That's the reason I prefer the original over the sequel. The original knew when to ham it up to extreme cartoony slapstick, and was also able to become a legitimately creepy monster movie when it knew it would be best. Towards the end, both genres combine into a lovely sorbet of comedy, holiday vibes, and classic horror.

"I thought this was a kid's movie." I hear that line surprisingly often in reaction videos to older movies. XD
You also need to watch the second movie. A lot more fun and silly moments, more action and less horror than in the first one, but still great. It's not really a Christmas movie, however.

    • @67Daidalos
      @67Daidalos 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I don't see why this wouldn't be a kid movie. I saw it when I was around 6 or 7, and never be traumatised by it. Well... Ok, I also watched movies like Jaws by that time and the Nightmare on Elm Street or Robocop movies when I was 9. But I remember being a very pragmatic kid, always dissociating fiction from reality, and kinda not getting emotionnally invested in it... maybe that helped.
And there's also maybe something we tend to occult since the last 20 years... it's that kids love to challenge themselves with scary things. And I daresay it's shame we didn't let them do it... with parental supervision, there's no reason it ends badly for them.

I saw this movie for the first time when I was way too young for it, even though it was rated PG. I pulled it out of my dad's DVD collection one morning while my parents were still asleep because it had a cute little furry guy on the cover. It gave me nightmares for months, I was scared of the dark for years, AND the bank scene with the girl's story about her dad is how I learned about Santa. But years later I watched it again and I actually loved it. It's been one of my family's three annual Christmas movies ever since (along with Die Hard and Scrooged). Great reaction! And great movie choice as always! 😊👍

The term "gremlin", denoting a mischievous creature that sabotages aircraft, originates in Royal Air Force (RAF) slang among the British pilots stationed in Malta, the Middle East, and India in the 1920s, with the earliest recorded printed use being in a poem published in the journal Aeroplane in Malta on 10 April 1929. Later sources have sometimes claimed that the concept goes back to World War I, but there is no print evidence of this

28:18 This was something you could do in some stores at the time. To show off how good camcorder footage could be, many stores had them set up with the output connected to their TV display, so you could stand in front of it and see yourself on a wall of TVs. The camcorder would often have a sign on it saying 'Smile, your on TV' or similar.

Under the contract he was on, Spielberg wasn't allowed to direct other films while working on his main one. Hence this, and Poltergeist, are listed as "Steven Spielberg Presents" films, when in actuality he did most of the direction on both of them.
Spielberg likes to prepare one film while being on set for the other, now that he can bankroll his own films this is just the accepted way he works. For instance he was working on Jurassic Park whilst on set for Schinders list, IIRC.

yeah you have to remember that Gremlins as a term was actually first brought up during the 1930's during World War 2. Airmen and most soldiers during the time blamed faulty machines and malfunctions on little mythical creatures. some big time companies even made shorts and failed ideas of movies based on the critters like Warner Brothers themselves with Bugs Bunny and even Disney themselves were gonna make a live action/animated hybrid with the story of pilots dealing with them. there is a book called "The Gremlins" that it was based on and the characters are in the Epic Mickey games but it stinks we never got that movie. would have been like Roger Rabbit i bet.

Your face when the Dad started to talk about his invention again in the end. Priceless! 😂
I hope you're going to check out Gremlins 2 as well? It's very different in tone and leans more on a heavy comedy/parody side. But I think you'd still have a fun time with it!

I don't get why people get annoyed with Billy in the end, they act like he didn't decapitate the one strangling his mother in one swipe and then blew up at least 1000 of them in one go. Still sad he left his sword at the pool through, though I guess I can't blame him for panicking and running.

Lol, I've always loved this movie growing up. Kinda surprised I was never afraid of this movie because I would have been three when this movie came out. My grandma loved going to the movies. I believe she took me and my older cousin to see this in the theaters when it came out. She was always taking us to the movies lol not all of the movies she'd take us to see were exactly what would be considered child-friendly. lol, one of my favorite scenes is the theater scene when all of the gremlins are watching snow white. The only time when you could actually consider them kinda cute. Are you planning on watching the sequel at some point?

3:12 So that he can keep an eye on him, so that he could take care of him. Unless you're working at the chemists, what's generally located around the back area of the store is not for sale. 'Baba' as we heard Gizmo call Mr Wing at the end means 'father' apparently. 'Mogwai' is Cantonese for either 'demon' or 'devil' - Gizmo knows what the word means and knows he has to be careful about being near water and when he eats, you can tell. When Randall is talking about the water rule if you listen carefully you can hear Gizmo say 'Glug glug' and then 'no no no no'

  • @phousefilms

Excellent. Now, you are required, by law, to watch "Gremlins 2:The New Batch"(I personally think its better than the first!) It does a bunch of jokes based on the first one and doesn't take itself as seriously.
I still think there are a lot of scenes in this movie that are great. The man dropping the mail in the mailbox and hearing the gremlin gurgle "Yum yum!"and then spit out the letters one after another makes me laugh so hard. And the gremlins not only terrifying Mrs.Deagle, but also offing her is great.
The novelization for the film went into the backstory for the Mogwai(which means "demon", btw).Alien scientists created them to be the perfect pet to send across the galaxy and promote unity between different planets. However, the pets had a number of defects(such as their multiplication after touching water and allergy to light), not to mention only one in a thousand were actually benevolent and good, while the rest were destructively mischievous or downright homicidal.
Originally, the mogwai were actually going to kill Barney, but the higher ups believed it was too far.

Back when practical effects was the only way, editing was so much more important. Some directors still agree it is. They just shoot a lot of film, but the editor makes it into a movie.

That was awesome that you immediately recognized Jonathan Banks in the film. I don't know if you have ever seen the Tim Allen show Home Improvement but the woman who plays Mrs. Deagle is the same actress who plays Jill's mother in the show. I really love the main theme song in this movie, it's really catchy. Every time I see the part where the gremlins are dressed in winter clothes posing as Christmas carolers, it always cracks me up to point where I just loose it. It's actually kind of cute imo.

Fantastic classic for kids who weren’t afraid of the dark, lol!
Yes, it would be best to watch some of the classic classic stuff. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was so ahead of its time. Citizen Kane was a purveyor of film techniques. The Miracle Worker with Anne Bancroft and Patty Duke gave the best performance of their career. Rear View Windows is thrilling. Seven Samurai inspired the Seven Magnificent, and so many more.

Glad to see you recognised Jonathan Banks as Deputy Brent.
My (not too serious) theory is that when the authorities covered it all up, some of the ones involved was allowed to change their identity and move elsewhere. Brent survived and moved to Philadelphia and continued working as a police officer, assuming the obviously fake name Mike Ehrmantraut. That just sounds made up, right? His frequent checkups was blamed on his service in Vietnam as a former marine, but was actually to help him deal with the gremlin encounter.
Knowing how there are worse monsters than criminals out there, Mike stopped taking his law enforcement duties as serious anymore and became more and more corrupted. His only focus became keeping his family safe from any future gremlin outbreaks, to the point that he even worked with the likes of Gus Fring to do this.
    Just my theory. ;)

A few years back my friend invited me to a comic con at a nearby city to meet a couple of the original Power Rangers and I didn't realise until we were near the head of the line that Zach Galligan (Billy Peltzer) was at a nearby celeb table. At the time I thought you had to pay to get an autograph to even go up and say hi and I didn't have the money for it. I would have loved to have met him and chatted to him. Regret...
