Derrick Pope, where are you?!! You were one of the first drum teachers I followed on youtube. Not many vids - but really good content... One of the first guys on youtube explaining advanced stick techniques. Then you seemed to get ill, I think one vid is even from a hospital? Then... nothing. Not for 9 years. A lot of people think you are no longer with us. I see a post from you from 8 months ago down the thread, so I'm pleased to see that isn't true. But hey, about saying hello to your subscribers? ;-)
This is the best explanation for traditional grip technique I have found after searching tons of instructional videos. Great job and thank you Derrick for such an amazing video!
ive been working on trad grip for a couple months now. hard at first, well, still hard for me, but i get these little breakthroughs and when it happens it feels so good. i swear i swing more this way. its also made me understand bounce better and my match playing has improved. good lesson!
I'm pretty much a beginner drummer, so I'm still learning a lot. I found this video to be very helpful. I've seen a few other vids about traditional grip, and this one, in my opinion, is one of the best! I appreciate the details you shared about specifically how to hold the stick. I think I might like to watch your other videos, too.
Obviously been a while since anyone commented on this. I've been a traditional grip player exclusively for 25 years and agree completely with what Derrick taught. Gotta add one thing though. To get more volume and power out of this grip, you can use your ring finger to flick the stick toward the outside of your body while opening up the gap between your first finger and thumb. Then use your thumb to force the stick back toward the head while again closing the gap with your first finger. This eliminates the need to tuck your elbow so far inward thusly exerting less energy to achieve an accented stroke.
man i love the way you teach, very helpfull, you keep it simple and make it so easy to understand, and i actualley really like it when u ramble on hahaha it gives your videos character and like this more fun to watch. i especially found helpful the video you made about odd time signatures, since then i've learnt a whole lot more and it feels alot more natural when playing in an "odd" time signature. im sharing your vids with all my drumming friends. hope to see more of u again ;)
Since I switched myself to trad grip a couple of years ago, I'll try to give you a little help. I think you'll gain control and looseness as weeks goes by.You have to get used to use certain muscles.Just remember that the fulcrum is between your thumb and your hand. To allow the stick to rebound, you mustn't choke the stick with your other fingers.
Dont worry. I have TINY hands. But i just got moved to snare drum. And Traditional grip is amazing. Only took me a week or so to get it...but PRACTICE is the key. I just held my stick in my left hand for a while and messed around with the grip until i got comfortable with it. And this vid is what helped me out too lol.
Bro, I thought you were gonna be the first to bring the full march tilt to the kit, then you turned it back and made your point while simultaneously shattering my dreams.....
Thanks Derrick, I am going to be playing in a drumline in my high school and traditional grip is required. I have experimented with it but i am not strong in it yet so hopefully i can utilize your tips until I have to play somewhere important! hahah Thanks so much for the video!
thanks dp for the very good explanation of the traditional grip. now i know how to do it correctly and hope that my skills go on to grow a little bit more faster. practice practice practice (patience patience patience ;) ) cya in 2 years
Hey Derrick, its been such a while that the length of your hair grew so much since your last few videos, when I saw it, I was like "damn, when the hell did he get it to reach his neck's end!" or probably even lower or WAIT A MINUTE! I hope that ultra-fast hair-growing potion from The Simpsons was a lie. Anyways, major thanks go to your contributions that i've made pretty good use of, so far. Cheers,
Great vid mate. Informative and entertaining as well. Lowering the left elbow also reduced the chances of the military drummers having their left arm shot off from musket ball or shrapnel. FWIW, they weren't drummers as such, but signallers who relayed information to the troops on the field via drum patterns. :-)
lmfao his face at 1:43 ^-^ great video dude. i have to learn this 'cause im going into highschool and i'm on snare for marching. this really helped. you rock.:D \m/
Have you given up on drumming and stick control?! Thank you sir for your shared knowledge. I have one of your videos saved in one of my prefered playlists since it was still in its younger ages! :D
Derrick explains the grip AND the arm stroke, which is what separates this video from the rest. Also, he has really long fingers, which make it easy to see what he is doing!
additionally, the drums in the military were slung and at an angle as a precusor to having your rifle/weapon at the "ready" or to respond to enemy fire. they didn't keep the drum angled for the hell of it.
I don't understand why a video on how to simply hold the stick takes between 6-13 minutes, and other more complicated drum tutorials of actually playing stuff takes alot shorter... But not criticising the video, thanks - helped alot!
Ok so I have 5 months to learn how to do this.. I'm trying to get to the military marching band and traditional grip is crucial over there! Wish me luck!
FYI FROM DERRICK Hey folks, there is a quick ringtone quite noticeable towards the end of the video. There might even be two, I dunno, point is: fair warning because I was going nuts while editing thinking my phone was going off. My bad, its my phone, sorry if it constantly makes you check yours. :P
@drumninmer34 just some helpful tips, Mole skin is a great idea if your switching grips, you can buy it at like, pharmacys and stuff. its soft on one side, and helps you from getting blisters/raw skin. two, the flexible skin between your thumb and index finger, isn't called your weenis. your weenis is the skin on your elbow. haha(:
I have been practicing with traditional grip a lot lately and, really, I get much better bounce and note quality with my left hand now. Yay! But, as a primarily rock drummer, I can't seem to get that same snap on the snare that I can get with matched grip. Even with the elbow-in trick, I just don't get that power. Any suggestions?
Hi Darrick! First thank you very much because the video is very useful. Next, I've got a problem, anfter the use of the traditional grip I feel pain at the ring finger. How can I solve this problem?
I'm not sure if your still on here and replying to comments. this video readily helped me with the grip. I'm just now switching from bass to snare and I hand issues with diddles and buzzes and sometimes even rolls. how do you think I could fix that asks get better with that? Thank you ((:
My problem with this grip and trying to learn it is that cushion between my thumb and pointer finger hurts whenever im playing . not sure if thats normal but im not going to stop practicing and learning this grip
Thanks Derrick, great video! I have a question, I just started playing not too long ago and have a slightly mangled thumb on my left hand(maybe 60-70% speed with full range of motion). Does traditional grip require a bit less direct thumb use as it seems? Would you recommend this grip for those of us with a slow and stupid off-hand thumb?
So I need to make sure that when I practice the traditional grip that my left wrist should be the only thing moving, while refraining from the urge to include my wrist?
I learned traditional placing the stick on the soft spot between the cuticle and the knuckle. Does it really matter cause ive spoken to people from a well know university with a well known drumline. I know in core style music they place it on the cuticle but is it necessary or is it preference?
I find that using this grip on a flat snare is much more difficult. Having it angled forward like many of the jazz greats did allows for much easier application and better control. Is there anything you can do to the technique to make it easier?
is it normal if the the stick comes off my ring finger as it comes off, or is this sloppy technique? i'm just doing quarter notes and 8th notes, not rolling or bouncing the stick.
well... i was using the matched gripping method for the last 3 years and jst before two or three days i switched to traditional method. But now the part between my thumb and the index finger is hurting like hell!! please.. need help!! :(
I've started practicing traditional non stop for like a week and my Ron finger is really sore where where the stick rest, does it mean that's wrong or is it normal
Hey Derrick, I don't know if you'll read this, but I have a question.. Since yesterday, I have begun trying to learn the traditional grip but have played matched grip for the past 6-7 years. I'm starting to notice, while using the traditional grip, that my weenis between my index finger and thumb is sensitive to the rotation action w/ the stick. It kind of hurts, as if the muscle/nerves/whatever is tender to the weight/pressure from the stick as I stroke. I was just curious if this is normal? :)
I'm female and have pretty small hands. I have to learn traditional for college drum line this year, but it feels like its hard to keep my thumb and index finger together on my left hand, they always end up slipping apart. Is it possible my hands are just too small or fingers are just too short for traditional grip?
Derrick Pope, where are you?!!

Awesome vid; I'm trying out for the WVU snareline in a month and a half so this really helps.
Great vid mate. Informative and entertaining as well.

Aside from the this vid being a great tutorring tool. Derrick is a very funny man.
I see why you've been gone so long, there's a halo poster in the background! :)
great vid as always, keep them coming!
Hmmm. It took him 2 years to master the trad grip...Well. Good luck to me and my tiny fingers. :|
Another great video by Mr. Pope...Kudos, my hero!!!

My problem with this grip and trying to learn it is that cushion between my thumb and pointer finger hurts whenever im playing .
not sure if thats normal but im not going to stop practicing and learning this grip
+JBHviews It's normal for a pussy. Suck it up and play.
thanks, excellent

I had the same Vic Firth Ralph Hardimon sticks with me when I found this video lol
thanks man.
The thumb and forefinger connect? I'm going to try that, but I noticed Joe Morello doesn't do that. Thoughts?
So I need to make sure that when I practice the traditional grip that my left wrist should be the only thing moving, while refraining from the urge to include my wrist?
need new vid sir Derrick please

I don't even play drums and find this very interesting.
Mitch Mitchell did haha grat video man ! really
we don't use middle finger right? if we use traditional grip for left hand.
