His "rambling" is what i call passionate and critical teaching. he can relate something like music and its "odd" time signature labeling to life and other areas in it. This is quality teaching.
THANK YOU DERRICK POPE!!! You are a great teacher. Although I'm sure you hear that all the time. What you showed in 10 mins I learned more than 1 hour's lesson at my local drum shop. KEEP MAKING VIDEOS!!! I LEARN SO MUCH!! THX!!!
Ohhh, man! I hate to admit it, being a drummer and all...but this is the FIRST time that somebody has explained this to me and I actually understand it!! Hoooray! You don't know how happy this makes me! All those years of school band and I never got the hang of this odd-time stuff. Sir, you are my hero! :-) Please keep making more videos!
Also, you're a great teacher man. I love the idea of counting in smaller numbers. For 11/8, I'll count 1234-123-12-12. And for 21/16, it's 123-123-123-1-123-123-123-12, because that's the pattern I'm playing, always accenting the one. I still can't believe you tackled that one. Again, great teaching and great ideas. Thank you.
I'm going to have to agree with all these people. You are a GREAT teacher! You possess every positive trait that teacher could have. Pleeease keep it up!
playing in crazy time signatures is fun i had a 13 /8 for piano and i am trying to drum out of the 4/4 norm i am glad there is a video out there that addresses crazy time signatures. this is what real music is all about. good job derrick
Thanks for all your lessons! You do ramble a little bit but it's amusing, rather than annoying. :-) You are the first person to really explain the ins and outs of playing odd times. I'm definitely going to check out your other videos.
I just wanted to say thanks for posting this. I've been playing drums for quite some time, but most of my knowledge is through self education. This video really helped simplify my timing and gave me more appreciation for the complex beats. Cheers!
Quite probably the best explanation I've ever listened to...including the rambling...thank heavens for lamens terms and thank heavens for you!! Really!
You sir, are a genius! I am not a drummer (I use a drum program) but I've always wanted to create a more dynamic and interesting element to my music when I write, you have explained this in a fantastic way and I have learned a lot! Thanks again, great job and a great teacher!
god this lesson was really helpful im more of a guitarist than a drummer but i do play both but this is the most helpful lesson ever ..why? because this dude is funny and he explains them so easily and gives them a quality rather than other people trying to make them complex like when he says dont make them jump out at you like "HEY IM AN ODD TIME SIGNATURE" keep it flowing just amazing keep up the good work dude!!
holy crap dude this helped me out so much, i can't believe i've been drumming for years, and i never understood time signatures properly. no teach was able to tell me it properly. i will be making a generous donation to your website soon! respects, ganja4life peace.
This is amazing, I'm a guitar player and I found this video very helpful. I was pretty much in the right direction with my odd signature counting, but wasn't sure if I was correct. Also I watched the whole video, which doesn't happen very often, because usually, people who make lessons on youtube are amateurs and don't know how to keep others interested, even professional musicians lack teaching skill. Your lesson was very vivid and interesting, keep it up. P.S. + for Breaking Benjamin t-shirt
Thankyou for this. I'm 14 and I play several instruments, and you really seem to know your stuff. I REALLY agree with what you're saying about using them tastefully and that odd time signatures are used best when they are almost hidden. Rush did that very well. The examples I like to use include Golgi Apparatus by Phish where there's a 7/4 section that you don't notice or Blue Rondo a la Turk by the Dave Brubeck Quartet, which is in 9/8. Great video, cleared some stuff up for me! Thanks!
this is so unformational and understandable ! i randomly came arcoss this video and i dont even play the drums. i do play other instruments and this helped me out so much cause i suck at counting! THANK YOU SO MUCH DUDE!
I wrote a song in 21/16!! Haha, that is so cool. I love the idea of odd time signatures and I like how they work in with music. Nice video, man. I'm not even a drummer (Guitarist-violinist), but I also learned some stuff from this video. Keep rockin'!
I dreamed of this kind of video when I was a kid and first discovered I couldn't air drum to the solo and outro of Tom Sawyer like I could other popular songs! It took a long time for me to understand the concept of time signatures... I only wish I had You Tube when I was 10. Thank you for the entertaining video- especially the rambling.
thanks so much for this vid! i've only been playing guitar for a couple of years and lately, i've really been wanting to learn how to count different time signatures like in death metal and stuff. it was confusing the hell outta me, but after watching this vid i started trying it and i can do it like a champ, coming up with some really cool riffs. thanks, brotha!!!
Couldnt have broken it down better myself...I teach the exact same theory at school... And lets just say theres alot of "drummers" out there who try to make a big deal and scare people with ODD TIMES!!! But your exactly right its just a way of counting and breakin it down is simple... Awesome
Cool, this is really helpful... cool that you brought up dream theater, made me think of "The Dance of Eternity" ;) Lol, and the "Why did i open the hi-hat and give it a pssst?!" haha, good job on the video.
1st of all,I really like your vids. Clear and concise. I teach and tell students to check ya out all the time. Keep up the great work. Btw, you seem to turn the time around at around 7:58 and don't come back. Oops! Sheet! It is easy to do when improving in 5/4. Surprised noone else caught it.
Thank you so much derrick.. time signatures were a dark cold thing i use to keep in the closet, till your un believable explanation of it all.. derrick you are an amazing teacher and player by your paradidles lol keep em comin man.. peace
If you play 3+3+3+3+1, you're playing a part of Genesis's Firth of Fifth piano solo. The exact part, is rhythmed exactly like that. It's a brilliant piece.
brilliant.. checked out the wikipedia article about time signatures, and it was no good.. you, however, explained it all in a simple, understandable way :)
I would reccommend ANY musician (not just drummers) whose trying to learn how to approach odd time signatures to watch this video. You're a great teacher! No offense though, but if you were my instructor, I definately wouldn't pay you per hour with that rambling bit at the beginning. XD
so ive ben trying to figure out this groove ive been playing in a bridge... i knew it had a wierd feel.. and i knew it was some metric modulation cause the bass is still going in 4/4 they eventually match up... so the break is the 7 and 6 grouped 13/8... thanks man
His "rambling" is what i call passionate and critical teaching. he can relate something like music and its "odd" time signature labeling to life and other areas in it. This is quality teaching.
I've been playing these time signatures for years without knowing it. You are a fantastic teacher!
THX!!!
I'm not even a drummer but with a basic knowledge of music, that was completely clear! Great job.
Ohhh, man! I hate to admit it, being a drummer and all...but this is the FIRST time that somebody has explained this to me and I actually understand it!! Hoooray! I wish I could find a teacher like this where I live .... He explains sooo well . Thank you very very much !
I've watched over 10 time signature videos and yours is by far the best!
The ramble at 5.00 was awesome. So awesome. Everone who is watching DOES knw what you mean. AWESOME. Great teacher. Keep up the videos man

You killed it man. You just helped me understand a musical concept that was so foreign to me before. Great teacher. Thanks a ton!
holy crap dude this helped me out so much, i can't believe i've been drumming for years, and i never understood time signatures properly. no teach was able to tell me it properly. i will be making a generous donation to your website soon! respects, ganja4life peace.
this was hillarious and informative. I've sailed the 7 seas looking for a video that explains odd time signatures. thank you.
Tool is another band known for having really unique time signatures, as a drummer their music is orgasmic.
I have no trouble with time signatures at all and still watched this video from front to back.
Dude, this helped A WHOLE FUCKING LOT... Now I hear Meshuggah, Dream Theater and a whole bunch of bands through a whole new perspective... Thanks!
This is amazing, I'm a guitar player and I found this video very helpful. I was pretty much in the right direction with my odd signature counting, but wasn't sure if I was correct. Awesome
lol, "oh yes I am in an odd time signature! ODD ODD!" I already knew what odd time signatures were but this video cleared a few things up thanks.
I don't play drums but this still really helped me understand time signatures and counting them.
great vid (minus the 7min intro LOL)... I've been playing for about 15 years, and this is the best timingbreak down I've seen.
Great video compadre! I had a good understanding of time signatures, but this helps for sure.
Thank you!
This is very helpful to my understanding of time signatures.
Extremely good vid! I am very comfortable in odd time sigs, but I still learned hell of a lot from this vid!
Derrick Your instruction are great please do more ,Bob
Great video. Nice to see a tuition video where the teacher actually knows what the hell he's talking about!
This video was amazingly helpful to me. Thank you very much!
Wonderful. You've got a knack for teaching.
Mr Pope; You sir , are a teaching genius-
Cool, this is really helpful... cool that you brought up dream theater, made me think of "The Dance of Eternity" ;) Lol, and the "Why did i open the hi-hat and give it a pssst?!" haha, good job on the video.

Business as usual, Derrick: excellent work :-)
Dang....I just had an epiphany and was able to count the drumming on the main groove in Mirrors by Between The Buried And Me. Thank you.
You are really good at explaining this stuff. therefore a good teacher.
Thank you so much derrick.. time signatures were a dark cold thing i use to keep in the closet, till your un believable explanation of it all.. derrick you are an amazing teacher and player by your paradidles lol keep em comin man..

Man! You should consider teaching quantum physics at the University! Everyone is gonna be a great Physicist after learning from you! Great Teacher!
this helped me very much for my music theory class. I need to find a meter in a song, and I was not very good at counting odd times.

Great video, you put this very well
@TheDoodMan - He doesn't use any filler language: "you know" or pauses like "umm". You're right, great articulation.
Excellent video...a little long but your style is very helpful. Keep posting good stuff. Very talented.
I play guitar and was extremely helped by this. thanks

I would reccommend ANY musician (not just drummers) whose trying to learn how to approach odd time signatures to watch this video. You're a great teacher! No offense though, but if you were my instructor, I definately wouldn't pay you per hour with that rambling bit at the beginning. XD
Awesome thing I noticed, on the 13/8, that the 3+3+3+4 imposes a neat sub-measure rhythm.
good hands. This video helped BIG time Thank you.

21/16=the most ridiculous time signature that no one would ever use lol
thanks brother that was beautiful
This is really helpful for piano or bass.
Does anyone know what happened to Derrick?
