    8:08: Yes, Pachelbel's Canon was written for string quartet, and it is a pain in the neck for the cello: 52 bars of playing the same eight notes.
    And it is so popular, because it is so simplistic. And if you replace the G in the seventh accord by Em, you get Streets of London.
    But the most famous canon in existence is Frère Jaques.

    I think there are three reasons why "The Entertainer" became so played: (1) The movie "The Sting" (1974) which brought the music of Scott Joplin back to the Public's attention (although I prefer the solo piano version of "Solace" over "The Entertainer"), (2) it is in the Public Domain so any can play it, and (3) it was one of the early songs played via computer, On my Commodore 64 computer there was a music program and one of the songs included was "The Entertainer".

    The Entertainer - from 1975 - 1979, I was in high school and was in the Symphonic Orchestra, electric piano and percussion. Back then, we didn’t have two different types of groups. When we performed/toured, a small number of us had to learn different styles, and for the Jazz/Ragtime section, a small number of us would perform. The Entertainer was the core piece, and sometimes, depending on the performance time, it was the only piece played in that section. You are right, there is some complications for the pianist playing it. If I recall the rest of the ensemble included Clarinet, Sax, and sometimes Trumpet with the piano. If the venue has an upright piano we would use that with the other ensemble members standing around the piano.

    Back in the 70s when I was learning, every kid had to get the simplified arrangement of The Entertainer, with just a single bass line plus the melody. Another one that was popular in the late 70s or maybe early 80s was Music Box Dancer, a piano solo piece that got some radio time and some popularity. It seems to not have had as much staying power, but might be one some actual music boxes. At first when I saw the words Prelude in C Major (which I have played), I was thinking of Chopin's Prelude in c minor, which is one of my go-tos when I want to wallop on a piano with some big chords, then finish with a whisper.

    Fun fact about Heart and Soul: while most people play it as I-vi-IV-V in the key of C, the sheet music I have for the full song (1938 copyright date) is actually I-vi-ii-V in the key of F. The first time I saw it I found it interesting that it uses a 2-5-1 cadence like you would find in jazz instead of the expected 4-5-1.

    • @matticawood
      @matticawood  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

I have never liked the way (classical) pianist scoff at some of the music in this video and I really started hating the snobbish elitist behaviour some youtube pianists have towards some of this music once I started trying to learn the piano myself. Well said. I like the acknowledgment here that some songs deserve to be "overplayed." Unfortunately, much of the professional music world is plagued by elitism. It's up to us to buck the trend! What a silly idea, that we should change what we like because too many other people share our taste.

    When I dreamed of learning the piano, the first song I wanted to learn was Canon. I always thought it was one of the most beautiful pieces to be written. I didnt really mind the graduation song, didnt necessarily like it either. But memories ruined the crap out of the song I agree. One song that many disagree with me about is Beautiful in white. I always thought that was a great use of Canon. But nothing will ever be as beautiful as the original score. The one the channel Just Classics posted i can listen too a thousand times LOL My mother always loved fur elis and music box dancer. Both I also love. Lastly, I always wondered why Train's play that song sounded so freaking familiar......... It's because of one of the songs my grandma always played back when i was really young. Heart and soul! The Prelude in C is the first and probably the most well-known part of the Well-Tempered Clavier. But we have to keep in mind that Bach wrote a prelude and a fugue for each major and minor key, so it's 48 different pieces, which makes the whole opus not overplayed.

    Heart and Soul and Hot Cross Buns were the two songs that my choir teacher banned from ever being played on the piano. Any other song she was fine with, just not those

    As a rock/rhythmic musician I would definitely write the Moonlight Sonata in 6/8 instead of triplets!

    I get you, it's similar to how Stairway to Heaven is a so overplayed but also teaches guitarists to play fingerstyle.

    Damn you played A Thousand Years ‘early in your piano playing’? It was released in 2011… now I feel old… (!)

    1st movement of the Moonlight Sonata is one of the greatest pieces of music ever written, no question. I am missing "Für Elise", I still find that annoying every time I hear it being played - gives me nightmares. I played the piano myself for 12 yrs - I cannot count how many times I had to listen to other players perform "Für Elise".

    Lord Vinheteiro is technically perfect, BUT what I miss is warmth and empathy in his playing. As an example of what I mean: watch the piano scene in Spielberg's movie "The Pianist" th-cam.com/video/jHfQCfUTlXE/w-d-xo.html or the at this time 19 years old Yuja Wang th-cam.com/video/4l1bs5hlnYk/w-d-xo.html

      I guess it's just his style. He has said in some interviews (in portuguese) that he hates over-expressive players.
