Nice to see someone who makes the effort to fill all the joints where it's been toothed out. Too many out there just point a bit of muck over the joint, iron it in and hope for the best.
Dave Badger . Thanks David yes I’m very fussy about that , I’ve seen so many jobs where it’s just been slapped up . I was taught that by a cantankerous old bugger of a bricky called Jack back in the late 80s and don’t it ever since. Thanks for watching and commenting , much appreciated 👍🏼
bric bybrick . Thanks for that , always a relief to get a decent match especially if your toothing in , so many bricks have been discontinued over the years
Nice tidy work lads. I use a thin small finger iron to compress the mortar into the joint. Once the brick has been laid into the tooth you can use a finger iron to feed the muck from the on top of the brick and push the muck all the way to the back of the tooth as the iron is long but thin enough to fit into the joint then just joint the face up. Good vids - keep them coming !
They’re r a great tool. You can use them for a multitude of jobs. Buy a few of different widths and grind the length down to suit the type of job you use it the most for. Great for repointing jobs, pointing pre-made archers, toothing, flush/slightly recessed joint finish etc 👍
bric bybrick .Yes ,they are Plasmor. Fibrolites . I think they are more clay than concrete. Light as thermalites but strong as concrete , they are 3.5 n . Pricey though , about £1.40 each !
Hi, quality work spot on as usual. How do you gauge the powder dye,I've never got it correct in the past so kept away from using it. I do small jobs and need to match in new to old as near as possible.Ive experimented off the job but still off colour. Yes I've used same ratios and purchased same sand /opc in bulk.☹️☹️ What s missing then. Re
william william I will be honest it’s all guess work . This mortar is over 60 years old so whatever they used I can’t see the same stuff being available any more . Black is the worst! No matter how black you mix it , it will always bleach out and turn grey . A few years back you could take a piece of the mortar you were matching to a Tilcon mortar plant where they would match it and knock out 25kg bags for you , not any more 😕. Sorry I wasn’t much help , it’s just one those frustrating trial and error things . Thanks for watching and commenting 👍🏼
Buy yourself Arbortech AS170 Brick and Mortar Saw you will fine they are 40% faster and 100% cleaner than a disc cutter this machine will save you a lot of time which we say time is money it's a great all round tool for many different projects check it out Steve and Alex and by the way nice videos guys
Wayne Leone . Hi Wayne it’s a nightmare colour matching mortar , the house is 40s maybe 50s so it was a case of putting in red powder dye to get as close as we can . The trouble is it’s a completely different colour when it’s wet ! 😧 Thanks for watching and commenting 👍🏼
Nice job, no line across I see. did u just use your level?? Or u just got the feel for it? I see u range it in but mad skills laying level brick by hand
Hi pal , yes I did just use the level , but when I was ranging in I line the top of the level up with the top of the course and tap em down to that , just like a line 😉👌🏼. Thanks for watching and commenting 🧱👍🏼
Hey man you guys work hard. But that’s not how you fill in a toothing you need a 3/8 pointing trowel. Come to the other side of the pond. We got some tricks to show you. Lol you guys might have been doing masonry long before we the we became a country. We got a few up ourselves looks good though
Dan The Man That’s very kind of you to mate but we work full time on foundations and we are snowed under with weekend work . Sorry but thanks for asking
Tidy enough but why not dampen where you have toothed out before you lay? All those dry bricks with dust on will not take the mortar. Its call adhesion and suction!
Bricklaying With Steve and Alex welcome buddy, toothing out is hard work but its the right way to do it if the customer is willing to pay. I always work alone and find blocking doorways up just nice for a bloke with nobody else with them.
oldmanfromyork . I used to hate this kind of job but I must be getting more patient in my old age , I like pointing now too , it’s like having a rest from bloody trench blocks !
Bricklaying With Steve and Alex Yep i agree, pointing is a nice summer job once you get past the grinding out! Ive got about 100 7nm blocks to lay tomorrow on my own, my customer who is helping is in spain! What a sunday 😮
7nm block are killers , we use them all the time ! alex off tomorrow so i am on a lintel job (future video)with a bit of pointing on my own . All proped raked out and brickwork out today so an easy day tomorrow .

Hi lads are they lightweight aggregate concrete blocks you are using on this job .
bric bybrick .Yes ,they are Plasmor. Fibrolites . I think they are more clay than concrete. Light as thermalites but strong as concrete , they are 3.5 n . Pricey though , about £1.40 each !

Use a pointing gun to fill up the toothings its much quicker and neater and fills the joint up nicely
never used a pointing gun , sounds good though , thanks for the tip and watching 👍🏽

An exterior door on my home was sealed without toothing the existing brick. Was it done incorrectly?
Toothing out is a must really as it bonds the bricks in properly 🧱👍🏽
Nice work. Is the mortar dye a standard colour or do you mix/match to get it looking the same as the existing mortar?
Wayne Leone . Hi Wayne it’s a nightmare colour matching mortar , the house is 40s maybe 50s so it was a case of putting in red powder dye to get as close as we can . The trouble is it’s a completely different colour when it’s wet ! 😧

How much would a job like that cost? I’m asking just about the outside brick laying with material.
edbtzkhud probably in the region of £320 to £350 depending on the bricks 🧱👍🏼
