It may just be too obvious for Raissa to bother to mention it, but I think Daisy's bracelet connected to the ring is supposed to symbolize how she feels shackled to her husband. Even if that ring isn't supposed to be her marriage ring
Yes! Just like the $350 THOUSAND dollars worth of pearls (in 1920s money, I looked it up, today it would cost over $5 million) he gave her for their wedding--that she destroyed because once she knew Gatsby was still alive, they became a burden. Also, these bracelets highlight the fact that she's not wearing her wedding ring. Yet she's showing up to an event with her husband. It speaks volumes about how miserable she is with Tom.
I’d say if people want to see a more historically accurate version to check out the 1974 adaptation. I’m okay with the modernisation of the outfits, but generally just not a fan of a lot of the designs of the women’s costumes. I do appreciate how they captured the spirit of the ‘20’s, and little Easter eggs like the Arrow Collar Man.
Maybe it is not the most accurate, but it is the one of the best adaptations imo, it makes you feel the story and the exaggeration of the characters’ lives, same for the music, that is more “modernised” that actual jazz music. There aren’t many good adaptations out there, but this was definitely a good one.
Finally! An episode about The Great Gatsby!! I’ve been waiting for this to happen. I’d love to see Raissa’s fashion reviews of: - Babylon - Elvis - Atonement
Id like to point out a slight error, the word four-in-hand doesnt mean the necktie as a whole, but just refers to the type of knot that is used on a necktie. The modern necktie that is used both today and back in the 20s is called a “Langsdorf” tie and can be knotted in many different ways, where four-in-hand is one of the methods.
Even though a lot of the fashion isn’t historically accurate, I do really like the fashion especially Daisy’s wardrobe even though she isn’t my favorite character. She did wear some really pretty dresses and her short hair went really well with the clothes.
I can't imagine anyone but Leo for this role. There may be more good looking and younger actors but he embodied it well. The rest if the cast including minor characters were perfectly cast as well.
"The 1920s continue to be present in the 2020s with the resurgence of Gatsby-inspired fashions and Jazz Age parties." So what you're saying is... you CAN repeat the past?
Hollywood and costume stores have really glamorized the 20s by changing the entire silhouette and making it seem like everyone wore fringe and dark lipstick like they were movie stars lol. Personally I’d take 30s fashion over 20s anyday- much more attractive and modern. Also I’d wish they had shown Jordan in pants!!!
I wish they delved a little deeper into the other characters as well. I'm particularly interested in Nick's outfits, especially the one he wears on his first visit to Gatsby's.
At ~2:00 the shirt is described as a "white button down shirt ...." I think, correctly described, it would be a button up shirt. There are no apparent buttons to fasten the collar down.
Omg yes, we love Raissa. The movie was a bit all over the place but I love Leo and will watch anything he's in. Catherine Martin's costumes are always fun to look at.
Yep, was thinking during this vid that my own chest and hourglass figure would definitely not have fit the 20s - but I would've been just fine the decade before. lol
You are right the suit looks too modern for the 1920s, although the film's intention was not to make an exact period piece given the other modernized updates. Unfortunately Brooks Brothers no longer makes jackets like those worn in the 1920s so it wasn't exactly the best costumer (though I'm sure it was a hit for Brooks as an ad campaign). Their modern jackets in the film are very stiff looking compared to the relaxed jackets of the 1920s. Look at the shoulders and armholes in the film. No leisure jacket had that much stiffness or padding the in 1920s given these were sporting outfits that folks wore to relax.
I love these! ❤️ I wish more time had been spent on Gatsbys hair, other accessories he might have worn and such. Also, I miss hearing about the undergarments. I think this was about the time the bra was invented. I would have liked to hear about that!
I love everything about this movie! The music, the colors, the looks and most importantly story - it was the first movie I've seen to move something in me, to feel something - that's how perfect the cast was❤❤❤
She failed to mention the British striped ties were , and are, usually called Regimental Ties as the different colors and pattern separation would show which military unit a man served in. In the US, they were/are called College Ties as some elite universities have a particular tie stripe or pattern.
Lots of Ruffles and modern Couture! Nothing to do with Summer 1922, basically, and it's okay by me? Baz Luhrmann, Catherine Martin and Miuccia Prada clearly wanted to create a mood of crazed debauchery, and they succeeded! On the subject of Carey Mulligan as Daisy Buchanan: I felt she was miscast. I had no Idea why Jay was so fixated on this girl, she was a total drip! Maybe that was the point? IDK!
Even if it’s not amazingly accurate, I still really love the look of this film, and it suits the bombastic style of Lurhmann’s directing, not to mention how the modernisation of fashion works well with the modern style of music.
Baz Luhrman does not do "costume accuracy" necessarily, if at all. He does what he thinks is best for his version, and so.etimes its accurate and sometimes it is complete fantasy...anyone who thinks to judge his films on accuracy doesn't know Baz...
5.20 An Oxford man would call what you refer to as a vest a waistcoat. A vest is an undergarment. The England football manager Gareth Southgate famously wore a waistcoat on the touch line of the 2018 World Cup.
Another interesting aspect of custom design is how it communicates the stories trajectory and characters emotional arch. But that’s another video by a different expert.
I wish they didn’t script this quite so much. It all feels very stilted when it doesn’t have to be. Clearly the historian is an interesting expert to have. Forcing her to stare into a camera and stick to a script makes for an uncomfortable video.
His was pretty close but things like the fit and shoe reversal are what's off and I'd imagine, especially the fit would be pretty noticeable . Daisy's was the most off and probably drags down the whole accuracy rating for the movie.
sorry but the fashion houses totally missed on the womens gowns. no linear bugle beads, crystals were not much used and would not have been colored and would have been geometric. Prada? really? should have gone to channel for historical accuracy. Glad I didnt bother with the movie.

I adore the styles of the 1974 version and Redford as Gatsby, but for some reason I'm just bored out of my mind watching it lol.
Yes that’s fair. I agree.
@@FlagCutie that part, the Leonardo DiCaprio version is way more fun 😆
Daisy wears a hat in that version that’s straight it of the 70s. Her makeup was s also way off.
Even 1974 Gatsby’s suits were tailored in 70s style
as a fashion major and my favorite movie is the great gatsby, I'm sure to say I'm glad this showed up in my recommended! LOVED IT
purple noon

I totally agree, after reading the book and enjoying it, I was super surprised by how close the movie was to the book with few details changed
Can we just talk about Raissa's frickin' OUTFIT?! That is STUNNING!!!
Exactly 😏
Finally! An episode about The Great Gatsby!! I’ve been waiting for this to happen.
I’d love to see Raissa’s fashion reviews of:
- Babylon
- Elvis
- Atonement
The wrap Daisy wears in that scene always looked like a fuzzy airplane neck pillow to me.
😅
All the J.C. Leyendecker art when referencing the menswear makes my heart happy

I’m always so happy to see Raissa! 🙌🏼💖
*Me, as well! I wish she had her own TH-cam channel.*
Even though a lot of the fashion isn’t historically accurate, I do really like the fashion especially Daisy’s wardrobe even though she isn’t my favorite character. She did wear some really pretty dresses and her short hair went really well with the clothes.
I had no idea there were so many collaborations in this film.
I can't imagine anyone but Leo for this role. There may be more good looking and younger actors but he embodied it well. The rest if the cast including minor characters were perfectly cast as well.
He should've won his first Oscar for playing Jay Gatsby. Hands down 🥰
The Great Gatsby is one of my favorite movies, the costume design is just amazing
"The 1920s continue to be present in the 2020s with the resurgence of Gatsby-inspired fashions and Jazz Age parties." So what you're saying is... you CAN repeat the past?
I love this series so much, Glamour! Just keep doing it!

THIS IS ONE OF MY FAVOURITE FILMS OF ALL TIME, and one of my favourite TH-cam series!! I am so excited
I love this series so much, Glamour! Just keep doing it!. I would love to see more Egyptian motifs on dresses!.
Suggestions for the next episode
To Kill a Mockingbird (1962)
Hairspray (1988)
American Graffiti (1973)
I wish they delved a little deeper into the other characters as well. I'm particularly interested in Nick's outfits, especially the one he wears on his first visit to Gatsby's.

Re the necklaces. I will always think of (Thoroughly Modern) Millie bemoaning how she has too much of a "front," and so her beads never lay properly.
Yep, was thinking during this vid that my own chest and hourglass figure would definitely not have fit the 20s - but I would've been just fine the decade before. lol

Realizing the early 2010s was influenced by the 1920s with long necklaces and T-shirt dresses
I love these! ❤️ I wish more time had been spent on Gatsbys hair, other accessories he might have worn and such. Also, I miss hearing about the undergarments. I think this was about the time the bra was invented. I would have liked to hear about that!
My parents met working for Arrow shirts! Cool to see it mentioned here.
I love everything about this movie! The music, the colors, the looks and most importantly story - it was the first movie I've seen to move something in me, to feel something - that's how perfect the cast was❤❤❤
i love these videos ! keep bringing her back !

I would love to see more Egyptian motifs on dresses!
"Ah yes, Man in a pink suit went to Oxford"
Keep this series going full steam
I love this fashion series
I've been WAITING for this analysis!!! 😁 Also, very nice outfit to wear for this video 💖 good Art Deco influence ✨
I'm annoyed they skipped over the underwear. It's like they were under pressure to keep the episode in under a certain timeline.
Do a video on Chicago. It’ll be a great companion to this one.
The Great Gatsby is my favorite thing ever! *Such* a good movie, perfection! 😍💛
Daisy looks like shes wearing a furry travel pillow
The Tiffany headpiece is so stunning, but the rest of Daisy's outfit is a bit of a mess
I just love Jay Gatsby in the pink suit 💕
Well done, I really enjoyed this presentation of historical fashion........ #2
Do the professor layton games! They where originally supposed to be set in the 60s
This movie just looked stunning
I remember reading the Great Gatsby book in high school 🙂
Y’all this is GLAMOUR MAG. Get an audio specialist! Get that woman a good mic this is torture with headphones on 😭
The fashion historian looks like something out the 1920's herself.
She dresses for whatever era she's reviewing, so fun to watch -- and educational!
she has such a great wardrobe!! shes a professor at my school, i took her class last semester and her outfits were always so nice!
Lots of Ruffles and modern Couture! Nothing to do with Summer 1922, basically, and it's okay by me? I love content like this
At 5:00 doesn't she mean collar stays???
Even if it’s not amazingly accurate, I still really love the look of this film, and it suits the bombastic style of Lurhmann’s directing, not to mention how the modernisation of fashion works well with the modern style of music.

Surprised nothing was said about men’s garters to hold their socks up or their underwear.
5.20 An Oxford man would call what you refer to as a vest a waistcoat. A vest is an undergarment. The England football manager Gareth Southgate famously wore a waistcoat on the touch line of the 2018 World Cup.
Love everything but Daisy's feathered collar looks like a neck pillow i can't unsee it
Please do Frida!!!
Another interesting aspect of custom design is how it communicates the stories trajectory and characters emotional arch. But that’s another video by a different expert.
Does anyone know where can I buy a same kind of shirt that Tom Buchanan is wearing while playing polo?
I recreated that crystal dress in a fit of raging depression after watching the movie and it was such a pain that I started to feel things again lol
RIP Brooks Brothers. Never going to be the same again.
Mother Raissa
I love 20s styles.
wow this is a great video
watched this video for research purposes, stayed for entertainment purposes I LOVE 20S FASHION
Nice video !! Can you guys do The Godfather next plsss
I wish they didn’t script this quite so much. It all feels very stilted when it doesn’t have to be. Clearly the historian is an interesting expert to have. Forcing her to stare into a camera and stick to a script makes for an uncomfortable video.
Finally, great gatsby!
I beg to differ with your historian. The character (Garsby) is wearing a button up shirt, not a button down shirt.
The founder of the brooks brothers is buried in the neighbourhood Daisy lived in on Long Island.
DO MORE PLEASE
I love how gatsby's costume was basically the same and then later she says the costumes arent correct lmao
His was pretty close but things like the fit and shoe reversal are what's off and I'd imagine, especially the fit would be pretty noticeable . Daisy's was the most off and probably drags down the whole accuracy rating for the movie.
There was an earlier Great Gatsby movie starting Robert Redford and Mia Farrow.
An era when suit jackets' arm holes don't come down halfway to the torso.
Please do an episode on swimwear for a particular decade?
2:02 "white button-down shirt" ...but....he's wearing a button-up?
So this is semi-accurate. Quasi-historical
I see Raissa, I click!
They should do the 1963 section of why women kill season 1
Daisy is wearing a neck pillow
bb you gotta get a better mic! you may be able to borrow
Make a video about Anastasia dress
Who would want to wear a big furry thing around their neck in the summer pre-air conditioning era?
A shallow woman who cares more about how she looks and is perceived by her social peers than wearing comfortable, practical clothes.
What like 10 years late? Nice job
PLEASE remove transition sounds, they are really annoying during speech
Interesting video great presenter and fun. One thing though the way the graphics were edited are migraine inducing.
totally awesomazing.
😍🤩😉
mama tachibana and mrs. mizushima gonna be part of 'the greater gatsbier' in da near future.
💚🤣😜🤭🤫🤡💙
🤩
pink eh maybe salmon colour
The end result in the movie was totally bland and uninspired for some reason. It all fell flat.
Not historically inaccurate? Riiiiiiight.
The wardrobe was designed and supplied by Ralph Lauren. Maybe she’s not getting paid to admit this
The too-small fit is just uncomfortable to look at. It’s very childlike. Like a grown man in a little boy’s suit. 🥴
Finally. The second half of the roaring 20s
I prefer Robert Redford as Gatsby.
Do Singing in the Rain to see if it's Historically accurate
sorry but the fashion houses totally missed on the womens gowns. no linear bugle beads, crystals were not much used and would not have been colored and would have been geometric. Prada? really? should have gone to channel for historical accuracy. Glad I didnt bother with the movie.
Gaspy
Longest fit check I've seen.
She can’t say anything, her eyebrows are too thick 😂😭😭
