    I'm a guitarist and a beginner fiddler. It only seems natural if not obligatory that I get a mandolin in the future. What a beautiful sound!

    That chord that begins with the G chord is a Gsus4 chord. When you move from the B note to the C note that is the sus4.

    Nice one! This song convinced me to buy a mandolin some years ago. I still can't find a lesson or a tab for that intro part steve earle plays at some live versions. (For example Farm Aid 1997) It would be awesome to see something about that. I love your channel. Keep it up!

    This is my second lesson on the mandolin in 2 days. I play both songs on guitar so it seems a little easier than I thought. Thing is, the small frets and my fat fingers getting in the way.
    Never played a mandolin before. I got this far this quick because YOU are an awesome teacher.
    BTW the A6 chord is toughy on this F model

  • @joeyankee1141

    Nice job. I know you are showing what he played on that version. For interest and less repetition on the main riff I do an alternating riff (not alternate) on what you are showing. I see this in a lot of pop music. Keeps it interesting and less repetitive. And also less repetitive. So on the D I go: 0-2 4 2 0 0-2 / D 4 4-5 5 5-4 0 0-2. Not for everyone, but some may like the change. And you can do either or both and it doesn’t matter if you screw up as long as you get back to the D on time to keep that drone going. And yes that’s the key to this song. So the 2002 version of D sounds way better. I bet this will sound great with a dropped D or DDD guitar to add to that drone. Thanks for sharing.

      Sounds cool! The thing with many of these songs is that they are open for embellishments like that. Steve Earle even plays this one differently from time to time.

    But besides that good video

  • @MarkTraphagen
    @MarkTraphagen 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Close but not exactly what Earle does. He keeps his middle finger on the second fret of The E string throughout the entire D chord and uses his ring and pinky to hit the 4th and 5th frets of the G string. That way he can strum all the strings throughout that sequence and maintain the F# on the E string. Watch his live videos and that's clearly what he does.

    • @RockPopMandolin
      @RockPopMandolin  4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Cool, thanks. But I've seen him do it differently on various TH-cam videos. Mostly, I've seen him avoid the E string. Check out this video around :46. He doesn't use the pinky at all. So I guess there are several ways to play it.
