    Ben, this is a superb video! Answers all the questions we have. The noise difference with the rack on is almost imperceptible. Roughly 20% range hit with the bikes on the roof. Surprising. Thanks!

    This just summarised absolutely everything I needed to know about getting my bikes onto my M3. Thanks so much for all the effort and info!!

    Amazing video Ben. Thanks a lot for taking the time to do this video. Very thorough and clear.

    Excellent video, thanks for the deep dive. I was thinking about using the tow bar/ball style carrier, but second guess this after the centre of gravity concern you pointed out.

    This is superb. Thanks so much. My bikes only 8kg maybe less with the upgrades, So looks like rear mount may be viable for me. That image of the single roab bike on the roof does look epic

    Your stats for Wh/mile maybe need correcting for the differences in average speed - but a general “by feel rather than by mathematics” correction certainly bears out the result that you were expecting to demonstrate. Good job! Funny how the “with bikes” doesn’t sound (to me) significantly noisier in the cabin, though it evidently introduces a lot of additional turbulence.

    • @BenVallack
      @BenVallack  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Exactly, I showed the average speed so people could draw a reasonable conclusion. It’s so hard to get perfect comparative data but with enough information hopefully people can get an idea. Yeah the noise is certainly all very much in the high frequencies. In terms of loudness it doesn’t really come close to the rumble from the tyres! I guess with the bikes a lot of the noise is actually generated quite far away from the cabin. The impact is there in the range but not too bad in terms of hearing it. Thanks for your comment!

    Do you happen to have a picture of the two kids bikes on the roof rack? I’m trying to do the same with my kids bikes. Idk the specs of each bike, I just know they suit my son who is 9 and my daughter who is 6.

    • @BenVallack
      @BenVallack  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The small one might just need the wheel holder on the bike rack moving to the other side of the base (this will become clear when you look at it). Other than that they can hold small bikes fine.

    Was searching if I could carry three bikes (already got one Thule 598) on the roof rack. Thank you for the great video! Think you can slide the T bolts in the rail without using the rubber strip right?

    Have you guys ever thought of a boot mounted bike carrier instead of a tow bar or roof rack ?
    Or have you considered doing combination if toe and roof rack ?
    Less items on roof should help with better range

    • @BenVallack
      @BenVallack  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah but then it’s a hassle to use the boot.

    • @Peakabike

      Do these boot mounted carriers exist for Teslas though ?

  • @manvirtiwana1997

    Really grateful for your video, it’s answered many of my concerns. Was the a reason you put on the T bolts first down to resistance only? I usually slide them on whilst still attached to the bike carrier with my current system. Also I’ve heard some people cut the rubber strip in to sections, is that on the Yakima instructions or they supposed to be pushed on top of the rubber? My Thule wing bars have a handy slit for the bolts to slide through.

    • @BenVallack
      @BenVallack  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’m pretty sure the rubber on this one is designed to be left in tact. I have seen the ones that you cut and it was a kind of I section that couldn’t be depressed. This one is kind of springy and clearly depresses out the way. However it does provide quite a lot of resistance which is why I do it one by one.

      @@BenVallack I have a similar set up with my current old prorack whispbars - I found that you can spray the top of the rubber with WD40 just before sliding on the bike racks with T bolts. This means you can leave the bolts assembled onto the bike racks and have cleaner roof bars when not carrying bikes.

    Why is your average speed different for all tests ??
    Did you compare them as like for like i,e all at 70mph ??
    Because if not then its 100% incomparable data that you have collected.
    Also the fact your avg spd is different is not a good comparison for the consumption either.

    Do the bars latch onto the roof glass?

    • @BenVallack
      @BenVallack  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nope, doesn’t touch the glass, there are metal anchors below the glass.

    My question might be a bit daft: The roof rack looks curved. Do the Thule bike carriers make the bike lean outwards due to this curve? I have only used them on flat bars...
    Cheers...

    • @BenVallack
      @BenVallack  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, it’s quite noticeable! Don’t think it’s an issue though.

    • @alpinekiwi
      @alpinekiwi ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BenVallack it does seem a little odd, but I guess if the angle isn't too severe it shouldn't load the swingarm of the carrier too much.
      Cheers.

    Hi ben great video, so is it 55kg limited for the bike rack on the toe bar? or are you on 20 inch wheels with the 20kg limit? just thinking my bike plus wife's plus sons would be about 35kg plus the rack so maybe 45-50kg total, but don't' know about the centre of gravity thing. might have to have a look at the roof bar option instead but for camping i was thinking, roof box on top and bikes on the back but maybe it can be done the other way around? any updates on how it's going with the roof rack option? cheers Paul

    • @BenVallack
      @BenVallack  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      18” wheels so 55kg limit but alongside the center of gravity limit which is easy to hit way before getting to 55kg.

    • @BenVallack
      @BenVallack  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I love the roof bars actually but camping with bikes is always going to be a bit of an issue. I think a little trailer would work well there. We will probably go down that route.
