When Gatsby sees Daisy for the first time is mesmerising. The music, the nervousness, the deep feelings; everything about this scene I love. Leo encapsulated Gatsby's character so well.
nahh, the actors were great, the director’s choice of music and filming style was terrible. This is supposed to be a really awkward and intense scene in the book. He should not have had any music playing, it should have been silent. Silence is uncomfortable and therefore awkward, it would have made this scene a lot better if the director went with the book, instead of trying to romanticize Gatsby’s and Daisy’s relationship. Because in reality, Gatsby is very creepy, obsessive and weird towards Daisy
If only love were that grand in this day and age and we all had higher aspirations as these people and class .... Donald would definitely not be President lol. Jk.
@@santo2679 Silence might have read wrong. If you didn't want music some of Gatsby's thoughts and the ambient rain noise would have been good instead. This type of love feeling is mad and not to many people actually experience it. You can't go a day without thinking of that person, and when you see that person after not seeing them for years, and just communicating by letters/phone, it's like the universe flipped upside down and you'll full of anxiety and love until you eventually calm down after some awkward slow talk on both sides and then the balls starts rolling and you can only hope that the relationship blossoms into something more defined instead of constantly being lost in thoughts of hope.
Well it's not like he was TRYING to be, Gatsby wanted him there so it's more like he was forced to be in that awkward situation. He was just being polite, it's not like he was trying to be a cockblock or something lol
For me one of the best scene in the movie is when Nick arrives in the cab at late evening, and Gatsby is waiting for him. When he says he is going to invite daisy for tea Jay wants to give him a chance make some extra money in gratitude for his help Nick says it's just a favor, and he is happy to do it. You can see how Gatsby didn't know what to say, I think for all those years when he's climbing to the top he met people who care only about his money and in this moment he realize that Nick is something else than the rest of this rotten crowd, he is a really good man and his truly friend
The part where Gatsby is surprised when Nick tells him that "Daisy is embarrassed too" really shows to me how much he idealizes her, that it couldn't even occur to him that she could be ashamed or even have negative feelings. He's so thoroughly convinced the awkward situation is all because of him that he doesn't event think as to what could be going on in her mind because he's so fixated on crafting the perfect beautiful scenario to impress her.
That's why I like of Edmond Dantes who simply instead of fivent trapped in love for Mercedes in The Count of Monte Cristo, he forgets her and manages to love another woman, haydee. Unfortunately the film did not do justice to edmond idealizing a relationship that in the novel no longer existed. He did not get stuck in love for mercedes. Jay gatsby preferred to be stuck in the past as Heathcliff of Whutehinr Heights with an unrequited or lost love.
To go on.. another thing i noticed, at 1:29 you can see Gatsby take in a deep breath to say something from all his excitement and nervousness. BUT he maintains his gentleman like composure and his manners to allow her to speak FIRST. You can see her taking a deep breath right after but can't find the words to say to her long lost love... In the Tea scene notice how Gatsby lets Daisy drink first before he continues. He always puts her first..
KeleentProductions Daisy was just part of the plan Gatsby had for his life. She was a fantasy to him. Not a real flawed human being that could hurt or reject him.
KeleentProductions Daisy was nothing to Gatsby except a trophy, a goal to get. He didn't really love her, just the idea that having her would mean that he was successful enough to get a girl of that caliber
+Erica Eng We watched this in class, the first thing everyone said "Oh, s*** it's Peter Parker." Someone else was like "He's [Gatsby] saved this time!" I couldn't even think Peter Parker, I spoke first and said "Dat's da spider Dude!!" 10th grade.
The fact that Gatsby is still dressed up to his sharpest defying the fact that he had an all-night party the day before, just proves how disciplined he is. While the silver shirts and shiny cufflinks are not for everyone, he makes a good point with this clothing in this scene: never dress below what is expected of you.
No, what is expected of you exactly, their clothes are made to telegraph their wealth. I think for Gatsby he never dresses less than what he expects and wants for himself. He's a self-made man and he's trying to copy the ways of the rich but he doesn't quite fit in that world and he isn't quite accepted.
1:25 We had to analyze this scene in my AP Lit class. Its significant because even though hes amassed a fortune and fine tuned himself to be this impeccable gentlemen, the moment he has been waiting for for 5 years has finally come, and he stands before her soaking wet with tears in his eyes, scared. For that one moment, he was returned to his loving boyish innocence, with nothing but his love.
Him dropping the clock is a symbol. He tries to control time because he's a control freak. When he has his chance to get what he wants (Daisy) he knocks the clock over, symbolizing that you can't control time
OH I thought the clock stopped/dropped because it shows how he can never go back in time to be on the past with her 5 years ago... He keeps saying how he can go back in time, but the symbol of that clock shows that he can't go back from the past
I swear! If Leo D. doesn't get an Oscar for his next film, I will never pay to see another movie again!!! Seriously!!! In Django, he literally bleed his own blood in the dinning room scene, Inception, he did his own stunts, In Titanic, he actually drew that charcoal nude sketch himself (So I've heard)! Nate Dawg Yea, James Cameron is the artist, but nevertheless, Leonardo has done so many memorable characters, and put a lot of heart and soul in his acting, it's ridiculous they haven't given him an Oscar for his best works. Now when he gets it eventually, it will feel as though they gave it to him because of obligation more than anything. Just shows the Oscars are more about popularity contests than artistic merit. Such a beautiful scene. Where Gatsby pulls himself back to confront his the past and see the woman he loves. It's so romantic how he comes out of the rain and then they see each other again.

The truth is when a guy loves a girl to the point that , the girl can make him or break him,the girl most of the time doesn't respect the guy when she can sense that she has a lot of power over the guy. When a girl becomes indispensable for a guy, he starts acting desperate, he loses it and the girl loses respect for the guy. As Carl Jung said, the guy is like clay in her hands.
alessandra ruiz It's a slightly naive POV. gatsby's love for daisy wasn't just about feelings. He was fixated on her and his desire for her was more twisted. Although he honestly felt he loved her to death, there was something fundamentally flawed about his desire for Daisy. Daisy was a coward in some ways herself for continuing to be with a man who regularly cheats on her even though she may have wanted exclusivity.
I think that line did imply that she has an ego, but she was half kidding too. She was mostly trying to make sense of that big romantic but strange gesture
+PopTartsAndCinemax I think you're right about Mulligan's portrayal, but i completely disagree with the rest of your comment. I thought it was impossible to miss the sincerity of love in the way she looks at Gatsby alone. It seems undeniable that Daisy loves him to me. In my opinion the paradox of Daisy is that as vain as she is, she's ultimately lacking altogether in self-confidence. She knows she's beautiful and charming, and there's no doubt she takes great pride in her affect on people. But that's because her beauty is the one thing she has to be confident in. The way I interpret the character is that she's been taught all her life that her only worth is in her pretty face, and that she has no intelligence or value otherwise. This is what she meant by the "beautiful little fool line," because in this era the pretty bimbo was not only the ideal role women were supposed to play, but really the only one. Because Daisy even sees herself as worthless, she feels completely reliant on the
+PopTartsAndCinemax men in her life. In fact she doesn't feel she can make any real decisions whatsoever; this is why she will never leave Tom for Gatsby. Carey Mulligan herself describes her interpretation of Daisy as someone who needs to be move. She's not strong or secure enough to make a big choice, so she lets both Tom and Gatsby sweep her along to whatever they want her to do and becomes whoever they want her to be.
+PopTartsAndCinemax That is true, I'm not saying she's a great person. But I don't like when people make her out to be the villain of the story and Gatsby to be some romantic white knight. Gatsby didn't live Daisy, he valued her like he would a possession. That's not even an inference, it's states quite plainly in the novel that the interests of other men "increased her worth in his eyes." In my opinion every character in the story is equally awful, except for Tom who is naturally the most despicable person, and Jordan who ironically is a well-known cheat but is still the most honest person. Nick himself is arrogant, judgmental, and ultimately very two faced since he hates the Buchanans but still pretends to be their friend. He's also guilty of idolizing a delusional man and buying into his ridiculous notions, not to mention being self righteous. Gatsby uses Nick blatantly, and obsesses over possessing Daisy, which many people seem to disturbingly mistake for love.
+PopTartsAndCinemax so yeah that line is true. But I think it's meant to be applied to every character because they're all selfish and cruel to each other
I love the fact that many of Leo's characters are men from the 20's/50's and so on, the way he acts/dresses makes him really different from other actors. Also the fact that he doesnt talk that much about his private life as a man really helps getting into his characters.
Daisy wasnt a coward. Gatsby is pathetic, Fitzgerald wrote him that way purposelly. He grasps exhaustingly at the past and tries anything to rebuild it. He cant move forward and Daisy did not want to live her life like that
I absolutely love this movie and the character of Gatsby is so touching. And i think that scene is my favorite , this eye contact that seems to last forever
I was scrolling through the comments then had to stop be because the music at 1:30 grabbed my attention and I couldn't pull my eyes away from them seeing each other for the first time in 5 years
It's horrible because the garden does look wonderful and despite the awkwardness all I can think of is "Anyone going to eat any of that?" I just want to walk in, pile the lot of them in my bag, say "So lovely to see you again Nick, we really must do this more often" and walk out.
I wish I was Gatsby The lifestyle The freedom The way you look at someone you love that makes your whole world freeze as if time just stops and your heart skips several beats.
The scene where they first seen eachother in 5 years the silence is golden and melts my heart. You hear them both breath and they are speechless he loves his daisy so much! breath taking! this part!
zombiesnyder13 he's just trying to rebuild the past..at the same moment, the clock broke which parallels his sense of trying to fix or mend the time that's passed between them.
I love the music in this scene! When he comes to the door and faces Daisy for the first time that's my favorite part in the entire movie the music is spectacular it's heartbreaking and beautiful.
So beautiful. I love this scene so much. In the version from the 70's they didn't do the scene very well and it made me kind of annoyed because it's my favourite part in the book too. And I love how Gatsby like calls out for Nick when he says he's going into town. I love Leo, amazing actor. They all are.
One of my favorite lines in this movie is Daisy's little "He is in love with me". For some reason, I find it hilarious, mixed with her mannerisms and accent. All the actors, Leo and Carey Mulligan especially, did a phenomenal job.
Every time the music for "young and beautiful " came on (which happened quite frequently ) I got the chills and started singing right on the spot hahaha. Loved all the different ways it was showcased in the film.
It's rare to see Leo do vulnerable and appear completely at the mercy of the person he faces. Certain actors come to mind; Anthony Hopkins, Tilda Swinton, Cate Blanchett, Sam Shephard, Ryan Gosling, Kate and Rooney Mara, John Wayne, Robert Redford, Clint Eastwood, Robert Mitchum, Richard Burton, Paul Newman, Humphrey Bogart, Steve Mcqueen, De Niro, Mia Wachowski, Oscar Issac, Matthew Goode, Alexander Skarsgard, Joaquin Phoenix, Brad Pitt, Johnny Depp. As individuals they seem too nonchalant, self-possessed, remote and certain about themselves to appear vulnerable even as an act. There is no reading them. As a result they come across as pure performers who as ironical as it sounds are in a way detached even flippant about the perception of their performance. They elicit admiration, desire, envy, fear rather than empathy. Watching them perform is like witnessing a furtive act of nature. At no point will they let you in or share the position regarding their character. Love it!
I'm reading this book for my English class and we just finished reading chapter 5 today and I fell in love so I needed to watch this scene because this part is so perfect in both versions 😍
my love for Leo intensified when I watched this movie. this has to be one of my favorite movies because of how intense the emotions are but very limited words are said. plus how adorable he looked when he came to the door soaking wet. ;)
Rereading this book
Damn I really never thought of it this way. Insightful reading right there.
It just meant he was anxious
The clock is a symbol of Gatsby trying to repair the time he lost with Daisy.
+taylorswizzzle In the book he never really bumps it over he kind of just knocks into it.
Either way, it portrays the notion of wanting to fix the time lost with Daisy.

But I think it's meant to be applied to every character because they're all selfish and cruel to each other
He did super good in this movie I ain't going lie, also this guy needs a Oscar for this performance seriously.
I love the fact that many of Leo's characters are men from the 20's/50's and so on, the way he acts/dresses makes him really different from other actors.
Also the fact that he doesnt talk that much about his private life as a man really helps getting into his characters.
Most romantic scene ever. Too bad Daisy had to be such a coward in the end.
word
Daisy wasnt a coward. Gatsby is pathetic, Fitzgerald wrote him that way purposelly. He grasps exhaustingly at the past and tries anything to rebuild it. He cant move forward and Daisy did not want to live her life like that
Daisy was being realistic, cowardly perhaps, but realistic for someone in her position, I would choose Jay but I'm not her
love this scene, can't stop watching it again and again
I absolutely love this movie and the character of Gatsby is so touching. And i think that scene is my favorite , this eye contact that seems to last forever
I was scrolling through the comments then had to stop be because the music at 1:30 grabbed my attention and I couldn't pull my eyes away from them seeing each other for the first time in 5 years
+Rebecca Abel do you know song's name?
+Flavio Rossi its two minutes to four and reunited
+Flavio Rossi Its the instrumental for Lana Del Rey's 'Young and Beautiful' from the movie soundtrack (:
This one of my favorites. I had to watch this movie back to back just to put it all together and still see something new everytime I watch it.
Nick, the ultimate third wheeler.
It's horrible because the garden does look wonderful and despite the awkwardness all I can think of is "Anyone going to eat any of that?" I just want to walk in, pile the lot of them in my bag, say "So lovely to see you again Nick, we really must do this more often" and walk out.
It took everything in me not to scream like a little girl when we were watching this in my English class
"...and he set back the clock..."
You always wear the nicest suits Mr. Gatsby.
I wish I was Gatsby
The lifestyle
The freedom
The way you look at someone you love that makes your whole world freeze as if time just stops and your heart skips several beats.
The scene where they first seen eachother in 5 years the silence is golden and melts my heart. You hear them both breath and they are speechless he loves his daisy so much! breath taking! this part!
2:38 SYMBOLISM AAAHHHH
***** I'm sorry, but it means?
zombiesnyder13 he's just trying to rebuild the past..at the same moment, the clock broke which parallels his sense of trying to fix or mend the time that's passed between them.
*****
Nice, very clever. Good thinking
I love the music in this scene! When he comes to the door and faces Daisy for the first time that's my favorite part in the entire movie the music is spectacular it's heartbreaking and beautiful.
Haven't even seen the film but watching the moment they see each other for the first time bought me to tears. Too real. A mesmerising performance
One of the best scenes ever. THe awkwardness the tension the thousands words a breath can say. All of this is so great
So beautiful. I love this scene so much. In the version from the 70's they didn't do the scene very well and it made me kind of annoyed because it's my favourite part in the book too. And I love how Gatsby like calls out for Nick when he says he's going into town. I love Leo, amazing actor. They all are.
No she doesn't have a mental problem. I think its kind of just the way they talked, the style and things like that.
The book was really good. I recommend you read it before watching the film.
No problem. :) Hope you like to book and movie.
***** The book is fantastic you will love it.
I thought the scene is the 70's version was great, the way she first sees him in the mirror and the score starts up.
One of my favorite lines in this movie is Daisy's little "He is in love with me". For some reason, I find it hilarious, mixed with her mannerisms and accent. All the actors, Leo and Carey Mulligan especially, did a phenomenal job.
Leonardo Dicabrio being Gatsby is the greatest thing I've seen! I have to see this movie!
soooo amazing thanks for putting this up
Every time the music for "young and beautiful " came on (which happened quite frequently ) I got the chills and started singing right on the spot hahaha. Loved all the different ways it was showcased in the film.
Nick is prolly the greatest third wheel, friend, and wingman ever 🤣🤣😅
this is a great scene, great acting, great music, great directing, great gatsby!
Love it!
Baz luhrman is a genius. Perfect timing, scenery, directing and the perfect selection for acting
2:21 Daisy you can have a macaroon :) stop looking at it :P hahhaa
lmao i didnt notice this
I loved the movie and this is one of my most favorite scenes. It's dang near on loop at my house! ;)
5 years later and I'm still actually in love with Nick.. So cute and dreamy... and that outfit is on point !
The awkwardness of being truly in love is cute and divine!!
3:44 "I'll be right back !" Tobey (Nick) is adorable :p
my favorite scene EVER!
This is my favorite scene in the whole movie
mine too
the part where he opens the window takes my breath away. the sky goes so well with his white suit
Young and Beautiful is so wonderful in all its forms for this
Carey Mulligan is beautiful
The 20s was such a beautiful time
,
This scene got me teary eyed!! The way they looked at each other! Oh my3 Leo was the Perfect Gatsby!
Leonardo Di Caprio was the best person to play Gatbsy. This movie is truly one of my favorites.
"That's funny?"
"What's funny?"
"Pizza time."
"I would like to have the grass cut"
That piece...
Leo is such a wonderful actor... it was so cute that he was so extremely nervous
I'm reading this book for my English class and we just finished reading chapter 5 today and I fell in love so I needed to watch this scene because this part is so perfect in both versions 😍
"Tea!"
Visually stunning
I can watch it 1000000 times
Makes me cry every time 😭
"I just have to pop into town"
*TOWN?*
i’m reading this chapter rn for my english class and just had to rewatch it 😍
aahh, amazing. i like the way Nick speking with Gatsby - for him he isn't better than others 😌
The soundtrack of this movie is a fucking masterclass! It is so powerful in the correct places, It's almost like revisiting King Kong! :)
my love for Leo intensified when I watched this movie.
this has to be one of my favorite movies because of how intense the emotions are but very limited words are said.
plus how adorable he looked when he came to the door soaking wet. ;)
