  • In my opinion Dayjur would have been a match or better for any top sprinter, from any generation, from anywhere in the world. One of the greatest sprinters in the history of horse racing.

    My great-aunt Georgia Hofmann bred Dayjur. She was self-taught and spent hours studying bloodlines and genetics to get the top quality racehorses that she did. Dayjur is out of her champion sprinter, Gold Beauty, who is out of Stick to Beauty, my great-aunt's foundation broodmare who she bred to Mr. Prospector in the late 1970s to produce Gold Beauty. Triple Tiara and National Racing Hall of Famer, Sky Beauty, is out of the same line, with her second dam being Gold Beauty and her third dam Stick to Beauty. ESPN on Sky Beauty when she died in 2004: "Sky Beauty hailed from one of the richest female families of modern times. Her dam was the Grade 1 winner Maplejinsky, and her second and third dam were champion sprinter Gold Beauty (dam of Dayjur) and the great broodmare Stick to Beauty." She also bred Louis Quatorze who won the Preakness in 1996 against Derby winner Skip Away. I am extremely proud of my aunt and her horse breeding legacy that brought joy and excitement to thousands of racing fans everywhere!

    "The best I have ever seen, you have ever seen and anyone has ever seen". That was the great Willie Carson`s statement on Frankel in June 2012 but it could easily have applied to sprinting and Dayjur. His run in New York in 1990 from the right hand stall on a left handed track would have cooked almost any other sprinter. On that day, Dayjur and Safely Kept (the US Champion) cooked the whole field. It was amazing !

    For me he was the best sprinter from the UK I have seen. I remember backing him when he won the Temple Stakes - after that he was pretty much unbackable with really short odds every time he ran, so I just watched. I don't think there has been one like him since as the top sprinters tend to beat each other these days. The Nunthorpe win was something else too.

    Dayjur wasn't overrated in any way, he was exceptional and he had the best American sprinters beat at the Breeders Cup before the freak incident where he jumped the shadow on the track. I'm sure it's true that over the years Australia have bred more top class sprinters than we have in Europe but that doesn't mean that Dayjur wasn't outstanding. That's like me saying Kingston Town wasn't great because Europe breeds better middle distance horses.

    I went to all 3 days of the Ebor festival for more than 20 years and I'd go as far as to say despite all the fantastic horses that I saw there, Dayjur was the best regardless of distance.
    I'd stopped going by the time Frankel ran there and it's funny to think that Dayjur got beat by a vastly inferior horse (Todd) at Haydock and the same thing very nearly happened to Frankel (with Zoffany) at Royal Ascot.
    Just goes to show that any horse, even the greatest are vulnerable on any given day.

    @sonofscrewcap UR right. Though I believe my opinion will be established fact by the end of this year. The reason she was rated the top sprinter in the world last year without leaving "her own back-yard" is because Oz sprinters are the best in the world. I actually think the opposite of ur statement is true. Sprinters nowadays would need to win in Oz to be considered truly great. Hay List is as good as S Blast / SSB / T'over Target / Miss Andretti / Choisir. BC beat him by 5L on the bridle.

  • @bgardiner2000
    @bgardiner2000 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @schardy80 Not to mention the fact that the run of Ortensia gives a direct line to Sacred Kingdom, racing in his own back-yard. He's been the world's sprinting yard-stick for the last 2-3 years, and Ortensia was beaten less than 3. I know it's a big call but I think she will be Abernant level (let alone Dayjur) if she stays sound and they manage her career effectively.

Did you have a look at the Patinack Classic? Amongst the beaten brigade was a horse called Hay List, who was widely regarded as the best sprinter in Australia since Scillachi. And she hosed him by 10 lengths (albeit he wasn't at his best). If she stays sound ...

    @schardy80 I know what you mean. What will she do with any amount of pressure on a good track. Moody is nowhere near the bottom of her yet. Maybe it's unreachable. I've not seen her pressured in any of her races. Even in the Lightning she was only ridden out for 150m at best. What will she do with the screws on for the last 3F? After the track work she had in the L'ning I'm surprised a shot at the sprint triple crown wasn't talked about. Placid Ark & Scillachi. Pretty good company.

  • @bgardiner2000
    @bgardiner2000 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @schardy80 And the thought of SYT. I get butterflies just thinking about it. It's going to be 1 of the biggest things for ANZ racing since Phar Lap won in Mexico. And it means we will have a new reference point for Timeform ratings. IMO Australian middle distance horses are greatly under-rated. E.g. Sunline only achieved a 129 rating as did Northerly. I think that these were massively under-valued. So at least we will have a better yard-stick. If he trains on that is. From reports, he has.

  • @bgardiner2000
    @bgardiner2000 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @sonofscrewcap For the last decade the best sprinters have been coming from ANZ. In the video it says "it may be a long time until we see his kind again." I have a feeling that is going to be '11. There's an unbeaten filly from Aust called Black Caviar that is now rated the top-rated sprinter in the world. What's most impressive about this is that a. she's never left Aust & b. she's won only 1 G1. Such is the aura growing around her. Have a look at the 2010 Patinack Farm Classic.

I have to say I really do hate statements like 'Dayjur wouldn't have seen which way she went'. Dayjur was dominant in his time, BC looks like she could be dominant now, comparing them is totally pointless. @schardy80 We live in hope I guess. Moody knows that if she goes OS, with the size of the team he has (he had 5 lined up in the Oakleigh!), someone else will have to prepare her. He couldn't risk p*ssing off 30+ owners to camapign her OS. If she stays sound this preparation I reckon there will be a lot of pressure to show her off... & offers from the likes of S'pore and HK race committees. She's a once in 2-3 generation horse. Be a shame not to share with the sprinting minnows in Europe ;))

    @bgardiner2000 So OZ have actually found a distance in Horse Racing that they are actually good at.
    Its because of the lack of interest in breeding sprinters that this has happened.Take Milers and Middle distance horses
    Why dont Australia have anything remotely close to the best.Its because the rest of the world DO want to breed horses for these distances.We have allowed OZ the the much needed chance to shine in the world of Thoroughbred racing.We can quite easily push you back into obscurity.

Sunline, Makybe Diva, Northerly, Lohnro, Saintly, Octagonal, Haradasun (won the '08 QA Stakes), would have all been among the top 2-3 flat racing horses in the UK. Agreed Euro stayers are superior, but at middle distances there is nothing in it.

    Yes BC is terrific.But not quite Dayjur.Possibly might be in the future.But not yet.
    And i wouldnt always go by timeform ratings either.Harbinger won group 1 race,and was rated as an all-time great.

    @bgardiner Claiming BC is the best ever is naive to say the least.
    Dont let your emotion for a horse cloud your judgement.Though she may be your favourite,that doesn't mean she is the best ever.BC needs to race outside of her own country,at the very least.
    And so Coolmore bought ONE sprinter to breed from means nothing whatsoever.There are some very easy sprint prizes to be picked up in Europe.The rest of the world just arent interested in sprinters.Thats FACT!

    @sonofscrewcap Black Caviar won her 9th straight race (first up) in the G1 Lightning Stakes (1000m) in Melbourne today, the 1st leg of the world sprint series. I was on the 2nd favourite Hay List, the = 2nd top rated sprinter in the world. I'll not make that mistake again. Sorry, even Dayjur would not have seen which way she went. If she stays sound she'll get a 140+ TF rating. Absolute freak of nature.

      bgardiner2000 No way is that accurate regarding Dayjur. You had to see him to believe it. He should have raced on then the world would have got to see this outstanding speedster. Nothing could touch him then or now.

    @sonofscrewcap It may be optomistic at this point, but it's hardly naive. You sound like the average English cricket supporter did a few years ago when you were being thrashed day in day out. "Cricket? I'm not really interested." One of the most successful sires of stayers in the last 20 yrs (Danehill) was a sprinter. Sorry, but your argument fails to hold water. "The rest of the world just arent interested in sprinters" is a misguided comment. Aren't interested = No good at it.

    That's your challenge Black Caviar. Win at Royal Ascot, win the BC Sprint, and you will be a better horse than Dayjur.

      I thoroughly agree. I wonder-I'm 60-if we'll see anything like "Dayjur" again. Better than "Frankel" in that he showed other countries, and the USA what a speedball he was. I was at Belmont, and the groan of the crowd was not picked up by the track microphones, it was louder version of the "Royal Academy" win with Lester Piggott

      BC was rated a pound inferior by Timeform.

  • @RandyWatson69

    @bgardiner2000 No country other than OZ,and maybe The US actually cares about sprinters these days.Breeders other than than the ones in ANZ certainly dont want horses that have a sprinting pedigree anymore.
    So while BC maybe a good horse.What competition has she got other than in her own country?She at least needs to take on the best that the US has to offer(As Dayjur did).At least take her out of her own comfort zone.There is no point in her beating the same tired old nags week in week out.

    @sonofscrewcap You really are completely clueless aren't you? There is more money to be made on our side of the pond. That's why you only see our sprinters thanks to the world sprint series. ANZ t'breds are as good as anywhere. Let me educate you a little... you're clearly in need. So You Think is going to make ur best middle distance horses look so average it will be a joke. The only reason you'll see him is because he's entire & Coolmore paid $30m for a 1/2 share. Cont'd...

    Royal Academy would have beaten him at Haydock except for a shocking ride from the overrated John Reid

      Agree that the ride from John Reid was poor but look at Carson on Dayjur he never picked up his stick - hands and heels. Willie is on record as saying that this performance was one of his easiest.
