    This video further reinforces that getting stuck in the gear-trap is bad. People feel like they can't start a band, can't record, etc because they don't have the right gear. Then they get stuck in the trap of feeling that they need to buy more and more and more gear. Some of the best albums were made by people just using what they had.
    The ultra-metal pedal sounded great right off the bat. The metal master sounded way better than expected, too.

    I've been experimenting a lot with EQ pedals the last few years, since I can only afford to use solid-state equipment to rely on mid to high gain tones, so I've learned a lot on how to emulate valve sounds on them. Also I think people overlook how a good preamp circuit can improve your tone regardless if you're using a valve or solid-state power amp. Thanks for shining that light on the topic!

    The EQ into the MM pedal totally made it sound like a VERY 90s death metal sound. I love that sound soooooo much, but understand if it's too fizzy for some people (namely modern Djent-type guys edit - and gals).
    I think the biggest surprise was hearing the mini-ts9 into the rat. That was a neat sound. Never played with a rat, but I've heard a lot of speak about them as kind of an unsung hero.
    The MXR EQ you do is actually something I do to dial in my tone when I'm just using a tube amp. I'll throw that into my FX loop (which sucks, because it IS noisy) and cut some honk out of my 6505+, and some of the fizz as well, then just boost the front of the amp, dial in a good tone, and go a little surgical with the pedal before it hits the power amp. GORGEOUS work sometimes. I guess that's kind of what you're doing with the ultra metal pedal there - UM becomes the preamp, the EQ hits before the power amp, and you're gtg. Very similar to what the Mesa Mark amps do with the 5-band EQ between the preamp and power amp. I'd honestly love a mesa amp like that, but I'm broke as hell right now.
    As always dude, I love your videos! Thanks for doing what you do!

    The Rat into a dual rec makes for an interesting sound in my experience. Usually you just gotta use tight pickups and dial back the bass. Or use an EQ.
    Also the Metal Master pulls off the 90s Death Metal sound idea ran into a Marshall style amp (or a Bugera in my case). Not the best sound but if you’re jamming out old school shit it’s fun as hell.

    • @yowild9629

      Justin G. It depends what you do with ears not eyes . I had used Rat in “ starve mode “
      the idea is to go over the desired Gain on amp and starve it with less volume from rat but sligth more gain than boosted.
      For me it gives that Gritieness growliness = slower power distortion assolation , near Fuzz teritory with less noise ( suprisingly )
      No noisgate needed!

    Best high gain tone for metal is 2 SD1 BOSS OVERDRIVES going into the dirty channel of your amp. 3 GAIN stages is all you need to get into sonic metal territory. You'll have more tone shaping ability having 2 extra volumes, 2 more tone knobs and 2 more gain controls which are usually just set to zero or off position but if you want it to be more cluttered/dirty it's always there waiting. The additional volume backing off will clean up the gain also giving it a sit in the mix or behind it kind of sound which is very doomy to say the least.

  • @yowild9629
    @yowild9629 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I use rat in starve mode . less volume from unity but sligtly more gain than boosted on amp that is tuned with more gain than desired.
    For me it gives more Grit & growl in slower distortion assolation . & suprisingy much less noise so no naise gates needed.

    Brilliant video. I used to have a beastly Engl Powerball half stack but stupidly sold it all. I am now building a much more convenient pedalboard rig. I am using an AMT E-1 preamp \ distortion pedal and will be running it into a Two Notes Cab M for the power amp \ speaker sim. Do you still think it would be worth using EQ in front of the pedal? I do have a boss SD-1 lying around but not so sure the E-1 would need that.

    • @PlagueScytheStudios
      @PlagueScytheStudios  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've always found the SD-1 and screamer derivatives to sound too focused in front of most ENGLs, so I would definitely go for an EQ or clean boost type pedal if you're unhappy with the boss. You probably won't need much in terms of an overall gain boost anyway.

    You have to make use of the tone/filter knob when you use a RAT instead of just cranking it either way. The RAT is not a Tube Screamer with more gain. The Tube Screamer + RAT combo is essentially what the Fulltone OCD circuit is, which is why Michael Fuller was unable to patent it.

    A lot of these can sound great if you turn the gain down on your distortion pedal, and put them in the FX loop proper, aka plug in to the front of the amp, with the "Metal Zone" or whatever in the loop. Set your amp on edge of breakup or "thick clean" and then set your distortion pedal to accentuate that, or mold it to your preferred distortion tone. You can still throw a tube screamer in front of your amp, and this method works with solid state or tube amps, as well as cheaper amp modeller pedals like the units from Vox, Zoom, Mooer, Nu>X, etc., in that sub-$150 market, as well as "in the box" with cheaper, simpler modellers. I have the same Behringer UM300, as well as a TO800, and a Zoom G1XOn, and in tandem with an ART Tube MP/C, I can use a Peavey Badit 112, or I can plug into my ART SLA-1 rack power and drive a 4x12 directly. Since I generally put the Tube MP/C as the last item in the FX loop, I can actually run both setups at once by adding a single XLR cable, but if I'm only using the half-stack, I can enable a solid state clean channel on my Zoom pedal to replace the Peavey's preamp circuit. This allows me to get a very wide variety of recognizable, yet very unique tones, due to me fudging everything with layered and cascaded effects. I can sound like System of a Down on one patch, Death on another, and then I can still use the expression pedal to put the gain all the way down, and engage my UM300 for an entirely unique tone on nearly every patch, as the amp model on each patch will mesh differently with the UM300 due to varying gain structures and EQ settings. Everything tucks into the back of the Peavey, rather conveniently, so I only use 3 pedals, have no need for a pedal board, and generally treat the 4x12 like an extension cab for larger venues, or use it to mic up when recording. Like, I have a bunch of cheap, shitty gear, lol, but listening to my recordings, you'd never know it.

      I throw a clean booster in front and it tightened up the low end and since the I find the high on the Metalcore pedal can be kinda sensitive, I use the treble from the boost to give it a little more high end.
      The boost really pushed the pedal into a very tight setting.

    I've got a question that might be kinda green: 13:10 I think I have this problem
    Mic-ing a marshall cab and amp, straight into an interface into my computer. I seem to be able in a pretty alright tone to my ears, but when I play it back it has horrendous high frequency fuzz. Not white noise, it comes along with the sound produced from the guitar. Now, I've tried different microphones, a Shure knock off seems to cut alot of that. And of course I can EQ post recording, and alter my tone to adjust. I'm wondering if this is just how it goes or it sounds like I'm doing something incorrectly that I pick up that fizz on my tone no matter what. Similar to 10:27 should I try a wider band EQ Before recording instead of after?

    • @DominiqueHeine
      @DominiqueHeine 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      might be your speaker, or mic placement maybe? did you try moving the mic farther from the center of the speaker and have you tried using it off-axis? really difficult to tell without hearing it. have you tried the fredman technique for micing? that can be used quite effectively to shape your tone without doing a lot of post-processing

    • @kingnothing2161
      @kingnothing2161 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DominiqueHeine It is hard to diagnose without being there, but thanks for replying anyways. I have tried different positions, not sure what that technique is you mentioned. Right now its dead center otherwise I lose too much of that punch and it sounds too flat. I did try each speaker and discovered that they aren't exactly great. I knew that when I bought it (its an MG cabinet 😳). Its on the speaker that sounds the best.
      Edit: watchee a couple videos, and that may work for me. However, I'm likely going to be recording both angles separately rather that buying another microphone and stand or a clip for it.

    • @DominiqueHeine
      @DominiqueHeine 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@kingnothing2161 yeah, the MG cabs aren't great. maybe try and get a cheap (used) 1x12 or 2x12 with a V30 for example.
      For the fredman technique, you use one mic on-axis (90° angle) and one (preferably the same model but not necessary) pointing in a 40 degree angle towards the cone. With that you have some phase cancellation that will take out some nasty frequencies in the right spots. Just check youtube for fredman technique ;-)

    Unholy shit! Gods of war arise! If you had a solid state amp with a decent gain channel (Randall RH100 G2), but wanted to push it a bit harder and welly up the gain a bit- would you use a distortion pedal on lower output, or something like an OD pedal or a screamer? Maybe even something along the lines of a Horizon Devices precision drive? Most of the Internets pedal reviews are done on the top tier tube amps- so it's hard to get a bead on what a cheaper Solid State will sound like with these pedals.

    I think the videos could do with a bit of evening out of commentary and demoing, the volume bar has to move like 50% of the full length to compensate when listening in the evening. The after EQ was definitely impactful thing. Found out a similar trick works nicely in mastering, when you might want to record guitars with a lot of mids, but the end product sounds nicer when you scoop the full product a bit.

    Getting some great sounds with the Rat. Be nice to hear it mixed with a bass.
