It’s likely that every time Madeline gets close enough, Badeline pushes her back. She doesn’t want that “comfort”. She just wants Madeline to give up and go home, but Madeline doesn’t want to.
That scene at the end where she thinks Madeline is getting rid of her is actually rather sad. In a way, Badeline thinks she's about to "die" more or less. Because there's no reasonable way that Madeline could have 'set her free' without causing that part of herself to be lost forever, which still would have hurt her.
The game has 2 major powerups, the feather, and the 2nd dash. And both of them are tied to really powerful moments in the story. The fact that these are what gives Madeline extra strength and abilities in the game also has a ton of emotional weight to it and I can't remember any other game doing that so well.
4:00 i really love how at first the moving blocks are dangerous, but now they're helping you. Like badeline is slowly learning to work together, even if she thinks she doesn't want to yet
