There's a concurrent storyline between Re:Birth 2, Re:Birth 3 and either version of VII in which Re:Birth 1's timeline is unrelated in it, but starting Re:Birth 2 without already being acquainted with the characters is a bit of a rough introduction. You don't care enough about the goddesses yet to have any form of feeling when you see they're kidnapped. Always great to find a fellow Nep fan. I literally owe Neptunia a lot in my life, and that isn't an exaggeration.
Whoah! Good job! You actually acknowledged the superior lore/story/world of the original original! I also think it's what made Noire the fan favorite character back in the day, she had a much deeper personality. But after that she becomes nothing but a memebait tsundere or something, really quite sad. She'll be my fave character because of the original. I also liked how while the original had some of the mascot enemies like dagoos and pixelvaders, not every single enemy was a cute little game mascot thing. There were some actual monster looking monsters, I mean more than a handful, but most of them actually, and did a great job of making the game more serious without making it too serious like you mentioned. One of my biggest gripes of the series though is that the cpus represent the consoles, and everything in the games is a homage to gaming and gamers essentially. Yet why then are they so poor at providing any remote level of challenge to a gamer. It's like it's balanced towards super casuals. I mean I'm not against casual players wanting to enjoy games too, that's cool. But I wish there was some setting to provide difficulty to both types of gamer (Just not like the origina's difficulty setting which was a joke). I sense the creator of this video likes nepgear =P
I love this series so much. Last summer I binged Rebirth 1-3 and then played V2 on the PS4. I would absolutely recommend the list you gave with how to start. I tell people to start with 1 but you can skip it if you want since it's very grindy and the story is not the best. (The first boss fight in Rebirth 1 is infamous for being the hardest boss fight in the entire series) But once you get past that, it's smooth sailing. I love Rebirth 2 but Rebirth 3 and V2 are my favorites in terms of main entries due to their interesting/funny stories and all the new wacky characters that get introduced. In terms of spin offs, Noire's game is a surprisingly excellent tactics RPG that is great for newcomers to that genre and veterans. I really enjoyed the zombie game too because the story is hilarious. Sega Hard Girls kinda fell flat for me because the combat system is so easy to break and the game is not hard at all. I have not played Producing Perfection and I also didn't like the repetitive/no story of Hyperdimension U: Action Unleashed. I really need to play Cyberdimension because there are a ton of positive reviews for that and I'm super pumped for Super Neptunia RPG.
Good to see these videos out. I wanted to get in HDN back in 2014, ended not doing it because I didnt know where to start. Eventually got into because of a Steam sale in 2016.
Neptunia is a great franchise and I recommend anyone who wants to just have fun to try this series out, the games are always a blast to play through and they have given me another series to enjoy.
Great video, I just started Super Neptunia RPG and Im loving it on my Switch, interested in more of the franchise but there are so many...got yourself a like, a sub and a notificationslll
I'm curious on others' thoughts on Fairy Fencer F. It feels very similar to Victory and the Re;Birth games, with similar dungeon designs, reused textures, and some reused enemy designs. It's got a similar combat mechanic, the same transformation mechanic, and similar humor and storytelling style. The only thing that really sets it apart from the Neptunia games are the characters and story. It feels kind of like a spin-off or side story to me. I'd recommend it to any Neptunia fan if they may have overlooked it.
I just started the series last year but finally got around to actually playing more than an hour of it a week ago. So my first one was Megadimension Neptunia VII. I’m in love with this series and wanna play them all.
Started with Rebirth 2 and loved it. Played Victory and didn't care for the way SP worked or the character's behavior. VII made everything right again and in my opinion is the best game so far. I did eventually go back to play Rebirth 1 and while the story is good I admit the later games have spoiled me mechanically. Looking forward to Super Neptunia RPG.
The anime is indeed great. Not as prity do to less layers per frame, but everything being perfeclty animated more than makes up for it. It is how I introduce my friends to the franchise.
Explicit Tech are you serious? I've never played them but my friend has the series and he showed them to me. I gathered right away that it's about the console war.
Best game series ever. I like how the appearance and personality of the goddesses resemble the hardware ("size") and their players. Noire for example is a loner because PS3 had less online players than XBox 360. Vert on the other hand is a online game junkie. Also there are countless video game references in the dialogues, someone should start a list. Producing Perfection should be ported to PC. I had a lot of fun with it and like it even more than the hack'n'slash spinoffs. Btw, the stage effects have to be timed with the audience to get more points. I played it more for the fun story. I prefer turn based because it's is more relaxing, especially after work.
Man, I gotta say that your channel's contents are just awesome and well made, I am not the type that susbscribes to a channel after one or two typical average videos, but that was not the case here, after your Neptunia Re;birth 2 review took all its time in my "watch later" playlist, I decided to check your channel, and after knowing that you like the Neptunia series, Senran Kagura series and gaming devices, more specifically, after watching the latest PSVita video, it was instant sub. And this "Where to Start: Neptunia" video was just posted surprisingly right _after_ the day I subscribed to YSN!
I got into the series from a friend recommendation. My first Nep Nep game was Rebirth2, which is my personal favorite cause Nepgear is best girl. He said to skip 1 since he said the series really kicks off with the introduction of the sisters. VII is definitely the best one of the canon series and the best spin off is Sega hard girls
I got Rebirth 1 a long while back and got confused and overwhelmed after finding out the whole preferences and canon timelines the series has. This was really helpful!
Thanks for the recommendations and I strongly agree to go with the rebirth games because not they look better but I like the fact that all 3 games of rebirth are actually connected to each other and consistent unlike the originals for example the first original game ain't canon and not connected to mk2, victory, and megadimension though both the originals and remakes are different story wise but considering megadimension uses the same gameplay type the rebirth games have and I'll also be checking out both the original and remake of megadimension because they taken place at the same time though the remake is a retelling but then again I like to think of it as a epilogue of the original version still thanks for the recommendations
Well, don't forget to add "English" in the sentences, because Neptunia players follow at least only one of the 2 voice casts, the English one and the Japanese one, and I believe that the Japanese voice cast hadn't _any_ replacements until now, regardless of the situation (and I already can guess why).
@@17.Dennis Japanese rarely switch VAs, only when death comes around. They recently switched Bulma's VA in Dragon Ball and Professor Oak's VA in Pokémon because the former passed away. It's more common with english and other languages because of bad acting or disagreements.
thanks for your video, i was bored of my traditional RPG and JRPGs, so i want some freshy and fun and nothing more and i think i will have a good time with Neptunia Series, thank you for bring this content with so much love and easy understand even for me as not native English speaker
My first touch with the Neptunia games was the Re;Birth1 and honestly speaking I enjoyed it a lot more than I had initially expected. Something about the wacky humor and the characters and 4th wall breaking was appealing to me. To be honest, I didn't expect there would eventually be so many Neptunia games (including the spin-offs) on pc. If I hadn't got into the series who knows how many years ago then I'm sure all those games would have confused me a lot and this kind of video would most likely had helped me in that situation.
05:51- "The random dongeon monster encounters(which are based on distance traveled) are about as welcome as Zubats in a cave..." That, right there tells me everything I need to know about the dongeons. I know about the Zubats; I know about how bland the differences in each encounter are; I know how the proc system hurts XP and HP more than it helps. Thank you for that brilliant analogy!
Technically, Rebirth 1 is not in the main timeline so to speak. MK2/RB2 was a reboot of the timeline. So if you want to play the games that follow the main plotlines (though the future ones do give enough background to let newbies start in those spots), you would play Rebirth 2, Rebirth 3 then Victory II (whether original or Realize). However Rebirth 1 is an EXCELLENT starting point because it gives a great introduction to the main characters. The other thing to think about in the debate on which Victory II game you play, is whether you want the DLC characters and their own side events. VII R doesn't have the DLC characters.
ty for such an informative video, decided to start checking out the series via re;birth 1 as per your recommendation and loving the game so far it really is a fun experience.
Nice guide video, but you've forgotten two things. RB1 was recently ported to PS4 in Japan as RB1+ and it's highly possible that that will get localized as well as Idea Factory/Compile Heart porting RB2 and 3 to PS4 as well. There's also the brand new Nep game that was announced, which is Super Neptunia RPG or Brave Neptunia in Japan.
Well if they are doing THAT port job I wonder if they'll start porting to the switch as well, I'm fully expecting every nep game to be ps/switch from now on.
for a note, if playing 4GO on the PC version, you can go into UE4's config files and completely unlock the fps. it will make you more vulnerable during online co-op but for single player it can make a huge difference in experience if your monitor is high refresh rate
Neptunia is amazing indeed... BUT I have to say that they did a good job with the second Fairy Fencer game as well as Death;End Request. You should definitely check them out too if you played through the main Neptunia games. (Although they have different characters and are not part of the Neptunia universe... but the same developers and publisher ofc 😊 Death;End story is amazing man. )
I am tired of western RPGs and started looking into JRPG genre recently. I stumbled upon your channel and your "Where To Start" videos are godsend to me. Great content geared toward JRPG fans.
Great video. I only found out yesterday that hyperdimension neptunia re 1 is getting a ps4 port a few days ago. It feels mad. I first played the series with the first game on ps3 back when it was released and while it wasn't perfect I loved it for what it was. I still keep buying the games over and over despite owning them already and having duplicates xD. I have hyperdimension neptunia 1 on ps3, ps vita and pc which I really don't need it that many times. The series I find fantastic. sure it's got fan service but I love the games for its goofy humour and gaming references. what a great series. Thank you for spreading the word on neptunia :).
Hyperdimension Neptunia has the best story Hyperdimension Neptunia MK2 has Nisa and Gust. Which were amazing characters. Hyperdimension Neptunia Victory was the funnest of the originals. Not sure how it compares to RB3 though
Vegito Charmara Tangerines kick ass, though. I still need to play Rebirth 2 to 3, might skip 2 since I heard not much changes, but I loved the story and quirkyness on the original Hyperdimension Neptunia. When I dabbled in Rebirth 1, it felt the same and not same. I enjoyed seeing the differences and still need to complete it, RIP Nisa and Gust.
I agree that Starting with Rebirth 1 is a good idea because of character introductions. Also I would at least play Rebirth 3 at least before going on to VII/VIIR because of some backstory. And I would at least play VII/VIIR before playing Cyberdimension because there is a interesting Easter Egg that people who played VII/VIIR would get. Also another difference between VII and VIIR is the VO/VA because of Noire's VA changing to the one she had in Cyberdimension. I also enjoyed Noire's game it was fun and I liked the various characters. I also liked Superdimension as well and I liked the Time aspect of it because it added a uniqueness to the Nep games. I prefer Megatagmension over Nep U because of improved battle mechanics and overall story. Also about Nepunia Victory I would say that game still holds because there is really no difference between Victory and Rebirth 3 as far as game play goes but the Menu system on the overworld map is different. Unlike mk2 and Rebirth 2 and the Original and Rebirth 1. I watch an LP of the original Neptunia on PS3 and man I didn't like the true ending at all. I preferred the normal ending.
@@altzerz Yes there is. Rebirth 2, Rebirth 3 and Megadimension Neptunia VII are connected story wise while Rebirth 1 is its own standalone game which is a good introduction to the Series and gives you a chance to get familiar with the characters.
@@Fender178 Do you think what you just said is a good play order for chronological story Wise. If so I might try to play it that way rebirth one and then the games you just listed
@@altzerz Yeah. Rebirth 1 is a good starting point for introductions to the characters and their personalities. Then Rebirth 2 and 3 can be played without being confused with the characters. Rebirth 2 and 3 can be played without playing rebirth 1 but I wouldn't recommend that because of being unfamiliar with the characters.
I'm glad you made this video. I heard of the franchise when it came out but never had a PS3 to play it with nor any Sony systems so I didn't play it. I recently saw the anime of Neptunia so that was my actual first experience with Neptunia. It hooked me to the franchise (I was interested from the beginning either way). I find it funny how just recently I found out they made an anime and have most of the games on pc. I plan on buying them all when there is a bundle (friend said he got the games when they had a Neptunia bundle of all the games available on pc) so I will wait for the bundle to come again before I buy the games.
Mostly I didn't know if I should start with the remakes or the original but thanks to this video. I will try the remakes first. Eventually I will play the originals too. I will play them all haha
I never thought seeing someone seriously discussing them, just bought the nepify bundle 9 games for like 24 $ weeks ago, i always play foreign games in their original voice.
I guess that this particular video should have so many more views around this time, because of the Neptunia collaboration event that is happening right now in the international version of the mobile game Azur Lane. And I also guess that this _same_ rise should happen with Azur Lane's global popularity, as this game is considerably new (the international version came up around June or July of this year), and Neptunia, as a game series, is considerably popular worldwide right now.
I got really intrested in neptunia series last summer and started like 3 months ago. I started from the original three. i bought the hyperdimension neptunia hypercollection since i already had ps3 but no ps4 and no decent pc. Now i have played the first game 100% without dlcs and now i am at the end of hyperdimension neptunia mk2 and about to start hyperdimension neptunia victory soon. Unfortunately i still dont have ps4 but i will buy it and all nepunia games for it when the right time comes!
Waifus whom make tons of video game and anime references. Yep that's all I needed to know to love this series. Plutia is best girl and Iris Heart is best waifu by the way.😘
I would recommend playing the games based on their release date. I started with P4G, and playing the persona games before it was really a hassle because the conveniences of the newer games will spoill you.
It doesn't matter with the Persona series so much. It's more about which version of each game you play more than anything. For example the Vita version of 4 is the one to get of that.
I'll be totally honest. I wasn't on board with the whole "game console girls" thing, but hearing you describe it makes it seem so god dang cute! Definitely gonna check one of the mainline games out once I've got the time. :)

Oh I had no idea the series recycles content between games. Thanks, you saved me a few bucks!
Great video, I just started Super Neptunia RPG and Im loving it on my Switch, interested in more of the franchise but there are so many...got yourself a like, a sub and a notificationslll
Keep up the great work man. I hope more people from this niche find your channel!
I’d say start at rebirth1 if you want to get into the series it’s a pretty good game
What to do if you don’t own the Vita?
Lunar Fresh it’s on steam
I got into the neptuni series last week. I started with rebirth 1 and I'm liking this story so far.
I had no idea the characters were based on consoles.
Explicit Tech are you serious? I've never played them but my friend has the series and he showed them to me. I gathered right away that it's about the console war.
Yes. Never played it but have seen rule 34/hentai of it.
But it makes sense, since probably no other Neptunia game got _that much_ into the "console war" concept aside of Neptunia 1 and Neptunia Re;Birth 1.
Explicit Tech Why would you look up hentai of it if you don't know and love the series and characters? That doesn't make any sense to me!
Explicit Tech Looks like you wasn't trying to figure that out because it's really obvious.
I started with OG Victory (PS3.) haven’t had the opportunity to catch up and the series has exploded in popularity since.
Thanks for watching!
I got this is my recommendation feed. Now you got a new subscriber!
0:14 my parents would probably kick me out if my game shelf looked like that
I got into the series from a friend recommendation.
This is a good list of Neptune games
I love this franchise, Neptunia games are incredibly fun.
Majority of the games are on the PS VITA platform soo yeah! Love this series
I just bought all the games that were released on steam
I'm crazy as well
Great overview! As a big Neptunia fan, I think you nailed it :)
Trivia: Vert's voice has changed since MegaNepV2.
Noire's voice has changed since Cyberdimension Neptunia.
wrong Rina sato was Vert's Voice in all games and same for Asami Imai who dub Noire
Vegito Charmara no it’s from MegaNepV2! Play the game!
Well, don't forget to add "English" in the sentences, because Neptunia players follow at least only one of the 2 voice casts, the English one and the Japanese one, and I believe that the Japanese voice cast hadn't _any_ replacements until now, regardless of the situation (and I already can guess why).

Japanese rarely switch VAs, only when death comes around.
"The Neptunia series is lighthearted"
*laughs very loud in Conquest*
It's not even that bad
My first touch with the Neptunia games was the Re;Birth1 and honestly speaking I enjoyed it a lot more than I had initially expected. Something about the wacky humor and the characters and 4th wall breaking was appealing to me. To be honest, I didn't expect there would eventually be so many Neptunia games (including the spin-offs) on pc. If I hadn't got into the series who knows how many years ago then I'm sure all those games would have confused me a lot and this kind of video would most likely had helped me in that situation.
This is the point i realize I've fallen too far into the weeb vortex
Just let it happen
@@kinggeo8545 and you be lost forever
I'd say the same but I've know how far I was for a while...
05:51- "The random dongeon monster encounters(which are based on distance traveled) are about as welcome as Zubats in a cave..."
That, right there tells me everything I need to know about the dongeons.
It's still worth mentioning so that the person is aware of them and might want to wait a bit longer before jumping in.
Holy crap! Thank you, the FPS always annoyed me.
Neptunia is amazing indeed...
BUT I have to say that they did a good job with the second Fairy Fencer game as well as Death;End Request. You should definitely check them out too if you played through the main Neptunia games.
(Although they have different characters and are not part of the Neptunia universe... but the same developers and publisher ofc 😊
Death;End story is amazing man. )
I am tired of western RPGs and started looking into JRPG genre recently. I stumbled upon your channel and your "Where To Start" videos are godsend to me. Great content geared toward JRPG fans.
Just start with whatever you want...
I Don't even know where the story is going anymore...
Gold man, you hit on everything perfectly
The Steam Hyperdimension Neptunia sale happened a couple of weeks ago so... let’s just say I’m stacked on rpgs to play over the summer 😅
I started with rebirth 2 liking it so far, I would've started with 1 but it isn't psTV compatible
"As welcome as Zubats in a cave"
You don't know how relatable this is.
. _ .
Starting at the originals !! That's the only way.
Hyperdimension Neptunia has the best story
Hyperdimension Neptunia MK2 has Nisa and Gust. Which were amazing characters.
Hyperdimension Neptunia Victory was the funnest of the originals. Not sure how it compares to RB3 though
That is the Right Way!
Great video, didn't expect such quality, dropping a sub for sure
“It’s a fresh of breath air”
Pretty much everything new players need to know, cool video !
Is there a chronological order for these games like story wise?
@@Fender178 ok thx
My friend showed me this game yesterday...
I had purchased it before he even stopped playing
Omg I had no idea that the sisters are based on handhelds. No wonder why very never got a sister. Poor Vert
Was looking to get into this series and this video was super helpful so thanks
Those jiggle physics though.
#NepNepIsBestCPU
She’s is adorkable and adorable and I love her for it 🙂😊👍
Anyways, great video! Keep up the great work 👍
This is the type of series that will get me put on a list.
Broccoli is the spawn of satan and will NEVER *EVER* replace Gust.
I never thought seeing someone seriously discussing them, just bought the nepify bundle 9 games for like 24 $ weeks ago, i always play foreign games in their original voice.
Thanks for the Vid!
Proud Neptunia fan good job with the explanation man 😎👍🏾
I guess that this particular video should have so many more views around this time, because of the Neptunia collaboration event that is happening right now in the international version of the mobile game Azur Lane.
2:42 since when was the ds so cute? xD
Ive played neptunia since its first ps3 game. I love everything about them all. Noire is my goddess
Waifus whom make tons of video game and anime references. Yep that's all I needed to know to love this series. Plutia is best girl and Iris Heart is best waifu by the way.😘
Cuzeg Spiked Ah you're one of culture I see.
Iris heart best girll

Please please please PPLEASE do a where to start on the persona series
Persona 3
Just play one without thinking about it, the order really doesn't matter because the games don't have any story related stuff in common
Any of them, it doesn't matter
I would recommend playing the games based on their release date. I started with P4G, and playing the persona games before it was really a hassle because the conveniences of the newer games will spoill you.
It doesn't matter with the Persona series so much. It's more about which version of each game you play more than anything. For example the Vita version of 4 is the one to get of that.
Very well made video, I appreciate it a lot friend

Whoa whoa don’t expect us to do too much at once, my dude!
Thanks for this video it was really helpful in deciding which game to get
Lol I love how u upload this after my video discussing the topic already picked up 16k views...
I'll be totally honest. I wasn't on board with the whole "game console girls" thing, but hearing you describe it makes it seem so god dang cute! Definitely gonna check one of the mainline games out once I've got the time. :)
