    I don't smoke either but I've collected and restored lighters for years. I have the L and the Neo 4 but I find myself preferring the cuteness of the Neo 4 and the extra thickness in the fingers.
    You should also try and look up some vintage engine turned McMurdo lighters if you like high quality brass with heft. I have quite a few McMurdo table and pocket lighters. They are defunct offshot of Dunhill and often 100 years old when they come up but the workmanship is beautiful. They come in a couple of shapes and sizes but the pocket size hexaganol Bijou remains my favourite in terms of looks.

    I just recently bought the field l. I saw videos and it caught my eye. I smoke everyday so I use bics all the time. As soon as I got the it I ordered the neo model 4 and the field s. If you don’t smoke there’s really no reason to spend this much on a lighter, so I understand where some people say it’s too much. If you enjoy quality you will have no problem spending this much on them. My machinist friend who smokes with me saw it and ordered a couple as well, he said the quality of the machining is top notch for the price. Is there any real difference between zippo and ronsonol? I could only find ronsonol locally and used it.

    im having a hard time deciding between the stainless and aluminum version. If you had to pick one. Which would you choose? My thought process is I like the shinier aluminum look better but im afraid it would get scratched up. If this sits in my pocket with my keys would it get full of hairline scratches? I also like the fact that its lighter in weight. On the other side the stainless wont rust and would hide scratches easier.

    • @DalesLeatherworks
      @DalesLeatherworks  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good question! I would go stainless steel personally! The aluminum is lightweight but I feel like the steel is more robust and hearty and you’re right it’s more scratch resistant. The aluminum does take on a lot of micro scratches; the only advantage is it’s light weight

    I've been depating on a Douglas for a month. 90 clams gives a person pause. My beef with lighters is the flint wheel looses it's jam after a while. Sparks go down-slope. So, I caught on that flints themselves are not created equal. Red Ronsons have a superior reputation. I'll make the switch and combine it with the lighter L perhaps. It's all for naught though if I can't replace a smoothing wheel. Any thoughts? Other than making the wheels of tungsten, heaven forbid someone would add a whopping 5 dollar hardware accoutrement to get it right. Lots of fresh ideas for me in this top notch review. Good vid. Thanks.

    • @DalesLeatherworks

      this is true, i've had some flints that are awesome and some absolutely suck! the douglass lighters are so well-engineered that i believe the smoothing wheel could be replaced if it ever wears out (which it wouldn't for many years). glad you liked the video sir!! i'm thinking of doing an update here shortly, as i have a few new ones from douglass :-)

      out of all my lighters the small one is the one that seems to hold fuel the longest! what's interesting is, they don't seem to lose fuel by how much I light them, but moreso by how much time goes by after filling up. I think the fuel just evaporates out of them. most of them need refilled after 2-3 weeks whether I used them or not.

    These are nice and all but as a vintage lighter addict I just can’t justify these for my collection. The whole reason I got into this was the realization there are millions of vintage lighters out there collecting dust nearly forgotten while every single day we produce/purchase more bullshit wasteful disposable plastic lighters. I couldn’t stop myself from thinking “if we have soooo many of these things from the past that still work why would I want to get a brand new one when I could just use an old one?”
    I highly suggest you get your hands on a Beattie jet lighter. It’s a vintage wick lighter capable of creating a jet flame without the use of any pressurized gas. One of the coolest items I own at all hands down. Careful because it may end up sparking an actual addiction.

    These Douglass lighters seem a bit of a scam to me. They're now $125 for the L and $180 for the S. I hear the L evaporates after about 4 weeks, which is about the same time it takes my $25 IMCO to evaporate. In my experience, rubber seals don't do much to stop evaporation, but I guess it's possible that the designers of these Douglass lighters have solved the problem, but I don't have much confidence, since reports suggest the cap expands when exposed to heat (which will be happening all the time). But even if that's not the case, I just don't want to spend $125 on a lighter. I'll be sticking with my trusty $25 IMCO, which I bought off eBay years ago, and which I've used since then with no problems.

    • @addfuture
      @addfuture ปีที่แล้ว

      idk if you understand what a scam is. Yes the fuel will evaporate over time but it's about the craftmanship that goes into these that makes them so special and pricey, as well as the fact they aren't produced in a Chinese sweatshop. The design of these lighters are some of the greatest ever imo, if your lighter does the job then that's all that matters but there is a reason these are the price they are

    • @Beery1962
      @Beery1962 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@addfuture I've seen reports suggesting that the Douglass Field lighters evaporate faster than $10 Chinese-made IMCO lighters. As for craftsmanship, I'd say the Douglass lighter craftsmanship is questionable at best, with reports of the cap not seating properly, and faulty O-ring design making the seals fail. Quality can be determined by performance, not price, and these seem to underperform. I don't know where these are made, but speaking as an engineer, I can tell when a design is flawed.

    WORST experience ever with a manufacturer so far. My Douglas Field S came defective from the factory. The lid wouldn't stay close and always popped open. That was an issue with a tiny ball bearing securing the cap. After several tries, All I had as a response from the seller was that the lighter was just fine and the problem was with me. Horrible customer service to say the least. Mine sits in a drawer, useles, afetr two monts of light use. I cannot say anything positive about this brand as I found myself talking with a dishonnest person who didn't not want to take ANY responsibilities for a defective item. On mmy side, I paid with real non§defective money and just received a piec of garbage for it. Thank you , but, no thanks.....

    The Douglass field S lighter from Urban EDC and it’s a piece of Japanese garbage. The lid won’t stay shut unless screwed shut.
    Spent 150 Canadian (shipping and duty) and it’s going in a drawer and I won’t ever pass it on to my kids. It’s not a DuPont or Dunhill. So don’t kid your self.
    It gets hot as hell, doesn’t strike consistently and the flame is way too small. Barely can lit a cigarette because of the flame barely getting up above the wind guard.
    I use a lighter daily and this is not what you want to have in your pocket.
    It’s nice looking.....but sadly it’s a paper weight.
    Urban EDC told me to take a hammer to it and use pliers to unscrew the ball bearing ring.
    Really? Its effin brand new and didn’t work right from day one and they told me to take a hammer and pliers to it.
    It’s a crap lighter and it’s not an anomaly. There are way better lighters out there.

    • @DalesLeatherworks
      @DalesLeatherworks  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have 3 Douglass field S lighters and the lid isn't supposed to stay closed on its own, it's part of the design function to be screwed shut to keep the cap secure. Yes it does get super hot but that's to be expected with the stainless steel/ brass encasement. I find that function useful in the winter to use as a hand warmer.

    • @lifesalessonullrnwhnurthru4141
      @lifesalessonullrnwhnurthru4141 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunately you are incorrect. The lid is supposed to stay shut on its own even when not screwed down. Screwing the lid down makes the lighter waterproof.
      This info is straight from Dokei from the Tokyo Pipe company. So if you have 3 and the lids don’t stay shut on their own then you have 3 defective lighters. Thank god I’m getting my money back. Coolest looking lighter I’ve seen, but when it comes to functionality, sadly this lighter completely drops the ball. Inconsistent striking(because lid isn’t working properly in conjunction with a really small striking wheel), super small flame were I have to stick my cigarette way down into the wind guard and then on top, it gets way too hot way too fast.
      Anyways....it’s all preference. If you like the lighter, great, but I don’t because it’s a better paper weight then lighter.
      Have a great day.

    • @DalesLeatherworks
      @DalesLeatherworks  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@lifesalessonullrnwhnurthru4141 i agree they are the coolest looking lighters ever made! (at least from what i've seen) and i do agree that the flame isn't super big compared to some of my cheaper lighters (one of which shoots flame out like a jet pack!) i think possibly the reason why the cap doesn't remain shut without screwing it down is because the o-ring possibly got warped from heating. i checked and my newest Field S cap does stay shut on its own without screwing it down, but the older ones pop open (they didn't always) so i suspect it's the o-rings have become faulty from heat exposure. and like you said it's all preference. i actually don't use my lighters much because i don't smoke. i really just light them up to interact with them, and of course to admire the phenomenal workmanship. i would analogize the lighter subject to comparing quartz and mechanical watches: quartz watches can be super cheap but keep more accurate time compared to multi-thousand dollar mechanical time pieces which can lose/gain 5 seconds a day! i only wear mechanical watches, as it's the workmanship that i value over functionality in the broad sense.
