He was the only horse to win 4 championships in one year (not yet called Eclipse awards.) Set world record for the mile that lasted for decades, carrying 134 pounds. Fatal flaw was that he couldn't really be rated--Damascus only beat him by running with a rabbit. Great list. Obviously there is no "correct" list. Kudos to you for not numbering and just putting a list out there. Some of my random thoughts...Point Given maybe best horse since 2000 to not win TC. Of course there were some greats. Smarty Jones, Afleet Alex were two of them. I think Spectacular Bid is one of the TOP 3 dirt horses. Won at many distances, broke handful of records, raced 30 times or so. Won 26 of them. We didn't get to see how good Barbaro was. Candy Ride looked like the "next big thing" in his Pacific Classic romp. His track record still stands today. Rachel Alexandra's "prime" window was short, but during that time, I'd have bet on her over Zenyatta. Zenyatta's career was better. Pharoah was the real deal. I think Justify was too. Baffert has talked up those two and Point Given more than any of his other horses ever. Silver Charm, gutsy as they get. Arrogate...here and gone in a flash. Same with Shared Belief (son of Candy Ride). Too many horses get 8 races in and they are retired (as soon as they are determined to be "Great", they are retired). Stinks but its the reality. Ghostzapper...only ran over a mile in one race...and SMASHED everyone. What would have happened if he would have trained for longer distances and ran in TC races? War Emblem....a one trick pony for the most part. If he got the lead and wasn't pressed for it, he'd win. Real Quiet...likeable...ran his best 3 races of his career between May and June of 1998. Fusaichi Pegasus...another short career. Fizzled in Breeders Cup Classic. Funny Cide...easy to root for. Most Geldings are. They just keep racing them. Thanks for reading. Thanks for being horse racing fans. They don't whine, they don't use their "sports" status to get on a political pedestal.

My personal favorites are the Bid, Slew, Affirmed, Secretariat and for ones as of lately it would have to be Arrogate, Pharaoh, Curlin, GhostZapper, and Invasor !!! This year there is one horse in specific that I seriously hope I can add to my list of all time greats, Essential Quality!!!

He raced only 7 times (6 for real) up until early May of the 3yo season. Nothing against him; I was so devastated when the incident happened and never saw the Preakness as it was all about Barbaro. So sad when all their efforts finally failed the next year. But Barbaro did not have much of a career to say he needs to be in top 50. In fact, Spectacular Bid is faster at 5f, 6f, 7f, the mile, 1 1/16, 1 1/8, 1 3/8...Swaps had 5 world records when he retired..Secretariat best none of them. Dr Fager was much faster as well at most distances...with tremendous weight on his back..all the horses I mentioned achieved their greatness with as much as 14 more lbs on their back.. look I get It..we all have our favorites. @@davemattia ok first off, I don't hate any animals. Especially horses. I have devoted much of my life to sport. Especially the history of the game. I literally have a tire room devoted to memorabilia including all 3 triple crown saddle cloths from Whirlaway. And an extensive library to boot. And you are flat out wrong in your assertion that Secretariat holds numerous records. He holds 1.maybe you were referring to restricted racing records??? But those are not recorded. Or maybe even track records. And I do believe he holds/held 3 of those. Look I could go on for hours. I will ad one tidbit to his Belmont run. The NYRA spent 10 hours hard rolling that Belmont surface prior to Belmont day. The undercard yielded some smoking times as well. A Maiden race coughed up a 107 4/5 for six furlongs. And a grade 2 stakes race a 141 2/5 for a mile and 1/16th. Every race was faster than hell. Glib is an understatement. Then you have the big question, why was he full out with a 20 length lead against to what amounted to a pack of claiming horses???? The sport wanted exactly what it got. An eye popping fast race. It was good for a struggling sport. But then lost 2 of his next 3 in open company...And even with all that. His fractions in that race are dwarfed by Spectacular Bids fractions in his world record run....again I don't hate Secretariat. It does offend me some when I see people today who know nothing, spew such nonsense of nobody better. Because it is not true..and he never went through the test of Champions...weight!! He was certainly a great horse. Just not in the same league as several others.....I meant no offense. And I will check you out on Google. I will recommend a good book as well. "The last super horse of the 20th century" by legendary author, Peter Lee. Peace..and have a good day...and if you want to see an amazing race. Round Table was a turf horse. Some say he was the greatest turf horse. He also won 43 races in four years. I am not sure that any other horse in history possessed the combination of talent, durability, and resilience required to win so many races in such a short time frame. Round Table was almost indestructible. He also set 16 track, US, and world records and scored 17 wins while carrying between 130 and 136 pounds.

      Alphabetical order. 24:00 And i maintain if you ran each of these champions at 1.5 miles, each running their best race of their lives, that Secretariat's Belmont would best them all, either looking at flat times, or comparing Beyer Speed Figures. Andy Beyer went back and computed the fig for Big Red's 1973 Belmont, and came out with a 149. No other horse has come close.

      @@garylobo348 Why the Mile and a half. The Champions distance is a Mile and a quarter. A lot of these horses never even ran the Mile and a half. But put it this way, when Spectacular Bid set the still standing world record at the Classic distance in 1:57.69. he was eased up the last 1/16th of a mile. It could have been much faster. So if he just jogged another 1/4 mile in 26 flat. He beats Secretariat at that distance as well by 3 lengths. He also did his record with a 130 lbs on his back. So if that scenario took place. There would not be a single distance where Secretariat was within 3 lengths of the Bid. They don't call the Bid "the greatest horse to ever look through a bridle" for nothing. It is because he was. Two amazing, Rachel Alexandria & Zenyatta. If only she hadn't broken her leg in that match race. Ruffian would be in my top 50. But the owners of Ruffian should *never* have put her into that match race IMO. Ruffian's style was to go to the lead and never give up the lead. It almost inspired her to race faster when other horses were closing around. The equine also said that she was panting too hard and really dehydrated. :(

    • @marysueeasteregg
      @marysueeasteregg 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The really questionable thing about Ruffian entering that match race was entering her (a 3-yr-old filly!) in an especially demanding 10-furlong race only 2 weeks after having run a 12-furlong race, the Coaching Club American Oaks. Foolish Pleasure, in contrast, was coming off a 4-week rest following the Belmont. These days, even that 4-week layoff would be minimal; even by the standards of the 70's, that 2-week rest is difficult to fathom under the circumstances. Plus the match was only Ruffian's 3rd race at over a mile. It was Foolish Pleasure's 7th race at more than a mile. I think she was the better horse, but he was the better seasoned.
      Her running style was perfectly suited for a match race, though. Match races are typically won by the pacesetter, and never by a horse coming from really far back. The accepted wisdom in such races is to go for the lead and try to keep it, exactly what Ruffian did naturally, anyway. A jockey doesn't rate a horse during a match race. For the match race against War Admiral, Tom Smith trained Seabiscuit to gun it out of the gate. Leroy Jolley did the same for Foolish Pleasure for the 1975 match race. Jolley knew that to beat Ruffian, she had to be challenged for the lead.

    The word "American" in phrases like "Greatest American Horses" can be used in a sense of nationality or geography. So it's not usually offensive when people include Canadians in lists of "Greatest Americans" like we see in this video. The creator of this video may not have known about this, or may have simply meant "races conducted in America regardless of which country the horse came from." I'm not easily offended, but most Canadians are easily offended when it comes to American misunderstandings of Canada. By the way, horsetrack racing is really big in Canada. There are 18 racetracks in Ontario alone, which is double the number of racetracks as any state in the USA. However there is more of an emphasis on standardbred than thoroughbred horses probably because thoroughbred aren't hardy enough for tough weather and work conditions.

      Although time is usually the standard of which great racehorses are measured it is meaningless if you don't win which was the case with Sham.If you take away the 1977 Swaps Stakes a race in which Slew should have never been entered he lost two races both by a nose and destroyed Affirmed in their two meetings and Affirmed was a better horse than Sham. Secretariat 's Belmont race was only possible because the pace of the first half was not fast but if you look at the 1978 Jockey Club Gold Cup the early pace was suicidal and for Slew to find the courage to make another run in the late stretch was incredible. So as you said the time which in Secretariat's case was phenomenal I dare say that if Sham had pushed him to a 45.1 half there would not have been a 2.24 final time. It is impossible to compare the races of the great horses because races set up differently due to competition,distance,track conditions, weight imposts and how fit the horse is at race time. Your point about Onion and Angle Light is well taken they probably would never have beaten Slew. Arguing about who is best is fun but its usually a matter of personal preference and there can be host of supporting stars but it's not a winnable argument

      Which is why i am saying what i am saying.

      *Easy Goer had Top 5 All time Talent* Top 5 talent? He sure didn't have the kind of talent that a horse like Round Table, ranked #17 in the Bloodhorse top 100, had. Round Table won 3 times as many races, 43, than the 14 races Easy Goer won. By the time Easy Goer retired at age 4, Round Table had already won 34 races. Round Table won on dirt, turf, east, west and all over the place. He won more races carrying between 130-136 pounds, 17, than Easy Goer won in a career that only consisted of carrying lesser weights. RT set 16 track, US, and World records. He did all of this running a meat grinder of a racing schedule that might have destroyed a horse like Easy Goer. To put it simply, Easy Goer's simply lacked the ability to win large numbers of major races that Round Table possessed. Sure RT had his off days, but he was the closest thing to an indestructible winning machine that I can think of.
