Until this day, being nearly 50 I still don't understand how anybody can experience boredom in this world.... A functional brain can always find things to work on and be occupied even in the environments that are not "engaging"; one can engage its own brain with a minimal mental effort. People are just becoming less tolerant and very impatient (in oterh words "lazyminded") these days which results in boredom... They want an instant reward, the one that FB provides... And by the way, how can anyone accociate FB with congnitive enhancment?
It also depends on the school environment, I remember my teacher complained to my mum, that I am not paying attention at the class and I know all answers ,when asked ,so she do not even know how to punish me for not putting much attention .. so discipline was much more important than the material to learn.

Elon musk even answered this in an interview and it opened some peoples eyes). The computer is just way better at detecting an accident about to occur than a human. It's insane.
People born today are lucky to be the first generation who will be taught persoanlized education and it is only possible because AI. Still I wonder how much the students' motivation and discipline will determine the ultimate success in any learning.

The assertion that the majority of students are disengaged because they are either way ahead or behind what the teacher is teaching doesn't make any sense. The distribution would naturally be Gaussian, so that the majority of students should've been happily engaged in the classroom.
Looks like I'm gonna be the only one here thinking his method is going to miss the mark. Before 100 years ago, very few productive or influential people depended on formal education, and certainly no one relied on AI. If anything, I think his AI is going to make people dumber for the following reasons: 1) AI is dumber than humans since they lack the creative part, and 2) by spending more time with AI, students will have less time to interact with their natural environment. Therefore, when they go into the real world, they will be treated like idiot savants at best and plain idiots at worst. It will be no different than hoping that using calculators on all the tough math questions will make someone more capable at math.
Perhaps it wasn't clear enough in the talk. The point of the AI is not to replace the teacher. The system is intended to help students learn the basics faster, and more efficiently, so that the role of the teacher becomes more interesting. Rather than teaching students WHAT they need to know, face-to-face contact can more focus on WHY the material is interesting. i.e. cool projects that apply the knowledge in interesting ways. E.g., what could a child achieve if he knew maths or science. Check out the summit public schools (summitps.org) that utilise this approach (with computer aided personalised learning time mixed with project-based learning). 100% of these students meet the requirements to attend college, and are twice as likely to graduate than the national average.
Marvelous, I believe you, I've seen it. Students now have computers that they can literally ask almost any question and receive an instant answer. I believe that rather than stimulating their curiosity, it has destroyed their willingness to do research. Frequently I am asked questions by my students, and many times I respond with some variation of that 'That's an interesting question, why not look it up and share what you learn with the class?" They almost always give me some version of "No, never mind." See? If they DON'T get the instant answer, they lose interest. I could assign it, but I want them to WANT to learn it...it's a struggle.

Maybe you should consider presenting a material that needs to be such interesting, that it focuses on the students' attention immediately without even being asked. For instance, when you asked your students to look back for a question, you are literally forcing them to (1) Placing on them an "interesting question" (2) however, the question is interesting for you, rather than for the students. Thus, it may be a good strategy to answer back with an attractive question which makes the student think critically. It eventually will generate the student emotion on his own learning ability and will look according to his own curiosity. That may generate a chain of questions and so on till the students have learned, processed, discussed the findings; it can be the partners, in groups and with you monitoring. Then, your students will avoid giving the versions "no, never mind" :)
Stop teaching useless facts and focus on actual careers and skills, that's the whole point. School is just a giant waste of time. Sudbury school is the only system that actually gets it. Stop authoritarianism, and start with self direction and individual interests.
