  • I recently got my hands on a rotary tool, so I decided to try some glass engraving. It turned out to be easier than I expected and I’m very happy with the results. In this video I go over the materials you need and tips and tricks for getting the best results.
    What you’ll need:
    Rotary tool (like a Dremel)
    Diamond coated bits (at least a ball-shaped one)
    Poster tacks
    Printout of the design
    Tape
    Wet cloth and a bowl of water
    Towel
    Dust mask
    Safety glasses
    If you make one of your own, I'd love to see it! Send me a picture on Instagram :)

    Hey Ellen, good job. One tip if you don't mind. When you put the paper inside the glass, put black cloths inside for 2 reasons. Less vibrations on the glass and that the paper remains flat to the inner surface. Where it comes to neck bottles, attach the paper to the glass and use a pointed bit to trace over the paper.

    your a pretty good artist i can see you have a knack for it . tip i do alot of wood carving with a power rotary carver its like a dremel in every way just bigger . when you did the tree at the end if you got some spray adhesive you could glue the picture on there with spray adhesive then scrap off the left over paper or even just wash it off . and you would not have to free hand anything . i do that sometimes or use carbon paper again i work with wood not glass . i have seen a couple home made set ups using a 2 liter bottle plastic of course with a hole in it as well with water the water comes out the hole and pores onto the glass to keep the dust down you dont want glass dust in your eyes or lungs young lady . and i would use goggles over them safty glasses dust will find any open area it can and get in your eyes . just tips you dont have to use them if you dont want to good luck with your projects dear .

    Nice video, love the T-shirt (Laura is awesome!) But just a small piece of advice: you want to hang the dremel, preferably above table level so that the FlexiShaft doesn't break or cause damage to the Dremel itself.

    • @CraftsWithEllen
      @CraftsWithEllen  6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +Ralph Nabhan Thanks Ralph. I did consider hanging the dremel, mostly to give me more freedom in movement, but couldn't find a good way to do it. Didn't know it also affected the dremel itself. I'll make sure to hang it next time :)

    Your bits would last a lot longer if you lubricate them. You can use either a water drip system (ONLY IF YOU'RE USING A FLEX SHAFT) or glass cutting oil.
    It'll also cut down a lot on glass dust. You should still wear a mask and glasses, but it'll cut down on the amount of glass dust in your workspace.

      glad you like the tip i do Engrave Glass of all sorts of things i have had a few thinks break on me because the vibration of the engraver can Oscillate the glass to a point that it can shatter so for a long time i have used a rolled up Cloth and put it inside the Glass the cloth needs to be a little tight so it covers most of the Glass to stop it falling out and to touch most of the inside the glass if the glass you are working on is flat a peace of felt under it damp down any Oscillation hope that helps i like the work you do BUT it only take 1 glass to Shatter you do a lot of damage to your hand or face

    • @CraftsWithEllen
      @CraftsWithEllen  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Honestly, I don't know. All I know is that you should avoid tempered glass when it comes to engraving. If the anti-glare is a surface treatment it might be fine, or you might damage it. Maybe see if you can get a scrap piece and test it (with proper protection of course in case it shatters)? Good luck with your project!
