Hey I hope I'm not spoiling anything but jack used to work for the Dutch east India company and he was smuggling cargo and he found out it was humans he was delivering to Davy Jones, essentially human trafficking, these souls paid off Davy Jones so the Dutch east indies company could go around unmolested from the kraken and the flying Dutchman, and historically its true the Dutch east indies company was involved with human trafficking

The idea behind Captain Jack Sparrow, according to Depp was basically meant to produce a live-action cartoon character who could get away with the physical and social boundaries most people couldn't get away with. Depp was always an admirer of the looney tune character Pepe Le Pew and based half the character on that, and then the other 50% (which also included the inspiration for the look of Captain Jack) came from Keith Richard's of The Rolling Stones. Depp (being also a musician) has had a great friendship with Keith Richards throughout most of his career and was inspired by that flamboyant and rockstar personality to craft the loveable drunk that became Captain Jack

Director Gore Verbinski has a background in VFX which gives him a real perfectionist attitude about it. Fun fact: when the kraken smashed the ship in two that was actually practical. They built two massive cement tentacles and dropped them onto a life size pirate ship.

One of the fascinating things about Davy Jones is, once you have some familiarity with Bill Nighy as an actor, it's clear how much he's bringing to the role. He's an actor with *such* a distinct way of moving... those little head tilts are very recognizable Nighy mannerisms. The effects are groundbreaking and add layers to the character, but the core of him is pure Bill Nighy tearing up scenes.

His dictation is really unique, too. I'd recognize his inflections anywhere. The way he says words is special, and i always pick up on it. I noticed he really leaned exaggeratedly on his approach to certain consonants and word endings as Davy Jones. First time i ever saw him was as Victor in Underworld.

    3 fun facts:
    1. Both the base texture and base color diffusion of Davy Jones' skin came from an old coffee cup in the trash with some leftover remains turned science experiment.
    2. The fall and subsequent "Jar of Dirt" song was not in the script, JD really fell and just went with it, making up the song on the spot - which is why everyone in the background he passes has the "wtf?" face on. xD
    3. The Cliffhanger ending of Barbossa walking down the steps was also not in the script, none of the original cast from the first movie knew that Geoffrey Rush was joining them in the third movie or that he would make a cameo at the end of the second, so the shocked reaction you see form on the groups faces is genuine - it was a surprise cameo for cast and audience alike! xD

In my opinion this decade was a golden age of filmmaking for stuff like this. The VFX were advanced but most movies still blended the CGI with lots of practical effects and sets. I really think that this trilogy is deserving of the "epic" status. It really feels like a modern epic. And its similar to some of the structure of the lord of the rings, another modern epic; first movie is about the characters (like you said), second movie expands the world (also like you said), and the third is the final battle and resolution. I don't know, some similarities. Great reaction, James!
edit: Also Bill Nighy's performance as Jones is killer!

"I wonder what Jack Sparrow was based off of"
As a pirate, Jack "Sparrow" Ward, but as a performance, Keith Richards. Apparently that was all depp's idea - during Curse of the Black Pearl he had been doing research, and found out that there were a lot of parallels between pirates and rock stars - so he went for a rock-star performance.

  • @Darnaguen

This is my absolute favourite PotC. There's so much subtlety, symbolism, cleverness and layers while it's still entertaining, campy and fun.
Take Jack's whole arc, for example: throughout the film he's kind of a little lost, he's in deep trouble and for once doesn't quite know a way out of it. And his trusty compass is no help because every time it points towards the solution, the next minute it swings to a completely different direction, towards something he apparently wants just as much as his freedom and survival. Hmm. And this state of 'vexedness' (as the writers called it) is symbolized by the loss of his hat very early on in the film -- the hat he only gets back at the very end once he essentially wins his little game with Elizabeth and accepts his fate.
And as you pointed out, it still looks absolutely fantastic. In fact this film and Dariusz Wolski, the DP, are what inspired me to study cinematography. The man is criminally underrated for these films, IMO.
(Also, "I'm not sorry" "Pirate" = iconic as hell, up there with "I love you" "I know" in my humble opinion.)

  • @nedzed3663
    @nedzed3663 2 ปีที่แล้ว +53

I loved how this movie and the one after it, every main character wanted the same thing for different reasons and those were consistent, Davey Jones's heart, clear goal. Davey Jones has to be up there as one of the greatest Disney antagonists, also the actor who played him was Bill Nighy, and his performance shines through the CG, his facial expressions etc, still holds up all these years later. I think it's the same reason why the Indiana Jones movies (the first 3) still look fantastic, there's this grittiness to it that can only be created with practical effects working with CG-I, like the first Jurassic Park. And the composer was the great Hans Zimmer, probably one of his best scores

  • @mycroft16
    @mycroft16 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

My favorite effect in this whole film is the ability to sell the presence and size of the kraken when it attacks that ship. The tentacles falling down and crushing the ship and then just splitting it in half feels so visceral and real. They put a lot of effort into every frame of CGI in this and it shows. Because you never really question it, even when you KNOW it's fake. That's a real talent with CGI... getting an audience to willingly suspend disbelief without thinking about it.

Here’s why this looks better than many movies today. The director, Verbinski, has a VFX background, meaning, he knows exactly how to set things up on camera for what comes next, and knows what to ask for to the VFX supervisors. He also knows the limitations, and tries to make the most out of what he has.
Many directors consider VFX artists to be magicians who can basically make anything happen by pressing a button or two, so they disregard the set up they need to do. Even worse, sometimes egos prevail, and when the supervisor instructs the director to do something with the scene that will benefit them in the long run, if it clashes with what the director had in mind, it’s not going to be heard.

One of my favourite films of all time.
My favourite, and at this point I think lesser known (because it was only on the DVD bts menu) bts fact/technique is that for filming the Kraken attack on the merchant's vessel Will was on. The final blow to the ship, when the Kraken raises two of its arms straight into the air, they had had a massive model, if not lot full-sized ship that they put two giant blue pipes next to, and then pushed them over onto the ship crushing it the way you see in the film. Add in the tentacles with CGI, the crew members on I assume a green screen, and you get a fantastic combination of techniques to make a fantastic moment in the film.

Great lines from the first film about the compass which foreshadowed its use:
"A compass that doesn't point North..." ~ Norrington
"Well, we're not trying to FIND North are we?" ~ Mister Gibbs
Anyways, what I loved about this film was that it didn't gloss over storyline development from the first movie. Norrington shows up again: he's lost his honor and his commission for giving a bunch of pirates a head start. And he's a drunk, cynical pirate now who doesn't give an -ish! I really dug that. And I really dug the less posh and more dirty version of Norrington. He almost fit in that pirate crew in a way.
Also the actor for Davy Jones? --> Bill Nighy. My man had a niche in those years for getting villain parts (Viktor from Underworld being an honorable mention there). It's his weird off-key off-beat delivery. The mannnerisms mixed through his speech. He just doesn't talk like other people. And that makes him so weird and so interesting. Especially combined with the octopus face. I think Davy Jones is in my Top 5 of movie villains. He's one of the reasons why Dead Man's Chest and At World's End are two of my favorite Pirate's films. Jones just added a whole new world of lore to the Pirate world.
I also like that Will's purpose in these movies isn't "being in love" anymore. He gets, as you so aptly put it, a sidequest and he becomes really determined. And it rubs off on you. You start to become engaged with him more as a character.
Then there's also the tone. I love how the movie starts. Dark tones. A ruined wedding. A dickhead on a porch.
"This is the warrant is for Elizabeth Swann." ~ Govern Swann
"Is it? Oh, my mistake. Seize her!" ~ Cutler-Beckett
    It all sets the mood.
But I'll stop raving here man! ;) great reaction! Thanks again! On to "At World's End" :D

It's insane to think that Davy Jones and his crew was 2006
    2006!
And it not only holds up but is still more groundbreaking than some of the stuff we see regularly in big action flicks today
The lighting on their bodies, the way their fish parts move semi-independently but can still be controlled, the way their fish parts interact with other objects or the environment (his tentacle blowing out the pipe flame, his tentacle beard whipping around when he turns his head, his crab claw grabbing bill's throat and actually moving like it's there)

The Davy Jones character played by Bill Nighy was the pinnacle of CGI back in 2006. Yet even today it still is one of the best CGI characters EVER created.15+yrs later you cannot tell it was made in 2006. Absolutely incredible job done by Industrial Light and Magic.

Davy Jones is fantastic! He's played by Bill Nighy (of the Underworld franchise). The score is also incredible. In the third film, there is a love theme that is one of my favorite pieces of film music ever. The third also has the darkest (but iconic) opening of the series in my opinion.

This one is easily my favorite of the series with the lore they open up and the way they portray Davy Jones and his crew is so cool with the water fauna theme seeing as how the Flying Dutchman is almost always underwater. Always liked Bill Nighy ever since i first saw him in Underworld, such a unique actor with how he plays these characters with distinctive mannerisms almost like tics, so cool to see you react to these films.

Dude...Davey Jones is one of my favorite characters in a fantasy styled film ever! I was amazed with Smeagol in The Lord of the Rings, but Davey Jones kicked it up to 11 for sure. I love Bil Nighy portrayed him. Excellent choice. I just watched this again the other night with the wife. I love these first 3 films. The rest can go to hell lol I absolutely loved Davey Jones' story line. It's tragic and makes him more than just a "movie monster" in my opinion. It goes into it even more in the 3rd film. Can't wait for you to see it!

(Part 1) For anybody who is always praising the first movie to be the best. I have been studying 1-3 and I constantly re-watch them. Pirates of the Caribbean does not go downhill in writing after the first movie. That is your business to believe that opinion everyone else goes with.
Dead man’s chest gave the characters more depth! Elizabeth and William barely have anything to work with in the first movie. William’s relationship with his father that was hinted in the first movie of his father‘s existence. Paid off wonderfully. William’s character had way more in depth now and you have something to truly care about him for. You get both perspectives when you understand their Reunion! Bootstrap didn’t want Will to become a pirate like him, he wanted him to have a free life from the pirate life. William had a hard time accepting he was half Pirate but when he accepted his life and his father… He has a new journey to stab the heart of Davy Jones to set his father free.
And you’re implying William is better in the first movie just because he wanted to save the girl he loved? William in the second movie now has Elizabeth as a lover. And now a new journey to rescue his father someone else he cares about. And this became a difficult situation when bootstrap told Elizabeth at world‘s end. William has to make a decision. Either don’t kill Davy Jones so he can be with you. Or he does kill Davy Jones and set me free, but he won’t be able to be on land for 10 years. If I were him I wouldn’t pick me! 😕 The emotional weight on William’s character gets better and better.
Elizabeth in the first movie was just a damsel in distress girl. She wasn’t useless in the first movie but you get the point. In the second movie, Elizabeth learned to wield a sword and she used it in the battle. She pulled a gun to Beckett‘s head.. went on her own journey to save will.
She has grown a lot since the first movie who was just an innocent girl! Elizabeth got better as a character in 2 and 3!
As for Jack sparrow. He does not become a joke at all in all 3 movies.
Jack sparrow is at his best in the second movie and in the third movie. There was a moment in dead men’s chest… Where Jack didn’t know what he truly wanted so the compass couldn’t locate what he desired. So when Elizabeth went on her journey and then found Jack.. Jack used her for his advantage! He took advantage of Elizabeth’s feelings by telling her if you want to save Will you have to want to find the chest of Davy Jones! In order to get will back.. That’s why Jack gave her the compass. Jack knew if he couldn’t figure what he wanted out he was going to get it out of Elizabeth. Since Elizabeth now wants to find the chest of Davy Jones to save will. This gives Jack the huge opportunity to find the chest to stab the heart in it. But instead he wants to control DavyJones before killing him. Jack sparrow is not stupid! When will was trying to stab the heart towards the end of the second movie. Jack knows just because Davy Jones is dead, does not mean the Kraken will be stopped as well. And you’re telling me Jack is dumb after part 1??
As for Beckett. He was a well executed villain who uses dialogue and negotiation to control people. The Reason why Beckett didn’t fire his cannons at worlds end. Was because it would be totally out of his character to use weapons. Beckett uses certain words to get through people and how to control them behind the scenes. Beckett at the end of the movie had nothing left to negotiate with. Davy Jones was dead, Jack sparrow is alive and well. Will Turner is now the new captain of the Flying Dutchman. Beckett had literally nothing to use against on people. He was caught in shocked and he decided to die..
Anyways I could defend the Gore Verbinski’s Trilogy all night. His trilogy is an underrated trilogy. It had great character writing and amazing detail of its depth.
Also Will vs Davy Jones!!! 😈😈😈
    when Will challenging Davy Jones.
Davy Jones asks him how do you know about the key?
Will replies and says, that's NOT part of the game is it? 😏 You can STILL walk away!! 😏
As for pirates 4/5 they are not even Canon they are filler movies. The story ended at worlds end! ☠️
(Part 2) Dead man’s chest has a very simple plot.. Jack sparrow is the master at controlling peoples hearts to get what he wants and out of a situation. He screwed over Will so Jack can save himself… But it worked in his favor for his reunion to meet his father.. William even told Jack you screwed me over but because of you I was reunited with my father after such a long time.. Elizabeth was caught in Jack’s illusion of trusting him to get Will back that had nothing to do with him which was a lie. Will being on Davy Jones ship had everything to do with Jack lol. Jack left on good terms with Elizabeth and William in the first movie. Elizabeth had every right to believe Jack…. It was Jack who took advantage of her feelings to find the chest by telling her if you want to find will you need to find the chest of Davy Jones! But it was an illusion so Jack can get closer to find the chest of Davy Jones to control him. But to also go back and save will after Jack got what he wanted.
If people don’t understand these movies that’s their problem. But I understand every movie! That’s why I rank 2>3>1 ☠️☠️☠️
(Part 3) I’m sorry to break it to you but the curse of the Black Pearl is my least favorite in the trilogy. I rewatch the trilogy every few months. And to me I just don’t find it as deep or as interesting compared to dead man’s chest or at worlds end.
Curse of the Black Pearl is still a well written amazing film. It’s just I’d rather choose having William struggle on trying to save his father from Davy Jones along side using very clever strategy and dialogue during the dice liar game on Davy Jones to get key from him.. VS William in the first movie who just wants to save Elizabeth….
I love darker storytelling and when steaks are becoming higher! Dead man’s chest gave me everything.. Elizabeth was a useful damsel in stress female lead in the first movie. But I would rather choose her character development in the second movie compared to her in the first movie.
Elizabeth pulled a gun on Beckett’s face. She went on her own journey to save William. Who also taught her how to defend herself with swords. And that paid off well at the end of the movie! Her development is miles better in (Dead mens chest) compared to herself in the first movie who just takes the fall for William to protect him from Barbosa.
Jack sparrow’s dialog and clever intelligence grew (MORE) in (dead men’s chest) and (at worlds end) and you cannot convince me otherwise. If people think he became a joke after the first movie that sounds like a (YOU PROBLEM) Jack sparrow is pretty intelligent in the second movie on being a master at manipulation and taking advantage of people around him to get himself out of a situation in order to save his life and possibly everyone else’s. He just knows how to play the game like that….. You can’t trust Jack sparrow on making the right decisions because he’s supposed to be ahead of the game on everyone’s perspective on him. If Jack was easy to follow with answers he wouldn’t be Jack sparrow lol.
Not to mention what’s with this opinion on people saying Jack sparrow was someone you should not mess with?? Jack sparrow literally wants you to mess with him so he can use that to his advantage to pull you in under his string, for you to doubt him in order to rise up above everyone else. You were caught in his illusion the entire time so he can be superior at the end of the situation and screw you over. If Jack sparrow was someone to NOT mess with, just like Davy Jones.. Then you wouldn’t be caught in Jack sparrow’s illusion on being the worst pirate in the world..
No seriously if Jack had the same fear approach as Davy Jones…. Then all you would have to do were to look at Jack sparrow for a few seconds and be so scared of him, Everyone would just run away.. literally what’s the fun in that for Jack Sparrow?! If he was someone to not mess like people claim. Then (WHY) do people keep on assisting 100% on messing with Jack Sparrow?? Please answer that man lol. That literally makes no sense…
You have to mess with Jack sparrow to be caught in his illusion of doubtfulness so he can be the superior person in the situation and also getting out of a dangerous situation. He literally pulls you in as a fool because people were messing with them. Like come on?! 😂

This trilogy is really up there with some of the greatest films of the century. I'm bummed that it floundered a bit in the 4th and 5th and especially how it leaned far too heavily into the jokes, especially with jack. You were 100% right that these movies perfectly balance humor with the serious moments and know when to dial it back or even get dramatic or scary

I think I've said it before on another video, but bruh I LIVE for how stoked you get over the intricacies of the performances and execution, because SAME. if you weren't already given the heads up, Jack Sparrow (insofar as Johnny played him) was partially inspired by Keith Richards of The Rollin Stobes.
Also, Tia Dalma (Naomi Harris) actually had her mother as her vocal coach for tia's west indian-isms in her dialogue in Pirates 2 & 3. Naomi's mother is Jamaican, and Tia Dalma's canon language is Jamaican Patois, so to ensure that Tia sounded authentic, she elected to have her mother coach her. Which I think is hella cute and also just?? Kinda bomb
Anyway, keep up the content! 💃🏼

I don't know if anyone has mentioned it but the thing they turned to call the kraken is usually the device they use to pull up or lower the anchor. The flying dutchman doesn't use or need an anchor so it was a cool touch to replace that function and gives a tiny hint that the flying dutchman was originally a normal ship. I don't believe it's ever mentioned as a normal ship other than just our own speculation and clues from characters.
