Using bacteria to make self-healing concrete

  • Concrete is the most commonly used construction material on earth, found in everything from roads and buildings to bridges and sewers.
Although concrete is strong, it's prone to cracking. To solve this problem, researchers from the University of Bath are investigating how certain species of Bacillus bacteria could be used to make concrete which heals itself.
The Microbiology Society is a membership charity for scientists interested in microbes, their effects and their practical uses. It is one of the largest microbiology societies in Europe with a worldwide membership based in universities, industry, hospitals, research institutes and schools.
Our principal goal is to develop, expand and strengthen the networks available to our members so that they can generate new knowledge about microbes and ensure that it is shared with other communities. The impacts from this will drive us towards a world in which the science of microbiology provides maximum benefit to society.

My sister decades ago tried to repair cracks in our terrace with mineralic cat litter slurry. I don‘t remember the brand, but our cat (german house cat, short hair) abused the excessive litter my sister sprinkled on (my dad assumed due to her lazyness she used dirty litter). So did the neighbors cats. Next spring the smell had gone, and the cracks (no preferred direction) disappeared.

We have a patent for entrapment of microbes in an open-cell polymeric material that can be tested to last the concrete mixing and forming. All ancient buildings in India used a concrete mix that allowed these bacteria to grow and smoothen the concrete over time

Why don’t you do something about it? Hope you realize the harm you are doing by not making this an open patent. Your greed does more harm than good

I hope that this vast culture of bacteria to be used in many concrete applications will not change ecology, or start having adverse effect on coral reefs.

@uma chauhan you will have to procure them from culture collections. You can also isolate them and screen them for Calcite preparation

@uma chauhan There are bacterial cultures mentioned in the literature. You can use the reported cultures. Check the websites of culture collections in India first. International culture collections will definitely have the reported cultures.

cracks are fine, but looks like if they escape it can multiply outside the structures too, after all outside the concretes there are all voids, underwater calcium and dissolved CO2, calcium carbonate causing increase in alkalinity . just imagine if the growth of bacteria becomes uncontrollable, there will be concretes everywhere, and if it enters human body, that will be a problem .. if absorbed by plants , I can actually sense this to be a risky innovation . if I am wrong please explain me

First of all the bacteria is encapsulated so it wont happen and also there is range of akalanity in which it can survive so better encapuslation better resluts less harm chances

    • @MadameCorgi

These are environmental microbes. Since there is currently not forming concretes everywhere, or killing people, I'm not convinced that is a significant worry

Use this bacteria with a liquid solution on critical concrete made from mycelium. The mycelium could replace the steel, and the the bacteria would fill in the porous mycelium and strengthen it further. I was have done a few attempts at using a flash graphene added to the mycelium just before dehydration, attempting to cause it to make a graphene nano thread core, anyway I have had a few interesting results, not trying to sell an idea just throwing info out
