I tried your modification and indeed it worked, but after a month or so, I got the same connection problems as before. What worked for me until today is to program the sonoff basic with de tasmota-light version (not het minimal-version!). It seems all the extra stuff that is in the standard-tasmota version, makes the ESP8266 draw more power while attempting to connect via WiFi. With the aging power-supply not up to this task, the connection problems start showing. Using the trimmed down tasmota-light version, I have no more connection-issues with the older sonoff basic units. Hopes this helps anyone struggling with this issue.

Greetings vccground - Great Content!!! Can I power the Sonoff Basic R2 with 12V DC battery as is or would I have to remove that capacitor and connect at those terminals as shown in your video or other method? Also would the draw on the 12v battery be low?
    Thanks ...🙂
