Because there's no reasonable way that Madeline could have 'set her free' without causing that part of herself to be lost forever, which still would have hurt her.
The game has 2 major powerups, the feather, and the 2nd dash. And both of them are tied to really powerful moments in the story. The fact that these are what gives Madeline extra strength and abilities in the game also has a ton of emotional weight to it and I can't remember any other game doing that so well.

As someone with diagnosed anxiety & ADHD (and probably some OCD symptoms), it really struck me how Madeline doesn't even just accept the fact that she has depression, but she openly loves herself and validates her own emotions, just without losing hope or over-dwelling. This game really means a lot to me now.

Man it looks so easy on better hardware. I've been playing the port on the RG351P and this level (and a few other rooms) sadly lag pretty hard. Managed to do it without assist, so far have only needed that during one screen in the game that lagged way too much, but wow... Obviously a massive big up and thank you to the people doing the porting efforts on the older hardware but yeah... When it flows the game is clearly not in the same ballpark when it comes to difficulty. This is noob casual easy mode to my eyes.😝
