to laugh, Eric! 😝😉
Lip stuck to a tree 😂😂😂
@@DutchAlaskagirl But the bell rang!
Those are tough little sleds. With every log y'all chucked in the sled I expected it to shatter!
You can hit them with a sledge hammer at 60 below ;)
@@SimpleLivingAlaska Those are tough sleds....I would pass on the sledgehammer test though!
My uncle used to go hunting for rabbits and my grandmother made a stew that was amazing. Thanks for bringing back those memories
I hope you make some hare gloves and hats to keep you warm. I've been watching you guys for a few years, and you are so wonderful to watch. Your music and videos get better and better. Thank you for sharing your lives with us. Better than any reality tv anyday!
My first winter I came up to the eastern Interior, in 1981, I saw -80° below zero. Cold snaps lasted sometimes for over a month. It warmed up to 0°F and it felt like t-shirt weather. Winter's these days are much easier, thankfully!
There's a city in Siberia where it gets 'that' cold and the school children aren't allowed to go to school below -60 bellow F. and they zip-up their cars in insulated tarps otherwise the cars will NEVER start till the weather gets warmer...Google it if you don't believe me!
Yes they really are 🙂
🥶🥶🥶🥶💫
Human induced climate change from all the pollution & poisoning being done & no true regulations ❤
What? - 80 ? That’s insane.
That was hysterical when Eric got his lip stuck on the piece of wood! I’m grateful that you were able to break free without too much damage! Love your videos!
We've all done the flagpole thing, but being stuck to a piece of wood is hardcore.
@@StGroovy my first time seeing that and I'm old lol
Eric and his Xmas story. lol
I’m sorry but I personally don’t feel like it was very funny. It had to have hurt like 🔥 😮😢
And I did think about the kids and the flagpole……..
@@Maria-ql3fc Welcome, I'm60 years old, and I never see this in that humorous way 😂😂 (sorry for my english, I'm from the french part of Belgium)
That cold is amazing and scary. A couple things when it is that cold. If you have any wind, get some Ski Goggles. Any exposed skin/eyes can freeze in moments when you start approaching ~-70 F wind-chill. For your windows, put some 6 mill clear plastic on the outside and hold it down with furring strips around the edges. Turns plain single pane windows into expensive double pane for pennies. For the front door, a bit of a project, but screen in that porch and put up the plastic over the screens in the winter. That will create a air lock and stop that massive heat loss when the door is open. It also gives you a fly free zone during the fly months. ... Cheers! Keep up the videos!
That pot pie came out the oven looking amazing and delicious! 🍽️
Despite the cheechako move of putting your mouth on the frozen wood 😂 , and not being born to it, you two are definitely Alaskans now! Love so much how you roll with the situation and make it work!
Cant even imagine how cold that was. It’s amazing that ANYTHING works at that temperature. You two stay safe, bet Beau & Bandit didn’t like pooping in that cold their poor little bums must have got frostbitten😅
Holy crap! Only two minutes in and we both agree, this should be an ad for that chainsaw 😆 amazing
Lip frozen to the tree bark ....that's a first for me ....I couldn't help but laugh with Ariel 😂😂😂 Glad he got his lip back with minor damage 😂😂😂
Oh man you guys…this weather is when you snuggle by the fire!
Ready to go at 50 below! 💥
Ooh that's nice 😃
@@SimpleLivingAlaska it’s Eielson AFB’s motto so I can’t claim it 😂. First thing I thought of though
Here I am, sitting in an Alaskan cabin, tending the fire, cooking dinner...watching you sitting in an Alaskan cabin, tending the fire, cooking dinner...but WHAT A DINNER! And I'm thinking, wow, aren't they amazing! Love your videos!
Too darn cold, Friends! I had a chuckle I need to share. I have a hearing deficit so while I’m watching sometimes I use the captions… especially when you are running chain saws or other motors… the captions that appear during the chain saw medleys are (MUSIC) or (APPLAUSE)I guess the grinds of the chain saw are meant as melodies to be applauded! What is to be applauded Eric and Arielle is your resolve to keep your dreams alive and well… Bravo! Love you two! 👏👏👏👏
I'm so glad to see that you have a dump trailer now. It will make it so much easier and less labor intensive in making your new garden. I can remember you guys shoveling dirt into a trailer back at your old place and that had to be tedious. I picked up when Ariel said about you aren't really up to shoveling every bit of dirt anymore; you guys are still kids in my estimation (my wife and I are both 73 1/2) but you are realizing as you get older it pays to work smarter and not harder. When you poured that hare stew into the pie crust, I was like, "I want some of that". Take care up there and stay warm. Spring is just around the corner. Love your videos.
Do you think the bees have a chance of making it in these temps? Oh thinking about the garden is a lovely thought.
They are still alive as of now but I won't be able to assess the size and if they have food for a few more weeks at best. They could pull through but I have lost a hive in early March.
@@SimpleLivingAlaska I will put your bees on my daily Prayer list! They deserve to survive and thrive!! 🐝 🐝 🐝 God Bless those little "sweet"hearts"!!
They are pretty stalwart bees just like you and Eric. I know you gave them every opportunity you could to thrive. 💐🐝🐝🐝
Frozen spit on a woodsicle? Who knew? That's why I love watching you guys!
It’s amazing that animals survive in these temperatures
Always so excited when I see you guys have posted another wonderful view and beautifully edited creation called a video, of your life! Thank you, for sharing all you guys share!
Shalom!!!! 🥰
Thank you ❤
You guys moved to the colder area. As much as I would like to visit Alaska I'll watch you. You make such great videos. ❤😊
Cracks me up when Eric revs the chainsaw. The captions say [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Hahahahha!
Growing up I used to split as much of our wood as I could in the dead of winter when it was frozen. It would just pop apart. Just an FYI all rabbits love banana. It was my go to to get them. That is if you can get one. All work doesn't wait for weather does it, but dam that's cold. Stay warm and happy. Jim from New Mexico. 😊
Getting those chain saws to start in those temps. Amazing. And Bugs Bunny Pot Pie, that would definitely work. Stay warm!
You guys make me wish I was young again and living in Alaska, it's so beautiful but I know that kind of cold can be deadly. I'm amazed at how well you guys are keeping the chickens happy and healthy in those temps. That heater in the coop must be a good one. I am looking forward to seeing your first garden at the new place, the old one was always beyond expectations.
When stepping on snow and it sounds like styrofoam, you know it's cold! 😆🥶
The fact that those trees can survive the extreme cold is a God thing! 😊 Divine design!
Google: "Charles Darwin" or "Evolution",
you are in for a surprise.
Absolutely a God thing!
Yep, they survive everything but a Husqvarna...😅
I put my faith in evolution. 👍
You got so much done, chopping down trees, making the sides of the dump trailer, and it was so very satisfying to see you making the pot pie. The way you crimped the dough made it look so appetizing! Bon appetit!
Alaskan besties, are you KIDDING me?!? Oh, crapola that’s cold!!! You are so incredibly awesome. I’d be as bitter as the air. 😂
Wow, the pie looked so pretty! You make everything look so good!
Yeah, you still go, because y’all did it smart. You started way further south, doing and learning and as your knowledge and skills grew, you kept moving further north. Now you can survive these temps and still be comfortable, productive and enjoy yourselves. I hope you’re proud of yourselves, you should be.
Good thinking getting the garden started! I spent a few weeks digging, shoveling and moving beds..in the Fl winter. I decided to get it done before it's to hot to think! Corn is in the ground, testing a second round of potatoes. BTW- a tip I used last year and by golly it worked! I got 5 inch pots, and filled them with potting soil. Stuck a potato in each pot- I transplanted those babies and they grew!! 😃😃50 degrees is all they need!
Nice!! Never thought to transplant spuds.
You two were made for each other. What a wonderful team; you both bring so much to the table in that your skills differ but complement each other’s strengths beautifully ❤ thank you for sharing.
Whoa, that's cold!!
I think coldest days ahead!❄❄🥶🥶
I turned on my space heater just to watch. I was raised eating squirrel, rabbit, quail, pheasant and grouse. Squirrel pot pie was always my favorite until you bit into a lead shot.
YES, the first one to like....but LOVE all your videos...comment after I watch. Tks
SO excited that you will be gardening again! You show us so many wonderful things, but I found your channel a few years ago when I was trying to learn to grow potatoes. :)
You guys make living in Alaska look like so much fun and I've decided there isn't much y'all can't do, but not even you guys can make living in Alaska look fun at -58 degrees!! 😂😂
Wow. When you panned to your roof…just wow. Thanks so much for sharing your life.
A length of pool noodle in the inside corner of the trailer would be the simplest fix for losing material on the highway. Kudos to you for venturing outside to get things done, when coffee around the fire would have been so much comfier!
Great idea! 🙂
Poor Eric trying to start the snow mobile😂 Ariel's eyelashes were snowy and long😊 I'm so excited about this new garden, and the rabbit pot pie looked delicious!
You know it's cold when you walk on snow and it makes this squeaky sound.
Y’all are hard core. I whine when it’s 32 degrees.
Brrrr...at least the mosquitos weren't bothering you when you were working on the trees. I'm really looking forward to watching your gardens come together! 👍
You should close in part of the deck to give a buffer zone. Also build a shed around the LP tanks that is supper insulated. In lying oilpan heater and in lying block/water heater plus a battery blanket!! Well once the Quanza hut is finished the snow mobiles, trucks and tractor well be much better off. It's hard working at those temps, crazy cold. Thanks for sharing. God bless and protect.
I've completely run out of words to describe you guys😮. There's got to be an award for the best adventurous, talented hard working couple!🎉
The dump trailer will be a great asset. Heavy loads, when dumping, will wear the battery quickly, keep a battery jump pack available, even with the truck charger, two or three heavy loads (gravel, loam) will drain power quickly. I keep a trickle charger on it always, but a very handy piece of equipment. A little larger one allows for moving your tractor, but that may not be an issue for you.
Greetings from Pakistan.Wow what a beautiful sunny morning with amazing view of snow capped trees.
You guys are really amazing and enjoying your working in such a harsh weather of Alaska.Appreciated your hard work for cutting trees and collecting woods in a well organised way.Good to see chickens are enjoying heated coop.
So excited to see trapping a rabbit and enjoying delicious food.
Keep traveling,working,hunting,cooking,eating, camping, fishing,gardening,canning and smiling 😊
As a South Carolinian, the coldest temperature I've ever felt is like 9°F, and that was unbearably cold to me. I cannot even begin to fathom what -50°F feels like, much less trying to do manual labor in it 😂
Wow!! -50 degrees, I thought -18 was cold when I hit The Netherlands in 1996 after living in South Africa. You have my respect going out there and felling trees. May I ask why not wait till the spring to do this? I never have laughed so much Eric when your lip was stuck to the piece of bark, never seen some one kiss a tree before, this is why I love your channel you guys are just so natural . Thank you for sharing and take care and look after yourselves in that cold. That pot pie looked delicious Ariel and my mouth was watering, the pie crust, yummy.
Drape a tarp over the rear tailgate area of your dump trailer and then tarp the whole load. That will keep material from coming out the back.
Beatiful day to be outside. Thanks for sharing.👍🏼
great video!!!! I just can conceive of 50 below zero, much less going out in it and working!! You two are absolutely amazing!!! Thanks for sharing this wonderful adventure!
Ariel,I just love your cooking . You and Eric need to consider putting out a cookbook,I will buy the first one😉
I would be nice to have a wood stove in the huge garage to warm up everything when it gets cold like this. All your vehicles and toys can stay warm throughout the winters.
I dont know how anything survives in that terrible cold. Especially the wildlife! So glad you're warming up and I cant wait to see your new garden. That trailer is awesome.
Erik Ariel, Old Russian Proverb "Don't kiss any frozen wood" When I was a teenager I had my own room (in new jersey). In the winter I had the heat ducts closed and always had the windows open. I slept in my undies with a sheet (never a blanket) and was fine until it hit 32F At which point I'd close the two windows but no other adjustments. Often I'd awaken to snow on the inside window sill heheh
But 40 and 50 Below...it's totally outside my experience and after 37 years in Oaxaca NEVER below freezing and Rarely above 80F (high desert) so I now complain below 45F....
The Hare Pie looked fabulous. Milk-Cream-SourCream-Yoghurt all contain varying degrees of acid so are natural meat tenderizers.
I'm looking forward to the gardening. Here we havested ONE vanilla bean (Which is quite delicious) and eggplant season is upon us.
All the best Jim Oaxaca Mexico, hugs to you and the the little ones.
you guys taking that slow ride through the trees was so pretty those trees are beautiful with all that snow on them
P.S. I really love your property. I can see why you wanted it. Hysterical to see Arielle’s eyelashes dotted with ❄️ snow!
Wow, that’s some cold weather! I could never handle that. It’s gotten cold this Winter but, no snow here in the Southeast. Your pot pie looked delicious! Y’all take care and may the Lord continue to bless y’all! 😀❤️
Looking forward to the garden project in the spring 🌶🍄🍎🌽🍅 !!
I've learned after 35 years in Northern Alaska, I'll wait for warmer weather to work in the woods. I stay inside and reload ammunition or work on the inside of the house or shop. I've found snowmachines and chainsaws break more at -40°F. Some Winters you've got no choice though
Hey one of my two favorite Alaskans.Next rabbit yall get try cooking the rabbit till almost tender and take it out drain it off really good dip it in beaten eggs and fry it like you would chicken with the flour and spices you like and after it's fried use the drippings to make a little gravy and put the gravy over the rabbit and some mashed potatoes. YummO.. Love you guys. Stay safe and warm. Spring is around the corner.
I apologize but I got a good chuckle out of the sped up section of you all starting the snowmobile
thanks you two, enjoyed spending some time with you today...what a life to enjoy........along with the hard work and long/ short days...
It's 16° where I'm at and I'm sipping hot coffee watching you 2. You are built way tougher than me!!!! Those tenps....hunker down indoors for me!😂 God bless you both!
They have a kid out that you can make any truck bed into a hydraulic dump too they're pretty cool they're not all that pricey you can't even tell your pickup truck is a dump truck fits right in between your frame Not mistaken you can get them from Princess Auto I was gonna get one for my truck when I used to sell firewood but never did
I just love you two so much!!! Always makes my day brighter when a new video comes out!!!♥️♥️♥️
Thank you 😊
Always a pleasure watching you Two … thanks for sharing 😊
RIP Bo, sorry for your loss.
Loved the Hare pie. Looked so delicious. No pun intended.😊
Never owned a Skandik but had a Tundra........loved that sled to death. Ran forever and did everything I needed it to do.
I spent my teens in northern New Brunswick and minus twenties for weeks was common, with many feet of snow, and we loved it. Many years later, I'm now in eastern Ontario where the weather is definitely changing but still into the minus twenties off and on... and we don't love it any more :-). Minus fifty? I don't think so!
That’s some tasty looking meat pie! OMG, 50 below. Bro, that was some awesome target practice. Slow-mo from above would be epic, but probably too cold for the drone. Quite the ambitious garden, can’t wait to see it. My wife and I truly enjoy watching you two. We get snow in the mountains in California where we live, so 20 degrees is cold, but 50 below. Wow.
Great video as usual.
The Hare Pot Pie looked so good. I love the strong flavor of wild meat. Can’t wait for you all to start the garden. So much to look forward to.❤
Who doesn't love a hot hare pie 😂.😊 ok time for a wilderness cookbook ,im certain with yalls skills it would be a smashing success. ❤
Yikes! We lived in a cabin north of Fairbanks for one year. This reminded me of the intense cold. When the temperature got up to 10 below we celebrated by going outside and firing up the barbecue because it felt warm to us ….no jackets, hats or gloves needed😂 The pot pie is just gorgeous
Great video. The pot pie looked really good. A Schwartz voice over saying “I triple dog dare ya!” would have made the stuck lip scene hilarious.
I love a thick crust with a savoury pie especially. I have had turtle stew but never any hare.
Stay warm out there and keep sharing the life journey with us. 👍🏼
I learn so much from every one of your videos. Today’s lesson: Don’t put your lip on frozen chunk of log when it is negative degrees out!✅ Sorry, but I laughed hysterically !! Do hope your lip is ok.😂❤😊
That pot pie looked scrumptious. 🤤🤤🤤😂Your cooking always sends me into a deep state of food infatuation. 😂😂😂
OMG. That’s cold I can’t even imagine it. Who sticks their tongue to a tree 🤣🤣. Great video. Yummy looking pie.
Now that is cold.
