[TAS] Farewell (Celeste Chapter 9) in
ฝัง
- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 13 ต.ค. 2021
- Recorded on CelesteTAS version 3.5.19, Everest version 3070 stable, and Celeste version 1.4.0.0 XNA from Steam.
59.976 Seconds (3528 frames) saved compared to the previous TAS 9 months ago.
The biggest advancements have been moon spring multi-boosts, and an infinite height glitch to perform a sequence break and skip the "set dashes to 1" trigger at the start of the level. Once stubbornness is reached (the cassette block section), your dashcount is reset back to one.
Huge thanks to Lmjacks for assisting with feather inputs, tmCalvins for optimizations throughout Stubbornness and Reconciliation, and Cr33pyCat for TASing the first half of the chapter with me. - เกม

Grief speedrun.
dumbgroup for all intents and purposes it's close enough to 10 minutes
I love how story-wise, this is just Madeline speedrunning the five stages of grief
Madelines tired of having to relive the grief,so she decided to become invincible and travel at the speed of light
"I got places to be and things to do, grief is for the weak!"

This TAS guy is so good at every game he plays, he almost plays like a machine
Yeah, so good! Amazing even, so that so many TH-cam channels showcase his runs!
@cuddlybubbles69 it really sucks that everybody is reuploading his runs

"I got the Farewell TAS down to a sub 10" "Oh nice, what's the final time?" "9:59.998"
It wasn't coincidental, the main contributor was just tired to continue optimising and was happy with a sub 10. The community found almost 3 second of timesave to this TAS in the last few days

quite literally climbing on solid air
its oilskip
its about the idea of covering yourself in oil when it rains, and because oil floats on water, u fly
its called oilskip because it makes exactly as much sense
@@anonymous-hj7zn yeah. incase anyone actually cares or wants to know how it’s done: you interact with the grave for one frame and then jump for the next two frames. then you kinda just *ascend.* to keep the two dashes you have to do some really precise dashes to get over the trigger that starts the cutscene that removes the second dash. there’s a video that explains it much better though and i believe it’s called “how to do oil skip in farewell” or something idk.
"What do you want to do?"
"ASCEND"
You know what is so impressive about this game? It was made to be broken. The game never stuttered, the bird and Badeline kept up, and the developers don't patch out holes or exploits, probably because they are there to be found. The tas skipped 3 screens and the game didn't even bat an eye. Absolutely incredible game design!
Also, did anyone else note that no jellyfish were harmed in the making of this tas?
Also there was that one room at about 4:53 that required spike clips which AFAIK are TAS-only. Maddy really thought of everything!
@@sly1292 They aren’t TAS only, very *very* hard and precise, but very doable in real-time
They’re called demo-dashes, and they are done by pressing down, dashing, and releasing down on the very next frame so you dash horizontally with a crouched hit box, which allows Madeline to skip through some spinner walls and other obstacles. An example of this is 3A, when you approach Oshiro and he creates a wall of sludge, you can skip the section below it and demodash through the sludge.
Most runners have this move mapped to a button, making demo-dashes easier.
Still very precise, but they are viable RTA.
@@redinahedge3073 Cool, my bad. Still really cool that speedrun tech was factored into the design of the level!
@@sly1292 I’m pretty sure those demodashes are easier than unintended demodashes, I believe 2 or 3 more pixels wider
@@sly1292 Normally, demodashes (for people unfamiliar, where you preserve your crouching hitbox while dashing, allowing you to scoot between normally-impossibly-narrow gaps) are used to dash between spikes/dust bunnies etc because Madeline's crouching hitbox is 4px and the separation between the spike entities' hitboxes is also 4px, right? So, if you are literally sub-pixel precise with your movements, you can scoot between the hbs and dash through a "solid" wall.
Well, it honestly looks like those entities miiight have a wider-than-4px gap, maybe 5px, but I don't actually know. It's possible this was intentionally created as a demo-spot, because otherwise Farewell wouldn't have so many good spots for speedrunners to obsess over lol.
Maddy&Friends are extremely extremely encouraging of the speedrunning community and like... the whole game is designed around being ideal for any level of skill, with Assist Mode at the entry level and extended demos and shit at the ultra-elite level. So, since Farewell is already using like 90% of the speedrunning community's techs as just normally gameplay shit... it would make sense, to me, to design in places where some techs are a little more useful, in order to explicitly encourage that kind of challenge.
I absolutely fucking love Celeste TAS speedruns because it is the literal epitome of "this is not how this is supposed to work but let's do it anyway" and then she just suddenly is going the speed of light. The joy I feel as the tas rejects the game and just plays a different game instead is fucking phenomenal
I feel you😍
Everything about 4:10 might just be the coolest sequence I have ever seen in this game. Getting out of the playable area, using the Kevin block that was supposed to just be an easter egg, and then the following room after is just incredible.
yeah that's some Peak TAS shit right there lmao
i cannot put into words how fucking happy and awestruck i am that kevin room is a tas strat
Funniest part is that jacks (the one who tassed this part of the tas) didn't even know that it was contributing to this REVOLUTIONARY run!
oh wow hi shayy
@@SemiHypercube oh wow hello you
For anyone who dosent understand why this is such an incredible run here it is: In farwell, you should have one dash for almost all of the chapter. In the start of the chapter, the bug the tas is doing (rta viable btw) lets us conserve our two dash state for 2/3 of the run run, making fw a newgame+ run sorta (2 dashes).
How the fuck is it working ?
@@ladolyfamily9753 It's an infinite height glitch, the mechanism is as follows:
In a celeste cutscene, you have 1 frame to control madeline before she starts moving on her own, in that frame you can jump, normally the game has ways to stop this, by setting your vertical speed to zero, but for some weird reason, if you hold jump for another frame, your verticle speed will still be upwards. Combine this with the fact that gravity is disabled in the game when a cutscene is playing, you can go upwards into the next room, skipping the cutscene that gives you only 1 dash.
@@ordinaryshiba So if I just open up Farewell and hold jump on first frame of the cutscene, I can have 2 dashes for the 2/3rds of Farewell?
@@DCRedKing the thing is you need to press talk to activate the cutscene and you can't jump while you press talk and are in talking range, so you need to press talk and jump at the same time, then immediately release talk and still hold jump, then you need to estimate when you go to the next room and then dodge the trigger in that room, but yes, if you can do that, you can have 2 dashes for 2/3rds of fw
You can do this with pause buffering btw, so it's not too hard but it's still hard, mostly because of the second part where you dodge the trigger
whenever i watch this i just imagine how happy the TAS team must have been after seeing the timer read "9:59.998" at the end of the TAS. that must have felt real good for everyone involved.
local transfem trips out and speedruns the 5 stages of grief in 10 minutes. more after the break.

crow jumpscare
If humans could do this:
“We are leaving in 10 minutes!”
“That’s enough time for me to finish farewell”
It's 10 minutes IGT though. With every dash, the timer freezes for 4 frames, so every 15 dashes make the IGT lag behind another second. That's why this video is almost a minute longer instead of just a few seconds buffer at the start and end.
@@nuffin7411 just stop time in real life every time you dash smh

edit: ok i just watched the video and... holy shit. what the fuck. what the fuck. what the FUCK. i... what. this is the craziest thing in this game, hands down. i've been in this community for nearly three and a half years, 93% of its entire existence, and not once have i seen anything like this. i sat there watching in utter shock for the whole damn video. there are no words that can describe the awe i felt seeing that.
vamp and cr33ps, thank you for all you've done for this community.

I cannot put into words how incredible of a run this is. This is such a big breakthrough for this level and if this is/can be made rta viable then this would break the entire level wide open. I'm so excited for whats to come of this
Every TAS I see I’m thinking about casual players going “why is madeline going through spikes”, it’s unreal how broken the game can be in speedrunning while still being playable in a casual playthrough
im a casual player (could even be called a newbie, i got the game during the steam sale) and the only reason i know some stuff is because of a friend who constantly talks about speedrunning strats
Can you explain? How is he going thru them?
@@frankhungch It's a trick called the demodash and it basically allows you to "crouch-dash" in mid-air and reduces your hitbox height. It's a trick that was discovered in Chapter 3 to skip a big portion in speedrunning, and it can be used in many other places. The devs actually included a special room in Farewell that uses 2 demodashes in a row and skips a small chunk of the level, although unlike in chapter 3 where you can have an easy setup, here you kinda have to wing it.
I’ve never seen these levels, so what’s most incredible to me here is that despite taking every conceivable shortcut and absolutely blazing through the level, it still takes ten minutes to go through the whole thing
4:06 DUDE. This room was already nuts, and you guys just went and made it even more ridiculous. Who came up with the idea of using the kevins in that room? Also the room after...o_O
creeps wanted to use them for a similar skip for pretty long but that is impossible with 1 dash (original plan was going through spinners with the feather and go inside the gap), works with 2 tho
i think i came up with the strat like a month after fw came out, bunch of people took a crack at it but it was never really that close to working
Door skip at 2:27 confirming this as an official run.
That glitch that lets you skip the 1-dash flag is fucking amazing
did i think sub 10 would happen eventually? yes. did i think this was how? hell no.
my favorite part is that the green timer at the end implies its not even a PB
absolutely fucking phenomenal. honored to be part of the community for this strat's discovery
10:21 *_man just randomly goes around a block and teabags at the speed of light at the end of a speedrun_*
It's always interesting to see the stuff that's pretty close to normal gameplay mixed in with the stuff that can be fully optimised
ive very, very rarely been that amazed in my life. thanks

Can't believe the new TAS was made this quickly. Good job dudez!
utterly insane, great work
KEVIN ROOM TAS STRAT I AM IN TEARS
THIS was what was needed to get sub10 Farewell? Can't wait to see where it goes from here goodlord
Edit: 4:10 is quite possibly the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen done in vanilla Celeste, can't help but just laugh at the absurdity. I don't think beating this is possible LOL
about .35 seconds have been saved do far
there's got to be a bunch more frame saves somewhere in this tas, and people who actually tas this are good at just finding places to just conserve those slight frames and make this tas much faster, but unlikely that there will be another huge improvement like this one
@@suzhengchong2593 the last TAS time is 8:18.984 LOL
@@geck-eye6930 was it small time saves or one huge improvement?

2 dashes in farewell+TAS just breaks the game
4:20, this is so sick
Ok wow this is phenomenal.
this kind of feels like watching farewell superdash tas for the first time again
Why have spikes at this point, that was incredible
I decided to watch this TAS to see how far I am in this chapter and how long it took compared to the TAS
It’s already insanely difficult as it is, and I’m dreading knowing that what’s just two minutes in for the TAS, is several hours for me
I’ll see you in a long time if I can actually beat this level
Did you beat it?
Don't worry, I felt the same way when watching a guide video! Several hours of gameplay and only 1/6th through the guide. You got this!
I know for me, I actually didn't beat farewell the first time (got to the heart wall, and then dropped the game after completing 3 B sides, got too lazy for the rest). About a year later, I picked up the game again, rebeat all the A sides, this time got past the heart wall, and then went on to 100% the game besides golden berries. Essentially, even if you have to take a break, I would keep going at it - it's truly such a good game
Impressive. God job TASsers

@@abuffzucchini Ok that made me laugh
@@abuffzucchini ohhhhhh ok I thought it might’ve been Hollow Knight but that makes way more sense
Could someone explain how this actually works
to quote Vamp:
"start the cutscene by pressing the interact button. Next frame the button has to be released, and jump needs to be held for two frames. (this can be free with pausebuffering)
Once youre rising, a good cue when to skip cutscene is to scroll through the dialogue until the birds appears onscreen
Next, do a super off the moon block and dash over the "set dashes to one" trigger to skip it."
@@MarbleBlastDaily thank you!

One word to describe this showcase. WHIPLASH.
I have no idea what's happening, but still impressive!
It took 6 hours for me to beat this one chapter and it really is satisfying to watch madeline speed through the whole level in 10 minutes with perfect controls

This is the purest form of why I want to play games like this
“I don’t need either of you! You’re both garbage compared to my corner boosts and ultra dash!”

i will gladly admit that for 99.8% of the video i had no clue what was going on, but hell this was fun to watch

That is what flashback looks like, before you die.
"you didn't prepare me for any of this" the tas literally being programmed to beat the level in less than 10 minutes being well prepared:
