I’m gonna get this game just because they actually have some of my favorite characters from the show in here. Jellal & Gildarts! I was really into the show back in the day and while I HATED that ridiculous unnecessary and unwanted Time Skip some of the characters that came out of it were pretty good. All in all I like who they added and it seems like a fun care free RPG I can appreciate it at this point in life.

Done. Told them stuff like they need to fix the awakening mode with alternative costumes on and that i was a little disappointed with mirajane having like 6 skills. No normal satan soul skills while the model is in the game for the unison raid with erza. For the rest some small stuff :P

I mean the game has a 3D Ichiya. Do you really need another reason to buy it?
Ichiya is the real plot of this game! Out of all other popular characters they chose him to be one of the 16 playable characters, and I love it :D
I like how Ichiya is full of weakness in this game,making him the worst playable character of all choice XD

pre-ordered this around march and it finally came! I played it for like 8 hours yesterday, it's very addicting. I'm so glad I got it, Fairy Tail is my favorite anime and this game gives me so much nostalgia

for me: it makes sense it doesn’t start you at the very beginning of the story. cause that would be a lot of arcs to go through. it makes sense to start it at the GMG-Tartorus arc (i spelled it wrong i know) cause they are the most well known storylines and it fits the goal of rebuilding the guild’s reputation. but it would be confusing for someone who’s new to fairy tail to play this game cause they would have to get really far into the series to know what’s going on 🤔
It started at the end of the Tenrou arc, but GMG and Tartaros were the main focus

I was really, REALLY hoping there would be a dub for this game. Todd, Cherami, Colleen, everybody who was on the show. All I wanted was to hear them do their characters, just one last time, one final rodeo, and end the franchise with a bang!
Haven't watched the dub myself but definitely agree - if you're going to make 1 game and pay respects to a long series then go all-out!

I forgot this came out, can’t wait to pick it up, it seems to be right up my ally, I love turn based RPGs, but this one doesn’t really seem to have much discussion on it. There’s a few but it’s definitely not blowing up

Awesome review, for dlc they announced that existing characters in the game will be playable and lots of new skins coming August 6th. I hope story dlc is possible but I'm just glad to finally see a fairy tale game release in the west finally lol.
Thx - apprectiate it! :) Thankfully the new playable characters will be free. Story DLC would be nice but given where the game's story ended a sequel might be better. Let's hope this isn't the only release in the west we'll get :D

The reasons why today’s Anime games don’t have English voices now because Bandai dropped out the R1 anime distribution industry years ago, which is where they pulled in most of their voices for the video games division. Today they only dub the games that are expected to pull in a large amount of profit like anything from the Tales franchise.
thats no excuse. voice actors are dirt cheap, because of how little actual work goes into the job. you could cheaply and easily find VA's who can closely or perfectly emulate the english voice cast for the people

When I was in school they would force me to slow down my reading so other people could keep up.
As such I am no longer use to reading fast.
Also multitasking in this manner also is a problem for me.
I think they should have both the dub and the sub.

I'm quite tempted to buy it just to play with Rogue as much as I want, yet... I'm not sure. Aside from Pokémon, I'm not really into turn-fighting-RPGs.
Yup that'd be great! If wanting to play Rogue if the main thing you may want to wait for a price drop, pretty sure it'll happen in a few months

Got the Platinum. it's a good game really, It's very much like an Atelier game. For sure kinda low Budget but very Fun Rpg.
Would recommend it if you are a fan of Fairy Tail or if you like RPG like Atelier.
if not maybe wait for a price drop, it's still worth a try.
It would be nice if the dlc can take place in earlier arcs. One of my favorites are the edolous arc and the celestial spirit arc

I get what you’re saying about how it’s weird they started at the Grand Magic Games arc, but I’m a long time fan of Fairy Tail and two of my top favorite arcs are the GMG and Tartaros so I was actually pretty excited that it started there lol. But I can see how this leaves people new to the story out of the loop in terms of terminology and dialogue. Maybe this will motivate them to watch the anime.
Yeah, I mean I get the premise of this game is that you also get to build up your guild from scratch so the the 7 year timeskip seems like a perfect time for that. But people need context to love a story and its characters. Hope so too!
Swrinny Yeah it seems like the game was aimed mostly at people that were already Fairy Tail fans. Maybe if the game does well they’ll do kinda like prologue games where we can play through the arcs before GMG considering the only arcs that happens after Tartaros in the main anime is Avatar and the Alvarez Empire which is only enough for one more game.
@@Rivia20 Definitely! I hope they will give us more content one way or the other. Wouldn't actually be surprised if they end up adding Alvarez as DLC instead of a new game.
Swrinny I was really hoping the game would already cover the last arcs or we would get Alvarez as DLC. Fingers crossed it’s DLC🤞🏽cause I can’t see Alvarez being worth a separate full price game.
Man... I really hope there’s gonna be a fairy tail with CaC like what AoT2 did. Even tho you know what’s going to happen, seeing the events unfold in POV really makes a difference.
It'd be cool to be part of the guild with your own character :D And now that you mention it - this would've worked for this game seeing as there's not really much main character progression going on. Most of that happened during the arcs prior to where this game started.
I bought this game with some trepidation, not sure I would like the overall gameplay. I took a chance, given that it was on sale. It's a pretty good turn base combat game. I'm glad I bought it. Gust knows how to make a good turn based game
I love Fairy Tail. But I didn’t know how much I’d enjoy the game, but to my surprise I’ve really enjoyed it. Put in 17 hours in 2 days and just getting to the Tartarus arc. To me, it feels like playing Pokémon in terms of the battle style.
My only negative is that you don’t get Mirajane til end game and that’s just ughhhhh to me
Haha, Mira is such a tease in this game - same with Gildarts. You see them in the guild from the start and then you have to wait ages in order to play them :( Glad you enjoy it!
Im a bit put off that it throws you in at the end of an arc. Never seen it until the game. Id thought they would have started at beginning
Yeah that felt really weird. The developer said in an interview that they wanted to base this game around building up your guild, so the point in time after the 7 year 'timeskip' does make sense in that regard. Guess they just needed a little bit of story before that for a visually-stunning tutorial

I would have started it from the beginning. Once it got to the GmT arc I would have introduced the guild building and skill evolution aspects. It would revitalize your interest in the game by introducing you to not only a new major story arc but also new major game play changes, while still giving people who know nothing about the series.

Anime: Gray absent-mindedly missing clothes - Lucy only uses Urano Metria twice (She also used it in the OS arc, iirc)
Game: Gray losing clothes = passive ability, Lucy can use Urano Metria at any opportunity after unlocking it
I haven't seen Fairy Tail but i like JRPGs. So i may check this out when it goes down to $30.
Cool, maybe it's a good chance to the out the anime/manga? If you get up to episode 117/chapter 240 you'll be right at the point in time where the story in the game starts :)
The reason for the time gap is most likely that the show was finally localized to completion a couple years ago with the full English Dub. It took them forever to finish it, but if I recall correctly it finally wrapped up in like 2017 or something.
Im a huge fan of this series, but there is no way in hell im buying this for full price. Doesn't seem worth it.

It has weak graphical fidelity for a ps4 game, lazy npc models,outrageous season pass prices, horrible side quests and story, easy non challenging combat, the typical jrpg quirc and so on. There are better turn based games that exist then what this game has shown.

I’m interested in the game. Knowing what part of the story is covered and how many characters there are, I’m waiting until the price drops. I’m still hoping for a pirates warrior 4 style fair tail game.
I'd think that could work very well too. Especially when you look at the amount of characters in the Fairy Tail universe and how big and overwhelming a lot of the attacks actually were in the manga/anime
Swrinny honestly I feel like everything that happens where this game leaves off warrants it. The Alvarez arc and the 1 before was literally them against hordes of enemies
I want to get this for my son and even when he can talk to npcs, he's just runs through the whole game without interacting with anyone. Hopefully he doesn't skip the scenes. He loves the anime as his parents do as well.
I SERIOUSLY dont know why other people are giving this game negative reviews. Im 10 hours in and the gameplay is so addicting. Characters and battle animations are awesome and jaw dropping at times. Loving this game so far.
Haven't watched/read too many reviews but I can agree that, as games in general, if you compare this to other games for the same price it does feel lacking. But as a Fairy Tail fan it's the best we got so far and great to play through!
Agreed! I also have a major softspot for the series because I grew up with it but the gameplay is amazing. I have been non stop playing the past few days because it's so addicting!

I look at this as a Starting for Gust if they keep making Fairytail games. It's fine, I also heard that if this does well enough Gust said they'd do a Action RPG for Fairytail might be a rumour but let's see

I just found this game on Playstation store with a price drop - it's going for $39.59 and i'm really thinking about purchasing it. Given your review and looking at others comments, majority of people say that it's worth it if you get it at the price drop..... I'm unfamiliar with the anime, but am willing to give this game a try. having finished Tales of Arise recently and Chrono Cross, I need a fresh RPG to play. I heard that Granblue Fantasy ReLink is coming out this year, too, I will probably get that one when it comes out!
I think my profile pic gives away that I fully intend to buy this game. Hopefully if it does well enough we will get more Fairy Tail games in the future.

I recently played through this game again after I discovered that my save file had been lost when I upgraded to PS5. What stood out to me was just how hollow/shallow and empty the game feels, especially once the GMG are concluded. The first part of the game is entertaining enough but once the Tartaros arc begins, so many key battles and such are relegated to cutscenes that it brings the entire experience down significantly. In particular, revisiting the royal palace in Crocus after its storyline purpose is served perfectly encapsulates the game's problems. An empty room with absolutely nobody/nothing to interact with (since there are no 3D models for Hisui or Arcadios). Also, once the "Expand Magical Foundation" mechanic is unlocked, any remaining incentive for continuing with the postgame quickly vanishes. Once you start maxing out stats with this, there's literally nothing left to do and the DLC is a complete joke. One last thing: compared to a game like AoT 2 in which the rewards you receive continue to get better as you increase the difficulty, no such system exists in Fairy Tail. All rewards for completing missions, battles, etc. remain the same no matter the difficulty, even EXP. So even on the hardest difficulty the only difference is that battles drag on longer, with nothing worthwhile to be gained from the extra time. All in all, this makes for a very tedious, repetitive, boring, and short game.

I wanted an open world Fairy tail game that was not turn based BUT I must say the game does look good! Now I have to play it.

@@kj12351 Yeah the visuals are great! Make sure to wear the default outfit when using dragon force on the dragon slayer characters, otherwise their unique form won't show :)

This game is really fun, tho I would like eng dub because I watched it in english so the voices are not what I'm use to in fairy tail but I can just yell the moves in my mind in their dub voice🤣🤣
@@kj12351 Np and yeah he really is lol. I've seen a lot of people that miss a dubbed version of this game and it's a shame they didn't add it. Was most likely a financial thing though as it's pretty costly to fully dub a game

It's fine for them to start at the beginning of the timeskip. Especially if it saves the devs time and money. But the manga and anime's been done for ages! The devs had no excuse to not go all the way to the end of the story at this point!

Seems like a lot of games made from anime are 1v1 3d fighters (most I've seen) and it's just lazy programming. They are all the same gameplay just with different characters and stories.
This doesn't seem to be one of those at all. I will definitely keep my eye on this game and this review was very helpful.

Wow I am surprised they actually went rpg instead of fighter so many great animes out there and the games we get are the quick and easy fighting games. I wish they would go rpg route instead of fighting.
They did have fairy tail games but in Japan only and they were more fan stuff rather than a good game, this is the first one released outside of Japan that's been on a decent console.
Yeah I watched some gameplay of those and it didn't look that great (not just talking about the graphics). Hope that if this game does well enough we'll get more and better Fairy Tail games!
@@Swrinny Well this first one is decent so I can't imagine them making any bad sequels now, if anything new story can be made since the ending of fairy tail is left open for new story that will never come out in anime anymore so I do hope they come out in games instead with these type turn based rpg elements just better than prequels a bit like one piece pirate warriors just kept getting better on release of sequels.
A new original story for sequels might work too actually. One Piece did it last year with World Seeker and while that game definitely had its flaws, the story was pretty fun!

Will I be missing a lot if I buy the game without watching the anime? I'd love to watch... but 10 years is a lot to watch
The story does a decent job as a standalone so you will be able to follow it. The main thing you'll miss is understanding the characters, their personalities and references to events before the Tenrou Island arc (where this game starts). I'd recommend just watching until episode 117 and then starting for the best experience, but again you can play it even without.
its a good show i recommend watching it, you can probably look up the filler episodes to skip to make it shorter

I'd say atleast watch upto the point the game starts but honestly fairy tails a pretty awesome anime to watch, even most of the filler episodes are pretty decent. Like there literally an episode where all the characters run a marathon but it's a race and somehow that was still a great episode.

That's true, but I think the non-fans will run into knowledge gaps with the references that are being made. And it's harder to properly like/dislike a character when they've never experienced the backstory.
@@Swrinny yea but this game did the backstories similar to Naruto ultimate ninja storm 4 (which I own), the game starts at the final war arc and gives no intel the characters backstory either. There were some characters I never knew about and I got no info on them. At least this game has more description and Easter eggs on them. But if a gamer is interested in them then wiki or watch the anime
@@poggsvandoops94 True, but you're talking about the 4th installment of a game series. Playing through 1-3 of the same series takes you through the whole story and Fairy Tail doesn't have that.
@@Swrinny but still doesn't the game have some of those request referencing some of the early arcs, and even some of those dialgues with the characters. Now I wonder since the fairy tail game has exclusive content that is Canon to the anime, does Naruto ultimate ninja storm have that too??

Looks very much like it's using the Ryza engine and the observations you made about towns seemingly empty/reused NPCs etc are all signs of a low budget and was much the same in Ryza. That didn't stop it being a good game though.

Yeah the budget seems to be the reason for it's limitation. I mean, you can see the devs tried their best to capture the Fairy Tail feeling in the character interactions and they did great with that. It's just a shame to see such a lack of character models (even from side-characters) and certain big fights/characters that are completely skipped over.
You can play it from this point in time and it will make sense. But if you're interested in the story I recommend to at least watch the anime or read the manga until you've passed the "Tenrou Island arc", which is 122 episodes in or 253 chapters. You'll come to appreciate the story and the characters more if you know their backgrounds and what has happened so far.

It's 30 or the 31st depending on your region. Although everyone I've talked on Discord has already received the copy or was able to buy it via Steam/PSN store.

If you boil it down to JUST THE COMBAT (as reviews should be...), is the game worth buying if all I care about is the combat system??
If you're only interested in the combat and not the characters, dialogue, cutscenes & story, I don't think you should get the game for it's full price. In my opinion, a good combat system in a turn-based game requires depth, strategy and more control over positioning and this game doesn't really have that. Teambuilding isn't a thing because the characters don't have any synergy (unision raids are unlocked later but they don't deal that much damage). And stats mainly boil down to HP/ATK/DEF/MP. So, you just build a team of favorite characters and use the same skills simply because they're more powerful and the side effects/status ailments don't compensate enough for the lack of power.
But that said, you may have a different definition of what a good combat system is for a game like this :)
@@Swrinny Good assessment, I need depth, like Ryza or Battle Chasers. This looks a lot like the last Dragon Quest to me, which I thought was a big let down. I'll probably look for this used in the future, thanks for a honest answer.
If you ONLY care about the combat, then the game won't deliver. Best parts are the characters and dialogue, not the combat. I mean, I like it, but as the only thing you're interested in, it will probably leave you dissatisfied, especially for $60.

Frame rate on a normal ps4 drops a lot during attacks and walking around. Needs a patch.
Gonna wait for a sale but I love that this isn't just another cookie cutter anime fighting game. They actually tried to do something a bit different. It would be nice if every single anime game didn't look like they were 10+ years old though. I mean at best these are PS3 graphics. Makes it difficult to justify paying full price for it.
Yeah, like a lot of other anime games this banks hard on the simple fact that it appeals to Fairy Tail Fans which have no other options for a game of the show they love. If it'd had competition, which never happens for these games because of licensing contracts, it could've been a different story
