    Great video! Thanks for the info. Another place you can look is Lowes & Home Depot. They have shorter pieces of wood called runners, spacers, or breakers. They are the boards they use in between their stacks of lumber. We stop by every couple of weeks to pick up and generally get a pallet of them for $1-15. Sometimes they just give them to us. My daughter and I are using them to make some household furniture like a two person desk, microwave stand, kitchen island, and now we are getting ready to do a 3/4 living room wall entertainment center. So many more projects ahead.

      Oh interesting that is a super good tip! I do know they have sort of a scratch and dent section in the lumber area (but instead of scratches and dents it's usually bowed or otherwise broken) and there are some good bargains in there if you need shorter cuts where those bends and breaks don't matter to you! Great suggestion thank you!

    You are NOT cheap, you are frugal! Of course my dad used to say that I knew how to pinch a penny till it screamed! Thanks, Dad! Great video, thank you!
    Off to watch how to put together the window greenhouse! Recently scored 90 old, single paned windows in great shape from an antique shop that decided not to carry old structural pieces any longer.
    Watched the price dwindle on their sign for 6 mos till it said 'free, you haul'! I saw fireworks, heard trumpets, and was back with a pickup in 10 minutes!
    They've all been stripped, painted, and resealed (if needed). Have made 10 cold frames, have 80 left, and was looking for a greenhouse video! So glad I found your channel! Your my kind of folks!

    You raise a lot of good points about wood.

    John your lucky to have such a close mill, nothing around where I am. I bought most of what I need for my upcoming custom ultimate chicken coop last spring thinking I was gonna build right away. Most of it is expensive pt though. Everything has gone up but wood more so. We’re under a stay at home order up here in Ontario now 😜 See ya on the next one, Chad.

      Yes everything always is going up in prices but I haven't seen anything like the lumber price change. I am hoping with a new administration import taxes against canada will be removed and lumber prices can self correct. (not to talk politics, just hoping that lumber prices will come down, we have things to build!!)

    The only saw mill near us shut down years ago, thankfully we have a friend who can get us some free lumber from new construction sites, it's insane what they throw away😅 thanks for another entertaining and informative video. Always look forward to y'all shenanigans😂

    • @OldReddingFarm

      Oh my gosh yes construction site dumpsters are literal gold mines!!!! It can be tricky to get permission but when it works, IT WORKS! great suggestion !

  • @MountainRoots

    Hahaha, the "free montage" 🤣 ...that's a nice arrangement you've got with that local sawyer. When we ran a sawmill business the jacket lumber/slabs were always a challenge to move...we tried selling bundles but a lot of times it just sat. Those second cuts can hold quite a few decent grade 1x2s, 1x3s, etc., 🤙 -Josh

    • @OldReddingFarm
      @OldReddingFarm  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah that is a good suggestion to cut down the top cuts into more uniform bits as well. The free montage we like too :) nothing wrong with trying to do things on the free/cheap. :)

      @OldReddingFarm  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      hidden spring that is so interesting I have been thinking that the reason our lumber prices had skyrocketed was due to the current import taxes we have on Canada.. so interesting to hear its so expensive there as well! Wonder what that is all about? I thought you guys were producing the majority of it for us

    • @HiddenSpringFarm
      @HiddenSpringFarm 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Old Redding Farm we do produce most of it but I guess COVID is an excuse to raise prices... not just wood either but wood seems to have gone up 20%...crazy!!!

    • @OldReddingFarm
      @OldReddingFarm  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh thank you so much! We do struggle with keeping things looking neat and orderly. That playscape that we picked up came with several swings which we set outside each of the existing chicken coops planning to hang them in the runs and that was about a month ago, and there they still sit! People coming to visit them might notice and think its a mess but... whatever! grab a drill and hang them for us if you don't like it! Hah! Glad it doesn't all show in video
