I think one reason for a car chase to work, we really need to feel we are in the driver seat. A lot of car chase scenes misses showing anything inside the car and misses the mark.
This is why I thoroughly enjoyed the car scene in the new Mission Impossible film.
Love that scene. @@Kerwinnn
@@WhyteNoize859 Noize! hope you're well. I thought I over hyped the scene because I saw it in a theater, so its great to know others loved it 2. Thanks bud!
@@Kerwinnn Doing great, hope you are doing great. Always awesome to see you!!!!
Love that scene...bit long but loved it!
I love how the final car chase from the Blues Brothers remains a completely visceral experience up until the Bluesmobile just does a fckn somersault through the air lmao.
HAHAHAHAHHAHA! Exactly, when I first saw that I was like...wtf! Also watch the whole thing on YT, it ends with even more surreal-ness! Thanks for the comment!
I remember seeing that film as a kid, and laughing myself silly with the over the top crashes. Not just the sheer volume of cars, but the way many cars flew into the pile ups upside down and sideways.
And I thought you were going to mention my favourite bit, the way the blues mobile just fell apart at the end. Can't blame it after all that.
Remember, they're on a mission from god. They can play fast and lose with physics 😄
Honestly, I was loving the movie up until that moment it just fucking ruined it for me honestly, I was like damn this is a good car chase movie. What the fuck I was like. This is completely stupid.🤦🏽♂️💀
Well, it's a comedy film after all
A nice unmentioned detail of blues brothers is the garbage on the dash sliding around along with John, which actually shows how much weight they're throwing around and that they're actually driving it, not some stunt double on a wide shot.
Love this comment! Best so far on the video - weight adds to the realism! Stick around!
I thought he'd mention it in the video lol
I have to disagree about the surreal aspects brining Blues Brothers down. To me it's all about how the scene keeps escalating in its absurdity while keeping that practical filmmaking. I honestly think some of the Fast and Furious movies do this pretty well (5, 6, 7 in particular), though the newest entries have way too much unnecessary CGI.
Glad you included Speed Racer, as it's mostly CGI but it commits so much to that style it actually works. I think Ultraviolet's biggest problem is it just feels weightless, you don't feel the impacts and the speed, it's just a game cutscene. Speed Racer uses the effects to put you in the driver's seat.
Its a comedy. Its supposed to be funny. Absurd is funny.
Agreed with Speed Racer and with Ultraviolet! Blue Brothers - the issue for me is, I know it's a comedy and it CAN be surreal. But if I'm putting it up against The French Connection - as a pure car chase vs car chase, FC wins out based on that surrealism!
Not judging comedy scenes vs comedy scenes - because then it would win against French Connection :)
The second half of Death Proof is just a fantastic bit of film. The character introductions, the loooong, raw chase sequence, how the characters attitudes and motivations evolve along the way and the final conclusion. That chase sequence would look like it was right out of the 70s or 80s if not for all the more modern background vehicles they pass or crash into along the way.
Love this comment!
I have been saying for years that desthproof is the best car chase ever. It's just pure OTT awesomeness. Kurt Russel was brilliant.
I once referenced that scene when I was 13 when skateboarding.
I think another good chase is in the original French Taxi movie
The music, the skills on display, the cars, it's so good
Pretty poor story! Pretty great chases! Agreed. Thanks for the comment!
Loving this series mate! Blue Brothers and Mad Max set the standard when I was a kid, yet the original Fast & Furious still holds a special place in my heart because it feels like a 80s or 90s film with upgraded recording technology and more refinement. Perhaps a future episode could be about how unique vehicle driving in films can be - eg Speed or even the Soap Box Derby scene in The Little Rascals
Great comment! YEAH, there's so many films and so many chases! I may actually cover F&F, I've mentioned it twice now in both videos! It feels only right!
Most underrated would be the races in this obscure 80s movie called the Wraith. The races between that Dodge prototype and the other cars are just insane!
Ah, never heard of it! I need to check it out! Thanks for the comment!
The races are the best part of an otherwise pretty dull movie. But I did like how it presented the Wraith-car in some of the scenes, like it was some sort of space ship from another planet.
You've never seen Wraith?! It's worth watching, aside from the car chases.
Most kids don't know this but the 1st couple of fast and furious movies had some decent car chases.....Side note The Batman 2022 still proves that modern movie's still can have good looking and grounded car chases especially in action blockbusters
"dillion.....!" the acting couldn't be better unfortunately 😭
HAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHA! I love that part...I can't lie!
Bruh, I literally just saw Speed Racer this week and though for a sec you were gonna tear it to shreds 😅
I'll be honest.....I...
I mean the anime is pretty ridiculous, keep that in mind. ;)
Steven Spielberg's 'Duel' (1971) has GOT to be up there in the top three... It's basically a 90 minute car chase, with psychological undertones and the very definition of a climactic ending!
The problem with Duel I'd say is that as a 90 minute car chase, it does end up getting a bit boring, and could probably be a bit shorter.
@@stargazer2312 If one disregards the thick layers of subtext and the fantastic cinematography (especially towards the end) then yes, I guess it is a bit boring. 😊
I'd says better example of an entire movie being a car chase is Vanishing Point. 98 minutes of pure joy and excitement.
@@stargazer2312You must have the attention span of a fly if you think Duel is boring
The car chase from Jeepers Creepers is one of my favorite chase scenes in a horror movie. Mostly due to the fact that the truck chasing them down is so damn terrifying looking. Even the horn is creepy sounding.
I've not seen it, shall check that scene out! Thanks for the comment - stick around!
The best scene of the whole movie! quickly down hill after that...
Overall, just a great movie.
Right, so now I gotta watch the Blues Bro. Thank You!
TBH, I've not seen it - only that scene!
@@MarcusFlemmings You haven't seen it??!! If you ever do, I think you'll find that the car somersault on the bridge will be pretty low on the list of weird awesomeness in 'The Blues Brothers'. 😂
The finishing move on stuntman Mike is just so over the top!
HAHAHAH! l KINDA LOVE IT! I can't lie! Thanks for the comment :)
@@MarcusFlemmings This is Kenny btw.
@@TheNobleAthelstane Good Ol' Kennnnny!
William Friedkin followed up the French Connection car chase with the masterpiece in To Live and Die in L.A. (1985). It's a classic!
Yeah, I've heard some great things about this film! Thanks for the comment!
in my opinion, vintage car chases are the best car chases, because the sounds, the slow mo crashing is just so damn good
I love the chases from older movies, no major epic action music, most of the time its realistic, cars arent like inderstructebull like in some movies ive seen and i love the tire skreaching sounds
Let’s be honest, we can’t talk about good movie car chases without Last Crusade (yes I keep bringing it up I love the movie and it’s one of the best action movies to date and I’ll DIE ON THAT HILL)
A movie that wasn't mentioned here is the chase from To Live and Die in LA. It has stakes, change of scenery, great audio and a camerawork that is tight and well put together from the editing room.
holy crap. i did not know the landis story. great video as always! 👏
Big love!
3:24 aint no way dude, made me spit out my drink lmao
okay so outside of the opening chase from Baby Driver... Bourne Supremacy had the best plot driven chase there near the end... perfect motivation, music is driving everything fantastically and the state of the protagonist is shown through the blur of it all (as he's bleeding out and trying to also pathfind through an unknown city)
The french Movie Taxi 1998 By Luc Besson has amazing chase scene at the end. Also Taxi 2 has great chase scene too and all done practically
Good vid. While watching it came to mind that I’ve always thought the car chase in The Island was very good.
The final chase scene in Death Proof is a nod to the chase scene in Bullitt with the Dodge Charger and Vanishing Point with the white Dodge Challenger.
One of the best car chase I've ever seen is the final chase from the movie TAXI (2000) The editing, the music, all along with no CGI. It's truely a masterpiece
It's also interesting because the car chase is also reversed in the roles - the police are being chased by the bad guys.
Can’t wait to see your reaction on the car chase scene from the first Extraction.
I may cover it next time...it's a bit too unrealistic with the camera movements, so it's not one of my faves!
The opening bit highlighted how you can't have the same flavor of peril for too long. "Okay she's on the hood, and what?" Any decent action is a symphony.
Dude the chase seen from drive with the Chrysler and mustang was soooo cool
I need to check it out again, but the chases weren't the most memorable thing about the film for me! Thanks for the comment!
@@MarcusFlemmingsThe reason i like it is because there is no music but unfiltered car sounds.
And I really like it when big TH-camrs respond to comments , you have a sub from me
You gotta throw Baby Driver in some of these videos. Such a goated movie, the opening chase sequence is so sexy and the final fight is super engertic and chaotic. I highly recommend covering some of the scenes in these videos.
Check out the video coming up tomorrow :) car chases! You might just see it!
I think Death Proof is an absolute classic, real driving, real fast, just like they used to.
Can I suggest the car chase scene from The Raid 2 for a future video? It manages to bring the visceral impact of the fight scenes into the car chase, peppered with simultaneous fighting and injury, it also includes some very interesting camera work (there's a nice behind the scence video for 'that shot' in the chase) and is a different take to just watching the cars drive around a street.
One man is dying, his accomplice is being driven to his assumed demise and between the two of them it's a drive to survive (it also then sets up the 3 finale fight scence - all together roughly 45mins of action gold).
Missed oportunity to talk about M.I Fallout Paris' motorbike chase. well, wait to Vol. 3
Vol 3! Stay tuned!
Drive (2011) had some terrific chase scenes!
It only has 1 from my memory, mid-point in the film! Big love for the comment! Stick around!
@@MarcusFlemmings Oh no, there's the whole 9-10 minute opening scene. It's a slow burn with only bursts of chases, but it also an excellent exercise in cool pacing. And there's the great chase following the botched robbery about 1/3 of the way into the movie.
@@jazzdude921 Yeah, it's the opening credit sequence. It's okay! But not much of a chase, for me, anyway!
Sorry but the best car chases has, without a shadow of a doubt, the 1998 movie "Ronin". Not because they are the biggest, craziest, most exploding over-the-top stuff, but because they are not. They are so realistic, immersive, real and grounded, the camera, the very distict sounds of the engines, the feel of real threat and urgency.
I can't disagree I featured it on a snippet from Vol 1 of this series!
Ah was looking for this comment. I bought the DVD years ago just for that scene lol
And the movie's pretty good too...
@@praeothmint2273 Agreed!
If I remember correctly, the blues brothers chase featured - what was at the time - the most car crashes ever committed to film.
And just to add a suggestion for future content. Talk of killer cars, like death proof. Reminded me of the movie, The Car. It does have its visceral moments.
For me it'll always be the second Bourne movie. That chase is perfect.
In Russia?
The blues brothers was sick
I'd love to see you compare Gone in 60 Seconds (1974) to the (2000) version. Mainly by the car chases, but also as movies. I think they both hold a nugget of gold.
I don't understand the hate for the Cage remake. It's one of my favourite movies.
@@stargazer2312 I think they are both B movies, which are lovable in a way that might not be so mainstream
@@stargazer2312As a remame of a car chase film, having only a singular chase lasting ~10 minutes was a pretty big let down. Been meaning to watch it again sometime with more of an open mind (like forgeting it's a remake) to see if that improves my opinion.
I don't think Michael Bey is a great director, but I've always enjoyed his car chases.
I actually disagree... he is a great action director! His problem is narrative storytelling and his humour is all over the place! Thanks for the comment!
@@MarcusFlemmings i also disagree since most of his films have good story and humour is ok
@hx20games77 That absolutely isn't true at all! His major problem - like Zack Sydner is how they handle their material and their lack of good humour. Both are excellent technical directors.
Everyone is allowed to have their own opinion, Marcus, no matter how stupid
@@theshowmaster3836 😅😅
The opening chase of the original Mad Max would also be great for a video like this. And maybe non live-action sequences? Stunts that are animated but are made to look real?
I just randomly found this channel and video and I want to see the french movie Taxi included in a potential part 3 because it's a part of my childhood
Taxi is a fun movie! It's basically Fast and Furious, BEFORE Fast and Furious!
I have never watched Bullet [sic?] but I have heard the McQueen car chase is pretty good. To me, what I've seen personally, Blues Brothers (the original 80s version) still ranks up there on Top 5, perhaps even Top 1. I know it's difficult because it's a long movie and there are multiple scenes, but Blues Brothers just has every single version of one you could imagine. I love when they crash through the government building (near the end). According to IMDB, they did thousands of accidental dollars of damage when they ran over the floor and a lot of it had to be replaced.
Bullitt is the best because it's realistic, the location, two classic cars, the roaring V8's and also you can see Steve McQueen doing a lot of the actual driving.
Ronin had some of the best chase scenes for it's time.
Agreed! It's shown a bit on vol 1 of the series!
Dude, Death Proof is so good. I still think it's my favorite Tarantino movie
In part 3, should include the chase scene from Driven (2001)
Now that’s a bad movie!
Talk about the Taxi movies.
Really great chase scenes aswell
Only seen Taxi 1, it's fun!
@@MarcusFlemmings its a great movie.
The second one its really good aswell
I think in the next one, if you make another comparison of good and bad chases, I think you should go over the chase in 2007’s Transformers with the Camaro and the Mustang cop car
Bullitt (to me at least) will remain as the best car chase
Always will be
Lol now you're gonna have to do a part 3 and include Taxi 2004 I promise it's car chases were really great
I've seen it :) some great chases! Thanks for the comment - stick around!
2 fast 2 furious chase is the best in the whole franchise
I do think Fast 5 might just beat it! Thanks for the comment!
Death proof and fast n furious (?) was the first movie that cane to mind when i read the title
I still say the chase scene from Tokyo Drift where the one character -(spoilers)- is the best one in the franchise.
Ever seen C'efait un Rendezvous? Its a 1976 short experimental film where the Director drives a Mercedes at speeds upwards of 80mph through the heart of Paris at dawn. The whole thing is shot P.O.V. in one take and just about every traffic law in France is broken!
Wasn't it a Ferrari?
I think the camera was mounted on a Mercedes and the sound was taken from a Ferrari - or maybe it was the other way around.
I love the original gone in 60 seconds
I need to watch it! Thanks for the comment - stick around!
Although the rest of the film is kinda good (IMO), the unicycle chase in Lockout with Guy Pearce is an abomination I would love to erase from memory.
I think the Pariz chase in taxi 2 is also worth looking in
I've only seen part 1! Shall check it out! Thanks for the comment!
If you do a part 3 for this series, I would like to nominate the original 1974 version of "Gone in 60 Seconds". The main car chase is over 40 minutes long, and runs the gamut of visceral, frantic, and at times desperate action that makes a memorable car chase. The acting and story is a bit basic as it was a pet project of the director's (who before was a junkyard owner who was a film enthusiast), but oh that car chase.
Death Proof was Tarantino's best film until Inglorious Basterds, hands down.
You missed the chance to show the hyper awesome drift dodge from Baby Driver's opening scene.
I'm glad you showcased more great practical chases than Fury Road, since we all know that entire movie is the best car chase ever, it is no longer even in the conversation.
Well, even Stahelski and Leitch have 2nd Unit Directors. The difference is, they plan the action more to fit their style.
On big productions a 2nd unit might shoot 60-80 days while main unit has about 100 days. So it would be hugely expensive not to utilize those units.
Love this!
you should talk about the original Gone in 60 seconds from 1973
the first time i saw speed racer i didnt like it much. then i saw it a few years later and thought it was great.
Hi @marcus flemmings. What do you think of the main car chase in tokyo drift? I really enjoyed that chase, felt like the stakes were high
Fast and Furious?
@@MarcusFlemmings yes. The main chase with Han and Sean vs DK. I love the ending scene where they had to drive through the crowd. I think they actually had to shoot the scenes illegally
I know it's been talked about so many times before, but I would love to hear your take on the Nightrider chase from the beginning of Mad Max.
Which one? Mad Max 1?
@@MarcusFlemmings Yeah, I personally consider it to be THE film car chase (although I am sorta biased) and I'd love to see it put through a more impartial analysis.
blues brothers is a fun movie in general :)
The whole of part 3 should be on Bullitt
It was not clear if Neil Breen's scene is good or bad, it needs a deep analysis 🤔
Pahahaa! I'll see if I can dedicate some time and thinking to his masterwork!
Ultraviolet and Speed Racer were not released in the same year. Ultraviolet was released in 2006 and Speed Racer in 2008.
Dukes Of Hazard
For stunts?
@@MarcusFlemmings Correct
Ronin?
Never seen Death Proof, did you like the film overall? Should you watch along with Planet Terror or it doesn’t really matter?
Planet Terror definitely has a stronger story, yet I still enjoy Death Proof because it has Quentin Tarantino's flair and the car action is brilliant - Zoë Bell is truly crazy!
As a homage to B-movies, Both are fun, and very independent of one another. They are two standalone movies. Planet Terror is camp fun. Death Proof can get a bit.. Dull. Personally, any time I rewatch it, I skip the first half completely, and start with the second half - the final chase sequence is one of my all-time favorites.
Death Proof is a spot-on and very intentional homage to a lot of low budget movies from the 70s. But low-budget meant, for example, that there were lengthy scenes of people talking and doing nothing, because that's inexpensive to film. Action setpieces are expensive, so there's only two of them. To a modern audience, Death Proof really seems slow and talky. And, again, that was exactly the goal. But audiences didn't love it.
Planet Terror understands the assignment better than Death Proof! I prefer Planet Terror for what the entire double bill is trying to do. But I do love the 'hang out' feel of Death Proof!
Yeah, Planet Terror more B movie than Death Proof...it's better! In that aspect!
I NEED you to do the 2014 Need For Speed movie!
Wasn't a big fan of the film...completely unmemorable - but shall check it out again :) thanks for the comment!
You often ask how people are and currently, I'm about a 5 but got as low as 3 this morning. Developed a bit of a migraine which was beginning to subside when I found my cat had had an accident so I had to clean that up. I said before that these short breakdowns and comparisons are really fascinating. It was more than just more example, you presented a different set of issues. Tomorrow night I will be going to see the Godfather at the cinema, I've only see the movie once and that was probably about 15 years ago on TV.
Well firstly, sorry to hear about those issues! I'm sure you'll get through them - don't despair :) and secondly, I'm jealous you're seeing The Godfather at the cinema...I've not seen it at a cinema yet. Let me know how it goes! And thirdly, thanks for the comment and the viewing!!
@@MarcusFlemmings It's no biggy, I don't often get migraines and I love my cat. I often say that if we didn't have bad days we wouldn't recognise the good ones. Interaction is so important for content creators, not just for the algorithm but for you to know that what you're doing works and is appreciated. Even genuine criticism can be constructive.
I've had some great interactions with people who I disagree with, they can actually explain why they feel like they do. I've also had encountered some people wo say, it's a crap movie, it's an idiotic scene, it's a badly written character. You don't need to be uber-articulate or be able to write an essay... but just give some sense of why they feel this way. Again, great channel and even though I'm not typically a livestream guy I've enjoyed the couple I've dropped into.
to be fair, the fast and furious franchise do have family so that may excuse the ridiculousness of their chases

I really dislike the chase scene in The Rock. Frenzy editing, no sense of geography or rhythm, constant dialogue.

What's your opinion about the chases on the first 3 Mad Max films?
They are great, for their time! I'm not a big fan of the films...but nice car chases! Thanks for the comment as well!
I'll be honest, I hated the chase scene in The Batman mostly because with all the things it went through, The Penguin's Maserati should have had way more damage than it did. And if it did and I just missed it, that movie was so dark you couldn't see a thing regardless.
Or maybe I'm just biased because I thought that movie sucked in general
Hhahhhaa! The last thing seems more accurate!

What did you think of the bank vault car chase seen in Fast 5? I thought it was one of the best car chases ever done. I feel like they’ve been trying to top it ever since and it’s one of reasons the franchise has become so mediocre. They pulled off something fantastical once. Now, they’re locked into doing it again at the expense of every other quality that would make that kind of film enjoyable. Would love to hear your thoughts on it.
