  • Artificial Intelligence advocate Oren Etzioni makes a case for the life-saving benefits of AI used wisely to improve our way of life. Acknowledging growing fears about AI’s potential for abuse of power, he asks us to consider how to responsibly balance our desire for greater intelligence and autonomy with the risks inherent in this new and growing technology.
Oren Etzioni is Chief Executive Officer of the Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence. He has been a Professor at the University of Washington’s Computer Science department since 1991, receiving several awards including GeekWire’s Hire of the Year (2014), Seattle’s Geek of the Year (2013), the Robert Engelmore Memorial Award (2007), the IJCAI Distinguished Paper Award (2005), AAAI Fellow (2003), and a National Young Investigator Award (1993). He was also the founder or co-founder of several companies including Farecast (sold to Microsoft in 2008) and Decide (sold to eBay in 2013), and the author of over 100 technical papers that have garnered over 25,000 citations. The goal of Oren’s research is to solve fundamental problems in AI, particularly the automatic learning of knowledge from text. Oren received his Ph.D. from Carnegie Mellon University in 1991, and his B.A. from Harvard in 1986.

The problem is this will happen in a society which is not socially ready for it.

AI and jobs shouldn't be a threat but the blessing. What is better than advanced AI systems taking our boring, dangerous and repetitious jobs and we finally start living to the fullest with meaningful lives? All chores and production done by AI, and no need for monetary system or politics (that is just trying clumsingly to manage monetary system...).

The Food Nut, and what happens when they decide they do not want to do those jobs? What happens when they decide humans should serve them or they no longer need humans? I'll tell you what happens: You just screwed humanity.

"AI researchers are unequivocally opposed to these systems, we wrote a litter to Obama saying so."
How comforting? He's simply assuming everyone is on the same page here. Is Russia on board? What happens when North Korea gets their hands on this technology? We can't just assume good intentions, and even if we could, that still doesn't guarantee security.

EXACTLY. This is just a *propaganda* video to ensure his funding continues. But, the fact that he would be so dishonest to come and present as if he were actually presenting facts... I am, frankly, astonished the lows that researchers will stoop to these days.

So you've sent a letter to Obama asking him not to go for autonomous weapon systems, eh? Alright then, the matter's closed. What a relief, AI is never going to harm us after all, but boy was that close.

Thank you for the informative comment. I had no idea. I do note that China and Russia haven't signed it either, which is also a shame.

Unless you address some of the concerns brought up by Nick Bostrom in his book Superintelligence you are wasting everyone's time with this weak and defensive talk.
It's not exactly consoling seeing people in the field being so cavalier about the real issues of what happens when we actually succeed in creating something with same general learning ability as us but is operating with so much superior hardware and streamlined algorithms its intelligence is far beyond us.
Worrying about overpopulation on Mars is a weak analogy. Worrying about keeping nuclear weapons/power reasonably safe and in the hands of the right people is a better analogy.

AlphaGo does not play poker, does not cross the street, BUT it can learn to do so. In fact the same machine learning methodology AlphaGo uses was first applied in learning how to play video games, and the machine actually mastered 2000+ classic video games. Please get your facts straight; this only requires a simple search on youtube and watching a DeepMind video to find out.

No it can't. You might read www.wired.com/2016/06/deep-learning-isnt-dangerous-magic-genie-just-math/

Are you sure you are confident a slightly modified version of AlphaZero couldn't play poker well or cross the street?
I suggest watching the video "Google's DeepMind AI Just Taught Itself To Walk"

"Look at all those cars" said the workhorse to the other, some time after the 2012, "Soon we will not have to work and get loads of free time". Companies moving their production of eg. shoes back home to the west do not employ loads of workers. they wouldn't invest in automation if this did not mean that they would save money/energy.
The Internet is not one place, it's a grid, just like the energy distribution is also part of a grid. These grids are more or less global. The internet of things make it possible for computers to communicate, collect information and learn from each other. The so called AI is not an intelligent brain located in a big machine, and it doe's not have to be intelligent, just know more, faster in collecting information, communicating and calculation, to beat us in any game. War included. When these machines, programs and systems are made to take decisions for us, like self driving cars (and current cars that break or slow down when detecting danger), we will soon realise that more and more decisions are best left to the "System". Why have a big administration or management? Why a boss or president?
Already automation and big data is optimising results and replacing workers in areas like finance, law, medicine, military, police, agriculture, mining and anything energy/power related, just to mention a few. This development can best be understood as evolutionary. The ones who do not utilise the benefits of the new tools will die.
As a termite hive grow it start to produce new type of workers to deal with new challenges. Eg "ventilation-workers" This of course is not a result of a conscious decision by a board of termites or their queen.
    "There are no sides (...)"
A quote from many books and films.
A believe that the words "They" and "Us", as in classes, the enemy, allies, cult, congregation or party, in a rapidly changing and increasingly complex world, are concepts we use for comfort and to delude ourselves into thinking that "We" or "They" have significant power, and thus it is possible to do things outside anyone's control. People are competing inside organisations and are often members of different groups or parties working in opposition to each other. Rulers and owners of companies and countries are one day collaborating, and the next day at war. The most powerful persons in this world are also wine corks bobbing around on the waves of the sea. They might know more than you about a coming storm, but will not have an overview and thus power to do much about it.
I think Oren Etzioni with his humor and rhetorics is talking to an imaginary congregation. At least he is obviously not trying to convince anyone sceptic to his words that they might be wrong, but make it clear for his fans that any sceptic is old fashioned or ill informed. People don't agree more to what you say if you make fun of them or their thoughts. Without better arguments gaslighting would in my opinion be a better approach.
So why, and who am I writing to if this text will not have an impact on anything? maybe because you know, the comment section?

All of this talk about the threat of AI is a distraction from real, more immediate problems. AI is about to displace human labour on a massive scale and we have economic systems in place that are not equipped to deal with it.
Unless all of you who are young enough to still be around in 30-50 years from now want to live in a situation where the top 0.01% of people have 99.999% of all of the wealth while you live off whatever scraps they decide to throw you, we need to address the problem of economic inequality.
There has been talk of paying people a basic living wage, does that inspire anyone here? You want to live on a basic living wage with no possibility of earning more money? Is that a future you want to look forward to?
If you want to decent future once human labour becomes redundant, it's time to start putting the libertarian and market anarchist nut jobs in their place. The ideological war starts now.

Content is agreeable, but disliking this elitist attitude.
It is this fallacy that presuming elitism is justifies when one knows they are right. Even if out of love for science or pro rationalism, it's an invitation card for political biases to creep into one's statements and reasearch.

Are you kidding me! New jobs will be coming, oh really! Do you expect the whole world to be as advanced and as educated as the elite few who knows AI technology. Those are the people that will be affected, not us (technology savvy people!). The current cashiers that amazon are removing from the loop, who will not be able to prepare themselves for the jobs of the future due to financial and other types of limitations. Those employees are parents and they will not be able to develop new skills to have other jobs, which will affect providing the necessary education for their children! The most worrying part, that their children (the next generation) might be affected by poverty and will not be able to join the job market of the new era! I am with deploying AI, but first and foremost we should carefully plan to manage the impact of it on day-to-day jobs and basic pillars of economy. Educate cashiers to be able to have other jobs and slowly shift, but if you will relay on companies to do this, it will never happen, since they want to drop cost by all means. Funnier than this will be the idea of replacing firemen by drones to do the job, makes sense right! Less casualties and a more efficient process, ha! What will happen to those firemen who are risking their lives to help others? Will guess what, they will homeless, unless we do something to prevent that!

It's actually not hard. One way to take care of this would be using a negative income tax.
We don't need jobs; we need productivity and "stuff". If you can use automation to replace a human, the productivity gained using the automation can well support the human it replaces, freeing the human from the mundane task. It's only the transition that would be complicated but as I mentioned above, a government policy change can well make the change smooth and easy. Now, would the politipricks around the world have such vision? That's another discussion.

    • @yousefalqahtani2304
      @yousefalqahtani2304 7 ปีที่แล้ว

You have a good intake on the subject at matter, however and whats worrying me, the monetary system that we live in now a days, does not allow negative income tax to take place. Simply put, we still buy human's art for money, while the artist themselves were not in it in the begging for monetizing out of it! Now giving the current circumstances, poverty rate is mandated to increase as governments and corporates will race towards AI but during this chase, they will forget about the impact that will result during the process as the ultimate goal in all of this for them is POWER AND MONEY.
