Midwest native Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire) arrives in 1922 New York in search of the American dream. Jordan was by far the most interesting person in this entire story. She's a self made woman and has her finger on the pulse of everything going on but never allows it to affect her personally.

If they were natural matching pearls it could be way more expensive today. cultured pearls were invented twenty years before Daisy was a debutante and it was still an expensive propriety thing. If they were cultured pearls, they would fetch far less today.
Not that I have an Economics degree but I think inflation has grown more than 15 fold since 1919. Gold was about $20 an ounce back then.

The fact that everything looks saturated and CG-like almost helps to capture the essence of the book and Fitzgerald's overall message: it is has this shiny, glossy sheen with bright lights and vivid colours that is almost dreamlike on the surface, beautiful to look at (and to listen to), but going deeper the actual story is tragic with unlikable characters and an unhappy ending. It's almost like they've put the mood of the book into visual terms: it looks unrealistic...because the mood of wealth and brightness tied to the American Dream in the 1920s was unrealistic.
This film was severely underrated and is, IMO, the best adaptation of the novel possible.
Perfectly said. People act like the look of the cgi was an accident or mistake but it was most definitely intentional.

Baz was the best person to direct this adaptation. You want more proof? Romeo & Juliet (1996) with a young Leo and Moulin Rouge (2001)
The scene of her breaking the string of pearls was actually really powerful. In the book she could never give up the lifestyle Tom provided to be with someone like Gatsby who was considered 'new money' and she was always unable to express her true emotions and would retreat back into the life of prestige and luxury she grew up in. Except, in this one clip when she lashed out and pearls went flying everywhere it essentially showed her finally putting love before anything else, and lashing out about how she feels. I know that in the end she turned on Gatsby but I think at one point their love was definitely real because she was even willing to give up the wealth that would be handed to her, which is what destroying the necklace represented.
and then the necklace being put back together and worn by her again signifies her ultimate bond to that old money lifestyle :0 woah

the real gag? Real pearl necklaces have knots between each pearl, making the necklace much easier to fix if broken, and making it so the pearls would never scatter all over. The way in which the necklace breaks here insinuates the $350,00 necklace was made of plastic beads, and not in fact, true pearls.
Matt Libra hmm, interesting. Maybe the fake pearl necklace is representing Daisy’s artificial and shallow mindset about love and wealth. Or maybe Tom winning Daisy with money, but not by love. And Daisy thought the necklace was authentic pearls.
The editing of this film is so bizarre in the best possible way.

Though he did give people the benefit of the doubt, his passiveness towards all of the indecency in the lives of his "friends" around him, I think, makes him a little guilty in a way. He was sucked into the corrupt, but glamorous game/lifestyle of the rich and famous, and sort of let everything play out as it did without much obligation for intervention. Indulging in the gossip I think in a way makes him a bit of a snake.
@@stephenmccarthy2517 I think you're kind of right, his moral code of holding back judgment turned on him in that sense, however towards the end of the book he openly displayed his disdain towards the Buchanans. That was his whole character arc.

That’s the exact reason Nick liked and hated her at the same time. He specifically mentioned when she was lent a car, let it out in the rain to get drenched and the proceeded to say it wasn’t her. I don’t think she was believed , just no one intruded either because they did not want to get involved due to getting on her bad side or held no regard because it wasn’t their car.

She was so perfectly cast, the way she speaks and the way she moves is so beautiful. She was my favorite character in the book too.

Because this was a flashback, it's not supposed to look real....
because there was a GREEN SCREEN to RECREATE many DETAILS AND Layouts, just like the entire New York city times Square from 20s, it is architectonical and by photos of that time, pretty accurate.
Its all intentional to make everything seem larger than life. It worked much better in 3D on the big screen

The whole movie was pretty much heavily cgi to recreate that vintage look from the early 1900s. I remember watching this movie and also wondering why it looked like a fancy video game.

I spent the whole movie wishing I could just hang out with Jordan and talk about everyone else. Nick screwed up big time when he let her get away.
Lurklen Actually, in the book she’s regarded as manipulative, shallow, and very selfish. She’s also a liar, and nick over the course of the book realizes all of this. She’s also engaged to another man throughout the whole thing but doesn’t let him know till the end of the book. I think this version is toned down from the book, and even watching now I still love her character, but I think Nick made the best choice.
@@isabellagriffis3061 even in this movie, she comes across as unconcerned, detached, and generally apathetic to most of the horrible events transpiring around her (a trait implied to have been brought on about by her obscene wealth and privileged lifestyle) , which was one of the main reasons why Nick didnt want to be with her in the novel as well.
Now hold on. Nick had a rumor follow him all the way from Chicago to Daisy and Tom that Nick was supposed to marry the girl he "didn't quite break it off with" yet. Everyone has _something_ to lie about, I don't care who you are.
@@TrelliessRose Exactly, he's not exactly innocent. Nick is prone to the same self delusion of his aloofness from the situation as anyone else, and in fact that's one of the things Jordan likes about him, until it isn't. I like Jordan because she's pretty honest about what you can expect, it's only when she starts to really feel something she gets hurt. She's slightly more real about how false everything in their lives is.
She’s shallow in the books
Elizabeth Debicki stole the whole movie for me. The way she narrates the story and her voice, her mannerisims, grace, the way she carries herself... she was the only character who actually looks from that era by the acting.

This scene has more personality than 99% of films made today.
It just feels too busy and crowded to me.
That's just simply not true. There are plenty, plenty of great films coming out today. You just need to watch them. My favorite film in recent memory would probably be Roma. The new Joker movie also looks like it's going to be pretty good. Watch those.
The director, Baz Luhrmann, has cited Italian-style grand opera has one of his influences, which are known to be very lavish. He also did a commercial with Nicole Kidman for Chanel in this style.

As much as the broken pearl necklace scene was powerful, it makes me laugh because real pearl necklaces have knots in between pearls as to not ruin them when they rub together, so they wouldn’t have all fallen off like that. Obviously it was for cinematography but I like to think that our Tommy-boy here was a total cheapskate liar 🤡

$350,000 is not cheap even for todays money. If he spent that much money and it was fake that meant someone really did rip him off BIG time.
This lady should be the woman Gatsby falling in love with, not Daisy.
Mien Yue She is very beautiful but Jordan’s character is cold, distant and frivolous. This actress looks exactly how I imagined her while reading the book before the movie was released, . She shows a little humanity at the beginning but she always betrays that and chooses the superficiality of party life. Daisy, in the other hand, seems warm, pretty’s and innocent, almost like a child, although she betrays Gatsby at the end, just like everybody else, except for Nick who was the only one who cared for his friend.
Nick should be the one Gatsby falls in love with, there, I said it 🤷♀️

The debate on weather or not Daisy loved Gatsby is interesting, I however think she did. I think she's smarter than we think and than she'd like to be. Smart enough to know that for a woman in this time life is just easier if you follow "the rules". Everybody talks about how sad it was that Jay couldnt have Daisy even though he loves her so much, but it hurts Daisy too. She knows that he loved her and she DEFINITELY loved him. He was real in a world of fake rich people getting drunk to solve their problems and partying because they have gone to far to remove the glass which is pain that rests on the beds that they have made and shall forever sleep in. Daisy loved Gatsby
Yes, that's why she was crying when Gatsby was throwing the linens at her. At that moment, she knew she could've had both fortune and love. She's been with Tom for so long that she feels secure being where she's at, and that's why she was scared to get a divorce. It's like a relationship where the guy/girl doesn't feel comfortable living together even though they've been together for years because the individual is so use to living by him/herself. Change is hard when you adapt too much within that time period.
I love how in the beginning, Jordan Baker was eavesdropping on Daisy and Tom's argument and here she wants Nick to lower his voice so (Daisy's history and) her own business doesn't get out in the open.
I can sympathize with Gatsby for his desire to impress Daisy. He hosts some of the most extravagant parties at his mansion, acquired a vast fortune, and expanded his reputation just to have a shot at getting back Daisy. It is inspiring yet tragic because his success is merely based on his desire to get Daisy. Daisy is his reason to gain a fortune and to live his hedonistic lifestyle. Without her, he will have no reason to continue with his success.
I too did a lot to have a shot at getting a girl I was infatuated with by studying hard in school, later going to a top tier university, buying a luxury car, learned to play guitar, and lived a wild life just to impress her. Just like Gatsby, I grew up from a low income background and the girl I was interested in was being groomed to be among the top students in our district (possibly the county) and she was higher in the social rankings than I was. Once I blew my chance with her during college, I decided to continue on with my life and no longer made her my only reason to continue improving my life. Too bad for Gatsby, he couldn't let go Daisy within those 5 years otherwise, he would have had a better life.
Man, from the looks of it, you don't just sympathize with Gatsby.

The tragedy of this book.
The production design and CG, color palettes, color coordination, props and graphics, accurate costumes and makeup! It's all breathtaking and infinitely detailed. Catherine Martin really did an incredible job. Everything looks so brilliantly thought and thoroughly researched. Probably one of, if not the best film to visually, artistically and intimately portray 1920s New York, or even the 20s style in general. Two Oscars well deserved for her design work.
Edit: The design team actually looked through fashion magazines from the time including satirical illustrations of people from Vanity Fair to visually inspire each one of Gatsby's partygoers.

I NEED to read this book now. Only then will I be able to decide if DiCaprio is better than Robert Redford as Gatsby.
DiCaprio is fine as an actor playing young men. He IS a young man. At least he speaks like one.
But playing Howard Hughes? Incredibly unbelievable. And not in a good way.
If Fitzgerald wrote the part of Gatsby for a man-child, than yes, DiCaprio's your guy. But if he didn't, than Redford is better. We'll see.

1:41 Unrealistic. Pearls are strung with knots between each bead and its neighbors specifically so that if the strand breaks that only one bead can be lost on the floor and that a scene like this cannot take place.

The first dialogue sequence is terribly edited. You don’t have to cut to a close up every time someone speaks, and the constant cuts back and forth are enough to make some sick. Reliance on closeups in dialogue is a huge problem in modern filmmaking.
