I think it’s also interesting that when you play the game in Jimmy’s perspective, Anya is a lot harder to find. When you do find her, she’s often with another crew member, never letting herself be alone in a room if Jimmy’s nearby. Meanwhile in the Curly flashbacks, she’s sitting comfortably in the lounge or the medical bay alone with Curly, not as meek as when Jimmy talks to her.

God damnit, I agree, but Jimmy is such a incredible and fascinating portrayal of a selfish asshole. He's a hypocrite, he's incompetent, he's whiny, his feelings are all over the place. He seems to both resent Curly and almost religiously admire him. Actually I'm willing to assume that almost all of his actions in the story are motivated by his goal to be like Curly and to impress him. I think's possible that he SA'd Anya just to get back at her for disclosing his super embarrassing fetish to Curly. And even after putting the poor man through physical and psychological hell and torture, Jimmy's goal was to keep Curly alive at all costs, even of that means prolonging his agony. And in Jimmy's mind he's doing what's best for Curly, he doesn't see the cruelty behind it. Obviously he's predisposed with what Curly means to him, not what Curly means to Curly.
Jimmy's a menace, but he's so realistic. I just love to psychoanalyze characters who can rationalize and boil actual crimes they committed down to their personality flaws. How do you get from "I crashed a ship because the person I assaulted got pregnant" to "I just wanted to make my captain proud"? I don't know, but somehow the way Jimmy is written manages that seamlessly.

    I love how Swansea works as a sort of red herring, the game really tries to make us untrusting of him. I mean, an angry drunk with an axe? Oh he's definitely the threat! But no. His entire point is he KNOWS he's not "good" person, but he does what he can to be an actually GOOD person. He saves a cryopod to save one member (probably Daisuke), he keeps the axe away from others because he doesn't trust them with it (which is totally correct, somehow the drunk is the safest option to have an axe), and the only time he does something to hurt soneone is putting Daisuke down because he doesn't want him to suffer.       Anya and Curly are the characters I fixate on the most, though I also really like Daisuke and Swansea, and I think they did a fantastic job of portraying Jimmy as an actual person who is a monster because of what he does, not what he’s born as - but I just think a lot more about the first two. Please forgive my rambling but I’ve been wanting to rant and rave about them for at least 24 hours and I really like this video a lot ;;
I’d have loved to have sections of the game from a post-crash Curly’s perspective, because I fully agree, each time Curly and Jim interacted after the crash had an air of miserable clarity and hopelessness. (It’s perfect as is of course, post-burn Curly would know and think too much to keep Jimmy’s unreliable narration, it’d definitely weaken the well-crafted, fractured timeline) He didn’t do anything(*anything*) to help Anya when he (SHOULD HAVE) was still Captain Curly, and now he’s physically incapable of even uttering one of those pep talks he was always so eager to give, even to those who didn’t deserve it. Despite Jimmy’s actions being the root of all of this, his selfishness led to the two he betrayed the most “taking responsibility” - Anya ‘taking care of it’ by removing all evidence of his crime (self-termination), and Curly remaining to watch everything, everyone he loved be torn to shreds at the hands of his friend, as the sole survivor and sole suspect to the entire tragedy.
He can only laugh when he sees Jimmy with the gun, Anya was right after all.
The creators of the game did a fantastic job of writing such compelling, heartbreaking, and realistic characters. The “promising young man”, the ‘clueless’ friend, the silent sufferer. The struggle of accepting how monstrous a loved one can be, of accepting how horrific an experience is, of accepting how blind everyone else is - including oneself. And now, at the mercy of someone so vile and unable to comfort someone so betrayed, his jaw is forced open, and it’s time to take his medicine.
      He hopes this hurts.

He could have easily held Jimmy somewhere until they reached civilization with the help of the other 2 men on board. Maybe not Daisuke so much but assuming curly is roughly the same build as Jimmy, Swan and Curly could have put arrested Jimmy or even forced into a cyropod had they had the time.

@@plushehchan8643"I hope this hurts" NOW IT MAKES SENSE!!! THANK YOU!! This game has also been on my mind for more than a day and I kept thinking of how Curly, while not guilty himself did try to "fix it" for Jimmy - who assaulted his colleague?! I kept thinking of that line, because Jimmy wouldn't want things to hurt. He can't accept pain or responsibility or guilt, always making it someone else's fault or problem or saying he'll fix everything, while he burns everything down even more. But Curly... Maybe it's Curlys regret as well? Had he taken disciplinary action, and, let's say, locked Jimmy in a cryopod to keep him from Anya, this entire nightmare would never have happened. But instead he let the guy who just admitted to assault, walk away resolutely, unsupervised... Sorry, my turn to ramble, I am just so happy to get to discuss this game.

18:15 curly goes on to joke "thanks, now I'll always be looking for it" referring to the dead pixel. this could either be a nod to the player replaying the game, you'll be looking for the "dead pixel" (signs of the abuse, and jimmy being the bad guy all along). additionally it could be about the burden of knowledge. curly is used to looking at the big picture, he believed that jimmy was alright and didn't bother to look closer. being given information about jimmy's flaws, and his crimes, maybe he would react with the same levity: "cheers, this is ruined for me now." he doesn't want to see the dead pixel.

I only picked up on it in the first go because I've been SA'd by a man like Jimmy (I'm a guy, for context as to why I am responding to the comment). Her fear of him and having to be around him because she worked with him (which was my situation as well) meant she had to be somewhat nice to him, even after the crash, in order to protect herself and maybe as a defense mechanism. She and Curly were my favorite characters and Curly being someone she was safe with strengthened that. I think everyone but Jimmy deserved to live and while Curly fucked up in trusting Jimmy, I do understand his want to believe in the good in people since even now I still have that as well. We also see that in Anya in the fact that she did not seem to believe that Curly was evil even when she was led to think he had caused the crash. Honestly the whole cast is written so fantastically and if you're not paying close enough attention, I could see some people sympathizing with Jimmy at the end since he "saved" Curly and showed what some might mistake for remorse... Only then you just have to look back and see that when Anya wa locked in the room, Jimmy never expressed concern for her and only Curly. He only brings up saving Anya to convince Daisuke to help him.

    • @MelancholyRequiem
      @MelancholyRequiem 19 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

To be fair, it's extremely unfair to assume men didn't pick up on the subtext just because they won't mention it. TH-cam makes it hard for creators to know how they can talk about sensitive things without demonitization, so it's easier to avoid it. Men get shot down A LOT, very often by women, for talking about such subjects because they are accused of having dirty minds that were able to pick up on that because they are capable also doing that. If a man related at all to Jimmy, why would he admit to picking up on the subtext but also still finding him relatable? Isn't that quite the meta discussion surrounding a game with themes about taking responsibility? It's much easier to just pretend they don't see it than have to tread carefully in very unsafe social waters, especially when that huge hot-button issue wasn't the main thing they wanted to talk about anyway. We're in a post-GamerGate world and I'm not going to get mad at anyone for either having such awesome lives that they don't pick up on SA cues since they have no experience or for just not wanting to talk about it.

Someone I saw saying on another video is that... Jim really didn't have any flashbacks of Anya. Most likely didn't even see her as human.

  • @SpecialInterestShow
    @SpecialInterestShow 4 วันที่ผ่านมา +399

"I have to believe that our worst moments don't make us monsters"
Hits so fuckin different once you know what Jim did to Anya
She literally has to make herself believe that Jim isn't a monster, because if she doesn't... The implications would destroy her.
    Implications/what she'd have to accept:
    - Jim is a monster who r'd her.
    - Jim not only r'd her, but then crashed the ship.
    - Crashing the ship came right after she had vented to Curly. Of course, it's not her or Curly's fault what Jim did, but guilt isn't always rational. Seeing Curly, the one man she had trusted, in such a horrific state... There's no way she wouldn't be wracked with guilt, blaming herself for what happened. _If I only had kept my mouth shut, and not told Curly that it had been forced on me, this wouldn't have happened_ , is what she would think.
    - At the same time, I think she'd be mad that Curly had refused to give her the gun because now look at what happened!!
    - If Jim is a monster, then that means he shouldn't be around the baby when it's born. But she wouldn't have a choice in the matter, since Jim is captain...
    - Jim, a r'pist, is the leader of this ship now.
    - She is the only woman on a ship surrounded by 3 able-bodied men who may be into women, one of whom has already forced himself on her at least once before the crash.
    - Food will eventually run out, and when it does, the mouthwash will be all that's left.
    - If the mouthwash ends up being all that's left, that's probably not at all enough for the baby, not to mention the possible fetal alcohol syndrome that could result from consuming all of that alcohol in the mouthwash.
    - If the food runs out and the mouthwash is all that's left, that means those 3 men including her r'pist will end up perpetually drunk from the mouthwash. With her, again, being the only woman around.
    - By the time she has the baby, there may not be any food left for it. Sure, she can breastfeed for a while, but if all she has to consume for sustenance is alcohol mouthwash... That surely can't make for healthy breastmilk for a baby? So the baby likely wouldn't live long...
    - Even if she wanted an abortion, how could it be done? I doubt they have the proper equipment there, and she probably doesn't know if the guys are pro life or pro choice or what. What if they wouldn't even try to help figure out how to give her one?
I think at some point she may have come to these realizations, and as a result she felt her only option was an overdose...
Oh, and theory: Anya was never after the gun. She only led Jim to believe that so that he would have to walk away to find the code, and therefore she'd have time for the overdose to kick in.
I think she also did intend to kill Curly, but she couldn't bear having to shove pills down his throat to do so.
Bonus theory: she can't handle shoving the pills down Curly's throat for one simple, sad reason: it reminds her of the r'pe. Either the cries of Curly as she tries to do it, or a more literal interpretation that Jim, well... put his you-know-what in her mouth during the assault... or both. Either way, having to give Curly the meds triggers her so deeply that she couldn't bear to shove the pills down his throat to overdose him.

This line is something that really makes me reflect on Curlys role in all of this. You hear it from Anya. You hear it from Jimmy. They both got it from Curly. Anya tells it to herself so she can still interact with Jimmy at work. Jimmy tells it to himself so he can live with what he did. Curly tells it to himself so he can maintain his friendships with a rapist. It was his way of smoothing the waves and basically downplay the SA to hold the crew together. It's unfortunately a very plausible way of things going down.

I took Curly, as someone who didn't understand the fact that she was assaulted. I feel as if he just thought Jimmy would be a deadbeat father, and wanted to help correct that. I cannot remember the exact line but it struck me because jimmy says that curly will always remember that phrase. (I think it was the take responsibility or something).. but it hit so much harder when you know curly is the only survivor, by the time he is in the cryopod he knows that he messed up and that he will live with the responsibility of not really helping Anya after the assualt, the good crew members dying, and if he gets rescued he will always be horribly disfigured and probably unable to tell the story of what happened.

I find people's way of displaying the lack of humanity in humanity itself to be chilling. In a game like this where the danger could be in space itself, or a cosmic being, or even technology failing, a human being's selfishness is what leads to the demise of this crew. The one thing they could turn to for help or comfort was each other, and that is exactly what ended up being their enemy.

This is exactly why I love the movie The Shining over King's own interpretation of the story. The movie seems to make it more ambiguous if there is even anything actually supernatural, or if it was all human isolation and insanity. King didn't like the movie for this reason, he had written the shining about something supernatural. But to me, humanity can be far scarier than anything humanity tries to invent to be scary. I also thing that is a big inspiration for the game, Anya looking so much like Shelley Duvall seems to me like a clear nod to that

    • @ScoutMasterRose
      @ScoutMasterRose 2 วันที่ผ่านมา +5

@@DocterCoconut I definitely like the book, but I also love the movie more. If Anya is a nod to Shelley Duvall, that's awesome; she was a great actress. Another great example of whether the threat could be human or supernatural (or both) is The Lighthouse by Robert Eggers. When ambiguity is done well, it can really work to make a story more disturbing.
For me, what makes it so scary to see that the threat is human is that it gets rid of the separation between the audience and the danger. You can't hide behind the 'this isn't real, so it will never happen' excuse.

I'm thinking about the name of the game, mouthwashing. Might be far-fetched, but it's making me think of the phrase "washing one's hands of something" as refusing to partake in certain actions or take responsibility for one's actions. Jimmy is the one doing mouthwashing here, he's washing his mouth of the space ship crash and possibly even the suffering he's caused Anya, he's refusing to own up and tell others about his deeds.
And on the topic of Anya, her being pregnant during the mouthwash discovery explains why she isn't enthused about drinking it. Mouthwash contains alcohol, famously bad for babies.

Great analysis! This game has stuck with me since I watched a playthrough of it a few days ago. I never expected to get so attached to the characters, especially Anya. This game has some of the best writing I've seen in any media in a long time.
As a woman, the twist of this game hit me really hard. At the very beginning of the game, I remember feeling sad for Anya because she was the only female on board. If I was in her shoes I would have felt very uncomfortable, especially for such a long voyage. It's not that all men are evil and will hurt you: it's that there's always the possibility they could. It's much more likely that someone will get assaulted by someone they know rather than a stranger. Someone you once liked and trusted could turn on you at a moments notice and destroy your life. It's just something we are forced to live with every day, but we put it in the back of our minds so we can continue on as normal. I dismissed my initial feeling of sadness for Anya as me being overly harsh and I didn't expect the game to go that direction. But it did. And by the end I felt sick to my stomach.
Being harassed at work and having to toughen up and deal with it is something that happens to people every day. It's not always women, but a lot of the time it is. Not only was this happening to Anya, but she was forced to live constantly around her harasser for months and months. She was forced to be in rooms alone with him as he made gross jokes. She had 4 other people she could talk to at all and one of them was hurting her. Even in her own bed she wasn't safe from him, as the company failed care enough to put locks on the doors. There was nowhere she could go to get away from him. That's a fucking nightmare.
Even after she told Curly about the assault and pregnancy it seemed like he was more willing to give his friend the benefit of the doubt than get him in trouble. After all, it would reflect poorly on him since he probably got Jimmy that job, and that he let his bad behavior continue for so long on his ship to the point someone got raped. I'm sure he was trying to look on the bright side and thought he could somehow fix everything. But Jimmy and Curly are so blinded by the prospect of "taking responsibility" that they don't stop to think about how Anya feels. She will never be the same again, even if everyone is held accountable. Her mental scars are just as permanent as Curly's burns.
For a game set on a spaceship and full of cosmic horror, way too much of it was very familiar. I don't know if I've seen this topic handled with so much nuance and care in a game before, but it's amazing. Huge props to the devs.

This is probably one of the most upsetting horror games I’ve ever seen. In the end, Jimmy took the easy way out like a total coward he was. The crew would’ve been safe if they replaced Jimmy with a bear. Horror games where the scares come from humans being humans, or lack thereof are the best.

(“If anyone ever finds us, I’ll still be playing the villain”)
Like not once, after the crash, have we ever seen actual Curly’s inner thoughts or dialogues (ofc he cant talk) and most of “his” dialogues with Jimmy are just from Jimmy’s imaginations

Although I hate how some seems to miss that Anya was assaulted, I do really appreciate how the devs made a game about assault where the situation isn't exploited for horror or shock in a explicit scene. Anya as a character gets treated with respect from the Devs in a way she doesn't from Curly or Jimmy, by being taken seriously and her pain is discussed and shown but never leered over. I also can't helpt but notice how her design reminds me so much of the female lead from the Shining, where the actrese famoulsy got bullied by Kubrick on set. Anya at least gets the grace of her pain and story being shown and told, but the graphic torment is that of Curly, her boss and maybe friend who did nothing to protect her.

Mouthwashing: You can (not) take responsibility 2.0
This story is very tragic and messed up. Jimmy is an absolute monster, and it's really scary because people like him do exist. What he did to Anya was disgusting. He used his friendship with Curly to downplay what had happened just to save his own skin, then once the jig was up decided to crash the ship and blamed it all on Curly. Also, during the part where they're trying to get into the medical room, notice that he coerces Daisuke into going into the vent first which led to him getting mortally wounded. Everything bad that happens is because of Jimmy.

I’ve noticed in the comments a certain misconception about abuse/trauma situations that has popped up a couple times in the comment section and figured I would give my two cents as a survivor myself. (No offense to anyone who has mentioned this, I would consider it rather fortunate if you cannot relate to Anya the way I can.)
Many people have questioned why Anya would be somewhat “cooperative” and “nice” with Jimmy during the game and have suggested that this is evidence that they had to be in some kind of romantic relationship or that it would make more sense overall if that were the case. But the true nuance at play there is far more simple yet still incredibly horrifying. Anya was not in a situation where it was safe to confront her attacker, and frankly, she was in the difficult situation where her coworkers did sympathize with her plight to some extent, but either didn’t understand the full severity of Jimmy’s behavior, or at worst were unwilling to hold him fully accountable due to the difficult survival situation they were all in.
And worse still, it’s clear from how Curly handled the pony comment situation that this lack of accountability for Jimmy making unwanted advances towards Anya was something of a pattern, yet not taken nearly as seriously as it should have been. This told Anya that she had no choice but to play “nice” with the man that hurt her so irrevocably for the sake of her own survival. That’s not residual romantic feelings or the sign of a former relationship, it’s a critique on how corporate culture has and continues to silence victims of workplace sexual harassment and abuse, and how even well intentioned people like Curly can unwittingly enable or defend an abuser simply because they feel they know them, not realizing that the most dangerous attackers are the ones that know how to behave in front of others, and will present themselves very differently to their friends and acquaintances, regardless of how depraved they might be behind closed doors.

It may have been a mistake on the dev's part, but there is a strange timeline inconsistency in Jimmy's internal narrative. Jimmy says Anya locks herself in medbay 4 months after the crash while later, when he's pushing Daisuke to go into the vent, the narration says it's 2 or 3 months. I'm thinking this inconsistency is intentional. And what Jimmy describes as months might actually be days or weeks at most.

It's very weird to say that about someone like Jimmy, but I think he's a compelling villain. And I mean a true, real life villain, not a Disney one. And he wouldn't be nearly as compelling if we didn't play half the game from his perspective. He's such a scumbag, such a pathetic excuse of a human being, such a worm. His selfishness is so real but it's so complex you can't help but wonder how could anyone be so delusional to rationalize their actions the the way he did. You understand that Jimmy's a human, an actual person, not a mustache-twirling evildoer. But that's also what makes him so disgusting, because you know that people like him exist.

i genuinely thought that the cryopod was meant for Anya but for it to be meant for Daisuke is also a nice touch. It did show that, despite his disgruntlement, Swansea did care for him a lot. Maybe he saw in Daisuke a little bit of himself? Maybe a part of him that could have been or was once before that moment? It's interesting seeing Mouthwashing that, even the title itself, has some other meaning in it.
Mouthwash is used to cleanse yourself off bad bacteria infecting your gums, teeth and tongue. Teeth could be stand in for: power, weapon, advantage and/or predator/y. Teeth get dirty when you eat or drink something that, over time, could ruin it. Therefore, mouthwash is used to protect and get rid of those factors that might ruin your teeth. Leaving a pleasant, light and clean feeling left behind.
Completely getting rid of all that nasty feeling of filth. The problem in this is that Jimmy is incapable of cleansing himself because there is nothing to cleanse when he's rotten all the way down to the root. Making it impossible to achieve that pleasant clan feeling.

“Take responsibility” can be seen as Jimmy being delusional and imagining Curly chastising him, it could be Curly feeling guilty for himself, or it could play into Jimmy’s delusion on how he thinks he’s being responsible as a captain. Whatever it is, the motif of “taking responsibility” could be applied to what Jimmy did to Anya.

@@VirtualResidence yeah and everyone is also tired of the AAA market due to many factors: the well-known widespread mistreatment of workers; the threat of AI taking over the jobs; massive layoffs every time you turn around; and then there's the fact that you need such a beefy expensive computer to play _most_ modern AAA; and then the sheer price itself.
Like, you want me to pay $70 for a game when you mistreated your employees on crunch time the entire time and you also require me to have some $3,000 worth of computer specs to even play it in decent quality? No thanks. I've had just as much if not more fun on itchio
Hot/possibly-lukewarm take: Death Stranding for example sucked as a game and if you name any popular itchio game it's probably leagues better, cheaper, takes less beefy a computer, and has a cooler story than DS
(as good as the Death Stranding graphics are, the game is a glorified walking simulator with bits of a movie mixed in.)
Also, yakuza like a dragon can't play on my PC, but a 400-mod Minecraft modpack can. Minecraft, a game that I haven't spent a cent on in 14 years. Still alive and getting a ton of enjoyment because of the cool people coding free mods
Let's see, lemme rec you some indie horror games I've really enjoyed:
      - No Delivery by Oates on itchio: you play as a worker (your job is randomized each run) doing various things around a restaraunt/arcade. But there's creepy shit going on the deeper you delve in. Puzzles to solve, mysteries to solve, all in a backdrop of horror happening both around and in front of you. Some slapstick, some genuinely creepy and mysterious. Also, its use of the rpgmaker fight system was so cool, utilizing it in ways I didn't even know you could get rpgmaker to do in the first place! I can't recommend this enough, it's got tons of content to explore.
      - We Know The Devil on steam: it's a very cool horror vn (with choices) that I'm not even sure how to describe. Better for you to experience yourself. It's somewhat short, but it's just as long as it needs to be. I have only played this title by the devs, but their other stuff looks very good as well.
      - Children of the Devil by Stanwixbuster on itchio: oh. Oh my god. Where do I even begin? The art style, the aesthetic, the story, the characters, God, it's all so weird but so amazing. It really deserves more love. I don't even know how to describe its aesthetic but it's one I've never seen before and haven't seen since. If you check it out I'd love to hear if you liked it or if you make a vid!

This was great video about a fantastic game but I feel like perspective changes what are the "surprise elements". As a woman, being introduced to the crew and realizing Anya was the only woman in the ship already brought me discomfort, it was not where I thought the game would go but -as she says on her conversation with curly about the dead pixel- it was already on the back of my mind the entire time, so the confirmation that it did happen was not a shock but a sad punch to the gut. Also, i agree with your take that she spend the entire game asking for help and it going unnotice but I also take her comment as her knowing all along she could be in danger due to being the only woman on the ship. She has to have that information on the back of her mind to stay alert while continuing her duties, then after it happens, the event just keeps repeating on and on on her mind, and now more than ever she knows the danger she once just thought of as a possibility became reality and she will have to re-live it everyday, 1 because she's stuck in the ship for many more months, 2 because it could happen again, 3 because there is a physical reminder of what happend inside of her. So I take it as her trying to push the memories to the back of her mind so she can carry on for the rest of the cruise.

the worst part about this is bc theyre in space, theres literally nothing that can be done about jimmy. i believe thats what the conversation with swansea was, when anya said "yes im understand completely", i think it was in response to something along the lines of "that guy is a piece of shit but we're not really in a position to do anything about him, im so sorry". even if the crash never happened, theyre in the middle of space with the better part of a year left to go, not even sure if that includes the return trip. even if she told everyone, what can they do? the only options are murder or just. living with it. at best they could shun him and that probably would have ended with him going postal on them in a different way. doubt the company would do anything if she told them, might even reprimand her for "putting herself in that position" or something else sinister and awful

I choose to believe that Curly didn't realize what was done to Anya until it was too late. I know it seems more horrible at first to have a man who is complacent with his friend r'ping a woman but it just doesn't fit Curly in my mind. He cares a lot about her, most of his flashbacks feature her, and while we could say that is because of narrative necessity, I think it very much was to show that he cared very deeply for her. I got the sense that she was the one he was truly closest to on the ship. He might have said Jimmy was before the crash but I really do think it was Anya and even he came to that conclusion in the end. She also spent the most time with him and as someone with medical background, if Curly had survived four months with the horrible injuries he had then Anya must have been doing everything in her power to keep him alive. I know it is said that she didn't finish nursing school (or at least implied), but we never find out why. Given even with the job she has, she doesn't have any savings or financial means. She could have been a brilliant budding nurse who was unable to finish due to money rather than skill. I have reason to believe she was with Curly surviving through everything.
Really though, and I say this as someone who has been SA'd, it is so much more horrifying in my mind to unknowingly enable an abuser only to find out after you have no power to do anything to fix it. Curly sees the best in people, sure, but I have no doubt in my mind that Jimmy abused that and manipulated the situation. That doesn't absolve Curly for not seeing it sooner, but I find it infinitely more tragic to have unknowingly allowed someone the ability to cause immense harm to a person you care for only to watch helplessly as that person is destroyed due to your actions.

  • @Bane_Amesta
    @Bane_Amesta 6 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

I think is quite interesting that the only moment we see Curly's face is when he tries to talk about the pregnancy with Jimmy, before the crash. I was imagining Curly all the game like an older guy, typical captain stereotype, considering he's doing the same job for years now. But instead he's actually young and quite handsome. Or at least, he's better looking than Jimmy lol.
I think is quite obvious that Jimmy is actually jealous of Curly, not only for all his achievements and/or his looks, but probably because he's actually a good guy, respected and cherised by the crew. Meanwhile Jimmy can't help but to be an asshole to everyone, and knows he's there exclusively thanks to Curly. So of course he tried to escape from his crap, and later got drunk with the title of captain when Curly was out of the way.
I bet that attacking Anya wasn't even justified by some twisted "unrequited love" for her (he can't even bother to have allucinations of her out of guilt, just the abortion because is a problem for him) only frustration and desire to have control over something, anything, like the weakest member of the crew, the only one who couldn't fight back.

This game has haunted my sleep for 2 days now, its the best psychological horror game to me, almost no jumpscares but the anticipation of one gets you everytime.
Also the scene near the end with the weird baby monster was gutwrenching to me because as a woman watching a man's playthrough i instantly knew what it was and was horrified and it actually took him a while in comparison. Also, the monster you then run from is so different, the game breaks its own established rules. The creature is fast for one, all other monsters are kind of slow, this one isnt and its also really loud compared to any others. Especially after following the eye's in the corridor scene as well, when the monster is on the wall you dont expect it to move, it got me so hard when it scuttled away. In fact, that scene may be one of two in the game with actual jumpscares.

Swansea's face seems perfectly designed to get you to associate him with bitter, ignorant old people with delusions of superiority, and his presentation is frontloaded to put him in situations that pose him as that archetype. It predisposes you to have disdain for him as jimmy seems to

Also, Swansea is said to know the ship and the equipment the best. So why did he kill Daisuke instead of putting him in the cryopod if there was any chance it would save him? My guess is that it either won't save him or just keep him in prolonged pain, since Swansea didn't even consider the option (and despite being the drunk, he makes a lot of really apt observations and choices).

6:48 I think what pisses me off the most about this interaction in hindsight is how it becomes clear that, after you figure out Curly’s not the one that crashed, Jimmy STILL truly believes Curly is the one at fault for his own destroyed state. To me this shows that Jimmy is entirely *incapable* of understanding that other people are not as selfish as he is. So, to him, Curly voluntarily going into the cockpit was just Curly trying to be a hero to be a martyr and not, you know, SACRIFICING HIMSELF TRYING TO SAVE JIMMY’S DUMB ASS.
What also pisses me off, however, is what that says about Curly. Then you compare that mindset to Curly’s, “Our worst moments don’t make us monsters,” and then you realize, just as Jimmy is incapable of understanding true selflessness, Curly’s mindset makes him completely blind to absolute evil and selfishness. He was always going to end up betrayed by Jimmy somehow, and he was always going to defend Jimmy, even if he did fully know Jimmy SAed Anya. He would do it because he maybe even *still* thinks Jimmy is completely redeemable and *must* be secretly a decent person. Which, actually, makes him a horrible authority figure. He failed to protect Anya, and he kept making excuse after excuse for Jimmy, giving him power over everything and everyone.
Normally I don’t see the point of railroaded videogame novels where the player doesn’t get to make choices of their own, but this is an outstanding example. The writing is absolutely amazing, and the fact that the twist is that Curly and Jimmy are actually complete foils of one another is so well done. Even down to the fact Curly pre-crash even kinda looks like Jimmy but with blue eyes and blond hair. Both of them have been life-long friends, but everything that happens was because both of them are entirely fucking blind to eachother’s true selves. It would be so easy to put Curly on a pedestal and say that, if Jimmy is bad, Curly’s mindset should be striven towards, but I think there needs to be a balance between the two.

I think there is further nuance beyond what you've highlighted here. I actually think there is some evidence Anya and Jimmy had some degree of consentual relations prior to any abuse.
I believe Jimmy is a psychopath in the literal sense. He can be very charming and persuasive when he needs to be, but is also prone to fits of rage when things dont go his way. I took the view he managed to initially charm Anya and they had a secret thing going on. But after that his volent outbursts, controlling nature and the psych evaluations started to show Jimmy had some serious issues. I think Anya getting Curly to do the psych eval was actually her way of trying to draw Curlys attention to the fact something isnt quite right with him. Curly had concerns too. Curlys only "dream" sequence is a load of warning signs and alarms immediately before Jimmys eval.
I also think this idea fits better with why Jimmy crashed the ship. He loses his job, his mentor, his girlfriend and probably any say in his childs life. He has had all control ripped away from him and he tries to wrestle it back by killing them all. I dont think he cares Anya is pregnant. I also think this also explains why Anya remains "nice" to him post crash. She knows hes a psycho and so to keep him calm she flatters his ego and lets him take control. Once things start to slip and she realises there is no resuce coming she makes her own decision to "leave".
Edited to clear some typos. And to say nice video, good work 👏

While it is a very well-crafted and told game, for the £11 price point, I felt there just wasn't enough of a game in there for what you're paying for. It's not very often I feel like a game could be adapted to make for a fantastic novel but Mouthwashing would make for a really interesting one, where aspects of the narrative can be elaborated on and danced around to greater effect.

I do get what you mean, but try a different perspective!.. you go to a movie in the theater and pay probably $15 dollars depending on location and time.. most of Hollywood shlock doesn't scratch the depth of this games narrative, and you only get to see it once for that $15. Mouthwashing is a quick play that honestly much like classic horror games you could always go back in a few years and replay it! I would love their to be more lore into the games world and how it became a dystopia, and what earth is like!

@VirtualResidence True. I guess it's expection though, I know what I'm getting going to the cinema. I was completely unaware that I'd get through this in less time than I've spent sat in a cinema for some films. That said, if I'd have known it was only 2 hours long, I honestly wouldn't have bought it and probably watched someone playthrough it instead, which is a shame because the devs deserve something for their hard work. Last comment: at the judgement, wasn't there a moment where Jimmy apologies to Curly, and someone, maybe the game goes "...only to him?" Or something like that. I am not sure and I'm not gonna replay to check, but I remember it because I kept having the "BUT WHAT ABOUT ANYA - or Daisuke, or Swansea, or his children and wife, you absolute d*ckwaffel of a man"...
One of the most painful things in this game, after the fact, is how absolutely devoid of self reflection Jimmy is. Which is so wonderfully poignant considering how much this game is making me reflect about it.
