    Nice video. I have an interview coming up and they advertised the pay rate. Do you automatically by default start at the lowest rate advertised? Or can you negotiate your rate based on the scale provided? Let’s say for example, that the pay grade starts at 45,000 and can go up to 67,000. Do they start you at 45 or is it based on experience? Are you able to ask for the starting salary to be more? And last question I read that there are benefits for continuing education for employees, but what about dependents? Our children offered any type of assistance with college? Thank you.

    • @theTSAguy
      @theTSAguy  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You can negotiate salary before you accept the final job offer. Whatever GS pay grade you're hired at you can ask for a higher step. For example if you are hired at GS-12 Step 1, you can ask for GS-12 step 3 or higher. However you will need to show that you have experience that qualifies you at the higher step or GS level. You can ask for a higher GS level but you can't go higher than the advertised promotion potential. If job you applied for a GS-5/7/9, job then the highest pay you can ask for a is a GS-9. The pay grades are filled based on your skill level demonstrated on your resume and HR also has quotas they need to fill. So if only 10 spots are open at the GS-9 level and all 10 are filled, then they don't have to honor your request for a higher starting salary.
      I asked for higher pay after 3 months of working and my agency honored it, so you can always make you case and see what happens.

    I have a serious question man, I have congenital Iris coloboma in one of my eyes and I know for a fact that I cannot correct it’s vision in any way ( no eyes glasses or surgery ) but my other ( healthy ) eye is 20/20, could I still get a job for the TSA or perhaps a different government job? It’s hard for me to find a career because of my annoying eye condition and absolutely nothing can correct it.

    • @theTSAguy
      @theTSAguy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don’t think this should be a problem. I worked with a guy who wore an eye patch and was able to do the work without any issues. You may get disqualified at the medical exam with an option to appeal. Just have your doctor complete the paperwork and you should be good to go.
      If you haven’t subscribed go ahead and do so, I’ll have more videos coming.

    • @theTSAguy
      @theTSAguy  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The short answer is no, you will not get grandfathered benefits because you were never a permanent employee.
      See the OPM Congressional testimony transcript. www.opm.gov/news/testimony/111th-congress/temporary-employee-practices-how-long-does-temporary-last/
      Also if you are not in service for 4 consecutive days or longer you incur what is called a "break in service". When you get rehired after a break in service you are subject to the new Federal benefit policies....unless your break in service is converted to a transfer but this must be done with in a certain frame. • @theTSAguy
      @theTSAguy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, these are benefits for all federal employees. Retirement benefits only kick in after a certain time frame.
      You get vested into your TSP after 3 years. Meaning you can keep all the money the fed matched regarding your contributions. You’ll be eligible for retirement benefits after 20 years, at the earliest. If you leave after 5 years and 1 month you get to keep your TSP and cash out your annual leave, you don’t get anything else.
      The benefits vary based on your job, for example law enforcement jobs get different retirement benefits and their retirement time requirements are very different from non law enforcement jobs.
