@@sew_wear I actually made the skirt 😄! It's not perfect but i'm still very proud. I had trouble making my lines straight. And in the end my elastic band kept twisting and turning in the tube. I probably made the tube too small for the elastic don't you think?

To prevent the elastic from twisting and turning you can sew vertical lines at the sides of the waistband (part of the skirt where the elastic is), just make sure before you do that, that the front and back are approximately equally pleated :)

Hi seamstress of 50+ yrs. This is a great pattern for anyone & especially for a beginner. Mia’s designs are quick & easy… so glad we have her. A little suggestion if trying this for the 1st time. Select a print like Mia used. Very forgiving if you make a mistake no one will know lol. And makes a great lounger if the 1st couple are less than perfect sewing. This looks so doable but I just have so many questions!! How long is our pattern? What are the dimensions we choose? Also, what kind of fabric do we use? A knit two way stretch? Cotton? Does it even matter? I have so many questions but I really want to try this project. I need longer skirts for work so I can be modest and comfortable and cute.
Hi lovely, depending on the type of flow and length you want, you can change the dimensions. So if you measure your waist which is the elastic length, you can multiply that by 1.25 - 2 to create the flow (the higher the number the more "puffy" it becomes) and also choose the length you want plus the seam allowances. The material doesn't matter all that much but the creator said she was using 100% viscose. I've done this with linen at a 1.25 to my waist measurement and it turned out 👌

How do I know how much fabric I need to fit my body type? Im a curvy girl and I love this tutorial but I’ve never sewn before and I’m not sure how much fabric I need ♡
So how does the skirt hang on your body after some time? Does it look okay? Everyone says the skirt needs to be cut on the bias but yours appears to be on the grain line. Although your method allows for a long maxi with minimal use of material.

How to calculate your measurements: a (width of one piece) = bigger it will be, more the skirt will be gathered (If you want the skirt to be gathered approximately the same as me, make it 1.5 times your waist measurement (my waist measurement is 64 cm (25 inches), and I made my a measurement 100 cm (40 inches). If your calculated a measurement is bigger than the width of the fabric (which is usually between 56-60 inches, I advise you to make a measurement the same as the width of the fabric, otherwise you will have to make the skirt out of three pieces instead of two). b = the length you want + 10 cm (4 inches) (for hemming and room for elastic band). How many meters/yards of fabric you should buy; I bought fabric the size of two times of my b measurement. (In my case b is 115 cm (46 inches); which means that I bought 230 cm (92 inches) of 140 cm (56 inches) wide fabric. Thank you Chalie! The step by step instructions: 1. Sew front and back together at the sides. (straight stitch secured with a zig-zag stitch) 2.a.) Hem the top of the skirt by folding it once. (zig.zag stitch) 2.b.) Fold the the of the skirt once again - enough that the elastic will fit inside. Stitch that all around (straight stitch) but leave a few centimeters open so that you will be able to put the elastic inside. 3.a.) With the help of the safety pin put the elastic inside the opening you left in the previous step and once it comes out through the the same opening from the other side you have put it in sew both ends of the elastic together. (zig-zag stitch) 3b.) Handstitch close the opening through which you have put the elastic in. 4. Hem the bottom of the skirt by folding it twice. :)
Yes. its easy but not very flattering to any figure. How about adding a wide waist band with a zipper and lots of sequins and beads. Something like a gypsy skirt.

For the elastic you do steps 2 and 3, which are shown in the video, like you would have only one layer of fabric (you will actually have two; the outer fabric and the lining). Lastly hem the bottom of each fabric separately. Depending on which kind of outer fabric you have, you can make the lining shorter (at tha bottom) than the outer fabric. :)

However maybe make skirt out of fabric that has less fall than 100% viscose I am using such as 100% cotton, because if your petticoat won᾿t be floor length, it can happen that it will be visible where the petticoat ends from the outside, because below it the skirt will have more vertical fall as oppose to where the petticoat underneath would be. However if you will make it like that you will have to sew in a zipper otherwise you won᾿t be able to dress and undress (unless if you have a really stretchy fabric). Also if you make pattern straight at the top (like I did it) there will be a little more tiers at the sides of the bottom, whereas if you make pattern more like a circle / half circle skirt, tiers at the bottom will be less visible since fabric will fall more evenly. If you have any more questions don᾿t hesitate to ask them :)
Hey :) Thank you for your question! To pull the elastic band through I used safety pin. I secured both ends of the elastic with one pin on each end and sewed it together with a zig-zag stitch in a square so that the stitch is more secured. Let me know if you have any other questions. :)
How long do you think the rubber band should be cut for someone with a waist size of 30 inches? I did it by watching your video. I used 1.65 fabric, it looks extra shirred. I made the rubber band 73cm but it's still big. Please help me.😢

Measure yourself from your waist to where you want the skirt to end, then add a couple inches for the waitband and hem. You can always hem the bottom of the skirt more if you need to to get it to the length you want
Thank you for your question Michelle. Yes for each pieces - both pieces together are 200 cm in my case. However you can make your a measurements different I wrote mine just to get a rough idea. The bigger that a measurement will be, more the skirt will be gathered,.2 x a have to be at least the girth of your hips so you will be able to dress and undress. However I advise you to make it significally bigger, so that the skirt will be more gathered. To get better idea how much should you make it wide, I made each piece (a) 100 cm wide and my measurement around my waist is 62 cm. (That means that both skirt pieces together are more than three times my waist measurement). Have a lovely creative day :)
Michelle thank you for your question. Yes, you can add the drawstring inside the waitsband where the elastic is, just make two small holes on the outside of the waistband in the front, so you will be able to pull the rope through and then be able to tie it up :)

Can you put a petticoat under this to fluff it out?

sure you can! However maybe make skirt out of fabric that has less fall than 100% viscose I am using such as 100% cotton, because if your petticoat won᾿t be floor length, it can happen that it will be visible where the petticoat ends from the outside, because below it the skirt will have more vertical fall as oppose to where the petticoat underneath would be. Thank you for your question! If you want more of a »A« shape skirt - I show it in this tutorial: th-cam.com/video/nQ28vEaczko/w-d-xo.html (skirt starts at 10:21). However if you will make it like that you will have to sew in a zipper otherwise you won᾿t be able to dress and undress (unless if you have a really stretchy fabric). Also if you make pattern straight at the top (like I did it) there will be a little more tiers at the sides of the bottom, whereas if you make pattern more like a circle / half circle skirt, tiers at the bottom will be less visible since fabric will fall more evenly. If you have any more questions don᾿t hesitate to ask them :)
Could the elastic be replaced with a ribbon as a drawstring instead?

What did you attach to the elastic to pull it through? And then I couldn't quite see how you sewed it together or the square.

Thank you for your question! To pull the elastic band through I used safety pin. I secured both ends of the elastic with one pin on each end and sewed it together with a zig-zag stitch in a square so that the stitch is more secured. Let me know if you have any other questions. :)
How long do you think the rubber band should be cut for someone with a waist size of 30 inches? I did it by watching your video. I used 1.65 fabric, it looks extra shirred. I made the rubber band 73cm but it's still big. Please help me.😢

Thank you for your question! The skirt would be less flowy and have less fall but I think it would still look great if you make it out of quilting cotton. Maybe you could also add pockets at the sides :)
P.S.: I made mine out of 100% viscose fabric.

you need two pieces size a x b. How to calculate your a and b measurements:
a (width of one piece) = bigger it will be, more the skirt will be gathered (If you want the skirt to be gathered approximately the same as me, make it 1.5 times your waist measurement (my waist measurement is 64 cm (25 inches), and I made my a measurement 100 cm (40 inches). If your calculated "a" measurement is bigger than the width of the fabric (which is usually between 56-60 inches, I advise you to make a measurement the same as the width of the fabric, otherwise you will have to make the skirt out of three pieces instead of two).
b = the length you want + 10 cm (4 inches) (for hemming and room for elastic band).

Measure yourself from your waist to where you want the skirt to end, then add a couple inches for the waitband and hem. You can always hem the bottom of the skirt more if you need to to get it to the length you want

Thank you for your question Michelle. Yes for each pieces - both pieces together are 200 cm in my case.
However you can make your a measurements different I wrote mine just to get a rough idea. The bigger that a measurement will be, more the skirt will be gathered,.2 x a have to be at least the girth of your hips so you will be able to dress and undress. However I advise you to make it significally bigger, so that the skirt will be more gathered. To get better idea how much should you make it wide, I made each piece (a) 100 cm wide and my measurement around my waist is 62 cm. (That means that both skirt pieces together are more than three times my waist measurement). Have a lovely creative day :)

emma frank you can “measure” your waist with the elastic and then add an inch or so to be safe
It doesn’t matter how wide the fabric is around the waist, so long as it isn’t too small

Michelle thank you for your question. Yes, you can add the drawstring inside the waitsband where the elastic is, just make two small holes on the outside of the waistband in the front, so you will be able to pull the rope through and then be able to tie it up :)

You can use stretchy fabric for this project. It might be a little heavier to wear but it will still look good. My a = 100 cm and b = 115 cm.

Thank you for your question. I bought fabric the size of two times of b measurement. (In my case b is 115 cm; which means that I bought 230 cm of 140 cm wide fabric).
P.S.: To calculate your b measurement: b = the length of the skirt you want you want + 10 cm (for hemming and room for elastic band). But don᾿t forget that you need to buy fabric the size of two times of b measurement. :)
