The best of all reviews on this thing. Thank you so much for saving me 90 clams. Everything you said was spot-on. I'd just never thought of them. No one else mentioned them. That's NOT what I want after all. Whew! That was close! Great vid!
Thanks to you I just bought a lighter and I don’t smoke anymore either! Haha found the Field L looks to eliminate the bad points you mentioned about this S version. Keep up your awesome reviews! Best in the biz
Pretty cool lighter! A bit pricey. If you get a chance, check out the Saberlight Sparq plasma lighter. It's very well made, rechargeable, and definitely has a wow factor when you fire it up. It's windproof and only costs $16. There is a long stick version that I use to light the BBQ grill and works well on candles. Every time I use either one around friends or family, everyone wants to play with it...
If the lid doesn't close how do you change the setting on the ballbearing ring? I have read that somebody did it but didn't specifically elaborate about it. I'm afraid that I will brake it. Is it a clockwise or counter thread? What instruments are suggested to use. Looks very tight to me. Thanks for anybodies advice!
Meanwhile I found out something! The users manual says that you just have to oil the lid ring, but never mentiones what to use. I tried some oils (coocking oil, WD 40 etc.) I found out that the best is to use oils which are used in air-cooled engines. My friend has a Harley. I dipped a piece of cotton swab into it, put it on the ring carefully, so that the sparkstone doesn't recieve any, waited a day, dipped it again! Never had that problem since! It doesent matter how hot it gets, it closes. One more thing! I didn't just swab the ring but I rotated the ring around its place, on the metal.
Former smoker, carried a brass Douglass Field S lighter for the last 2 years I smoked and it is the best god damned lighter money can buy. Still carry it camping and hiking. They're not cheap but they are worth every damn cent.
That's a cool lighter. I'll have to try one out. I carry a Zippo (1 of a 100 or so). I have them from late 1936 to the present but 85% are pre-1968. The best ones made (quality & longevity wise) were made from 1954 to 1957. Find one in nice shape from those years and you'll see what I mean. Thanks for the review.
Zippo is a knock-off of an Austrian IMCO lighter from 1929. Zippo copied the Austrian design, but they removed the tiny hinged wick cap of the Austrian lighter, and replaced it with a large hinged lid. This resulted in a very large space inside the lighter lid where fuel vapors could build up: these then escaped much faster due to the relatively large junction between the lighter's lid and the body. So Zippos are worse than the lighter they ripped off, and in the last 90 years, Zippo have never even tried to fix the problem.
Not just important for survival. well in a way.. If you want to smoke and suddenly out of fuel it also becomes about survival so this extra fuel is really an aweesome idea.
Hope that you review a few more lighters, including the ones you quickly showed in this video. This looks purpose designed to light a cigarette or perhaps a wick you manoeuvre to suit (Molotov cocktail?!) that you would hold downwards over the flame. For everyday candle or gas stove/lamp lighting, maybe not so much. It might be a good survival tool to light a wood fire in an emergency but even then if you light bush fires regularly I'm sure there are better options that would make the job easier. Weight is 2.35oz BTW.
I used to smoke, I no longer do but i still keep a zippo or matches in a Altoids Mini's case in my pocket just in case i ever need fire, so I've been look at one of those little guys too.
I smoke only pipes; I don't think this lighter would work well for me. However, I think Douglass Field lighters are cool and will likely buy one just to have in my collection.
Hello...I have a Douglas Field Lighter S and I’m having a problem with the wick getting singed and then just smoldering instead of having a regular flame. Any idea what could be causing this? I put in a brand new wick from Douglas, but it’s still doing the same thing.
Reports suggest the Douglass L doesn't retain fuel any longer than an IMCO, so the design of those O-ring seals must be garbage. I've heard the Douglass S retains fuel longer (how long: who knows?), but I hear they have expansion issues due to the lighters being made of aluminum, brass (or brass and steel) rather than all-steel: aluminum and brass heat up faster, and the expansion issues mess with the tight tolerances. Plus there's the price - I can buy 18 IMCOs (not knock-offs) on AliExpress for the price of one Douglass S lighter. I'm sticking with IMCO.
Don’t think the field l has o rings, the field s does and held fuel for months for me. I had issues with a field s plus with the top cap breaking but besides that it works and works well. It’s a weird combo of rock solid durability and simplicity and delicate complexity though. Overall I like them and might get another field s + but not from urban edc supply they screwed me over
every lighter gets really hot if you use it for too long. A bic, this one or a triplex. The best for this would be zippo because the hot portion go back in the casing when you shut it down
That's much like the IMCO Austrian Lighters. IMCO Lighters are hard for me to light in the same was as well. It takes a bit of force to activate the lever to light the wick. I too like my IMCO mainly for its design values.
Well it is a cool lighter, but if you cannot afford it you can get a Zippo fuel canister and put the Zippo in a Ziplock bag. Or use a butane insert, I do this since I have no fuel canister.
as a smoker, this would not work what with the constant screwing and unscrewing--i'd just leave it open and all the fluid would dry up pretty quickly i fear--like the zippo--which is very affordable and also a piece of modern art(?)....
It is excellent and very objective review. But main question is what about spare O rings..As we all know rubber or silicone rubber don`t last forewer..After a few years, that rings loose their elasticity, and it must be changed in order to keep this thing waterproof..Is it possible to order spare packet of O rings or not..I mean this is very important.
It's called pressurized butane. Clipper and Bic lighters use it. That being said, I was jokingly going to guess that this was going to be priced at just under $100 because jokes lol. Holy fuck. Buy 2 clippers from Walmart for $2 that are refillable and have replaceable flint wheels. The jet flame Zippo inserts or the peanut lighters are also better
And the IMCO's top heating up can be used intentionally as a hand warmer, though it's a big issue for him, in this video, because it's a time limitation. For the IMCO, you yank the fuel chamber out while still lit and his time limit issue is gone.
I bought one of these. Not even a month ago. From Urban EDC and it’s a piece of crap. The lid on mine won’t close unless screwed shut. You are right. It’s a nice piece of equipment but in the general sense of a lighter it’s a useless and should only be used as a paper weight. Urban EDC are useless people too. Don’t buy anything from them. Especially a Douglass field S. You’ll be disappointed.
WORST experience ever with a manufacturer so far. Mine came defective. The lid wouldn't stay close and always popped open. That was an issue with a tiny ball bearing securing the cap. After several tries, All I had as a response from the seller was that the lighter was just fine and the problem was with me. Horrible customer service to say the least. Mine sits in a drawer, useles, afetr two monts of light use. I cannot say anything positive about this brand as I found myself talking with a dishonnest person who didn't not want to take ANY responsibilities for a defective item. On mmy side, I paid with real non§defective money and just received a piec of garbage for it. Thank you , but, no thanks.....
Maybe that inconsistency could be considered a safety feature for those with curious little ones that might this lighter in a desk drawer. Maybe? I dunno. :)
Except a zippo dries up in a week because there is no seal. The Douglass has o-rings everywhere and can sit with fuel for over a year and still light in my experience.

Making it out of entirely metal must've made it heavy. Don't you wish it were a... little lighter?
I guess with this review the makers would see....the light?
(points fingers) AHHHHHHH?
Heavy? are you serious?
not a bot Wait, it's a WHAT? 8-o
K.................sorry.
Give a man a fire and he's warm for a day. Set a man on fire and he's warm for the rest of his life.

Best budget EDC is the original Clipper lighter. Refillable butane, replaceable flint, and damn near lasts forever. Cheers.
It's not a petroleum lighter though, so we're talking apples and oranges. Best EDC petroleum lighter is probably the IMCO 6700.
The best of all reviews on this thing. Thank you so much for saving me 90 clams. Everything you said was spot-on. I'd just never thought of them. No one else mentioned them. That's NOT what I want after all. Whew! That was close! Great vid!
You are very good at talking. I enjoyed this review very much. Covered all the points of this lighter. Thank you, friend.
Thanks to you I just bought a lighter and I don’t smoke anymore either! Haha found the Field L looks to eliminate the bad points you mentioned about this S version. Keep up your awesome reviews! Best in the biz

It’s a modern take an the trench lighters used during WWII.

so in your experience the flame is sufficient and "the chamber getting hot" havent cause a problem??
@@o.ozanbilen7113 Correct, no issues in my uses.
That's a cool lighter. I'll have to try one out.

I like Nick Shabazz. His humor. His gear. His reviews. His 1920’s voice. EXTRA! EXTRA! EXTRA! ... is that accent NY Italian?
I’ve had many petrol lighters over the years.
And you can’t beat Zippos. The Imco ones work well, but are too short for my big hands.
Not just important for survival. well in a way.. If you want to smoke and suddenly out of fuel it also becomes about survival so this extra fuel is really an aweesome idea.

Peter griffin?
I'll call myself 'panache' from now on =)
Man, you seem to keep finding your way into my feed. It had been months then outta now where, BAM! Nick Shabazz is there.
It has a WW I Trench Lighter, sort o,f look.
Can you please do a video on maintenance? Some of us have wicks that we don’t want to jack up

Why was there a need for the knife or the pen? The bic lighter and zippo showed the obvious comparison.
You sound like some mafia from the godfather. Which is cool
every lighter gets really hot if you use it for too long. A bic, this one or a triplex. The best for this would be zippo because the hot portion go back in the casing when you shut it down
Only if there's fuel in it when you try to use it.
What do you get when you mix a New York accent with a New Jersey Accent?:
Nick Shabazz
F12
I like this guy's accent. What is it? Boston?
Like always excellent review
excellent well thought out review
So it's like a high tech peanut lighter??
The reason that the flame is far down is to make it somewhat wind proof
Great review
Where do I get one
Are you from boston?
That's much like the IMCO Austrian Lighters. IMCO Lighters are hard for me to light in the same was as well. It takes a bit of force to activate the lever to light the wick. I too like my IMCO mainly for its design values.
I opose that.. IMCO is great! 6700 especialy. Easy to light and flame is good.
I LOVE your accent!
Well it is a cool lighter, but if you cannot afford it you can get a Zippo fuel canister and put the Zippo in a Ziplock bag. Or use a butane insert, I do this since I have no fuel canister.
Holy cannoli dis guy knows his stuff

Hey Nick, do a video about your EDC and your EDC fire sources.
it is a high end imco. imco has been making this kind of lighter for like a century
Uhh.. ever heard of the Imco Triplex?
I can honestly say no.
You probably have to be a smoker or a bit of a pyro to know about those. I'm not a smoker.
Yeah but imco is out of business and its hard to tell the difference between the real imco' s and the fakes
Uhh yeah and they are freaking great and hold fluid until Judgement compared to a ZIPPO.
I have two of them. Great lighters. Too bad they went out of business.
You review lighters too? Subscribed.
The very prominent Jewish accent was a welcome change of pace from the usual kind of waspy guy who makes these sort of videos
Was looking at the lighter, then I saw the GS. forgot everything else
Meyer Lansky from Boardwalk Empire voice + George Castanza from Seinfeld voice = Shabazz Voice
nice vid.
just pull the wick out a bit...you should get a bigger flame.
I like it very much but price
Thats not safety mode. There is another seal there.
When I was a kid u could pick up these original retro lighters for pennies in junk shops now they fetch big bucks on e-bay
Are your initials actually JJJJ
check out the peanut lighters you can get a generic one 2 for 2.50 on ebay or a brandname tru utility lighter for around 15$
Review is coming up of those guys too.
Nick Shabazz cant wait 👍
Not a smoker also. That said it’s part of our be ready mind set to have fire and this just fails due to it staying hot the way it does.
I'd rather carry this thing than a zippo because it's Longer and so fits in my hand better plus extra Flint and fuel.
Does this guy actually sound like this?
+Robert Medeiros You get serious points for having serious cat as your profile picture.
Thank you.
Nick Shabazz you sound stereotypically kosher
Nice Grand Seiko
Didn’t know Gilbert Godfrey did TH-cam. Solid lighter though.
does it come in brass or copper would look more awesome if it did
I smoke too when I'm on fire
It reminds me of some world war 2 trench lighters I've seen.
Original IMCO 6700 can still be had for $15, can do all you explained in video that the Douglas cannot
And the IMCO's top heating up can be used intentionally as a hand warmer, though it's a big issue for him, in this video, because it's a time limitation. For the IMCO, you yank the fuel chamber out while still lit and his time limit issue is gone.
You sound super smart
It’s Kyle’s cousin, Kyle!!!
These were designed like the WW1 trench lighter.
More of a survival lighter than a smoker's lighter
How about this marketing slogan, "It's not a lighter, it's an affectation"?
This is lit
I miss the hippopotamus in the size comparison
Combat men In Black vibe to it!
This accent is so thick it just recorded Rocket to Russia
The lighter will ignite more consistently as it breaks in.
FYI - the flints are PROPIETARY making this a mehh option.

looks like a nice trench lighter
IM WALKIN' 'ERE
What is the purpose of this lighter? You get literally no useful flame to set anything on fire.
You sound like roket
Maybe that inconsistency could be considered a safety feature for those with curious little ones that might this lighter in a desk drawer. Maybe? I dunno. :)
lol what dont you review??
Your voice makes me want to hurl myself off a bridge. Great review though. Ha
Aww, thanks! 😘
His accent reminds me of my area next to New York. Just a touch of Mel Blanc.
Ohhh yaaas shapie
Buy a Zippo and throw a Delica into your cart for the same money!
Except a zippo dries up in a week because there is no seal. The Douglass has o-rings everywhere and can sit with fuel for over a year and still light in my experience.
no name I'm just talking for EDC. For outdoor use or survival/camping where I couldn't fill it up once a week I would probably take this one.
I 've use a dupont lighter when i smoke my pipes. I donn't know this.
A trench lighter by a new York/Boston accent.
98 bucks on amazon
Hey
#lighter art
Look at an IMCO
love your vids. anybody ever tell you that you sound exactly like Richard Kind?
lmao pretty sure this guy lives in NY
What a ludicrously expensive piece. $20, I could see, hell maybe $40, but $100?
It's a ww2 Dunhill design
Not very big not very thick lmao along with that voice
