I'm a bricklayer by trade, but gave it up 25 years ago when I set another business up. Thanks to Covid, that other business has now failed, so back on the trowel I go.
I love watching your video's to help catch up on what has changed since I gave it up.
Well done lads 🙂👍
Sorry to hear that , glad our videos help and good luck 🤞🏼🧱👍🏽
Sorry to hear that🙏
Can i ask you something ,
Because im planning buy the
house , question is the garage door was removed and brick it up, the house owner said that work no need permit from council, is it correct?
Thank you
Always check with your local council 👍🏽🧱
Excellent video well done top job top team awesome thanks 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
Thanks Phil for your regular support and sticking with us we really appreciate it . Happy new year 🧱👍🏼
Top job guys 🎉

You boys smashed that in a day. When people ask what you charge for a brick is pretty much impossible on a job like this. Lovely job 👍🏻
Thanks pal we always price these jobs on a day rate 🧱👍🏽
@@SteveAndAlexBuild something I’m learning. Do you factor all your power tools and plant when you give them your day rate? I’ve had many arguments with clients about how £200 a day is too bloody cheap when you have to consider all tools, fuel, plant ect...

What a cracking job you both made of that

Done loads myself. You see so many of these gone wrong with wrong bricks and mortar. You did a great job with everything even cleaning up .
Brilliant job done right just how it should be .

I have seen so many horrible disasters !
One had the wrong brick and no stone cill !
I’ve also seen on the Bottom 2 red engineering courses they couldn’t be bothered to tooth out so the 2 reds were stack bonded brick on brick ! 😱🧱👍🏽

Probably charge the same as you but do a crap job Steve .
Its so disappointing to see but your work looks great so credit to you both .

Merry Christmas 🎄 Gentlemen. Really top job and that house looks so much better now with a room instead of a garage, and will now be balanced upstairs Vs downstairs. Great to see you have a go with a mortar rake on the angle grinder. I was thinking there must be a catch like the tool doesn't last 5 mins. Also good to see the architrave cutter, don't know how I managed without one. They keep changing the blade fitting. I've only got the old bolt on style, I give it 1/4 turn, amazed thread not stripped. Have a great New year guys.
Thanks John , all the best to you too 🍻🧱👍🏽
That Marcrist tool is a game changer for toothing out.
Yes mate it really is but it struggles on sand and cement . It’s better suited to lime mortar like the silo stuff on most new builds . Toolstation do a cheaper version but mine bent and nearly broke my wrist 😳👍🏼🧱
Sweet job!
Cheers Mike 🧱👍🏽
nice tidy job as per usual lads! only thing i would have washed the brick cutting dust off the exsisting brickwork first before laying up to it but im a bit ocd lol ....take care guys
Cheers Doug 🧱👍🏽
Ah, there's those pesky wall starters I was talking about around 11 minutes in.
See, got to it eventually :D
Good video.
Thanks pal 😁🧱👍🏽
Great job lads. Phew! I nearly missed this vid. I'm normally straight on to watching them when they're released. Damn Christmas distracting me! 😁😁

That was an old video , we’ve sorted ourselves out since then 😬. All the best to you too 🧱👍🏼
Great job I like the mortar rake not seen them that long. I’ll try that myself cheers 😁
Nice getting down to some trench block I always get the ones I have to put concrete in 😡🤣👍🏻
The raker is from Screwfix. On most modern garages the blockwork goes across the doorways and most slabs are at least 150 mm deep and reinforced

That drilly-thing there to cut the joints worked good , I wonder if you could go through a brick with it if ever needed . All the best Steve and Al ! Nice intro btw 😁🙏🏼🎄

Great vid. Checked the comments and no one mentioned it. Is there a rule for when to use cavity closers? They didn't seem to go in on this one. Thanks for the help...similar project that I'm doing later next year.
We never even gave it a thought to be honest. Check with building control when you start 🧱👍🏽
Another good job fellas 👍🧱 that raking out tool looks the dogs bollox 💪🏻 does it have a decent lifespan Steve? Might have a look to see if they do one for the SDS drill, will make raking out for strongboys on propping jobs such a timesaver! 😎
Cheers , it a great tool but not sure how long they last as not had it long 🤔🧱👍🏽
Great video mate! I'm planning the exact same comversion at the minute and getting a few quotes in. Could you please give me an idea of how much the total cost of that job was including the window? Thanks 👍
As every job is different there is no rough cost.
We also dont have anything to do with the windows or anything inside the garage so dont actually know any costs.
sorry about that 😬🧱👍🏽
No probs mate. Could I ask how you close the cavity behind the sill and the inner skin? Wondering how I would install window boards if the cavity is still there? Any help would be great, thanks!
@jamesjohnston7418 . You can get insulated cavity closers from most builders merchants 🧱👍🏽
Looking to get mine replaced. Do you cover Essex by any chance?
No sorry 🧱👍🏽
Steve do yous 13 inch felt under the cills those we tools are some job for cutting out an stuff
Never had one before , they are great 🧱👍🏽
Where do you l source them stone sills these days? Just about to start a conversion and need one very similar.
Hard to come by now . Google stooled cill for your local stockist 🧱👍🏽
Longer video please one throughout the year possibly for new year? And where is the rake thing from is there a stronger one for harder mortar? Also is that a spear and Jackson trowel how come you work so late did the job have to be done that day ?thanks
Screwfix only sell the one version . Al uses a S&J I use ox . We were done by 4 🧱👍🏽
Great video again fellas, that mortar raking tool looks brilliant!! Don’t suppose you’ve got a link or a name from where it’s from do you?👍🏽🧱
We’ve binned the links, never earned a penny off them 🙄.
Ours is a marcrist and it came from toolstation 👌🏼🧱👍🏽

@@ConstructionwithKieren . Ah I cocked up in the last comment. . The cheap ones are Toolststion , the expensive Marcrist are Screwfix 🧱👍🏽
Love the tool for taking out the half bats, what is it called,?

Few questions from a newbie to masonry, why is it in the existing pillars the internal layer cinder blocks are up against the external bricks, as in without an insulation gap as you've just put in?
Also what's the purpose of the two separate DPCs you've put in, is the inside one just to isolate rising damp from the garage floor then you put the main cavity tray in to deal with rain etc coming through the outer course? in that case I thought the weep vent was supposed to go just on top of the cavity tray not below it? id like to know what products did you use for these 2 DPCs?
Finally whats the purpose of all those pins in the cinder blocks? is that important to put in?
Thanks!!
I’ll answer the questions I understand.
Every skin has dpc ( standard plastic damp proof course )
The weep vents never go below a cavity tray .
Not sure what pins you mean and judging by you calling them cinder blocks I’m guessing you may be from USA ? . If so our regulations are very different to yours . Hope all that makes sense 🧱👍🏽
Would one need building regulation clearance/planning permission from the local council for this?
You should always check with the council .
Building regulations are definitely needed though 🧱👍🏽
Hi Steve i asked this on the last one. Why the air brick and cavity tray. That's a solid floor. I'm doing something similar on a shop front but dont see the need for the air brick. I may put a damp tray and weep holes in as it's a high front.
yes I don't understand that if it's a solid floor you don't need air bricks less they are raising the floor inside with timber joists I suppose there is an explanation for it
@@mickgreen8672 Correct , it’s a floating timber floor inside to raise it level with the house . It’s also insulated so condensation could in theory form on the cold slab so the vents are for the void between the two floors . Also building regs asks for the vents and trays 👌🏼🧱👍🏼
Where did you get that new tool for taking out the joints
Screwfix mate .🧱👍🏼
Get your selves to toolstation they sell the same thing off brand but it’s abit over 100mm deep unlike the marcrist one so can easily do a full cut, they also work for plunging too for single brick extraction and is a lot cheaper only £18 ☺️
@@SamHughes89 Tried the cheap one and it bent at full pelt and nearly broke my wrist . The cheap one is better in the short version . 🧱👍🏽
Good afternoon. What was the purpose of digging after the garage door was taken out. Is it to check the foundation. My house is also a new house build it is 17 years old. Do I need to dig as part of the planning permission. Although I have just applied for the permission. Many thanks
We had a row of block pavers on top of the edge of the floor slab so took them up .
Building control want a minimum 150 mm slab , reinforced with a Dpm underneath which is pretty standard on new builds now .
They May ask for a test hole in the slab to find out all of the above 🧱👍🏽
Are you based anywhere near Castleford West Yorkshire?just exactly the job I'm looking to have done.
Hi Billy sorry no we are in Lancashire. Mark hep is over your way though 🤙🏾🧱👍🏽
Hi Steve can I just ask why a tray is needed .is it because its straight off the concrete slab .
Building control specify it 🧱👍🏽
@@SteveAndAlexBuild you think its because its level threshold from slab to drive way
Also I always use the diagonals video you did for extensions works a treat rather than stringing a line and trying to square up off that.its square everytime.hope you had a lovely Xmas

Do you need the permit to remove and brick up the garage door from council ? Thank you?
Every job is different so you should check with local building control 🧱👍🏽
Is planning permission required to do this? Wish you lived in my area... Great job and video as usual :)
It all depends on local rules . It does need building regs though 🧱👍🏽
Building warrant for sure. Just phone the council and ask to be put through to the building standards department, they'll tell you what you need.

Thats the plugging chisel made redundant lol
That would be great 😁🧱👍🏽
Steve old mate can you attach a afil link to the raking out tool I want to give that a whirl cheers buddy
We sacked the links as there was something wrong so we never made a penny 🙄.
Just go on line and get the long version from screw fix .👌🏼 The shorter raking out version is a waste of money £22! , Toolstation sells a toolpak version a lot cheaper . 🧱👍🏽

Sorry there is no single cost for any job 😬🧱👍🏽
Don’t know why they bother building integral garages like this, too small for modern cars, you can’t open the doors once your in, and let’s face it, who ever uses them as a garage...they’re usually just storage or a place to pile your junk...so best way is to turn them into habitual spaces...nice job, love those cills, and wonder of wonder...the window fitted...lol...
Very true 🧱👍🏽
Wonder how muchn they paid for those cills! I had 2 bespoke ones made for £12! Ye back in 1995!

Sorry but when you discuss something like the trench block you do it so fast and with so little explanation that I don't fully understand. It feels like your only talking to people who already know all these things.
Hope you both have a good holiday 😀
They're standard concrete blocks used to build the foundation walls. He was able to lay the bricks on top of them which is handy otherwise they'd have to probably pour concrete to give the wall something to sit on. The lads have a load of vids laying trench blocks. Check them out. You'll learn loads.
