I like to believe that the scene where Tsuda messes around and flies the kites is a metaphor of her actually experiencing what children her age shouldve. Like restoring her innocence, since children often fly kites and play around. She's been doing dirty work for so long and when she saw the kites and joined them just felt so significant. We got to see her smiling and laughing while flying the kites and i just find that so child-like. Its heartbreaking.

Can’t decide whether Hoshino was born a psychopath or is like a reflection of the society around him, first the school’s positive image of a model student, then the school’s dark side of vicious bullying

The late 90s and early 2000s was a golden age of Japanese cinema, especially youth oriented entertainment. It doesn't get talked about enough but we had some EXCEPTIONAL films come out during this period...Blue Spring, All About Lily Chou Chou (which to me is like the 3rd best film ever made), battle royale, perfect blue, ichi the killer, pulse, suicide club, spirited away, waterboys (for the lighthearted)...it was such a great time.

I wouldn't say this is my favourite movie, but it is surely my reference one. I discovered it back in 2003, when I was studying cinema, and for a year I watched itevery day, non stop, sometimes 2 or 3 times in the same day. I analyzed it in every posibl angle, trying to get a grip of what magic operated in its creation. Of course, I failed miserably, the end result is bigger than the sum of the parts (thus the magic). Still, a pivotal film/moment in my life and a work of art that I treasure deeply in my heart.
Kudos for connecting it to Pulse/Kario, another long time personal favourite and, beneath its horros cover, an essay in sadness and isolation in the modern society.
    Thanks, great video

thank you for this! with its run time being 2 and a half hours some bits of the movie failed to register in my mind and this cleared it up for me so thank you! but also something that still doesn’t quite register was the r*pe scene and if Yuichi knew it would happen because later in the junkyard the girl (forgot her name but the one with the bob who basically lead Kunos hate train) confronts the boys and discussed killing Hoshino because she didn’t want or tell them to go as far as they did pointing out that she didn’t know it would happen so maybe Yuichi also didn’t but this thought doesn’t really make sense when you compare it with how Yuichi was crying outside the shed like he knew everything that was going on in there. I’m hoping that the case is he didn’t know because while he did essentially get “revenge” for Yukon it would suck to have another persons trauma especially one as severe and serious as r*pe be used as character development.

    • @ringostone6983
      @ringostone6983 2 ปีที่แล้ว +60

Yuichi didn't necessarily know that the said act would be done to Kuno in the junkyard. However, knowing the situation that Shiori Tsuda was in and the things she had experienced, Yuichi knew that Kuno would also turn out the same way and experience the same things. In addition, I believe he also admires/likes Kuno, so this just adds into his anger and frustration.
His crying was like a symbolism of his frustration and guilt for being a part of the problem. This, along with Tsuda's death afterwards, would then serve as a type of turning point for him to understand that he can't take it anymore, hence leading to him killing Hoshino.

i still wonder whether he used the forum as a true view of himself at that time or just in some twisted way trying to humanise himself and manipulate the people on the forum if you get what i mean? i mean pawning the apple off to yuichi and still overall being a dick at the concert was what made me think that

Very nice video analysis. It was particularly valuable for me for placing the film in the context of other Japanese pictures released near the turn of the millennium.
It should be noted that, despite its grim themes, AALCC is also at times a very funny movie. Even though the young people do crazy things, the filmmaker is very sane and sees both the tragedy and the absurdity of what is happening.

i love the intro !!! i think the message is similar to evangelion (also the social context and all) but it's more humanistic in my opinion, and closer to the reality of some people nowadays: music, art and movies have the power to make you feel understood and ease some of the pain away. relationships also have that power and are very important, but people make mistakes and sometimes they just can't grasp how their actions affect others, because they're consumed by pain/some other overwhelming feeling, and miscommunication makes everything destructive. being alone for a while and trying to understand how your own mind works is not necessarily a bad thing. evangelion is probably on the other end of the spectrum trying to warn viewers about the dangers of escapism through media consumption and how avoiding people is bad for the individual, which is a problem of its own too but oh well. balance is key i guess

    Ammmaaaaazing review!
This is my favourite movie since I watched it many years ago, like in 2006 or 2007.
Maybe it's not the most dynamic movie, but if you watch with the right mood, and open mind, you enjoy it a lot. Since the first time I watched this movie, I watch the life in a different way, I enjoy music different, and that's why if I feel sad or hopeless, just I watch the movie and I feel calm.
The ether is there, and it's good to see that people like you show how awesome is this movie.
Many other movies from Shunji Iwai are amazing too. The atmosphere that he build in every movie is amazing. Swallowtail Butterfly, Love Letter, April Story and obviously Hanna and Alice are great too.
And sorry for my bad english.
    Greetings from Mexico :)

Can you do another one of these videos but with Fallen Angels by Wong Kar Wai I tried watching Chungking Express to make more sense of it but I feel like there are some missing pieces.

      That's a great suggestion actually !
I love Chungking Express .. but somehow fallen angels just didn't work for me ..and I know for a fact that i didn't understand it entirely, which is why i felt that way... so an analysis on that would be really great, i agree !

As someone who recently turned 19, don't worry! Your age doesn't really change anything
People will have more expectations towards you and the pressure will get a little bit bigger but at the end of the day, you'll realize you'll be fine. It can be pretty fun too because you get more freedom so be sure to enjoy because one day you'll miss it.
