Old Gregorian Chant - Dies Irae (English + Latin Lyrics)

- "Dies Irae" translates to "Day of Wrath" and is a latin 'Sequence' attributed to either Thomas of Celano of the Franciscans (1200-1265) or to Latino Malabranca Orsini (d. 1294), lector at the Dominican studium at Santa Sabina. It highlights the horrowing events surrounding the End Times found in Sacred Scripture and the heavy judgement all must face on this last day.
This piece has been used in the Traditional Roman Rite for Requiem (Funeral) Mass for centuries, only being removed from the rite in the 1960's.
This is one of the Catholic Church's most beautiful chants and has been used many times in modern day movies and pop culture, exemplifying the universal beauty of the Church that appeals to people of all times.

Day of wrath, day of anger
will dissolve the world in ashes,
as foretold by David and the Sibyl.
Great trembling there will be
when the Judge descends from heaven
to examine all things closely.
The trumpet will send its wondrous sound
throughout earth's sepulchres

Death and nature will be astounded,
when all creation rises again,
to answer the judgement.
A book will be brought forth,
in which all will be written,
by which the world will be judged.
When the judge takes his place,

when the just ones need mercy?
King of tremendous majesty,

Righteous judge of vengeance,

Funnily enough this chant was compulsory for all pre-1960 Catholic Funerals (known as the Requiem Mass)
When I was a child I served at the altar. The Benedictine nuns used to sing this at funerals. To this day I love nuns.
Including mines too. Along with some Buddhist chanting.

Gregorian chant is even better than other church music because of it’s deepness and uncompromising truth. With other Catholic hymns you can sometimes relate the music to worldly songs, not so Gregorian chant! It is the least protestant of all music.

2:06 I would say this passage is not translated correctly
In that point is more "you that can provide salvation without charge", the words "worthy ones" or "reedemmed" as in the English standard sound too much predestinationalesque
I don't know Latin so I can't confirm, but the Catholic Church believes we are saved by Grace, not faith alone. The Catholic Church affirms predestination, but not Double predestination as the Reformed (Calvinists). You can either adhere to the Molinist perspective or Thomistic view of Predestination as a Catholic. In the end its a mystery, but man is incapable of saving himself, he's only saved by Grace and mercy of the Most High. Man is however capable of damming himself.
