- The narcissistic Madeline Ashton (Meryl Streep) performs 'Me' in her flop of a Broadway Musical, Songbird.
What is Death Becomes Her (1992) about?
Madeline Ashton (Meryl Streep) and Helen Sharp (Goldie Hawn) hate each other for years as they have a crush on the same man. They secretly drink a miracle cure that prevents ageing and also turns them immortal.

I'm surprised that they don't unironically open the Oscars with this song every year!
When Meryl got the AFI Lifetime Award, they opened with this song haha.
Lol a tribute to the ceremony honestly
THIS! xD
The disco section of the song is soo deliciously camp 😂 I love the ‘oooh ooooh!’ part especially
💯😂😂❤
What other source of light could they have used to make it less campy?
Love it
Me too ! 😂❤ it goes from broadway to an episode of Solid Gold!
so ridiculous and funny!!!!!!
It’s supposed to be a “bad” musical-within-a-comedy, but they can’t hide the fact that Streep can sing and dance, on top of nailing comedy, drama, and pretty much everything else. She needs to be cloned. ❤️
For me it’s when she’s walking around the spinning loveseat at 1:44. You can tell that “Madeline” is super nervous and out-of-step in that brief sequence…but Streep herself knows what she’s doing, lol! You have to be an amazing actress to convincingly play a bad actress, as Streep is!
Helen's face when Ernest says "She's sensational!" Priceless. 😂😂😂
Oh yeah😅 Total misbelief and horror LMAO! Helen overall was a classact but neurotic and infatuation with trash can be fatal😂 Surly was for Ernest!😊
😂😂
A performance that’s canonically bad but is actually great
Becoz it’s articulated to be bad and that’s great
@@The.Lilomay thats why he said canonically
i appreciate the fact that this was a single shot
Where was Meryl’s Oscar is my question
@@adreena456Good news is Meryl Streep actually won a Golden Globe for this! As she should have because she's a legend👑👏
Wait, seriously? They did this all in 1 take? Impressive!!
@@jasonmarks80 I sincerely hope you aren't any sort of educator. THAT’S your response, to laugh because someone is curious or only just learned something? It's not difficult to explain something without an attitude so pompous and derisive. I just didn't notice at the time; I do now, & that's fine.
There's definitely one cut after Bruce Willis says "she's sensational", but that's a good couple of minutes of constant filming. It's possible there might be some very clever editing (I know very little about film making)
"What I'm really made of..." while gesturing at her bosom is just such an amazing detail. I love this movie.
I love the little side eye she gives when she starts. Like it’s a bit clumsy and it’s perfect
She also did something like that in the movie “she devil” she says … dam can’t remember the line but she’s on the bed and she shakes her booty! 😊 also a fun movie!
@@TheQuota2001”I… am an ARTIST!!” 😂
I’m glad I wasn’t the only one that caught that. Like wasn’t sure if it was intentional but it was way too funny to be an accident lol
The opening credits are done in one long take,..hats off to Meryl Streep.
In live theater the whole show is done in one long "take". It's not that impressive if a professional actor does that. Not hating on Meryl, just saying.
@@LDV5g I agree live acting is the acid test, but they are not all singing and dancing all the time.
@@LDV5gFilming is more complicated than theatre. To get a perfect take you have to consider a lot of thing. For example background dancers could make some mistakes on stage and just brush it off, but if it happened in films the whole scene has to be shot again.
I'd never notices that from the first shot of Meryl Streep to Bruce Willis saying "she's sensational" was a single shot before. Unless there's some very clever editing, the first cut comes just after that.
@@LDV5g
Theater takes place on a static scene. That's merely the only difference mais this makes a huge difference when you have to film it. I'm soooo bored with bored people...
The feathers flying off her boa indicates that she is… well, cheap;)
Love this movie❤
Admit it….you thought I was…cheap!
@ Ok… I thought you were cheap;)
Zemeckis: "Save that feather! We can use it in a future movie."
Meryl Streep can do ANYTHING and this CAMP DANCE PERFORMANCE IS SO FANTASTIC!!!!!
Especially in her 40s, and pregnant only months before
2:20 I love Goldie's face of absolut disbelief and horror
same lol
This is obviously meant to be a parody of APPLAUSE, the musical adaption of All About Eve… and I am living for it.
It's actually a camp musical version of Tennesee Williams drama Sweet Bird of Youth re-titled Songbird. But I get what you mean.
Wait, what??
You turned me onto something NEW, I’m LOVING APPLAUSE! I’m skipping around the house before work hahahaha. Thank YOU!!
huh? More like parody of many musicals since mid 60s. Sad thing it's way better than anything new now.
Thanks, I'd never heard of Applause. After reading about it's backstory it seems very interesting.
The multiple musical gears Alan Silvestri manages to shift through in this three-minute spectacle... absolutely criminal he doesn't have an Oscar.
As a little gay child I was always confused by the negative reaction to what I considered to be a very entertaining musical act LOL 😂
I love it!
Same, I loved it then and I love it now. Camp is such a great thing that is always talked about negatively but it's such a guilty pleasure.
Same for me with "Oh Industry" and "Otto Titsling" from Beaches. I wanted this stuff to be legit theater.
The 90s were before camp musicals started taking over Broadway. This wouldn't have been considered "real" theatre.
I do think there's a place for musicals but I wish we had more non-musical stage works in the 2020s
This is my favourite comedy horror movie! Meryl Streep is so funny! 😂😂
The beginning of the end 😂😂😂😂 Death becomes all of them 😂❤
The ending of the movie is set in 2028- I wish we could see how they spent their last few years!!!
2029, Dr Menville is still alive right now.
I expect they had to keep buying duct tape...
Same I always wondered how they got by as they couldn’t work surely??
@@avenger67 I think we can assume they were both wealthy. But you have to be careful with your money if it has to last foreeeeeever...
@@prismaticmarcus very true! Maybe Helen kept writing books
This movie is comedy genius, shame they don’t make them like this anymore 😢 I could watch this clip 10 times in a row and love every second
Theatrical costumer here! Notice Meryl's false eyelashes. They're untrimmed on purpose, and give her an unflattering droopy look.
False eyelashes are made so you can cut them to fit your eye shape! Many people don't know this! If they extend out past your natural lashes, it can result in a shadow that makes your eyes look downturned and sad. Just trim off the excess and your eyes will instantly look more open and prettier.
The fact that Madeline would think "more is more", not realizing what she perceives will make her look young and beautiful is actually making her look sad, is very on point!
I don't think that's true. Yes they're untrimmed but it just adds to the dramatic look. World-class makeup artist here.
Hello! award winning Broadway Makeup & Hair Designer here, and I would posit that the choice in the extravagant eyelashes and the clearly inappropriate length, lean into the joke of holding onto something for too long as we age and the cult of youth the movie is sending up.
I think its also to make her look even younger after in the movie
Hello, inventor of false eyelashes here! I think it’s done to reference how some of the old Hollywood starlets wore their eyelashes, think Marilyn.
Loudmouth here, I just think they look good.
I love Meryl’s beginning movies where she was playing the “starlett on her way out” because her and ms Goldie remained gorgeous even up till now.
It’s so bad it’s good 😂
This is one of the best dark comedies ever created! I wish they made sequels tbh.
"I need a drink" "She is just awful" 😂😂
Love this movie 🍿
Gorgeous❣️Dripping in satirical comedy like diamonds from the incomparable Meryl Streep!💎
Meryl Streep is such a good actress she can effortlessly play a bad actress and I am LIVING FOR IT!
A song like this was sung in irony in 1992. Now self-hyping lyrics like this are a regular staple of the pop industry.
i put this on every morning before work.
I’m glad I bought this on DVD when it came out! 👍🏼
Me encanta como canta y baila.
Anyone notice the stairs are almost the same as the big mansion she lives in later? Lol
This is the first time I'd noticed the audience member fast asleep with his head tilted waaaay back. lol
I just noticed the feathers flying off the boa, harbinger of it all falling apart 😄
Which intern called this 'flop of a Broadway Musical'? This is GREAT lol
It's based on a very serious play called Sweetbird of Youth. This version is an utter abomination.
@@FranSanTeeth90You said it!
💥💥💥💥💥 take care of your body..
and she survived only just an hour,😂😂😅😅😅😅
I loved this whole
Movie as a kid, never laughed until college then I truly saw it with different eyes.
The guy snoring 😂
Was this before Mamma Mia? No wonder she was picked🥰🥰her voice is Wonderful
Her Voice is Superb... I see Paris ( Paris would Kill this) and Nicole ( Literally looks like a Young Goldie and her comic timing is Insane) reuniting for a Killer Remake... One of "The Chris's" Chris Pine or Chris Pratt... Come On Hollywood...
That would be a hoot!😂
Wow. She was fabulous, as always. It's sad to know these small concerts are going to be few and far between, and that one day, far too soon, will be her last. May Celine find a way to conquer her disease, even if it means we never her her beautiful voice live ever again. Thank you for all you have given the world.
Uh, this was Meryl Streep in Death Becomes Her. If you are thinking of Celine Dion she wasn't involved with this film at all.
Magnifique 👗🧤📿👠
😂🤣😂🤣 one of my favorite movies
One of the funniest movies
This would make a great musical if they could figure out the special effects
I seen another comment saying they are currently working on turning it into one!
It’s already well under way. A pre-Broadway tryout has been scheduled in Chicago in the spring of 2024.
The musical adaptation playing right now in Chicago is perfect! So camp.
This is one of my favorites ❤❤❤
I'm from India and I LOVE this song and scene 😂😂
This is camp with a capital C!
AMEN 😂👏🏾💯
I always loved this intro, I still love it ...and oh boy! She is sensational!!❤❤❤
“You me me “ It’s so cute
"You mean me ?"
Audience came to see a drag show and realized half way through it was actually her 🥲
This reminds me of musical number that Mel Brooks would have done a a parody.
Why did they hate it?? That song is a banger and underrated
i always wondered how Meryl has a good singing voice in Mary Poppins, she's had been in a musical since loooooong before
Personally I'm with Bruce, Meryl is sensational 😉
The fact that we still don't have a Death Becomes Her Broadway musical is criminal.
There is one now on broadway.
The funniest part is when they all clap...
I always wondered, What was it about the show that everyone hated?
The lyrics were all over the place, the music switches from Broadway to disco for some reason, and Madeline has a vain/narcissistic personality.
@@veronicageorge3825 You are right about the last part.
She was losing her fame rapidly by this point too and she was singing this narcissistic song, which was ironic. The character was a washed up celebrity talking about how great she is and I don't think the audience was having it. Lol.
By the way, Streep did a great job portraying this character.
@@veronicageorge3825 She didn't write it though. Actors don't typically write their own works.
Everyone hated it because it's a musical called Songbird based on a heavy Tennesee Williams drama called Sweet Bird of Youth about an aging actress and her young lover.
To treat it as this flashy musical is absurd.
Still an amazing movie😊
“askSs me” 😂
What is she supposed to say ? How do you pronounce "asks" ?
Мерил Стрип навсегда❤❤❤🎉👏👏👏👏👏
I had to “come out 🏳️🌈” after my parents saw and heard me reenacting this in my bedroom at age 10 🤦🏻♂️
Haha, that's sweet! I did the same. I mean this song and performance is sooo gay lol.
@@oscarfun100 it really is!! 😂
@@minipandora22why tho?
@@igglybuff220cute3 because they caught me singing and dancing to this ⬆️ 😂
This movie should be made into a broadway musical
I was thinking the same thing! 😁
....it literally has been. LOL - trying out in Chicago as we speak. Heading to Broadway later this year or next.
There’s a pre-Broadway musical adaptation playing in Chicago right now. And it’s perfect.
Wish granted!!
They should release a deluxe edition of this scene without the overlapping credits.
I came here to see this.
Ooohh...oooohhh 🕺
🪩
I don’t see why anybody would be walking out. For real
I like it! That audience is old!!!
I love this movie this and Beetlejuice I watch 24/7
あくまでも、自然に!生きる。これだ。しかし、二人の女優さんは、綺麗。このタイトルに相応しい。
There’s a little bit of “Touch Song”’s “Two faced woman” in this. Joan Crawford must see camp classic.
I always wondered, why all those people were leaving. It's brilliant, don't you think?? ;) Are these some really serious theatre lovers or whatever??
In the film it’s supposed to a remake of a serious drama called songbird
there is a moment before this clip when people complain about the show
Think about when respected movie today get remade and completely lose the message of the original people aren’t happy
@@darcy3439it’s a musical version of Tennessee Williams’ Sweet Bird of Youth. Songbird is the name of the musical.
It's based on a serious Tennessee Williams play. It's like watching Death of a Salesman and Willie Loman (played by Kanye West) starts breakdancing and flinging thighmasters into the crowd. It's utterly misinterpreted and miscast.
@@FranSanTeeth90It could work of done well and perhaps go with being like a satirical retelling.
and both of these women r still alive😳
idk if as friends but still they look pretty
Being like 8 or 12 i was entertained while the audience got up and left. And that's when i knew i was gay 😂
I really like it too. I'm bi. I don't even see what's not to like about it to be honest.
Narcissistic much? Love the sleeping audience better then the ones exiting lol
A contradiction, a bad addiction 😂 knock it off
i watched megan hilty perform this in the broadway musical and it was so similar!
Ahh adolescent memories lol
"and I like what I see"
felt Marilyn cringe in her grave when I heard that part
When I saw this dance intro back in 1992, at first I thought it was Jerry Hall
This is basically the human version of the Poodle's musical number from Oliver and Co
Absolutely!
The skirt reveal happens off-camera lol
Why would anyone walk out on that?
It's my guilty taste I love this song❤🎉😅 I love Meryl streep
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂❤❤❤❤❤❤
Everything I Do Is For The GAAAAAAAYZE. If you know, you know ✨️
❤ 2x
さすがです。
This song is called "I See Me."
Who came here after hearing about the Broadway adaptation of this movie?
Honestly with the amount of times I watched this as a 12 year old, that should’ve been a sure sign that I was queer.
the movie could've gone with a bad stage set or cheap ugly costumes or awful choreography but nope everything is perfect and it makes me wonder did a misunderstanding happen and the audience thought it was a regular play and they all just happened to really hate musicals and that's why they didn't like it? only explanation 😂😂
It's probably due to the fact her character literally a musical about herself and are mostly disgusting by her self vanity instead of entertained except that one guy.
Not sure if it is the writing or the fact it is Meryl Streep, but I'm having a hard time believing this lady is a bad actor
Que la vea de nuevo dice?
What?
Meryl streep would have made a great mother Gothel.
People have no taste in general, I liked it myself...
Can someone explain me to me why everyone was leaving?
They were leaving because they were disgraced by Madeline’s version
of what was something classy
and tasteful.
Instead it was alluring and seductive (Possibly age discrimination against her) Meryl made this my favorite movie intro!
in the early 90's broadway still had a somewhat sophisticated and discriminating audience
they were leaving because they recognized the show as just a tacky self-indulgent vehicle for madeline
Because listen to the song, it was a vanity project for an over the hill actress
Even if she could sing great, she could have done other great things with that voice instead of focusing on anything that's narcissistic.
She is so seductive
Alguem traduza esta música por favor
She looks like Paris Hilton 😅😅
Definitely Kathy Hilton.
